Re: Randoms 12/10

  • @ashley14598 I have a degree in early childhood education and I can't understand the gender stereotypes that people put on kids. I will encourage my girl or boy to play with trucks and dolls.

  • @lelkcot plumbing problems are the worst. We had cast iron plumbing in our last house, but there was a clog that couldn’t be snaked because it would crumble our pipes. They ended up needing to dig out under our foundation to replace it. I hope your repairs go smoothly.

  • @lelkcot ug! When we bought our house the septic system was a big concern for us because there are two giant trees that are near where the tank is. I just shared your story with DH and he mentioned something about there being insurance for errors/omissions re: the info you got when you bought the house. Might be worth a consultation to get someone else to pay for that!

  • @ashley14598 i don't have that book, but my son loves the pink color! When he has to pick a cart at albertsons (between black police car, red firetruck and a pink car) he always prefers the pink one

@lelkcot ugh, this sucks. I know it's really pricey to have it installed/serviced. The previous owners of our house had money saved for renovations, but they only did the master bathroom before they learned they needed a new septic tank. So all the money went into that instead. At least we know it will last a while.
  • My random: one of the garage door openers gave up today. DH said it was fully burning, with flames and sparks, and he had to use the fire extinguisher on it! I would have totally freaked out! We're now waiting for Christmas sales, maybe we can get one for cheap. Lots of unplanned costs this year so far :disappointed:
  • @mihaelams1 wow, that's a lot more than just giving up! I wonder if it was installed correctly to begin with, that seems like a pretty catastrophic and dangerous failure. I'm glad he was there to put it out!

  • My random this week- family drama is the worst!!! My stepmom is being really needy and awful and thinks she needs to come over to my house for a visit before Christmas. I am working Christmas, and she always gets mad about that. She works as a house cleaner and if my house isn’t spotless she always has something nasty to say. Well right now cleaning my house is not a priority and I don’t want to deal with her toxic attitude so I told her she can’t come, she can just wait for my baby shower the first weekend of Jan. She’s never known anyone that’s had anything but total normal pregnancies and doesn’t get that I don’t have the energy to deal with one extra thing right now. Rant over, thank you!!

  • @3rdtime_charmed you should tell her she can only come over if she'll clean your house for you. That sounds like a win-win!

  • @meggyme fortunately it wasn’t too major a repair, just getting it pumped, some roots pulled out and a pipe replaced. But the price went up and we were told we really need to take down the 3 trees next to the tank or it will continue to be a problem (we’ve had to take out a ton of trees, so we’re really not happy with the prospect of removing more).
@mamakate1616 I think, because it was a foreclosure we’re probably out of luck - pretty sure the contract stated we were buying as is. But thank you!
@mihaelams1 so frustrating when garage door openers give out! Hopefully you guys find a good deal on a new one!

@lelkcot make sure you check with your home owner's insurance. When we had some plumbing issues (a leak that required some slight water damage remediation under our house) our homeowner's insurance covered the remediation and our home warranty covered the plumbing. We just paid the deductibles. I've been meaning to call them regarding a giant sycamore that is maybe 5 ft from our kitchen window that has already warped part of our concrete driveway.

  • @meggyme thanks, I’ll do that. Hadn’t thought to check with them!
  • @lelkcot we hadn't either until the water remediation company told us that a lot of their work is covered under insurance. Depending on your deductible vs the cost of the repairs it might be worth it. Just make sure to ask for details about the claim possibly increasing your payments.

  • @3rdtime_charmed Yea that’s obnoxious, I’m sorry. I’d probably tell her something like “well I’m sorry that I’m not a special unicorn like everyone else you must know, but you could clean my house for me.”
Right now I am a slacker myself. If I get to picking something up, then I get to it. You do you and just ignore her.

  • @3rdtime_charmed tell her she’s welcome to come over if she’s planning to gift you with house cleaning!
  • I finished pretty much all my Christmas shopping! I still will have to seriously help H with his family, though.

Ordered H's gift that I can pickup any time. (At the store at Walmart, it cost $9 more than ordering online for free and choosing in-store pickup at Walmart!) I also ordered H's and my gifts for our family gift exchange, one will hopefully arrive before Christmas, the other I'll pick up next week.

I did my stocking stuffers for H and D earlier this week.

I'm also really really hoping some new chairs we ordered from Amazon get here before Christmas when we'll have a bunch of people over. The delivery window is the 20-27th. Today is the third day since I ordered, and they still haven't shipped. I've had to wait a week and a half before just for stuff to leave the warehouse, which is super annoying. I don't like Amazon and try to avoid ordering from them whenever possible.
  • @3rdtime_charmed I also vote that if she wants to come over she can clean for you, that would be a great gift for you!

On gender specific toys/books/movies - DD2 absolutely loves a roaring dinosaur Gma and Gpa gave her for her birthday. Kids don't care!!
  • Question: Has anyone used Simple Contacts for renewing their contact prescription? It seems like they're pretty legit, and it's sounding really attractive since my prescription never fluctuates more than a tiny bit, and I've used the same brand with no issues for years. My insurance doesn't cover routine eye checks, so paying $250 (at least! That's the cheap chain/in-store at Walmart-type place! It's $350 or more if I go to a nice clinic) having an annual check-up and contact fitting for them to just tell me "yea, staying basically the same, no eye health issues" is irritating.
  • @lovesclimbing I haven't used simple contacts specifically, but in general I have ordered contacts online and they have always been fine (I can't remember which company right now because I've mostly been in glasses during this pregnancy).

My sister just sent out my baby shower invites (scheduled for 1/6) and I'm a little nervous that it's not enough notice for a lot of people. Granted it will be small with only 9-10 people on the guest list, including my mom and my sister! And everyone except for two of them live locally.

Oh, I always order contacts online! I shop around to find the best deal. I'm not concerned about the ordering contacts part, just the getting my prescription renewed/updated over the Internet part.
  • @abbykwail I think you’re good with the invites going out now, especially if everyone’s local!
  • Check out may’s “Help me out” thread if you need a laugh this morning!

  • Well, since baby's balls don't drop out of his abdomen until ~25 weeks, that might be her answer? Lol
  • @abbykwail Don't feel bad, my SIL just sent my invites out and my shower is 12/28. Granted all family and a small one, but I feel your pain lol

  • @kristimh80 and @lelkcot so far I have 2 people who said yes and 2 who said no. I'm waiting on 4 more so I will stop worrying! At least it won't just be me and my mom and my sister!!
  • @abbykwail lol I get it! We only were doing this b/c my in laws and some family that's usually not around could be here. I'm 100% ok not to have another one. I'd rather hide under a rock than be certain of attention lol

  • @kristimh80 I agree, I hate being the center of attention!! But this is the first grandkid for my parents and my husband's parents, so what can you do, other than keep it small??
  • @abbykwail Same here...FTM as well. My SIL just sent another message about needing to know if extra ppl need to be invited. I'm like nooo just immediate family :#

  • I just discovered “guided access” on my iPhone... it is awesome. I always thought it was for dummies who didn’t know how to use their phones (lol, which is me apparently). For anyone else not in the know, it can trap your kid in an app so they can’t change apps or do anything else!

  • @kristimh80 my mom and sister just decided to add extended family to the guest list so they have access to our registry! While I would love people to gift us things, I don't want them to feel like they were only invited so that they send presents! 😳 Too late now, though!
  • @abbykwail MH suggested doing that as well. But I feel the same way. I'd rather someone send something because they want to. But hopefully, you'll get a lot of good stuff you really want! :)

  • @mamakate1616 Guided access is awesome! I use it on DD's ipad and sometimes on my phone. Especially if we're facetiming people, she likes to hold the phone but also likes to push big red buttons...
