Re: Glucose Test discussion
My tips are to bring a straw and if you have any control over it (probably not) make sure the drink is cold.
Personally, both times I did the 1 hour I felt drunk for the last 30 min of the test and a period afterward but my blood glucose is usually on the low end of normal after an hour so I think my body just over compensates for the the sugar with an insulin dump.... This time I have to drive myself so I'm planning to hang out in the cafeteria if I feel wonky again.

The drink was not near so bad as I expected. Sweet drinks are a less-than-once-a-month thing for me. I don't drink pop, coffee, tea, Gatorade, juice, energy drinks, etc. because I don't like them, and I expected what's been described to me as flat pop to be truly horrible. I had the lemon-lime drink, and it was ok. Yes, it was gross, but I wasn't barely able to drink it as I expected would be the case.
I didn't really feel sick after drinking it, but I definitely felt a bit weird. My head was just a little woozy.
Take a granola bar or some sort of snack to eat right after you're done. Chug lots of water during it, too.
I also learned if I don’t eat enough healthy fat before bed my glucose drops in the night and then surges before I eat breakfast so my fasting level was over the limit. Wish I had known I could say no to the glucose drink the first time around.
The good news is I did pass so I will not be asked to do the 3-hour! It's weird everyone has a different threshold. I had to be below 140 and was solidly below at 109.
Before my 1 hour, my doc did not encourage any fasting. She did, however, advise to eat a high protein meal with veggies and lay off carbs and sweets. She also suggested going first thing in the morning - which I definitely thought was a good call if you have the option to plan ahead.
If you haven’t tested yet, to give you an idea, you’re handed a drink that’s 10 oz and tastes like super sweet flat soda (mine was orange flavored). You have 5 minutes to finish the drink, and then they take your blood 1 hour after completion. I highly encourage you to drink lots of water during this 1 hour waiting period.
Good luck to all of those who are testing soon and/or awaiting results!
