@knarlytaurus I don’t use an extra layer in the all in ones. They are just one use and would get soggy if you added another layer on top. The pee would just soak through. I can see the appeal to an all in two and I tried one brand, can’t remember the brand name and I didn’t like them. Not because of them being all in two’s but because they were bamboo inserts and I don’t like how hard they feel when wet. Maybe if it was a microfiber insert I might feel definitely. Also that brand was narrow in the crotch and I didn’t like the fit. It was a less popular brand I saw on one of the deal websites like Zullily. I just remembered I also have a couple of Flip covers and liners to go inside. They are nice too but I didn’t love love them. Those you can use the cover over again. Something about the all in one feels so soft.

@mrskoz428 would daycare not do pocket diapers, if you supplied them already stuffed? We used a variety of brands but primarily BumGenius 4.0 (pocket), BumGenius Freetime (AIO) and AppleCheeks (can be used as a pocket or by laying the insert on top). I found we always had leaks with the Freetimes, they just didn’t ever seem to be as absorbent and I struggled with repelling issues as well. We had a front load washer back then and I felt like the freetimes were always needing additional soaking, washing, etc to get them actually clean compared to the others. The 4.0s were my favourite fit, but I did love the AppleCheeks as well. I stuffed both with bamboo or organic liners, as I found microfibre eventually always repelled and leaked for us. We have a nice new top loader now and I’m hoping I can do a better, less strenuous wash routine with it compared to the front loader. My diapers always were the easiest to wash when we went to visit grandma and used her old-school washer with agitator.
I've thought about AI2s just because my son was a super heavy wetter. I'd usually have to use 2 microfiber inserts wrapped in... I can't remember what it was called..corn blanket... Potato thing? It was a vegetable named sack thing? Maybe not I don't remember. Anyway. I needed a lot of layers 😂
@mcewen3 nope. Daycare around here require all in ones. Not really sure why. Probably because it takes less time than having to “stuff” a diaper or snap in a new insert.
We had a nice day! My parents left food for days. I feel really refreshed after a "day off" from parenting, my mom and sister sort of fought me off to do things like feed and bathe DS!
Random question: has anyone used/is looking into using the Hatch smart changing pad that's also a scale? DS had a lot of weight issues and it was so stressful knowing if he was getting enough through breastfeeding that I was thinking it'd be nice to have that this time around. I prefer it over a regular scale even though that's way cheaper because of apartment storage issues.
@DuchessOfCambridge um I didn't know that was a thing but wow the amount of stress that would've relieved... I'm going to look at it, but I may wait until after baby is here and I know if we have the same issues. I don't want to jump the gun assuming he'll have the same issues DS did but then have him be fine and I don't use it much.
@eatinwatermelonseeds I'm wondering if ours are genetic, only because that's what people kept saying to us like "oh you and your husband are small so it's not surprising the baby is small". We're not all that short (I'm 5'3", he's 6') but we're both fairly slender (when not pregnant 😂) but idk.
@robyn2201@mcewen3@eatinwatermelonseeds thank you! I've been considering looking for some used cloth diapers to potentially try it out , but was so overwhelmed by all the options. And there always seemed to be lovers and haters of each type. I'm thinking I may look forfor in one that are a mix of AIO, pockets and covers with inserts (like the flips). Not sure about what daycare up here is be ok with or not, but I'll certainly ask.
@knarlytaurus when I started, one of the local cloth diaper shops offered a trial program. I basically picked out a hodge podge of diapers that interested me and was given 2 weeks to test them out. Any I didn’t like I could return to the shop in exchange for store credit to spend on the brands I ended up loving. I don’t know if anywhere around you offers something similar, but it would be worth looking into
@beccaneu regarding having a newborn and doing laundry. I only would wash every other day and oddly enough I enjoyed doing CD laundry. We also did mostly covers and laying a prefold in so no stuffing diaper pockets at that age.

@mcewen3 that sounds perfect, so I'll definitely ask around. Living in Vermont means that cloth diapering is not a totally foreign concept or a rare thing. I also saw that AppleCheeks are made in Montreal, so perhaps a trip over the border is in order (only ~1 hour if there are no delays at the crossing). There was also a person on Craigslist in Montreal who had an awesome set and cloth diapers for sale that I may check out.
@DuchessOfCambridge it was strange because DS gained quickly (he went from 8lb8oz at birth to 8lb14.5oz 3 days later). But then at about 3 months he started losing weight. Nursing was painful and difficult. It was just a mess. He was then hospitalized when we almost lost him and he didn't gain and was diagnosed failure to thrive shortly after we discharged. It was super stressful. I think for us, everyone just assumed it was because of his hospitalization. Many people actually assumed what I recognized as autism was just because he was hospitalized, too. But I had supply issues, we had feeding issues.
I went on a bus trip Saturday to NY city, it was a very longgggg day. Now I can’t sleep because he’s snoring. Do I A) hit him or just move to the couch?
@knarlytaurus if Montreal is only an hour away you must live quite close to the border! I live in Saskatchewan (and formerly in Alberta) but my extended family all lives in the Chateauguay Valley region, bordering NY but not a far jaunt from Vermont either. Up until this year we have always tried to visit my family in the fall. We don’t get those colours out west and it is just so amazing! DH and I always make a point to do at very least a day trip through Vermont too, it so incredibly beautiful at that time of year!
@mrskoz428 if you’re actually interested in cloth diapering I would double check with daycare.. you would send pocket diapers or ones with snap in inserts already stuffed or snapped and ready to go so it wouldn’t be any different for daycare to deal with than an all in one.
Late to the game, but cloth diapering was awesomeeeee with breastmilk poops and blow outs. They were the only thing that would keep the blow outs in. Laundry got a little grosser after solid food poops happened and we stopped
@mcewen3 we are right up there - north of Burlington, and 2 exits on the interstate to the border (maybe ~15 minutes). Maybe we're a bit more like 1 hour 20 minutes into the city proper. We're almost as far north as your family if they're in Chateaugay, but we're right near Lake Champlain. As a total aside (and not proudly showing off just how little I knew about CA growing up)- when I went to school in Burlington VT, I ended up going with friends to Montréal at the end of my first semester. The first view I had of the skyline blew me away. It was at night and all the skyscrapers were lit up beautifully. I just had no idea that a HUGE city was so close to me in Burlington! Many people refer to Boston as the regional big city, but Montréal blows Boston away size-wise! During the Sesquicentennial and Montréal's 375 year anniversary, I went up with my brother and SIL and it was great (but SO hot and humid).
I CDed my boys from 2 months until they were about 2 1/2 and outgrew the one size. It did add 2 loads of laundry a week, but the savings was awesome and it really isn't bad once you get used to it. I used pockets and would stuff them while watching tv. I did use disposables when we were out and about. I need to replace a few that the elastic has worn out on, but I'm planning to do it again.
I do not have a migraine today and I have not been nauseous until right now (I think I just need to eat) so that is pretty freaking solid. Sorry for the brag but it feels good to finally feel good haha
@DuchessOfCambridge celebrate all the successes! I feel horrible today (up all night last night, then throwing up a bunch this am). I ended up calling out of work but will probably do some later today to make sure everything is ok.
@DuchessOfCambridge glad you had fun with the family and that you're feeling great today! @knarlytaurus hope you start feeling better soon!
everyone else in the cloth diaper convo- I'm so sad I missed this with no service this weekend! I have cloth diapered my son from birth and plan to do the same with our next little one. Anyone thinking about giving it a try I would recommend trying a variety of brands and styles. You never know what is going to work best for you or your baby. As for extra laundry for me it's only an extra load per week at this point. When my son was little it was maybe twice a week. We don't have a ton of laundry anyway so it didn't seem like a huge hassle.
