Re: FFFC 10/26

  • I lurk on name threads in other BMBs, and I’m a little disappointed about the lack of younike names to silently judge - I love alternative spellings in the Catherine/Katharine vein, less so in the unique/younike vein.

Also about how apparently we’re all Anglophiles (though, granted, I too am steering away from the German Gertrudes, Olgas, Adolph/Adolphinas, and Emils in my family tree). I enjoy the puzzles of names that work in both languages!

This isn't very juicy but I'm excited about a work meeting this afternoon. Two reasons: 1, I get to leave early (3:30 opposed to 4:30) and 2, we are all bringing FOOD! YAY FOOD!!!!!

eta: @lyse01 I love judging others for younike names. I judge so many parents for what they name their kids. Did you really think Candy Stripe Princess is a good idea for a name?! (totally made that up)
  • @lyse01 I lurk the baby names board when this one is slow. I feel like they used to get a whole lot more of the younike/unique type stuff but not so much anymore.

  • I'm not sure this is a FFFC but I'm working from home today, and 1) I'm huddled in front of my space heater and just realized that the back of my laptop is insanely hot (oops). and 2) I'm getting very little done, which I will definitely pay for in stress and anxiety later. I know this, but for some reason, am not changing my behavior.

Also, I'm going to my 10 year college reunion this weekend. Since I am pregnant, I will not be drinking (to my great regret). I therefore plan to spend the evening feeling superior and judging all the other people who attend. It worked quite well for me at my 10 year high school reunion, during which I was also pregnant.
  • Lol. I am one of the baby names board bitches. I've toned down a lot from when I first started (you know, trying to reconcile my own biases, realize which is a matter of taste and what's actually not good, etc) but uh, yeah.

Honestly, it seems like most boards outside of ttgp/loss/birthmonth are slow/dead. Which is kinda nice cause it's hard enough keeping up here, but also means there aren't the popcorn threads there used to be.

As for a FFFC..... I judge the shit out of people with huge trucks/SUVs/hummers. That judgement doubles if you live in the burbs or the city. They are so wasteful, and unless you're a contractor or are hauling trailers/horses you don't need them.

I also assume dudes who own them without good reason are insecure about their masculinity.
  • Had to chime in on names!  While not a fan of younike names and name spellings, I am totally on board in judging them.  I feel like it's not real, but there is always a story going around about somebody that named their child "Da'fuq" and it always gives me a good laugh.  I am probably a little excessive - probably why I have such a horrid time naming my own children - but like, why are we suddenly replacing "ck" with "x" and acting like that's not speshul?

  • On the naming stuff... I wonder if there are some class / education and racial components to consider though. I do judge people sometimes, but then I wonder if I’m being an elitist.
  • I was crazy swamped early this week at work and then today and yesterday I did minimal work and watched netflix and hulu. (btw a million little things is a great new show) Today my boss is out of office and I am not even hiding my lack of doing things

  • @Bringmemylongswordho yes, it's something I'm trying hard to work on too. I really don't want to be an elitist d*ck or racist, even if it is an implicit / cultural bias. A lot of times I struggle to pronounce names in my classes, and not just the foreign names. There are a lot of yunique spellings that really confuse me and I end up mispronouncing. But I also view it as my own problem, and something I need to get better at. I do have to say, I have seen some VERY interesting and unusual names.

@professormama I can see that sometimes being the case, but you can't deny that currently there's a ton of privileged white people making up names and spellings, and I have no issue judging them.  It seemed like celebrities really kicked things off a while back when we all started noticing what many of them were naming their children.  I remember looking on in horror as GP named her kid Apple, but she was hardly the first (I'm looking at you, Rumer Willis, and I'm probably not thinking of plenty of older ones).

    Edited because "Rumer" was autocorrected!

  • +1 to judging younike names.

FFFC: I think Christmas is incredibly overrated and commercialized. Seeing decorations up before Halloween makes me cringe.

  • I used to judge names, but I don't honestly care anymore. I also agree there there is almost always a classist/racist undertone to name judgement.

100% agree on the big trucks. I live in the land of oversized trucks & egos, and they love to "roll coal" all over everyone and everything. Ugh.

  • @Bringmemylongswordho 100% with you on the giant SUVs/trucks/hummers. When I bought an SUV for the first time I hated myself, but now that I'm pregnant, and we have 3 dogs, and thinking about more kids, it feels right! I like to imagine that I'm superior to the "other" folks with giant vehicles because mine is a super tiny SUV. I judged a guy in a hummer so hard at a rest area a few months back because he took up two spaces and still couldn't park correctly in them.

  • We are getting a truck soon. And I’m not very excited about it, especially because if it gets bad gas mileage then I’m going to get stuck driving it since my husband commutes to work. I get the logic - my husband hunts and you definitely don’t want to throw dead animals inside your car. But ughhhh.
  • @Bringmemylongswordho I agree about the oversized trucks and hummers. But I love my SUV. I feel much safer, love having all the room and it’s helpful to me to sit higher since I have issues with depth perception and can therefore see everything better. Even if DH convinces me to get rid it I will replace it with another SUV.

  • I used to think when you toilet paper someone's house, it was teepeeing their house.  I couldn't figure out what toilet paper had to do with teepees.  It was only a couple of years ago that I realized it was TPing someone's house...because...you know...Toilet Paper. *facepalm

I've also started listening to Christmas music because it's cold and cloudy.  And I love the spirit of Christmas

  • FFFC: Sometimes, I feel SUPER entitled to have an off day.  99% of the time, I work really hard to be empathetic and logical - but on the rare day I'm off, I MILITANTLY expect everyone around me to show me the same grace I show them.  If my best friend, whose fires I spend about 10 hours per week putting out, or my mom, who complains to me about trivial things on a daily basis, try to dismiss me when I'm in a bad place, I completely lose it.  I hear how bratty that sounds, and yet...

  • Ugh yessssss on MLM!  Some of the products actually look decent but I just can't get past seeing it as a ponzi scheme.  I really wouldn't mind trying some of the Rodan & Fields products if I didn't see it as condoning the whole thing.

  • first of all, guys, you're spelling it wrong: it's UNIKE. no shit- when I substitute taught a few years ago, there was a student who had this name. and it legit took me a few seconds to realize it was "unique."

@Bringmemylongswordho, it's even better when there's a ballsac hanging off the back!  :D that shit makes me laugh so hard.

my FFFC: I swear around my kid. my husband & I give zero fucks about it. we've made a lot of sacrifices since becoming parents. I'm not about to give up my freedom of speech. (but, really, we're also giving that up, too, since now my son is at an age where he repeats everything we say, so now I can't bitch on a road trip coming home from my sister's b/c the next time we see her, he'll be like, "mama says you have stinky towels, auntie. and why don't you let your kids have a little sugar sometimes? they're fat anyway.")

  • I’m also an atheist and I enjoy Christmas, but I enjoy it in December, not before Halloween and thanksgiving. It’s become too overwhelming to have three months for one holiday 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • 2nd FFFC: I, too, am a non-religious who loves christmas. I love it so much that I'm usually listening to xmas carols by july.

I read something once that you weren't supposed to feel your abdominal muscles move when you do it, and well, whoops. I'm apparently super weak.
  • @batmama31 DH and I go back and forth on swearing in front of DD. She’s totally picking everything up though, 2 nights ago she told me I was “a pain in the ass” cause we weren’t getting there fast enough.

We really should curb it but I am having a hard time, I need to look into something that might help but not sure what. He’s better most of the time but occasionally looses his temper and swears a lot.

  • @thatbaintforbetty, that's hilarious! my son has repeated what we say, too. I lost my cool w/ him and I said he was being fucking something or other, and he replied with, "I'm not a fucking." and I was like, "yeah, you're right. I'm sorry."

but when he uses swear words any other time, we just tell him those are grown up words that he cannot use. the other day he came back with, "but I wanna say fuck"
  • @harveyisaboysname ugh yes. so many people from my old bmb got into MLMs after we went to facebook. I know at least one of the girls actually had to declare bankruptcy because of lularoe.
  • @professormama wow, that's extreme! I can't stand MLM's either, the products are usually terrible and cost way too much. A few girls I know are still pushing Rodan + Fields; it's the same active ingredients as over the counter/drugstore acne face wash but it costs $100's of dollars. Hard pass for me.

  • +1 to racist/classist undertones. I’d really like to learn about naming practices in other cultures (broad definition) to understand where those parents are coming from, but the Bump doesn’t seem to be the place to do it. Honestly, I try in the name threads to get a sense of what appeals to the person asking, then suggest whatever fits, whether or not I like it.

+1 to vowing not to support MLMs.

+1 to Christmas being awesome. I get sad that there’s not enough Advent services to sing all the carols.
  • I curse in front of my son, but he's still too young to repeat.  I probably won't stop unless his next word is "fuck," honestly.  My parents always cursed in front of me and I didn't until I was a teenager, granted now I curse like a sailor.

To carry on with my unfit mothering, my FFF is that I let my 10 month old eat whatever he wants short of fast food and candy.  He always wants what we're eating and I always give it to him unless maybe it's a choking hazard, whether it's something healthy or cake.  Pretty sure his favorite food is pizza and I'm not sorry.

  • one thing I hated when my last bmb transitioned to facebook was the 'keeping up with the jonses' feel that it had... I never would have even known about things like tula or decorative cloth diapers (we got plain bumgenius ones and they were fine). Or a bunch of other stuff basically. I ended up leaving the facebook group after just a few months because it felt like too much work. I don't know if I'll join if this group ever does transition to facebook... but we will see...
  • On the name thing...my first name is legit Izzy. Not short for anything. All my siblings have normal names but not me! So with baby coming I’m super aware of weird spellings and possible nicknames for each name. I don’t want to put my kid through the stuff I had to deal with. (Still deal with)

Big trucks are stupid. DH and I just got a midsize SUV and we love it. He has a sporty little car and I told him I need a mom car lol so that’s what we did. Most of the huge trucks around here (Midwest)I couldn’t even think about getting in. I’m tall for a female but I would need a ladder to even attempt something like that! I get the need for trucks but why all jacked up?! I’ve never been like wow look at that guys really tall truck, I should date him.

When end my sister was young I used to get creative with my cursing. She is 16 years younger than I so I was in my teens/early 20’s when we would go somewhere in the car and I would want to cuss someone out so I came up with melonfarmer, biscuitface, fudgecakes and stuff like that. Lol I got used to it!
