So I had my first appointment Friday, and my OB informed me I can’t eat queso. I knew I can’t eat most soft cheeses, but for some reason it never occurred to me that I can’t eat queso. Idk what I am going to do with my life now 😩

@fifthemperorofthesea you can always ask if it’s pasteurized. It’s uncommon for cheese in the US to be unpasteurized (unless it’s imported) so I’d double check. I ate plenty of pasteurized soft cheeses my last pregnancy and will this time too. If I couldn’t verify it was pasteurized I did stay away.
@k2k2tog I’d be interested in reading but hesitant to share - my birth story is not nice and I wouldn’t want to scare FTMs into thinking a situation like mine is what they would end up with - though when I was a FTM I liked reading the good and the bad to feel more prepared but I know not everyone feels that way.
@RoseShadow873 midwives are an awesome option but I think OBs get more of a bad rap than they deserve - you just have to find the right one. My OB is amazing. She’s very up to date on the latest medical info, she truly acts like she cares about me as a person, and anytime she makes a recommendation she gives me a full explanation as to why. Also, not all OBs are against doing what you want. Mine was all for me trying for a drug-free birth and highly supportive of my (simple one page) birth plan. She was against using instruments or an episiotomy unless 100% necessary. She’s actually urging me to have a VBAC this time around because she thinks I’d be a good candidate for it. There’s a huge misconception that OBs just want to cut you open and get the baby out but that’s really not always the case. I do agree that you are muchhhhh more likely to have someone you know delivering you if you go with a midwife.
@DuchessOfCambridge I agree it just depends on your OB. With my daughter they didn't even consider a csection because they swore my baby at most would be 5 pounds and she was 8. The doctor with my son was a c-section happy doctor. When they gave me a sizing scan and told me he should weigh 6 pounds at most (lies) she wanted to give me a csection for a baby just weighing that. The ob I have now is all for a vaginal birth even if its an 8 pounder since the last 2 where an I did it with no complications.

@DuchessOfCambridge thanks for the info! My OB said to steer clear, so I assumed all queso was unpasteurized.
@RoseShadow873 If you want to learn more about what type of practice is best for you, I’d recommend getting “What to Expect When Expecting”. It has a lot of information on the differences of midwives and OBs, and different types of practices.
I chose to go with an OBGYN group practice. So far, I really like my OB. She has answered all of my questions very helpfully (even the stupid ones lol), and has made me feel very comfortable. I did choose an OB that was younger because I heard some who are older can sometimes not care for your emotional needs as much. Also, she isn’t established yet and doesn’t have kids of her own, so I feel it’s more likely she will be there when it’s time for me to give birth, and not on vacation or something.

@fifthemperorofthesea I’d ask for clarification on the queso thing — I can’t figure out why someone would have a problem with your eating queso. It’s usually either made with velveeta (which isn’t exactly healthy, but it’s not even real cheese so it’s not any worse for you when pregnant) or cheeses like cheddar that are very rarely unpasteurized. Usually in the US, if you see raw cheese anywhere it’s on a really fancy cheese plate and clearly marked. It’s not snuck into inexpensive stuff like queso.
There is a traditional Mexican cheese called queso fresco that you aren’t supposed to eat when you’re pregnant but I really don’t think that that’s in what we think of as queso dip. That’s the crumbly white cheese you see on top of tacos etc at traditional Mexican restaurants. There’s nothing traditional Mexican about queso dip which is more Tex Mex 😉
I only suggest that you follow up for a specific explanation because I love queso very dearly and it would pain me if someone had to give it up due to a misunderstanding.
@anonellis she did say queso fresco when telling me to avoid it, and I assumed that meant queso dip! Now I feel stupid haha! But thank you I was honestly so upset about it. 😂 I’ll make sure to ask about my OB about it again though, and when I go out to eat to ask if the queso is pasteurized.
Edited to add information. Sorry I edit my posts too much 😅

@fifthemperorofthesea my doctor can be pretty conservative. She says even pastuerized soft cheeses like fresh mozzerella, brie, etc. should be avoided which many others say is fine. She DID say that when heated through (like on pizza) it's fine so even if queso fresco was in queso dip (which it isn't usually), as long as it's heated at some point to kill potential listeria which is the concern in those cheeses, which it should be, then it would be fine.
