STM+ Check In Week of 10/3

Re: STM+ Check In Week of 10/3

  • @bluesky24 Thank you for that counterpoint, I got mine at my last appointment too and was starting to freak out.  My NP also said they're suggesting it as soon as possible.

  • @bluesky24 I read that, also (re: the inconclusive study) and wasn't sure how to proceed.  After my OB bringing it up, however, I will hold off until the 2nd trimester unless -- like he said -- we start seeing a lot of cases.  Even with the flu shot, I've become so ill with the flu (and subsequent complications) that I was nearly hospitalized.  It's not always effective.

My son saw his pediatrician last week, who suggested we wait a couple more weeks to get his flu shot.
  • @bluesky24 @mrsdee15 I got mine at my first appointment as well, and after reading this I went onto the CDC website and found extensive studies that state there is no link to miscarriage and it is safe during all trimesters.
  • @maggieg183 oops - I'm usually better at my phrasing but I meant what did you not intend to do - it just doesn't sound the same that way, though. Not trying to perpetuate moms judging moms. No judgement from me on screen time, even when I thought I would be limiting, I just read the research and thought I'd wait until DD was 18 months. Didn't say anything to anyone about it, even DH. I suppose it's easier to not judge when you don't have friends with kids, though, so maybe I would have had more judgmental moments if I was around more kids before having DD.

  • @kvh22 as far as exercise, I've always been told to keep doing your normal.  So if you're a runner, just keep running, etc etc.  Monitor yourself during exercise and try not to overdo it to the point of being seriously out of breath.  You've been picking up your toddler prior to pregnancy, unless there are complications that will restrict your activity I'm sure they'll tell you its totally fine.  I hope it is anyways, I don't have to tote my kids around anymore but I've definitely been picking my 3 year old up a fair bit and even my 48lb 5 year old yesterday when she needed to be hauled into a timeout.

  • @mcewen3 thanks! My barre studio told me no twisting or splits (ha! but I do *try* which they say not to do anymore) in the first trimester and that there'd be more limitations once I start showing. I thought that was odd but maybe they're just playing it safe. And I figure I should be fine picking up my <25 lb 13 month old. Last pregnancy I always thought of questions right after my appointment so just want to avoid that if possible.

  • @kvh22 my doctor always told me to just listen to my body.  Most of the moves you shouldn't perform, you really can't anyways, lol.  But I could totally see fitness studios playing it super safe on things like that, I would guess even more so in the U.S. where things are so much more litigious than up here in Canada.

  • How many kids do you already have? Ages? One little boy, 14 months

How are your other kids doing this week? He's great! He had his first febrile seizure last week, which was terrifying, but he's back to his bouncy self!

    Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions?
My symptoms are so so different his time! I feel awful! Think it's a girl :-)? Also, when I type on my cell on The Bump, words keep popping up and getting chosen for me! How do I make this stop??

GTKY: What did you say you would never do as a parent before your child was born and have absolutely done? (choose one or many). DS is so young, so not much yet.  I'm cool with screen time! However, I'm a huge safe sleep nerd, and I stuck to my guns about that, even though many predicted I would waiver from that when DS didn't sleep well. So, I suppose this is the opposite-- something I stuck to even when it was really really rough!

  • I bet seeing your little boy like that was absolutely awful, @alexva2017.  Yikes.  I'm sorry you both went through that.
  • @wishiwaspreggo You are my freaking hero right now.

@eatinwatermelonseeds Thank you!! I also looked around a bit, and the CDC information definitely helps.

  • @wishiwaspreggo I was basically raised by Jerry Springer, Jenny Jones and Sega. Now I'm a $200 test away from people trusting me with their health. That screams success to me 😂 and I have not once cheated on my husband with his dog. Or any of the weird things my "parents" put on their shows.
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds Ah, those were the days.  When I was 12 or 13 I got really sick and missed a month of school (nasty, nasty virus), and Jenny Jones, Ricki Lake, and the old Maury before it was all paternity tests were all that was on all day.  It was pretty fun - well, not the sick part, but the rest of it.

@mrsdee15 yasss. Loved ALL of those. Would just run through their morning line up. I so miss the old Maury. He was the best. Probably the most appropriate for a 10 year old 😂
  • ^ btw, apologies if that was super annoying. I’m pretty annoying about vaccines 😂 I made all friends and family who wanted to meet DS before he was 6 months old get an updated Tdap and flu shot. I even refused to visit my parents until my sister and grandma got it. He had enough issues at birth, he didn’t need more and I wasn’t willing to take that gamble on my own baby 🤷‍♀️ I won’t require a shot for this baby because it’ll be May (DS was born in full on flu season and a bad one).

@DuchessOfCambridge I'm pretty fanatical about most vaccines as well and absolutely should have been better about getting the flu vaccine before having a kid. Living in California, I'm both reassured that the personal exemption allowance went away but distraught that so many people wanted to use it and apparently now just ask their doctor to say their kids are "too weak" to get the vaccines. Dropping below herd immunity levels caused some bad outbreaks which are completely avoidable. I saw a copy of the vaccine friendly plan at my brother and SIL's when we visited before they had their baby (6 weeks old now) and I am not letting this LO near their son if they're doing a modified vaccine schedule since there is NO SCIENCE behind it at all which the author even said. *TW* A childhood friend passed away from complications of the flu the year we got pregnant with DD - his mom is an ER nurse and was taking care of him but there was nothing they could do. I felt dumb for not getting the vaccine although I do put it in a slightly different category than MMR, etc. Anyways, I was planning to get my flu shot at DD's 15 month appointment (it wasn't out yet at her 12 month) in November when they'll give her hers. Just wasn't sure if I should be trying to get it earlier or not.

ETA since I mentioned MMR: everyone should know this already/their doctor should step in before getting to this point but you can't have live vaccines like MMR while pregnant. I think chicken pox is not recommended as well? Anyways, obviously make sure your provider knows you're pregnant before getting any vaccines.

  • @kvh22 well said. I get my vaccines through my OB when pregnant and she’s been upfront if I shouldn’t get something. I had to really push to get DS the flu vaccine before we left for our trip, they had it in hospital but due to “hierarchies”, pediatrics didn’t have it yet. They snuck us in when I mentioned we were traveling. I know it’s not effective for two weeks but it still made me feel better and he’ll be able to get his second round at his 12 mo appointment.

  • @eatinwatermelonseeds - ditto! I have a master’s degree now and I’ve been employed full-time since I was 22. I think I’m doing okay. It’s just silly to worry about “screen time” so much. Touch screens and devices are our reality in 2018. They’re not going anywhere and as time I passes will be more integrated in their education. It just is what it is. The iPhone is our techno-devil that the media loves to demonize. Our grandkids will have a techno-devil we can’t even fathom right now. We can’t stop progress - the best we can do is try to keep up so we don’t become like our parents TOO much where we can’t use the latest gadgets because we stopped trying 😂
  • @wishiwaspreggo my mom sent me a picture today of a link and told me to write it down and type it in the browser because "I don't know how to send a link." I so did not want to explain it to her, so I just did what she asked 😂
  • Alright well now I’m having mild panic because I’m 10 weeks and got my flu shot today. Hopefully it really is not a risk.

@aels12 go check out the CDC website. It's a reliable source, with links to studies that prove safety during all trimesters. I'm sorry this post stressed you out (it did me a bit too), but research is valuable. Also, going to Google scholar and researching anything medical that you are concerned about can really help you. It's filled with a ton of peer reviewed articles, just pay attention to the dates and source bias.
  • @eatinwatermelonseeds I try to stay away from google for anything pregnancy related 😬 but I’ll check out the CDC! Thanks!
  • Google scholar is a different world lol. No blogs, no opinions, no scary stories. Just facts and statistics.
  • @aels12 I'm sure it's fine. I'm sorry to have alarmed you. I'm being ridiculously cautious out of an abundance of ignorance as to what caused my 4 losses. My OB did not flat out tell me to not get the flu shot. He said that if he were me, that he'd wait until the 2nd trimester unless we started seeing a lot of cases of flu. In that case, he'd want me to get the shot for protection.
  • @DuchessOfCambridge @kvh22 @eatinwatermelonseeds
PREACH! Thank you. The fear-mongering about vaccines is appalling. And @blessedinmt - not throwing shade at you at all. I'm annoyed that your OB told you that. It's poorly researched, not evidence-based and its irresponsible for him as a practitioner to do that. Like I said, it's a personal choice but he shouldn't have mentioned a study that's been discredited.

@kvh22 fellow barre lover here! I haven't talked to my studio yet about pregnancy but they have this whole guide online for how to modify. I've been pretty terrible about going recently but look forward to staying strong during this pregnancy!!

  • Thanks everyone. Even if it was discredited it still freaks me out a little that it was even a thing at all, but everything will be fine, PGAL brain just makes me a little crazy. I appreciate the sources to check out to make me feel better!
  • So it seems I just missed a conversation about the flu shot and vaccines.  Thank. God.  Im not even going to scroll back up to see what I missed.

@kvh22 ah, I get it and I don't feel like you were perpetuating judgment on moms with the GTKY.  Please don't feel that way from my comment. I never intended that.  I just come from a community where moms are extreme with their judgmental nature and it's impossible to do something right by everyone - like literally a parent just called me during my prep time to tell me that I made a minor mistake on an answer key for the algebra class homework and told me that next time they will go to the principal with mistakes as they shouldn't be there because they cause confusion in students...like, am I not allowed to be human?? Ugh. Due to that atmosphere, I suppose I just never wanted to be that mom that thought they would never do something when, honestly, it's impossible to predict.  My son is as much a product of me as he is his dad and because DH was a holy terror, I knew I would pull out all the stops to keep my life sane  :D

One thing I never really intended to do as a parent was feed my kid so much fruit!  We started out on our real food journey so promisingly with mashed peas and spinach and cauliflower, but the kid loves fruit. I can't seem to get anything else in his mouth, except maybe boxed mac'n'cheese or a PBJ, so fruit it is.  I feel like we go through 3 lbs of raspberries every week. So. darn. expensive. One thing that's nice is he's awfully regular.  It makes potty training nice as he's rarely constipated. Upside?
  • @MaggieG183 my daughter is doing the same thing with fruits! She'll drink milk,  water,  and have a ton of fruits throughout the day but she won't eat regular food. I actually called her pediatrician yesterday for advice and was told that she's learning that she has control over what she eats. As long as she's not losing weight or is dehydrated,  she's fine. She also said that we shouldn't express frustration or anger when she refused to est regular food because it will cause bad food associations.  So for now, we just keep offering her all sorts of food and let her eat what she wants.  At least fruits are healthy!

  • @expandcontract good to know someone else is going through this with me! I keep telling myself, at least he's getting all sorts of vitamins and great fiber. I try to be very upbeat about it all too, but I can't wait to have my adventurous little eater back. I just keep putting food in front of him to try and hoping the consistent exposure to it will encourage him to test it out.
  • @MaggieG183 you're doing the right thing,  girl! Here's to our crazy fruit lovers!

  • @aels12 maybe this will help. The sample size was ridiculously small, only two groups of 485 women each. You need at least 500 to have a fair study. Within those 485, 17/485 and 4/485 had miscarriages - that’s 3.5% and 0.8% had a correlation (NOT causation). All they saw was that the ones who DID have miscarriages had had flu shots. They didn’t talk about allllll the other women who had flu shots and no miscarriages. Honestly, even though the researchers made it clear they didn’t actually find anything and still recommended pregnant women get the flu shot, they never should have said anything. It was really irresponsible of them, for precisely this reason, it scares people when there’s no need! Those women could have had miscarriages for any reason at all and (idk, potential TW?) the chance of miscarriage in the first tri is so high to begin with, it’s ridiculous to associate it with the flu shot. Generally, it’s said miscarriage chance in first tri is 25%. Now compare that to the 3.5% or 0.8% the study “found”.

If the flu shot was truly an issue, we would know by now and the results would be drastic. What is also not discussed is the MULTITUDE of studies done showing the flu vaccine is completely safe for pregnant women. As I also mentioned earlier, there’s a risk (note: risk - might happen, not “will definitely happen”) of baby developing heart problems and birth defects should you get the flu while pregnant.

I know when you hear something frightening like that it’s hard to shake it and I know I may not change your mind, but I do hope I made you feel better. You are in charge of your own pregnancy but please know all the facts and true risks when make decisions.

@blessedinmt I’m not at all saying you should do this, but personally I would find a new OB stat. I wouldn’t be able to trust his knowledge at all with him bringing that study up. I love my current OB and think she’s a genius but if she mentioned that study (she wouldn’t), I’d find a new one in a second.

SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG, YOU GUYS. I just don’t want people to be lied to and frightened, it isn’t fair.

  • @MaggieG183 @expandcontract Same here with my DS. Though, fruits are just slowly coming as before it was just dry carbs (cereals, bars, etc). And your pediatrician gave great advice. Our food therapist says the exact same and honestly the chiller we are about it, the better he does. Like, this kid who had maybe 5 foods a couple of months ago, almost ate broccoli!!!!
  • Hey ladies, I was considering making a new board about this but didn’t want the bump admin people to go crazy with power and yell at me like they yell at everyone but....I was looking to hear from moms who are currently breastfeeding. What are your plans (weaning, tandum nursing) and what has your doctor told you about it? How old is your breastfeeding LO?

My daughter is 8 months old and my OB told me that there wasn’t enough info that proves or disproves that it can lead to miscarriage so I can continue for now but will probably have to wean before she turns one in January. She said BF causes the uterus to contract so it may not be safe in late pregnancy. I was really hoping to BF her till 18 months (till July) like I did with my son, but that probably won’t happen now.
  • Thanks @DuchessOfCambridge. I already got the shot so it’s too late now, I just had never heard of that study or anything related to a flu shot and miscarriages, if I had I would have at least asked the dr about it before going ahead with it, just to be as informed as possible. I’m sure everything will be fine, your points about the study make complete sense!
  • @sketner610 my son weaned himself at 11 months old😭 However, I had intended to nurse as long as he wanted, including tandem nursing if I had gotten pregnant sooner. I have several friends who carried full term babies while nursing their toddlers and continued on to tandem nurse their kiddos. Maybe speak with a lactation consultant about your concerns? Since they deal specifically with breastfeeding they may have more info.
  • @Sketner610 I think it’s fine to start a thread about that, the issue is when people start threads like “is anyone else nauseous” or “who’s tired”. Like, we’re pregnant, the majority is nauseous or tired and we can only gripe about it so much. Im not nursing anymore but for what it’s worth I know many women who have nurses well into their second pregnancies. It’s true that BFing can cause uterine contractions and your dr would know way more than me but just from personal experience, I know women still nursing while pregnant and they weren’t told to stop. I’m curious to hear what others do and if nursing while pregnant is really not recommended.
