How far along are you? How big is baby? 5 weeks. Appleseed.
How many kids do you already have? Ages? One DS that just turned 2 at the end of August.
How are your other kids doing this week? He’s got a runny nose and gross cough and has been waking up at night. I’m dreading cold and flu season already. Other than that, he’s been his usual wild, non-stop self. Dinner time for him is enough to make me want to pull my hair out because he won’t just sit down and eat. He also doesn’t listen at all. If he hadn’t had his ears checked, I’d swear he can’t hear. So stubborn. It’s a good thing he’s cute.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? I’ve been eating practically everything that won’t eat me first, so I’ve been trying to go to the gym on my lunch breaks and walk on the treadmill, but I’ve still probably gained a couple of pounds. I really don’t want to put on too much weight in the beginning, but I don’t know what to do about constantly feeling hungry. I definitely didn’t deal with this with DS this early. Any advice?
GTKY: What is something that your friends would consider “so you”? I guess I’m pretty basic and boring because nothing really comes to mind.
@zuuls_mom@secicc12@kipper-2 I’ve also been worried about how the routine will go with 2. My husband is pretty helpful overall, but I usually have to ask him rather than him just doing it. Bedtime worries me the most. I still hold DS until he falls asleep before putting him in his crib. “They” say the 2nd baby kind of adapts to the schedule you have, so fingers crossed that’s true.
@k2k2tog I’m bad about overthinking everything too.
@vivereidescent I’m a pretty firm believer in the leaps. Maybe because I needed something to explain why DS suddenly acted so fussy or wouldn’t sleep. He did seem to go through them when the leaps were. Good luck! They’re rough!
@msb615 I know it's hard, but I would encourage you not to stress out about the numbers on the scale right now. Focus on being healthy rather than on not gaining weight. I try to keep our house stocked with fruit and veggies and load up dinners with as many veggies as possible. Eat consistently - I need to eat at least 6 times a day to feel ok (though my issue is nausea, not appetite). Getting a little exercise when you can is awesome because it will help during delivery and because of all the other reasons exercise is awesome.
DD1: June 2014 - VBM4lyfe DD2: October 2016 DC3: coming May 2019
@msb615 no advice, but I'm in the same boat. I gained a lot of weight my first pregnancy, too. Part of it is just how my body responds to pregnancy. Part of it is that eating throughout the day keeps nausea away for me. I just tell myself it's only temporary and I'll lose the weight again once I stop BF'ing.
@DuchessOfCambridge We switched to a rear-facing convertible when DD was about 10 months. I loved the bucket and its convenience, but I just couldn't lift it without really struggling. As another mentioned, I think as long as you were doing something before pregnancy, it's okay to keep doing it (lifting-wise), but it just got too hard to carry the bucket and the baby together for me. @vivereidescent Another Leaps follower here, the leaps have definitely coincided with DD's fussy periods. She's just coming out of one (thank goodness), they can be rough. Hang in there!
How far along are you? How big is baby? 7+6, blueberry
How many kids do you already have? Ages? DD will be 1 in about two weeks, I can't believe it.
How are your other kids doing this week? Pretty good! Last weekend we taught DD to put her arms in the air when we put our arms up for a touchdown, and now she does it all the time because everyone laughs. She then gives herself a round of applause. It's adorable and hilarious.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? Not at the moment, I guess. I can't remember my symptoms at this stage for DD, but I haven't felt as much in the way of sore breasts this time. Anyone else experience anything similar?
GTKY: What is something that your friends would consider “so you”? Oh... hmm. That's really tough. I guess I can be super literal, usually in times of stress. For example, when I first met DH's friends at a baseball game, they asked me where our tickets were. I replied that they were in my back pocket. It took me a second to realize she meant where in the arena they were. Oh, well.
DD born PPROM preemie at 36 weeks on 10/1/17 after over a year TI, then 3 failed IUIs, and finally a successful IVF FET.
Due with #2 5/2/19 after HIO once in my FW, because apparently that's how life works now. Team Blue!
@k2k2tog Thank you! I definitely don’t want to worry over the weight gain, but more so be conscious of it. With my first pregnancy, I had the whole “eating for two” mentality. I gained maybe 35 pounds, but it took me close to 18m to get it all off (plus the extra 10 I gained before I got pregnant), so I just want to be more aware this time around. I’ve been getting on the treadmill for 30 minutes during my lunch break this week at least, but I’m so bad about over eating and not eating very healthy. I need to just stock up on healthy snacks rather than snacking on chips or ice cream 🤦🏼♀️
@sleepy33 I hope bf’ing will work out better this time. I think I was banking on that a little more than I should have with DS. It does eventually come off, but it took so long for me that I just got back into prepregnancy clothes this year. My son just turned too. Granted I should’ve started working out and eating better way before I did, but I just don’t want to have a large amount to lose this time around.
@mrsdee15 I had mild symptoms my first pregnancy, but sore boobs were definitely one of the worst. This time, no sore boobs at all. It's weird. Part of me wonders if it's because I just weaned last month.
@msb615 I'm feeling the same way. I'm not trying to diet or anything but just make healthier choices. Towards the end of last pregnancy I was legit eating 2 lava cakes from Trader Joe's a week. I'm petite to begin with so the 30 or so I gained wasn't insane but it has been hard to lose. I dropped a lot right after my CS but the rest stuck around until I weaned. I got 4.5lbs away from pre-pregnancy weight before getting pregnant again (I was working out 3-5x/week and doing intermittent fasting - which I've stopped). I try to go to Stroller Strides 3x/week and I'm going to attempt to have more self control with chocolate. Also, I feel you on the needing to eat to not feel nauseous! Carbs were sadly the only thing that made me feel okay.
@DuchessOfCambridge Exactly. I was back to prepregnancy weight somewhat quick, but those last 10lbs stuck like glue. I haven’t been naseous thankfully, but because of that, I feel like I eat nonstop. Carbs=
@secicc12 just a little warning about babies close in age and potty training — it is very common for newly potty trained little ones to revert back to diapers when a new sibling arrives. It’s their way of getting more time with mom and dad who are now so focused on someone else. I wouldn’t try too hard to get your LO potty trained before arrival of little bro/sis. 14 months is pretty early for that.
Mommy to an angel baby and a sweet little girl Earth side.
How many kids do you already have? Ages? 1 DD- 3 1/2
How are your other kids doing this week? She's doing okay. Very clingy as usual. She doesn't know I am pregnant yet but its almost like she senses something. We haven't told her because she has a BIG mouth and we aren't ready to share yet.
@DuchessOfCambridge@msb615 I feel you both on the weight gain thing. I gained close to 35 lb with my DD (who is now 2) and just a few months ago got into really good shape again. I am already getting into bad habits of eating sweets at night and all.the.carbs. I really need to rein it in. I hated not feeling good about myself postpartum.
How far along are you? How big is baby? 5+4
How many kids do you already have? Ages? 1 DD- 2 and 1 month
How are your other kids doing this week? She's doing fine. Had a tantrum in the parking lot of Petsmart yesterday during which she legit laid down on the ground IN THE PARKING LOT. I scooped her up and carried her kicking and screaming to the car. A mom gave me a knowing glance. Otherwise...she's doing swell. As my mom said, "life's a bowl of cherries as long as she's doing what she wants to do." SO TRUE.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? I caught a cold from DD so feel like absolute crap. I forgot how brutal it can be to get sick while pregnant and unable to take any cold meds!
GTKY: What is something that your friends would consider “so you”? Trying out some new recipe or eating at a new restaurant (more pre-kids, haha)
@LifeofLauren2 Totally agree! We are definitely not forcing it. After she started waking up dry from her naps and showing some interest, we thought we'd give it a whirl. I fully expect this to be an ongoing process with a regression (or multiple) after LO arrives. Thanks for your input
@bluesky24 solidarity on the tantrums. My DS sat down in the gym parking lot the other day because I asked him to walk the 10 feet to the door instead of being carried.
@bluesky24 I have been awful about snacking at night. I bought healthy snacks yesterday, so I’m hoping if I’m going to be snacky, I can at least try to be healthy. I also felt the same about the postpartum weight. I just didn’t feel like myself, and that’s not a great feeling at all. As far as tantrums go, I’m right there with you. He’s happy as a clam as long as he’s doing/getting what he wants. When he doesn’t, he’s screaming, crying and throwing himself on the floor. Drives me crazy.. And it scares me to death because people say 3 is worse. 😳
@msb615 three is worse - they start to argue back. And the screaming is accompanied by whining and pouting. My son went through a phase where he would slam his bedroom door behind him. So infuriating.

How are your other kids doing this week? My oldest just got glasses for the first time and is NOT excited about them (even though his dad & I, plus tons of other family wear them already). Hoping he gets used to them quickly! 🙁
Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? I know I'm lucky I'm not actually throwing up, but I feel CONSTANTLY nauesous anytime I'm not eating. As a teacher and someone who was a bit overweight before this surprise, snacking constantly is not ideal but I'm working on keeping healthy snacks stocked so I can avoid the nausea.
GTKY: What is something that your friends would consider “so you”? Talking really quickly, overthinking things
@GeorgiaGirl1230 I would never let my parents pull my teeth out either. Our 5 year old just lost her first tooth too! She was totally chicken to do ANYTHING until it came out so she literally would sit at the dinner table and wiggle it with her tongue until it finally popped out and we could all get back to life.
@ruby696 I've had those worries as well. DD1 & DD2 are 2 years apart (nearly to the day). This one will be nearly 4 & 6 years younger than his/her older sisters. But I hope that the age gap makes the new baby more fun and less of a burden on the older ones. We are dealing with that right now, whenever DD1 has a friend over DD2 always tries to play too. They get along pretty well most of the time, but sometimes you just don't want a 3 year old trailing behind. I also really look forward to all the extra 1-1 time that I get to have with this newest LO. With sisters in school I will get to soak in ALL the baby time
@nopegoat you are superwoman!! I often feel like I'm spinning with just my 2. You are amazing!
@zuuls_mom Try not to worry too much. These things have a way of finding their own rhythm. DH has always had a pretty demanding job and often doesn't make it home by dinner/bedtime. (Actually, the past year or so he usually makes it, but before that it was rare) I found my groove pretty quickly with two LOs, and as DD2 grew and her routine changed I just had to make a few minor adjustments to make it work for us. It honestly was often more challenging on the days when DH did make it home in time because then it would throw off my whole system, lol. If your H is usually home just doesn't do the "heavy lifting" so to speak, give him the easier tasks of occupying one while you feed one or put one to bed. Or discuss with him now that once baby arrives you will probably need him to do XYZ to help make the evening routine go more smoothly. He may actually love it once he starts. I know my DH used to hate doing bedtime routine, but I realized later on it was just because he rarely had the opportunity so he just didn't feel comfortable with it. He is now the primary bedtime routine doer, and the girls usually get snarky with me if we try to switch it up
How far along are you? How big is baby? 4w2d, baby is the size of a fleur de sel
How many kids do you already have? Ages? 2. DD1 is 5, DD2 is 3.
How are your other kids doing this week? Pretty well. Both are adjusting to our busier back-to-school routine but it seems to be working out. DD1 is in kindergarten and we put her in Fall Skating school prior to the regular season to hopefully get her a little extra practice (I'm not a crazy skating mom, but she will only push with 1 foot for some reason and I know that it is really frustrating her). So skating 3 days a week and both girls start gymnastics next week (only 1 day/week). Its going to be a hectic 2 weeks while Fall School and gymnastics overlap but they seem happier when they get tons of activity.
Rants/Raves? Concerns/Questions? Aside from a nasty start-of-school cold that swept through our house, I'm feeling pretty good physically. But I am a ball of nerves as we wait to hear about DH's job. We were sure this Europe position was no longer a possibility and were ready to move on. And we did, decided to try for a 3rd, succeeded and then found out that he should receive a contract to review by the end of the month. The logistics of all of it is just really messing with my head. I'm a planner, and right now I cannot plan a damn thing. Its driving me berserk.
GTKY: What is something that your friends would consider “so you”? I research EVERYTHING. Baby gear? I know all the specs. Hotels/restaurants/attractions for a vacation? I've checked into them all. My best gf just doesn't even bother looking things up for herself anymore, she just texts me before even attempting
@mcewen3 I’m the same about researching things no matter how big or small it may be. I can’t just purchase something without reading reviews and comparing it to similar products. For baby advice/parenting, I read articles before making a plan. My best friend will also ask me to look up whatever we’re taking about and let her know. Haha We were just talking last night if we should still be giving our 2 year olds whole milk or 2% or what, and she was like I don’t know, research and let me know. 😂

Lol, well if I remember correctly, for brain development whole milk is no longer necessary past 2. But some pediatricians will suggest to stick with it for additional calories if they need them...?
@mcewen3 Oh ok, thanks. I just saw on his 2 year old checkup review sheet that whole milk wasn’t necessary and to give skim milk. No need for extra calories so I guess maybe I should switch to 2% 🤷🏼♀️

We switched once we got the go-ahead. So much easier to just keep one type of milk in the house.
@mcewen3 My husband is weird and doesn’t drink milk, so I usually never do either unless I’m eating something sweet, so I’ll just drink what we have. Might as well switch though. Thanks for the input!
Do any of you have snowsuit recommendations for 12-18 mo? I don't know if I should get a bunting or if I should get something without feet and buy boots too for when DS is walking? Do you prefer overalls and a jacket? What brands do you like? I live somewhere pretty cold so warmth is key! He obviously won't be wearing these in the car seat but we'd love to take him sledding this winter.
@DuchessOfCambridge we live in Alberta, Canada (read: cold and snowy, lol). A walkable snowsuit and boots are nice to have, even if he hasn’t quite reached walking because they can still crawl around in the snow on a milder day. We lucked out with a hand-me-down Burton one piece that we used for the first walking winter with both DDs. After that one I bought Helly Hansen one-pieces during our local store’s spring clearance sale to use the following winter. They are super warm and SO waterproof that the kids can play in the snow a long time without getting a chill. We’ve also always used Sorel snow boots, but my girls are both June babies so they were pretty confident walkers by winter that year (I also had a pair of warm Bogs that weren’t quite as warm as the Sorels but were totally waterproof so super nice for spring snow). I know a lot of people who swear by Stonz boots for pre and early walkers too.
@DuchessOfCambridge I should add, we never used these suits in the car seat either (like you mentioned). I had Patagonia Puffball (or equivalent MEC or The North Face) jackets for the girls for going around town, etc. They fit in the car seat without adjusting the straps at all and once they are mobile it just makes running errands so much faster and more enjoyable that getting in and out of the vehicle in winter simply requires everyone to jump in and out, no bundling, blanket wrapping and running, etc. I definitely invested in winter gear, but I bought what i could used and the stuff I bought new has earned an excellent return selling it secondhand.
@DuchessOfCambridge we live in the Midwest and DD was 1.5 over the winter. We had both overalls/coat and a one piece - like bunting but footless with a zipper down one leg. It was a hand me down from baby Gap. Snow boots were from target or something like that. Honestly I love the one pieces for one reason- diaper changes. The overalls and jacket were a pain for quick undresses and you had to take the jacket and overall jacket off for diaper changes (no snaps on overalls) but that only affected us when we were out - like sledding, less of a big deal when we were just playing in the yard. Both were hand me downs so don’t know if other overalls come with buttons/snaps
I’m going to ask for more advice - DS has been biting me since he got teeth and it’s getting really old. He used to gum me before teeth came in but now he bites, usually my legs. Only me. I get in his face and say OW, give him something he is allowed to bite, and leave the room for about five min even if he is crying. It’s not getting better. Anyone else dealt with this? It’s been 2+ months, I’m sick of being bitten!
@DuchessOfCambridge sorry, i don't have any advice on the biting. I think you're doing all the right things by being clear that it hurts and walking out of the room. Does he think it's funny when you say ow?
Maybe he does it because he likes it when you say ow. Next time, I would try ignoring him completely. I know my daughter would bite me while nursing because she thought it was funny when i screamed.
@DuchessOfCambridge we were in the same boat. And for us nothing we did after the fact really worked, the key for us was trying to prevent. Then they almost forget about. It can be hard but try to stop him before such as if his head is near your leg - pull him back and firmly say “I’m not going to let you bite me” then distract with something else. You may have to repeat a couple times until the urge goes away or they give into the distraction. Eventually after a week or so of preventing it really helped (also not every time I could prevent that’s ok. sounds like what your doing after the fact is the right thing)
