NER again: advice re:bedrooms

since you ladies are so levelheaded and give good advice.... so you can picture the setup: we live in a small old house on a corner lot. we are on a fairly busy street. we have 2 "true" bedrooms and two other rooms. -one bedroom on the back of the house over the cellar, so the windows are second story. -the other is on the front corner of the house, with one set of windows ground level on the busy street and another window a little higher on a smaller street. currently guest room. -the third room, the nursery, is small, has 7 foot ceilings, no closet, and the laundry closet. -the fouth is dh's office and is part of the detached garage. right now, dd is in the nursery and we use the bigger back bedroom. we're started to think about marlee's "big girl" room and hoping we'll have a baby to put in the nursery soon. i don't think i like the idea of putting kids in the front bedroom. the ground level windows freak me out. but it's smaller, and would be a very tight squeeze for our furniture. we'd also have to repaint both bedrooms if we make the switch. am i over-reacting about the front bedroom? would you put your kids in it? any alternative suggestions given our interesting layout?

  • DS is in our front bedroom, but we're not on a busy street,, and crime in our area is pretty low, and for that reason, not a huge concern of mine.  Would the noise be a problem?  I'd probably be a little concerned about the windows, since it is busier, but if your area is pretty safe, and you have locks on them, I would probably go ahead and have DC in there.  I can understand it being a difficult decision!

  • I don't think you should worry too much about the ground floor thing... Think of all the ranch houses!  If you are concerned you could put safety bars on the windows...

  • Hmm, I can see how that would be a tough decision. I'd agree with the others that it sort of depends on crime level in the area - if it's a pretty safe, friendly neighborhood the only concern I'd have with a front window would be noise. But you could probably put up some thick curtains to help reduce that.
  • It sounds like our houses are laid out pretty similarly.  We currently have a guest bedroom downstairs, front side of the house, near an entrance, nursery and our bedroom upstairs.   If we are still in this house if/when we have #2 we are going to move our room to the guest room downstairs.  We're also on a busy street and the ground level + close proximity to the entrance + distance from our room upstairs makes me uncomfortable.  I don't think I'd sleep well at night with Sabine down there.  If there were another bedroom closer downstairs, maybe, but not when we're separated by a floor.  I'd rather have her upstairs and us downstairs if we're to be that far apart.
