Re: Weekly randoms 8/13

  • Sooo does anyone have any thoughts on/experience with language immersion in daycare or preschool? A ton of the centers nearby have language immersion programs (mostly spanish, and a few mandarin). And I live in a neighborhood with a big spanish-speaking population so most of the home daycare options would be mostly in spanish. I think it's a great idea in theory but I'm wondering how people keep up with it once their kids are out of the program.  For spanish I think it would be a fun incentive for me to pick it back up again, and there are a few public schools in boston with dual language programs. But if we did the Mandarin option I just have no clue how we would prevent the kiddo from completely losing it after preschool.

  • I think I posted in MBF that I broke a molar that had an old root canal on it. This morning, it fell out. The oral surgeon wouldn't see me without approval from my OB, they finally got it and now they can't see me until the 27th. FFS.

  • @kaf1788 I worked in a Spanish immersion preschool in Pittsburgh, and I thought it was really cool. Kids were in it from infant to 5. I don't know how many were able to keep it when they went to school, but it was a wealthy neighborhood, so I assume parents could have kept up with some kind of lessons if they wanted to. The kids definitely learned to speak Spanish there! It was the only language we used with them. Sadly, I've pretty much completely lost my ability to speak it.

  • Of course right as I get back my energy & desire to walk, the air quality is classified as dangerous and I have to stay inside. Send some rain to Southern Oregon & California please
  • @kianarain I'm an Oregonian too! I saw you mention that in another thread somewhere but forgot to say something! The sun has looked crazy lately but the air has been awful.  My H said he could see the smoke in the street light last night when he was watering.
  • @kianarain yikes! I hope things get better soon.

@ladystout08 that seems so ridiculous considering you’re kind of having a dental emergency!

Took DD (13 months) to the library for the first time today. I got my library card and then we sat in the children’s section and I read her board books for like half an hour. She loves books and always comes up to me at home with books and says ‘mommy read’ so I thought it would be a good way to get out of the house for a bit. She defintiely enjoyed it but I had to keep her in her stroller so she didn’t wreck the place! Haha.

My genius self decided towalk there when it’s 90+ degrees outside. But overall it felt good to get some excercise and sweat out all of the crap I’ve been eating.

  • @BitterBetty12 my DD loves the library too.  We are there all the time getting new books.  Around here a lot of the libraries have great play areas so it's a nice place to go to get out of the house! :)
  • @kns1988 @BitterBetty12 I think it was half the tooth. Since I'd had root canals, I think it was the back half and the front half might still be there but I can't really tell for sure. I do know there's a giant gap there. Luckily, it doesn't hurt b/c it's been dead a while I assume. F-ing Army and their crap dentists.

So I finally got a good look in and it was the back half of my tooth. The front is still there. So idk if they'll want to extract that or put a cap on it or what.

  • @Jackiemxoxo I LOVE it. My DD1 would flip out over that wall. That seriously took some time and effort. Props to you guys.

@sweetyjenj I wish I could love it twice! Congrats!

@Mandamay1414 whooo hooooo that must feel awesome. I can't wait to feel that relief soon.
  • Surfacing for air. DD came down with a fever Sat - Mon, stayed really fussy and whiney Tues, then Wed morning woke up with blisters in her mouth and on her tongue. She has HFM. Apparently pregnant people catch it because I have it too. Luckily I only have one sore in my mouth and one on my hand. Still. Just. Ugh.
  • @luckymay2x Oh, that sucks. I hope you both feel better soon.
  • Frustrated with DD, she has been going through a phase, I hope it is a phase, where she has her hands in her mouth all the time. We hand wash a ton but she’s two...of course now she has a cold and her last cold was a month ago and I got it too. Planning to ask the doctor about it but has anyone else gone through this? Advice to help her keep her hands out of her mouth?
  • @UnbreakableKimmySchmidt my BFF really struggled with this with her son, and they gave him a chewy that clipped to his shirt. It was a recommendation from an occupational therapist.

  • @luckymay2x I am so sorry! Get as much rest as you can.
  • @drabong88 If you think he could keep the secret, I don't see the harm in letting him find out. I mentioned here before that with DD, I wanted to wait until the baby was born to find out. DH was very insistent that he wanted to find out. I think, like you said, it was his way of being able to make a connection with the baby. Once we found out, I remember him talking to the baby and about the pregnancy more than he did prior. It wasn't a hill I was willing to die on, so we found out. This time, I can't imagine not knowing since we found out with the first but I also see the appeal in waiting. Like you, this is our second and last so I could understand waiting ( I just don't have the will power) lol

No advice. DS started sucking his thumb a month ago. It's impossible to get him to stop.

  • Happy Thursday :)
@mandamay1414 I bet that felt SO GOOD!!!! I have soooo much in student loans (another house payment) and I can't wait until it's paid off. Chances are it'll be about 10-15 years, but we're trying to get it paid down faster if we can.

  • Good luck to everyone dealing with student loans.  It's such a brutal slog to pay them down.  One thing that really helped me make progress was refinancing with a private lender. My interest rates were terrible (6.8-8.5%), and with refinancing I got them under 5%.  It isn't for everyone because you lose out on things like income based repayment, but for me it really helped me dig into the principal rather than burning money on interest. Plus, it was so refreshing dealing with a professional and competent lender (SoFi) rather than Fed Loan's constant screw ups.

  • @AshVA we talk a lot about this at my house. The balance on mine have more than doubled in 6 years because of interest and being in Income Based Repayment plans (as the payment would be more than $2k if it wasn't). We have considered refinancing, but again would lose the benefit of having it be Income Based... we also want to believe that the forgiveness program will still be there in 14 more years (more info: if you are in an income based plan, or a few other different plans, if you make payments for 20 years the remainder of the balance will be forgiven... but you have to pay a tax penalty on that amount). It's a stressor for sure.

That's really interesting, @tosh24! I'm all about finding extra ways to make money. We did AirBnb this summer and made $4,000 in 3 months. Do you think you could host international students if your house only has 1 bathroom? If you went away for a weekend, would you just provide dinners for them to heat up?

Before we had the money to renovate our second bathroom it was unusable, so we just had the one bathroom for everyone to share. Not really an issue with the boys we hosted, but the girls did monopolize it sometimes. Once we renovated the second bathroom, we moved our family into that one and the students then had their own. I didn't really care if they ruined the main bathroom because we renovated that one as well from top to bottom once we stopped hosting. Yes, if you go away for the weekend (or won't be home for dinner one night) you have to make sure there are dinners in the fridge for them to heat up.

  • @luckymay2x Sorry HFM is going around your family! We had it in May and it is definitely the worst. DD looked like she had the plague, but thankfully wasn't too lethargic. i got it too, but it was much more mild awith just a few sores on my hands and feet.
  • hmmmm definitely an interesting suggestion @tosh24! We have a fully finished basement with a full bathroom that we could host people in. We also have a rental house that we rent for additional income. Both of us have great careers and incomes, it's just an insane amount of a loan (I took it out for grad school... no undergrad loans, and neither of us have other school loans. If only I could take it back...)
