@spartan4life she’s doing great! She’s an amazing mom which is no surprise. She loooves babies and says there’s absolutely nothing that compares to having your own!
@sliztee my productivity has dropped so much. It's incredibly hard to focus with all the side conversations and I keep talking to my coworkers because they are all 2-5 ft away from me lol.
We are moving to open concept during my leave. Although there will be a quiet room for anyone who wants to work in silence. I think it will be quite popular...
At the nail place where I went last, comfortable silence seemed to be the norm, and it was so nice. The manager asked if I was pregnant and said she wasn't going to make me a mimosa, and my tech asked if I wanted my nails cut short, and that was about all the talking. They brought in little metal tubs (with plastic liners) for your feet instead of having the permanent foot tubs, so it seemed super clean. Also it was bright and airy and didn't smell at all. I don't normally get regular pedis (just special occasions or beach vacations), but my toenails grew like actual weeds even before prenatal vitamins, so I was like...yep, I'm done shopping around. Rebooking at the introvert express nail salon for 3 weeks, thanks.
Our move went relatively well on Thursday. We found out the night before they didn't oil our hardwood floors and would be doing so the day of our move but we couldn't walk on them for 12 hrs. Umm kind of hard to do! So we had to tell them not to oil the main floor so we could put all our stuff there. This meant we had to then move it all again Friday morning for them to oil the main floor. It was a bit annoying but our contractor hired two helpers to assist DH while I supervised. Then the water was turned on wednesday and they found two leaks they had to fix. So we have some drywall damage to be repaired. At least we are in and I can start unpacking and organizing. We went to our friends cottage for the long weekend to relax before all the unpacking has to happen. I fell asleep at 8pm while two kids, four adults all we're getting talking around me. I was wiped!

@chyvie So glad the move went well overall, can’t wait to see pictures!
I don’t understand why the open concept of workspaces has become so popular. It seems the majority of people do not like it. Our hospital has started doing that with some of the large corporate departments. Fortunately, I haven’t moved to that building (yet) and still have my own office space. I work closely on a lot of confidential stuff with our contracting department who has moved to that new building and it is very frustrating to have phone conversations with them now because the lady I generally work with tries to wisper on the phone. There are private areas but my understanding is you have to rent them out and they are not available very often because people always have them rented.
The number one reason of open concept is access to natural light for everyone. Lower panels bring more light. Then it fosters more collaboration between teams and departments. Thirdly it costs less because you can have smaller workstations with lower panels. The higher panels require larger station so you don't feel like you are in a small box.
Yes most people get distracted and the noise can be annoying but the pros out weigh the cons so most people adapt

I love the natural light in our office now. I'm next to a window, where it used to be that only offices had windows. I've seen a HUGE decrease in my headaches since we moved
We also have a large open concept office. It was a big transition from my own office in Albany which had 3 beautiful tall windows, but I actually like this better. It’s much more social and collaborative. My old office was too quiet and isolated.

This is why we are doing it, so that it doesn’t feel as hierarchical. We can also cut our square footage and rent expense in half (we are a nonprofit).
I was recently reading an article saying that open concept was doing the opposite of what it was meant for. People wear headphones so they can block out the noise (true, everyone used to wear them). They start using the IM system rather than just talking, stuff like that. I think there was something about not being as productive because they don't take breaks and fee like people are looking over their shoulder? Can't remember.
@hellopartyof5 yes to everything you said. Everyone wears headphones because it helps you focus and drown out everyone else. My computer screens are visible to half the floor, including everyone in the elevator banks. It's weird. I feel like I can't take a 2 minute break because everyone can see I'm on my phone instead of working.
In my last department, I was told not to wear headphones because it kept me from participating in/ being aware of the conversations around me. The result was that I spent less time at my desk, and more time in the little phone offices or completely unused common areas because that was the only way I could concentrate on a document for more than 3 minutes at a time.
I am starting to dread the when are you due question. Whenever I say October people give me a weird look (you know, the wow, didn’t expect it to be that far away look) and then half the time say something stupid to go along with it. Just leave me and my giant belly alone.
@purplegoldfish2 DH’s lovely aunt (for real, she’s normally delightful) made me want to punch her in the face last night for that very thing. Family BBQ, and everyone kept asking my due date, telling me they were sure it was September, and then Aunt told me “maybe it’s because you’ve already had babies, but you look like you’re ready to pop!’ Yes. Thank you. I’m the size of a freaking whale.
@chopchop25 Yup. Some dumb 90lb 22yo I used to work with. I had to walk away because I was at a loss for word and pregnant ladies shouldn’t punch people in restaurants
People say the weirdest shit to pregnant ladies! My mother in law had made a comment about how I should stop eating and starve my baby to death a month ago. At dinner last week she looks at me and says, "at least you'll lose a bunch of weight now that you have gestational diabetes because you can't eat any fun food" then she suggests we all go out for ice cream after dinner.
I dislike the woman very much, she says stupid shit all the time, she thinks she's funny or helpful, she's really just clueless. I've learned to brush it off for the most part.
@jynjer91 I think pregnant people should totally be able to punch others in restaurants! Or anywhere, especially after getting unwanted advice/comments. @jweber4747 I'm glad you're able to brush it off! That's crazy!! Why is everyone so concerned with a pregnant ladies weight gain or if she'll be able to lose it?!
DS starts day care tomorrow for the first time. He’ll be there 3 full days a week. I’m looking forward to having time to nap and work on stuff around the house, but I’m also struggling with the idea of my baby growing up and going to “school”, and not being with me 24/7. Fighting back tears off and on all day.
I got A BUNCH of "OMG you're all baby" and the like today...it's a good thing I'm not super self conscious about it, but I guess people view being "skinny" & pregnant as a compliment? After a while, I do have to start reminding myself that I am measuring on track, and everything looks good, and baby is growing just fine, because I start freaking out that I haven't eaten enough, etc. It's silly, but I almost kind of wish I had a bigger bump because I feel like other people at their showers are showing more. I guess you just can't win!
I told my H not to tell his parents about me having gestational diabetes, because I don't need them watching everything I eat or commenting on stuff. His mom actually has diabetes, but she's like the worst diabetic, never eats right. So I just didn't want any judgement or comments.
On the other side of it, since they're Egyptian, they think that weight gain is great and that you're well fed. So to them, the more the better. When I lost like 10 lbs for the wedding, they were SO worried about me like I was dying or something. I really just have to take everything they say with a grain of salt.

We have an open concept and I actually really like it. However, my team interacts a lot. We have a lot of spaces you can go to if you need quiet.
