@ashtuesday we have a portable white noise machine that he sleeps with where ever he is. It seems to work a little bit, but he doesnt sleep as long when he isnt at home. I think the lighting is an issue too, and smells maybe? Like it's very dim in his room and ours because of the curtains but at my moms is super bright so he wont sleep.
I'm terrified to take him to either of our parents houses for an overnight stay because I feel like he would sleep more poorly than he does at home.
@ashtuesday this is probably bad advice but when we were at my mom's for a couple weeks, we just broke all the rules. We held her until she slept, let her sleep in our arms, etc. We also brought her bassinet - we use the gracco bassinet/portable crib. and she slept in our room at mom's like at home. But Vinny doesn't sleep much during the day, so I can't help much there. Maybe you have to keep trying so LO gets used to your parents' place?
Thank you, @sgrn18 and @fatstagnation! The white noise machine is a great idea - it is one of the few things that calms her down completely when we're at home, I don't know why I didn't think of taking it on the road! And I hear you about just doing what you have to do. In addition to her wakeful-when-out-ness, N's also got a good dose of stranger danger kicking in. We visited my ILs this weekend and I just did whatever I could to keep her from being in hysterics all day!
Are your LO’s in their own rooms? We still have Maeve in our room in a bassinet but my family suggested she may do better in her own room and being in her crib which obviously has more space. I like her next to me but know I should transition soon. She sleeps through the night with a last bottle between 10 and 11 then wakes up for the day at 6 or 7am.
@shoretobe N is in our room, but in her full crib. She has her own room right across the hall, but I can't bring myself to move her into it! And she is 100% good to go - she sleeps from 8:30 PM to 6:30 AM - but I'm not ready. We're telling ourselves we'll move her at the end of August.
I've thought about moving him to his room and he is definitely outgrowing his bassinet by my bed. I'm just not ready to have him away from me, and he does still wake up about 2-3 times a night. He takes naps in his crib that's enough for now lol
Vinny is in her own room at night. DH put here there one night and it works just fine. The way out house is, I hear her naturally (not sure how to say it) at the same time I hear her in the monitor, but I still keep the monitor by the bed just in case. It does pick up some of her small sounds... She has been sleeping until 6 AM for a week or so now, with some random days where she is up several times for no discernible reason. *shrug*
Been in own room since 10 Weeks. Been sleeping through night for past 3-4 weeks (19 weeks old) but past two nights waking up so starting sleep training. Our ped said once a baby starts sleeping through the night they are waking due to sleep cycles, not hunger.
Nate has been in his own room for a few weeks now (he's 16 weeks today). He only wakes once to feed and we get much more sleep because he is so loud when he sleeps. When he was in our room he'd wake at least 4 times a night. We also use a white noise machine and I diffuse lavender
He’s now in the pack and play next to me. He just cut 2 teeth and back to waking up multiple times of the night, but often waking for the day in the 3 o’clock hour. He’ll stay with me for quite a while as his room is all the way down the hall and since we were team green we didn’t set up a nursery yet. I sleep better with him close by.
We are also setting up the pack and play in our room. It takes up a lot of space in our tiny bedroom, but it'll give him some more room to roll around in.
I’ll regret this later because now I bring tnup it’ll happen tonight...but we’re approaching 5 months in a week and we have yet to have the 4 month sleep regression. Anyone with older kids experience this? My first definitely had it at 4 months...every night I go to bed thinking “okay this is it” to prepare myself. I’m sure it’s comingggg
Vinny is sleeping pretty good but we are only a week into month 4. Most nights she wakes once in the middle of the night - anywhere from 2am to the 4 o'clock hour. Then she's up between 6 &7 and wants to be up for good. Some nights she doesn't wake in the middle just goes strait through, but those are random occurrences. I'm also holding my breath waiting for the regression.
@shoretobe I am sure every baby is different, but mine was a great sleeper and she stopped sleeping through the night- would wake up crying without falling back asleep quickly. How you handle it depends on how you want to sleep train. Lots of debate around this, I used crying it out method.
@shoretobe we are going through it now. He has never been a great sleeper but went from waking up 1 to 2 times to 4 or 5 times a night. He wakes up screaming like I've just cut his toes off, and it takes a diaper change and nursing to get him to calm down before he falls back asleep. Sometime he wakes up crying and falls back asleep by himself a few mins.
We haven't started sleep training yet, mainly because I just cant seem to find a method that I like. Probably just going to wing it lol
I knew I shouldn't have said anything as I was typing that. Last night was hell, probably because of the shots, but all night I was like Why did I say that on the message board, why? :P
We also haven't decided on a sleep training method. It's pretty much -let her fall asleep in our arms- around here, which I know. everyone says we'll regret later. we'll see.
Thanks everyone. We’re a few days Into month 4 and I’m just waiting for the regression. She’s always been a great sleeper so I wasn’t sure exactly what to be looking for. @sgrn18 - we wing it too. I just am taking it night by night since it depends on how stimulated she is during the day. Thanks again, everyone.
We're not ready to sleep train yet either. But LO is pretty reasonable at night (so far) - wakes up maybe once, twice at the most. Goes to sleep quickly after he's nursed a bit. I figure the extra nursing helps my supply for now. When we're ready to sleep train we'll probably do the Ferber Method (we used it for my daughter, and for me it seems the most simple and I definitely need some sort of method to follow so I don't go back and forth with what to do).
Yup, spoke too soon. She woke up around 3 crying intensely. I waited 15 mins then went and consoled her. Nursed her and she ate a bit then laid her back down. I really don’t mind waking up once knowing we used to do every 2-3 hours in the newborn phase!
Last night was better (he woke up 3 times instead of 5) but I think it helped that he took a 2.5 hr nap yesterday afternoon. He rarely takes longer than an hour for naps.
So the past two nights I've woken up to find LO on his stomach after I placed him on his back. Can I leave him since he knows how to roll over to his back? Or do I fix him and probably wake him up in the process?
He rolls over from front to back pretty well during tummy time but idk how well he does it when tired
Haven't been on here in forever....my pp has been the hardest 5 months of my life. BUT, started sleep training last night and I finally feel about 10% like a person. Thank God for small favors....
@sgrn18, you just keep placing them on their backs to go to sleep, but let them roll if they roll. Of course at that point you wouldn't have their arms swaddled. On the plus side, our pediatrician mentioned how the risk of SIDs lowers once they begin rolling over.
Charlie is 5 and a 1/2 months. He goes down about 8-8:30ish and sleeps to 1-4 A.M. before waking up. Then it’s every hour or so for the rest of the night (4-5 A.M. he’s up for the day).
Does your night go like this?
How many hours is your LO sleeping now?
Im growing more exhausted everyday because going to bed with him is not an option with 2 other kids and a house to run and milk to pump.
Sorry @mmom3 sounds like you’re not getting much rest at all. That’s exhausting. How is your LO napping during the day? I’ve seen on this board and noticed with Maeve that the better kiddos nap during the day the better they sleep at night. Also, when does he eat? We give Maeve her last bottle around 10 pm (and sometimes have to wake her for it, but she’s still on formula only) then she sleeps from 10:30/11:00p until between 6/7am. Hoping you get a good rest soon.
We have good days and not so good days. For the most part, I let Vinny sleep when she's ready and don't "enforce" a schedule. That said, I do put pj's on and start quiet time around 8pm. She's usually in bed anywhere from 8:30 to 9:30, rarely 10pm. Most nights she sleeps until 4am, when we do a bottle and diaper change. Then she's up again around 6 or 7 and that's the start of the day. She naps around 9:30 or 10 ish for no more than an hour. ~ 3 hours later she takes another nap, again 30-45 minutes. Then she'll take another really short nap at 6 ish. She pretty much always falls asleep with a bottle in her mouth, but what am I gonna do, wake her up to put her down groggy?
Those are the really good days. It's pretty normal for her to wake at midnight or 1am, and then still at 4 and 6ish.
I found that she's really sensitive to temperature. So even though it's 80 degrees in her room, I still put on footie pj's. She sleeps cold and she wakes up a lot more if she's only in a onsie. And somehow that 20 minute dinner time nap is important. If she misses it, she'll go to bed earlier and then definitely wakes up before 1 and then the whole night is off.
Once I got her daytime naps figured out things got a lot easier. I read that baby should be awake 2-3 hours and then will be ready for a nap.
My little guy sleeps hot and sleeps in a onesie. once my big kids go to bed around 9:30-10 right now- he goes to sleep. He will drink a bottle and conk out. Then he wakes up around 4 and I get him a bottle and he goes right back to sleep until 9ish. Then wakes up for an hour then sleeps for 45 min to an hour. Then around 1-2 he takes a 2-3hour nap and another around 6 for 45 minutes.
We have a similar issue. I started a bedtime routine a while back and finally got it to where he is asleep at 8 or 830 and it has worked really well. However, he sleeps from about 8 to 1am and then sometimes he is up every hour until 7am. He HATES being wet, so I change him probably 4+ times a night. He is also pretty sensitive to temperature so we keep the ceiling fan off or on low, and keep him in a footie PJ. I haven't tried any sleep training yet, but started reading up on methods a few weeks ago and figuring out which things I want to incorporate. It's a mess over here lol.
ETA we get about 3 naps a day, at 9am for about an hour, at noonish for another hour, and at 4 for about 30 to 45 mins. The past two days we got a really good 2.5 hour nap for the second nap.
We co-sleep,so while there are no actual get ups she does wake to nurse every hour or two. She usually wakes up around 7 and talks to herself. This wakes me up and we get up for the day. She is then up a few hours and takes a morning nap. It can range from a hour to two hours. Then she is up and naps again in the afternoon for the same length of time. She is then up for a couple hour to then take another predinner nap. This one is shorter, like she needs a power nap before nursing to bed. She then goes to sleep around 7:30. She sleeps about four hours before we nurse all night long.
LO sleeps about 7pm to 7am. Wakes up typically once or twice a night (11pm-ish, and 4am-ish). I'm still nursing him to sleep for now. His naps are ehhh. Some days (most days) it's just 30 minute naps. A long nap for him is an hour (hour and a half on a glorious day), which happens every now and then. He's usually ready for a nap after about 3 hours of being awake. My first wasn't a big napper either sadly (good night sleeper though). Those 30 minute naps are brutal sometimes (not enough time to get anything done really).
I read around this age they 'should' sleep about 14 hours total a day.
Nate sleeps from 6/6:30ish to 6am. We wake up at the same time every morning and nurse. Then at 7 I feed him cereal and some food we're exploring. At 8 he takes a nap until 9:30. I never let him nap longer than 2 hours because that will effect his night time sleep. At 9:30 he gets up, nurses at 10, eats cereal and food at 11 and naps at 12 until 2. At 2 he nurses, he eats food at 3, and takes a catnap at 4. Then we do our bath/reading routine at 5 or 5:30 depending on if he took that catnap. When we are finished reading I put him in his sleep sack in just a diaper (he sleeps hot), lay him in his crib, turn the white noise on, and see him again at 6 am! It took a couple weeks for this routine to set for him but he's been sleeping through the night for about a month.
My daughter just went back to school so we will be adjusting because his morning/afternoon naps are affected by school drop off/pick up. When he gets up at 4-5:15ish he will nurse them fall back to sleep until 7ish. He typically took a 30 minute morning nap, 2 hour afternoon nap, and a 30 minute evening nap. I don’t think he sleeps 14 hours, maybe 10-12 total.
We are down by 7 and she’s up around 630 and sleeps through the night. She stirs around 5/530 but I ignore her and she takes in that last hour. Daycare naps are hit and miss but on the weekends we get two long stretches of naps and some shorter catnaps. We’ll see how this changes once teeth come in.
@slr1229 Maeve got a tooth through on Thursday then a second on Friday and took much longer naps than usual (the extra cuddles may have helped with the napping though) - hoping it’s similar for you and she stays a good sleeper when the teeth start breaking through. @mccurleya sounds like you’ve got a great routine going. That is awesome! @DDRRT1982 I love that your LO needs a power nap - just sounds like a cute thing to do/need.
We start the bedtime routine around 7p, usually sleep by 7:45. Then he sleeps until 3 or 4a when I feed him. He wakes up babbling around 6a but I try to keep him in the crib until 7a. Unless he starts crying then I get him out. He's at 3 naps a day, usually no more than an hour after being up for 2.5 with the eat/play/sleep schedule. But I feel like soon that midday nap is going to get cut out as it keeps getting shorter and shorter.
