Re: Sleep Support Thread

  • I haven't been on here in forever and hope it's ok to jump in... I've given up fb for now so dont have our March group to turn to at the moment but we are majorly struggling with sleep over here. He is 6.5 months now and I'm lucky if he does a 4 hour stretch at night these days. On top of that hes been so grouchy during the day and not wanting to nap unless we are out and about or I'm holding him. So frustrating!!! I guess I dont need any advice just a place to vent. I know we have another week or so of leap 5 and I'm desperately hoping for some improvement then. We tried ferber method CIO a few times but he didnt respond very well... any other sleep training methods working for anyone these days??

  • @scoogy19 I don’t have any methods - my attempts are more “does this work? no? Ok let’s try this now”. when I put her in her crib I use sleep sack overnight and for her early nap before last bottle I wrap her lower half in a blanket (like a half swaddle with arms free). She also has to be holding something - she hugs her mini blabla dolls (they’re the rattles). She still takes some time to fall asleep but it seems to be working ok with the half swaddle and holding something.
What about a weighted sleep sack? The magic Merlin suit worked wonders for Maeve - helped her learn to sleep from 10p-6a.
Sorry - I hope after the leap sleep stretches longer.
  • I agree about shore to be about something to hold. Declan has started wanting to hold my hand on his chest, a toy, or a blanket when he sleeps for a nap or just to go to sleep for the night.

  • @shoretobe I do have a Merlin sleep suit that I haven't tried although he has been sleeping on his belly lately so that ship may have sailed. I'll have to consider a lovey... I know lots of people do it at this age but it makes me nervous! He does have a binky but isn't as attached to it as my first was. Maybe I'll try a lovey for a nap first to see if it makes a difference. We aren't using a sleep sack or anything anymore, just jammies. I would consider a sleep sack though if needed. We have two zippadeezips I can pull out to try again also.
  • This is what I let Maeve cuddle with. I’m not as fearful of it as I am of the lovies because she will put it up to her face but the blabla rolls off.
  • Charlie also has to sleep holding a lovie now as well.  He likes it up by his face.  I think it’s comforting like when he’s nursing my shirt and he hold onto it.
  • That’s a sweet photo @shoretobe
  • Add Nora to team lovey.  Because one of us has been home with her since birth, my husband and I have gotten in the bad habit of letting her nap in her swing holding Raffe (where we watch her or pop in constantly throughout her naps).  Both of those parties are going to stop when she goes to day care, and I'm scared of the monster we've created!  She goes to sleep in her crib without Raffe no problem at night, but Raffe is especially comforting to her during the day.  We'll see how it goes!
  • Does anyone else's LO sleep on their tummy? Nate isn't happy until he flips himself over to sleep. It's terrifying. I know he can breathe but I'm still worried!
  • @mccurleya our LO sleeps on his stomach or side. He will not sleep on his back, at least, not for long. It makes me nervous too and I've gone in multiple times to make sure his nose is not shoved into the bed.  He has gotten really good at rolling over now so I'm assuming it's a losing battle wanting him to sleep on his back now.
  • @sgrn18 Nate is face planted but I can see his back moving up and down so I know he's breathing. But the being face planted is what scares me most
  • I hate the belly sleeping! If freaks me out and he flips as soon as we lay him down.

  • Vinny rolls in the air as I'm putting her down! She sleeps on her side mostly. No lovies though. She's just not into them.

  • Mine naps on tummy, but overnight she sleeps on side/back.
  • After a rough few weeks waking up 5+times a night with crap naps. I just felt like something needed to change or I was going to have a mental breakdown.  So we started sleep training. I had been doing research on different methods but none were really what I wanted to do.  A friend recommended a book called The Sleepeasy Solution.  It's like the Ferber method except you check on them in intervals of 5, 10, and 15 mins until they settle.  I'll tell you, I was skeptical at best.  The books said I should see results within 5 days and I just didnt believe it. Plus, I didnt want to do CIO, I just felt so guilty about it.

Not going to lie, the first night I was a mess. I dont like him crying when I know I can make it stop. But he cried for 30 mins and slept for 6 hours. I woke him up to feed him at 230 and he slept until 6am.   The second night he took only 16 minutes to fall asleep and didn't even cry, just laid there talking to himself. Last night it took about 10 mins. He woke up 2 or 3 times but fell back asleep himself within a few minutes.  I feel like a new person after getting some real sleep! Consequently,  LO wakes up so much happier and seems actually rested. His naps are starting to settle out although I think he is trying to cut out that third nap.
  • Yay for sleep, @sgrn18! It’s great LO is able to put himself back to sleep when he woke up. Those few nights of trying must have been so tough - but so happy for you and that you’re waking up to a happy rested baby
  • Yay @sgrn18!!!  It sounds like you put a lot of effort into finding a method that would work for you, and I'm so glad you and LO are benefiting already.  Enjoy those well-deserved ZZZZ's!
  • Yay for happiness and sleep!
  • My babe goes to sleep between 8:30-9. Wakes up at 3am for milk then sleeps till about 6am. I change his diaper, feed, he plays and back to sleep for about 45-60 mins, so anywhere between 7-9am depending on length of feed and play. He naps about 20-60 mins again around 10:30. Then again around 1pm, and then 4pm. He eats oat and prune cereal in the am, and at around 7pm. Some veggie and or fruit puree during breakfast, lunch, and dinner...but not too much, he still wants more bm over solids. No teeth yet, but drooling and has gum pain.
  • What does everyone’s LO sleep in at night?
We put Maeve in footie pajamas and a sleep sack - but I’m wondering if she still needs the sleep sack? I guess it’s her “blanket” - just curious what other mommas are doing.
  • @shoretobe We put N in the exact same thing!
  • Declan sleeps in a onesie but he is a hot sleeper. If I put him in much more than that he is a sweaty mess and doesn’t sleep well. Soon we may have to add pants and change to long sleeves when the weather gets colder.

  • We do a long sleeved onesie and pants or a footted sleeper.  I was tempted to do a sleep sack too but this kid moves a lot in his sleep and I was afraid he'd just get mad.  I'm not sure what we're going to do when it gets cold though.
  • Charlie just started wearing a short sleeve onesie, footed cotton jammies, and a cotton sleep sack.  He gets cold like his Mama and he wakes up reallly upset.

for us it totally depends on the temp (we don't have ac). She sleeps cold. Most nights she sleeps in footie pjs. if it's over 85 she sleeps in a onsie. If it's below 78 she sleeps in onsie and pjs. If below 70 onsie and fleece pjs.
If I think I've dressed her right but the temp has dropped I put a sleep sack over whatever she's already got on and worry for the rest of the night.

Edit - when can they have blankets?!?

  • Thanks everyone. Makes sense that it depends on the temperature. Just wasn’t sure about not using the sleep sack. Maeve still rolls over in hers then we go roll her back since she hasn’t figured out how to go from her belly to back.
  • @fatstagnation, they should be at least 12 months before having a regular blanket.
  • @enigmaticjj thanks. It's funny, so many people gave us blankets. She has 1000 blankets! and 2 sleep sacks, which are expensive.

  • @fatstagnation SAME!  I now buy sleep sacks for every pregnant person I know.
  • Haven’t been on in forever, trying to put phone away once home from work.  Little girl is so tired from daycare she is asleep by 630 most nights and sleeps until 630am.  Kills me, wish I had more time with her and big sister...been a hard week and on the verge saying peace out work!
  • @slr1229 this was just discussed in the September randoms.

  • Yeah @slr1229, we're with you. It is the absolute worst, but hopefully things will get better for all of us with time - I keep waiting for N to feel comfortable sleeping more at day care.
  • Maeve still naps well during the day -
this past week though she is refusing to go to sleep at bedtime. She lays in her crib babbling then crying then babbling some more. Maybe it’s her teeth coming in?  The bottom teeth came in almost without us realizing she was teething but the top two are taking their time. I don’t think there’s much more we can do...i’m just venting because I know she’d go right to sleep if we held her but I don’t want to start that bedtime habit. Anyone else having a tough time with sleep because of teeth?
  • @shoretobe yes we definitely are.  The first two were bad but last week his two top teeth popped through and I can see a third bottom tooth coming in.  LO went from SSTN to waking up 3 times now back down to 2 times this week. He goes down fine but he wakes up screaming and I know he hurts so I go and pick him up and cuddle him a bit so he can go back to sleep.  I give him tylenol sometimes but I'm not about to give it every day.   Have you tried any of the soothing/teething tablets? I've been wanting to try them but am still on the fence.
  • @sgrn18 I haven’t tried teething tablets I actually didn’t know that was a thing. I’ll look them up though. Like you - I give Tylenol once in awhile when she seems to be having a really bad night. It makes me feel better in a way to know it’s likely related to teething. Hope your LOs 3rd bottom tooth comes in and he and you can start STTN again.
Parenting is funny. I was worried she was sleeping too much - now I’m worried she’s not getting enough sleep 🙄
  • @shoretobe @sgrn18 Vinny too. She was waking only once, and now it's a few times per night at random times. Her bottom teeth came first and that was awful, her top two just cam this week and I didn't know until the first was there. I think now she's working on another top tooth. At least now she's coordinated enough to get teething toys in her mouth. For the first two I spent hours just holding things in there for her. poor thing.

She hates tylenol so I gave up on it. It did seem to help when I could get it in her. Maybe now that she's tasted a bunch of different foods I'll try again if she's having a really bad day.
    BabyFruit Ticker

  • @fatstagnation Sounds dumb, but have you tried different flavors of Tylenol?  Nora will NOT consume any cherry-flavored medicine, but she's fine with grape. (Which happen to be her mama's exact preferences!)
  • Another idea for medicine is the pacifier that they kind of suck the medicine out of. I forget what it’s called but might be a baby Freda product?
  • oh, DH bought the tylenol. I didn't realize it came in different flavors!
    BabyFruit Ticker

  • Oh goodness, is there such a thing as 9 mo sleep regression?? My sweet angles are refusing to nap and now wake up 4 hours after bedtime.  They just learned to sit up and had a rough week of travel, so routines are kerput, but I am so tired and it is soooooo hard to hear the absolute worst wail imaginable and try and walk away...
