So, they put me on insulin today. I had to go in to the doctor to have her show me how to do it. I was not very good at it and it really hurt. She said it will get better the more I do it and the needle that I will be using will not be as big as the needle in the office. I have to say though that this demo might have done more harm than good. I was hoping to show myself that there is nothing to be nervous about, but as I sit her with a sore side, I know I am going to be nervous for tonight.
@bfpafter4years did you get a pen or a vial? Pen needles come in various sizes and can definitely be a lot smaller. You will also learn the areas that are potentially painful and which areas you won't feel at all. The bummer part is that you can get little bruises, so make sure you alternate sites/sides. I posted in the BF thread about my current ordeal with insulin. I swear, the biggest hassle is just getting the stuff in the amount I need. I hate how the amount changes throughout pregnancy.
@bfpafter4years I'm sorry you're dealing with the transition to insulin. I'm such a baby with needles I'm sure I would've struggled.
I just got the results of my 3 hour test today and it looks like I'll be joining you ladies in the GD club. I meet with the nurse at my OB to learn how to test myself tomorrow and will have to meet with a nutritionist ASAP. This is brand new to me and my first pregnancy, so I'm trying to figure out what this means for me and LO while mourning the loss of my "eat whatever you want you're pregnant" status. On the bright side, I'm glad I have good company in all of this!
@meg1115 I was really nervous about testing but after doing it for 2-3 weeks, it isn't so bad anymore! The worst part is remembering to do it an hour after eating. I won't lie, the diet has been hard but I did recently find no sugar bed that I can have one slice at a time and still keep me in range and I can have popcorn! Eating eggs everyday has been hard! Lol
@bfpafter4years I definitely had eggs for dinner last night because I had no idea what I should eat. I have a feeling they will become a staple for me as well!
@bfpafter4years - I'm sorry that you started the insulin, I definitely know how much it sucks.
I'm so frustrated with my one touch. The battey dies so fast! I was trying to check my reading after dinner today and the battery is completely dead. Oh well. I haven't changed the arount of insulin since I started but most mornings (my fasting reading) i've been about 75-80, maybe that means I can take a little less insulin. I'll just wait for the nurses to check my numbers though & tell me to change it.
So I am happy to report that I have done the insulin shots for two days and they haven't hurt at all! Not going to say I like them or anything but I am starting to feel like they aren't that big of a deal. The only thing is the price, $50 a bottle, yikes! Oh and it still not doing much on my fasting numbers but I am starting on the lowest dose.
@bfpafter4years I’m glad they haven’t hurt, but definitely yikes at that price tag!
Question, if anyone knows - is it normal for blood sugar levels to be higher when you’re sick? Since my cold started on Monday, my numbers have been higher - still within range (other than one, which was the first one since I started tracking), but I eat almost the exact same thing every day (creature of habit...), so I’m wondering if it’s because I’m sick?
@runningyogimama also, just getting less activity in your day in general can make them go up too. So if you laying down a lot throughout the day they could ch o up.
Hi gals, sorry to interrupt the GD board but I just wanted to ask what your doctors considered a failure of the 1 hour test? I had mine yesterday morning and haven't received a call yet (they're in the no news is good news/unless we reach out assume everything is fine camp) but I just looked online and I got a 138. It says normal results are 65-139 so it looks like I just squeaked by. I did not fast (doctor recommend bacon and eggs for breakfast) so I'm sure that increased it a bit.
Hi all, I just received a call back from my OB and I failed the 1-hour glucose test. I was told that based on my numbers, I am going to be skipping the 3-hour test and going right to an Endocrinologist. Below are my numbers:
Gestational diabetes is something that I haven't researched, so I guess I just have a lot of questions. I have my appointment with the Endocrinologist next Tuesday, after my ultrasound appointment.

@serabjorn sorry to find you here, but I have found after the initial shock/feeling bad, it usn't so bad. When you meet with the doctor they will tell you the diet ti be on and how to monitor your sugars. Hopefully, that us all you need. You just have to stay away from things like breads, rice, and potatoes.
If that doesn't work then they have oral medication and insulin. Oh, and just fyi, fasting numbers are the hardest to control!
