I didn’t see a thread specifically for this, and I know some of us are getting to that point where we might be ready to make announcements, so let’s share ideas!

Just some general jumping off/starter questions - feel free to add any other questions or comments you may have as the thread progresses.

Who have you shared with already, and what have you done?

Will you make a social media post, and what ideas/themes have you considered?

Looking forward to to seeing everyone’s ideas, as I’m not the creative one here!

I have shared with immediate family and very close friends only. We did this around 8 weeks, after we heard a heartbeat. All we did was tell them “hey, guess what, she’s pregnant!”

I plan to announce on social media in the next few weeks, not because I’m eager to announce (relatively) early, but because I’m a teacher returning to school after summer break and I don’t want to have to have the conversation a thousand times in the first week. It’s a small school and I’m hoping word will travel quickly and it’ll be old news soon.

Ideas I’ve considered are including DD (she’s 2) and possibly incorporating Valentine’s Day, but all the ones I’ve seen on Pinterest or just general google searching I haven’t particularly liked. Most of them had more to do with the announcement geared toward Valentine’s Day than the baby being born near Valentine’s Day. I also like to do something that hasn’t been overdone already, and sooo many of my friends have done the “promoted to big sister” or “checklist” one where the bottom check box is left blank with “be a big sister - coming soon!”

Can’t wait to see what some of you creative ones are thinking of!

We’ve shared with our parents only, and a couple close friends. Not even my siblings know yet. We only told my parents because we knew they’d figure it out (we were on vacation together for two weeks), and we told my husband’s parents because we felt bad for keeping them in the dark when my parents already knew.

I want to start spreading the word after the NT US in two weeks. I’ll be exactly 12 weeks at that point, and we’re going to a big family reunion (husband’s family) the following weekend, so the timing is perfect.

As for social media, I don’t think I’ll make an announcement. People will find out eventually, especially when pictures of me with a big ol’ belly start popping up. I’m not big on announcements in general, and the people who matter to us will already know anyway because we’ll tell them privately.

Who have you shared with already, and what have you done?
Parents, grandparents, siblings, plus one person each. DH also spilled the beans to two coworkers by accident. The first overheard him on the phone and the second asked him what he was up to and he answered "looking at strollers". Fail.
We did a cute announcement for DHs grandmother because we saw her in person and it was a golden opportunity. Everyone else got a phone call or text.

Will you make a social media post, and what ideas/themes have you considered?
I'm undecided. On the one hand I rarely post anything so it wouldn't be out of the ordinary for me not to. On the other we have family spread out over the globe and it would be nice to tell them all in one go. Also my MIL loves a good FB announcement and if someone is going to do it, I want it to be me.

I'm hoping to be inspired by you all!

We have only shared with our parents and a few close friends who have known about our infertility journey. We told my parents on fathers day since we had plans with them. We showed the the video of us listening to the VM from our clinic with our beta results (we didn't test before hand, so it was a true reaction). My mom cried since this has been a 3 year process for us.

I think we will wait until after the AS to make a large announcement. On one hand, I don't want to make an announcement on FB since I know how hard it is to them when you are struggling. But on the other hand, i have waited three years for this and should get to enjoy it right? We have videoed alot of our journey from the beginning, never imagining it would be this long. We have a youtube channel where we post mostly vacation videos (my husband loves to edit on the side), so I think we will make video announcement, sharing our story and hopefully raising awareness of infertility. The only thing I am not totally certain about is sharing the whole donor egg part of our journey. While most people today understand IVF, donor is a whole different ball game and I am worried about some of the opinions we will get. So we will see

I will definitely share our video with the group when that time comes. Looking foward to seeing what everyone else is doing.

We’ve told our families, close friends and some work people. We tend to tell people early, which really worked to our advantage when I had the SCH bleeding. Last time we didn’t do a crazy social media announcement, but I think we’ll do something with DS for this one after my 8/10 check up to see if the SCH has shrunk. This baby is due a few days before DS’s 2nd birthday, so we may do something about how he’s getting a special birthday present this year. My mom already got him a cute “Big Bro” shirt, so I’ll probably have him wear that.

@JamieH2000 I think you’re amazing. I love the idea of a video and showing people how long the journey can be. Very very cool ❤️

My parents, my IL’s and my SIL & BIL know. After our 10w appt next week, we’ll tell the rest of our family. We’re going on a big family trip in August and it’d be weird if I wasn’t drinking/ riding thrill rides. We’ll tell them with the caveat that we aren’t telling our kids and hope they won’t tell theirs until we’re out of the first tri.

That being said, this is the plan for our social media announcement. My oldest loves to read to her brother so it’s perfect for us.

Asssuming all goes well at our NT Scan, we will announce on social very soon! Here are my first two announcements on social media. The onesie has our baby’s hashtag is on it. For number 3, it is the same onesie hanging in our garden with my girls. It will say “Ready to Harvest February 2019” (I’ll post the pics after the scan, I’m superstitious and PGAL anxiety is scaring me tonight) like @kayjay44 the dog made an important appearance.

@bourbonbiscuits- aww thanks girl! That is so kind. Let's hope I am brave enough to go thru sharing everything pubically, because in general, we are relatively private people. There isn't much I can do to help other women struggling except let them know they aren't alone and raise awareness.

@okayestmom12 and @thepax89- wow those are really great! Such an exciting thing to share and what a fun way!

We've shared with immediate family, but are waiting a few more weeks for anything else.
For our first we were way cuter bc we told them at holidays. This time we just had DD in a big sister shirt and waited for them to figure it out.
When we post on social we will probably have DD in a big sister shirt and a little sister or brother shirt next to her depending.

We told my immediate family last night and my in-laws this morning. On a box of donuts, I put a sign that said “if I’m going to get fat, so will you!” with a picture of an US and my due date.

For close friends, will probably tell them in person? For extended family, I will probably just let my parents take care of that.

My dad was so cute. He was so excited. He said the 2 guys he works with both are becoming grandpas soon, and he was feeling “left out” when they were talking yesterday. He’s going straight into work to tell them today!!

Oh! I totally forgot one of our announcements, since we gave it weeks ago. But it's probably my favorite:

My older sister has special needs, which causes her speech to be hard for other people to understand. She loves to socialize and is very extroverted. I knew she'd want to share the news that she's becoming an aunt with the people she works with and at her church, but would have a difficult time getting them to understand her since those aren't frequent words that she uses.
So I bought her a necklace from Etsy that has a silver ant pendant, which she can use as a visual aid (she also enjoys funny plays on words like ant/aunt!). She's been wearing it every day since.

@hannahbananas11 ohhh man you’ve got me crying. My sister has a developmental disability. We told her right after I took the test and she got SO EXCITED. She has already told everyone she knows that it’s a girl and that we’re naming it after her (as in her First Middle Last JR.). Not entirely true, but I’ll let her run with it until we know if it’s a boy or a girl. She did tell us that DS was a boy right when we found out I was pregnant (and that we were naming him Bruce which was ... incorrect) so who knows. On her prayer list by her bedside it says “my pregnant sister and her new baby and my nephew and his new baby and my brother (my husband) and his new baby”

@BourbonBiscuits That's so sweet! I love her (very exhaustive) prayer list! And that she basically went full steam ahead on choosing names. LOL
I know a lot of people with special needs, and I think that they are just so genuine and real in their joy and excitement. It's the best thing to witness.

My SIL has a developmental disability too - she started crying when DH told her she was so excited! She loves being an aunt.

This was my announcement last time, at around 30 weeks

I was so worried about jinxing things I held out until everyone who talks to me or my mom on a regular basis already knew. Might announce it a little sooner this time around.

We’re pretty private so I doubt we’ll do any big social media post but are now getting more open about telling people.

The one we’re having a tough time with is a couple friend of ours really struggling with IF. We haven’t seen them in quite some time and they have a transfer scheduled for early Aug. I want to get together with them soon and tell them before they find out through the grapevine but I’m really anxious about upsetting them since it’s been a painful (physically and emotionally) process for them. Am I making more of it than necessary?

@megpants209- that is really kind of you for considering their feelings! There is no right answer since everyone handles the news differently. When I was struggling I made it known to a few friends that I preferred to find out via text bc I needed to process and respond when I was ready. In person was always the worst, especially when you aren’t expecting it. Not sure if you have a friend with both of you that could feel out the situation. But just being so thoughtful already, I’m sure you will find a good way.

Been thinking about when I make a Facebook announcement. I want to use the opportunity to share my experience with infertility. I've been jealous of pregnancy announcements in the past and I want anyone else out there to know that I get it and they're not alone. Not looking forward to any pity parties, small talk, or comments from the peanut gallery (i.e. ILs) but I guess that's part of the deal.

Still not sure when to share with Facebook or work, and still not sure how in depth I want to go on my platform.

@notthecheat this is my first pregnancy that has made it to the point of a public announcement, so I've not yet personally announced a pregnancy and mentioned struggles with infertility. However, an aquaintance did that when she announced her pregnancy, and that happened the week of my miscarriage. It was incredibly comforting to know that someone else has miscarriages (she'd had four in two years) and yet still was able to have a pregnancy with a happy ending. I think her post brought me more comfort than anything else anyone said, and she had no clue that I had struggled (again, we're just casual acquaintances from college).
Her post had a picture of their ultrasound, and said something along the lines of "After four miscarriages in two years, hope has become difficult for us to hold onto. But we're hopeful for this little one, who will be joining us in a few months."

@notthecheat i had a friend who announced by sharing her journey and at the end sharing that she was pregnant. This isn’t 100% the same, but for my second daughter, I posted her normal pregnancy announcement and wrote, “we can’t wait to meet our rainbow baby in January 2017”
you can integrate a “worth our x months/years of prayers”

@notthecheat We had a onsie made that said "hand picked for earth by my siblings in heaven". We didnt use this as our original announcement, but shared it often durring our pregnancy.

@LuLiLaEv, that's my approach to it too, I don't think I want to make a social media announcement. Although the adorable ones in here are kiiind of making me maybe change my mind!

For everyone sharing their infertility and loss struggles on social media, you're doing so much good. I'm lucky enough to have only had one CP and I got pregnant with this one just a few months later, but when I went through my CP it helped me so much to know how common it is. Most of that knowledge came from friends and acquaintances who had been open about their struggles on Facebook. I was brand new to TTC and knew nothing. You can read and research online till your brain explodes, but no matter how many clinical studies tell you how common MC's are, hearing real experiences from people you know and listening to how they got through it is way more comforting when you're going through it yourself.

@notthecheat we had a few recurrent losses and decided that when dd2 was announced I would post about the journey to having her. I actually had a few friends reach out to me afterwords saying they never knew and were also going through a loss. There's nothing like knowing you're not alone.

@LuLiLaEv we told people about dd1, but did not tell them about when she was born. She was born just shy of a month early and actually was born at 9:27 am the morning of my baby shower. I had her at a birth center and she was in perfect health at 7lbs 3oz so I was able to get home in time for my baby shower. I should've had my mom record everyone's responses when I opened the door with my baby that I had 5 hours ago.
