@knitknitread Cool, that's what I figured. I mean honestly. Lol I just looked, and it turns out the little silver star sleeper I had in mind is actually 6 mos. :s Doh!
I do have a lovely nb onesie that was intended for an announcement photo, we didn't use, so maybe that, plus pink or blue pants, and the "just in case" headband will be the way to go... I do feel relieved somehow just knowing the plan is to keep it simple. ;)
Incidentally, I just told DH what I was up to, and his response was, why do they even need clothes to come home in? Don't you just swaddle them? I explained they've got to get strapped into carseat for the ride home. To which he replied that carseats are stupid. :D
I'm going to chalk that one up to someone cranky and not super-awake yet lol
Our special “going home outfit” is a sleeper! I actually have one in newborn and one in 0-3 months I’m bringing to the hospital. And a matching hat, burp cloth, and blanket. It’s all black-and-white, but the sleepers have little unicorns on them. It’s all from Hannah Anderson, so the fabric is a really soft high quality cotton.
@BusinessWife Dd’s coming home outfit was a simple snap up fleecey one piece sleep n play thing. It was special because dh and I picked it out together. (Actually, I thought it was completely random but he picked it and was adorable).
It’s in a shadowbox now with her hospital bracelet, hat and birth announcement. ...she actually continued wearing it for the 6 months took for her to outgrow newborn size before I put it away!
This round, I’m hoping dh and dd and I can pick somethingnout together.
I really recommend if the weather is right one piece suits, it took me days to be comfortable slipping a onsie over her head, plus the onsie rubbed on her belly button.

@BusinessWife My mom is adamant about buying our baby her going home outfit. I am perfectly fine with it and maybe I should be making a bigger deal about what she wears when she goes home, but I figure as long as it is cute, I am fine with it. My mom bought two options, both are footed "sleepers". One is a Jessica Simpson that has lots of ruffles, some gold, frills, etc. The other has a cat theme and has some sort of cat details in the feet and on the bum. They both snap as I didn't really want something that I had to put over her head for the first time as the anxious wreck I am. Who knows, maybe in a month I will change my mind? Here is the Jessica Simpson one https://www.buybuybaby.com/1/1/281159-newborn-girl-one-piece-outfits-span-jessica-simpson-size-0-3m-ruffle-footie-peach.html
We didn't bother with a special going home outfit. I just picked a sleep 'n play that I liked and brought it in both NB and 0-3M. My kid went home in the NB size so I was glad I brought it.
Almost all of DS's clothes have come from Carters. For some reason I just like to buy DS's stuff new so I wait for sales and coupons then stock up for the season. It has all held up pretty well and is ready to be washed and reworn by DS2.

@BusinessWife With our second we bought a girl and a boy outfit from Carters (as we were team green) and just returned the boy outfit so I definitely think your baby could come home in a gendered outfit. You could also say, like we do, yes, we know we're just not sharing (though we have shared with a FEW people - a few close friends and family is pretty much it).

This is what we did and will do again. Also for any Team Green ladies, Carter’s has a great return policy (90 days to get full price back), so I went ahead and picked up some girly basics in NB size and some headbands because I couldn’t help myself. If this is another boy we will just return all of it besides his special going home outfit I picked.
Also +1 to sleepers as outfits! Although our Septembers tend to run pretty warm, so that might not be feasible right away. I actually didn’t pick up any more in girl style because we have so many neutral ones from DS. And screw snaps. Zippers for lyfe.
Oh for going home this time, I bought DS a Big Brother t-shirt and DS2 a Little Brother onesie/pant set from Target to use in my FB announcement photo. I plan to bring those to the hospital for going home day. I only bought the outfit in NB size so hopefully this one fits NB like DS did.

It's just on Amazon I see, but I also notice that <i>one pair </i>of baby pants costs 4x the price of the Carters ones. Does anyone have any experience with them? Or want to weigh in on if it's worth the price?
@BusinessWife The booties are supposed to be awesome, but they're so expensive!

@BusinessWife - I had no idea they made clothes, but the Zutano booties are the best!! I bought multiple pairs for DS so I could have some at home and some at daycare. They seem to be holdings up great and have been saved for DS2.

We had one pair of zutano leggings. I'd recommend going straight to their website. Sometimes you can get deals on Amazon, but I generally feel it's more expensive than their own site. Overall, I liked the leggings, but felt they ran a little short for my long skinny baby. If this baby is differentially proportioned, I'd buy again.
@BusinessWife it was hot here when my first was born so he came home in a slightly too big onsie, pair of socks and some mittens so he didn't scratch his face. It'll be hotter when this one is born so he'll wear the same thing. Possibly the actual exact same thing if I can find all the pieces.
Because different brands will fit differently, I think it's super hard to say that no, your baby won't need newborn sized clothes or whatever. We have a potential going-home outfit that's a newborn size from DD1 that barely fit her - she was 8 lb 4 oz, 20.5". We have other newborn sized stuff that fit her for at least a month.
Also, regarding sizing, *most* brands that use a single #, like "3 months," mean that that number is the upper range compared to brands that use a range like "0-3 months." It took me a while of comparing tags and stuff to figure that one out last time! So 9 month clothing is the same size as 6-9 month, at least in theory. But brand to brand things can run small or large in that range, obviously.
This LO's going home outfit is going to be a footed sleeper or a kimono/wrap onesie and pants. I lean heavily towards comfy and easy for new squishy babies.
Also, FOOTED PANTS are amazing. I think we had some that came in a set from Carter's last time, and I'm planning to get some of these this time: https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FV6XX2E. We had a few pieces from this brand and they were nice. Footed pants solve the dilemma of how to keep baby shoes or socks on. I've also sewn some, but IDK if I'll get around to that before LO is here. I also love the Zutano booties. We just buy one pair in the current size and use them constantly. And DD1s are still OK to pass down to DD2.

Has anyone found the sizing to not always make sense? With the regular brands (carters, etc) it seems standard. But I receive some onesies as gifts, super cute but random brands from amazon. They say 3-6month but they’re like, enormous compared with the Carter’s 3-6. I got a 0-3 as a gift that looks like the 3-6 from carters. I know it’s not a big deal but it’s making it hard to organize haha.
@ashh2018 yup. They can be all over the crazy place. It's super annoying. A lot of the time you end up just looking at your baby then looking at the clothes and then guessing. Side rant, I hate the clothing sizing based on age. Just label it like men's clothing and do it by weight or length or something.
@ashh2018 sizing often makes no sense! Its the reason we never used clothing for DD and it got passed down with tags still on. I organized by size and of course when I changed out the sizes, the smaller fitting stuff didn’t fit. Grrrrr! Lost out on some cute items. Carters is awesome since they give the lbs and inches.
With the sizing, my solution was to keep the next size out that way when baby started growing out of the current size, I would go through the drawer and they would end up wearing some of the smaller pieces of the next size. Also, when I boxed them, basically, if they wore it 0-3 then no matter what the tag says it goes in the 0-3 box.

@treeofcheem we hated the footed pants! DD was really tall though, so they simply never fit. I have them all out for this one, though, hoping she’s not as tall and skinny so the footed pants will fit! I’d love to not have to deal with socks.
@MandyMost Good point! DD1 has always been in the upper percentiles across the board, so even though she was tall, her weight corresponded well. Did you have trouble with footed sleepers and stuff like that, too? I'm curious if the different styles accommodate better or worse.
And @stothi, brands that use European sizing just do it by height usually. But then it's in CM and you might have to figure out what that is in inches (unless you're good with cm). And if you're sorting before your LO is born, and you grouped all the "gender neutral" clothing into the same box, you have no idea what size that H&M outfit should go with.... Not speaking from personal experience or anything. But I agree, it's such a better way to size things, especially since every baby grows differently.
Also, I know sleepwear was mentioned earlier, but since DD1 was around a year or so (maybe a little later?), we've always had to go up a full size in sleepwear. Not just because it can be tight; it runs smaller/shorter. Disney stuff has been even worse, we sometimes go up two full sizes so the length in the arms and legs is still OK after a couple wears and washes. Maybe it shrinks more than other stuff, maybe they use different drafting blocks for sleepwear? IDK what it is, but it's been a consistent issue for us for quite a while now.

@treeofcheem I feel like the Disney stuff is all over the map as far as size goes. Someone got DS the cutest little onesie/overall set from there and he outgrew the onesie before he fit into the overalls. I was very sad about that one.
@Wishilivedinflorida. I was so happy to receive a couple packs of koala kids kimono tops at my shower! Not that I know the brand at all... you like/d them?
On my day off we went to Once Upon a Child and were totally overwhelmed with selection. We already have a variety of clothing in sizes up to 9 mo.-mostly under 6, but are lacking in nb size onesies, various sizes pants, sleepers and jackets. Ftm and only child.......i know buying too many many of a certain size can be foolhardy especially the smallest...but my family has ran small as a child and adult 4-6lb babies. So the goal was to get those needed items but...perhaps we should have made a list bc once we got there I was
Lost. Got ocd at the 10 for $10 onesie bin. Sorted through 200 of those til dh gave me the look.. iT's mentally straining to not truly know what u will need and how many of each, while you don't want to have too many, nor not enough and have to make trips out for essentials during the first few weeks when it could have been prepurchased and have on hand already... good Lord lol.
@BusinessWife Sorry just saw the tag! I loved the Koala Kids brand. They were more true to size and more durable than Carter’s IMO. And they had a lot less of those cutesy phrases and more cute prints/classic pieces and their dress clothes were awesome. Sigh.
Re: Product Spotlight 7/14: Children's Clothes
So really, whatever they go home in doesn't need to be a special outfit.
ETA- I'm planning on using a sleeper or a onesie/pants combo again this time.

I'm getting a little cheesier this time. I bought this for DD: https://www.primary.com/shop/kids/rainbow-shop/the-stripe-t-shirt-dress?color=double-rainbow-navy&size=2 (because she's our rainbow baby), and then I bought this for new baby: https://www.primary.com/shop/all/the-zip-footie?color=sunshine&size=0-3 because after every rainbow comes a little bit of sunshine. This will also likely be used for a FB post introducing LO if I can get a cute photo of everyone in their outfits before someone soils their clothing.
