I was off this week and got to finish up a book I started nearly a month ago– Exit West by Moshin Hamid - 3 out of 5. I liked it, but it was average to me. AND I started and finished (!!) Someone You Love is Gone by Gurjinder Basran - 4/5; great quick read
FFC - My Goodreads goal for the year is to read six books. That last one put me at five!
I finished Slouching Toward Bethlehem during my long OB wait on Tuesday, and it was fine. Took me forever to actually get through though.
Currently one chapter into Gulliver’s Travels. I brought it and A Passage to India for trip reading, because they’re on my Read Harder list for the year, they’re paperback, and we had them in our library. I ordered Smilla’s Sense of Snow for an appropriate read through Scandinavia but it arrives tomorrow, and we’re already in Newark.

I just started QB VII, which is the last of the nine Leon Uris books on my shelf that I have yet to read. I'm making it my mission to finally go get a library card this week so I can have something after I finish this one.
I finished Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, which took me longer to get through than I expected. I enjoyed it -- 4/5 stars. I also finished Happiest Baby on the Block. Omg that was an excruciating read. I think the basic idea is fine, but the writing was just awful and it was so drawn out. The entire thing could have been summed up in 5 pages. I also reread (or actually listened to this time) Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I thought that was a good book when I read it back in college, which may have partially been because I was crushing on this guy and it was his one of his favorites. This time it was nearly intolerable.
I just picked up two used books to read on vacation in two weeks -- Labyrinth by Kate Mosse and one other that I can't remember the name of. Hopefully they are good beach reads! Normally I'd go to the library, but I lost my library card and accidentally didn't pick up five books I put on hold, so I'm too embarrassed to go in there and request a new card right now.
Also finished Bringing Up Bebe last week. It was an enjoyable read and had some really good insights. Could kick myself for not highlighting / taking notes but I guess I have 4-5 more months to go through it again!
@hkom I read Bebe last year before I knew I'd be pregnant now and I definitely think I need to read it again. Same goes for First Bite: How We Learn to Eat by Bee Wilson.
@Jens_Hoes We typically turn the TV off around 830 or 9 and go upstairs and read in bed before going to sleep. We also read while "watching" TV most evenings. BUT, we currently don't have kids, so that's probably gonna change
@Jens_Hoes Since DD (11/2016), I almost exclusively only read before bed. The trouble is, when I get in bed it's because I'm ready to SLEEP! So, a lot of the time I reread the same 1-2 pages over and over until I fall asleep. That's why I made my goal for the year only six books, two months per, haha! Sometimes I'll get into bed an hour early for extra reading time.
The other day, I read in DD's room while DH gave her a bath. It was only 10 or so minutes but it felt good to squeeze something in.
@hkom@kadeephd If you decide to reread, please share your notes!
@runrinserepeat@lexidawg I was called for jury duty on Wednesday and every time I get called, I end up sitting in the waiting room all day and get dismissed at the end without being picked so I'm looking forward to a day of reading. Both The Woman in Cabin 10 and Something in the Water are on my to read lists, now to pick one!
I’ve never heard of First Bite but I’m definitely interested. Especially given that I’m determined that this next kid will love green vegetables. Where did I go wrong??

I just read Behind Closed Doors in 2 days. It was a scary and intense read, but easy and couldn't put it down! There are two others by B.A. Paris that I have on my list, but right now I'm reading Sometimes I Lie. I'm only about 50 pages into it, but it's starting to draw me in.
@kadeephd, I'm a librarian, and trust me, there's no shame in needing a new card! And tons of people request stuff that they never pick up. Your librarians won't judge you for that! Lol
@runrinserepeat as I mentioned, I'm a librarian, and it's embarrassing how few books I've actually read over the past few years! Since having kids, I almost never have time to read at home. Now I read primarily on my hour lunch break, but for a while I was working half days and didn't have time to read at all! Unfortunately, being a librarian doesn't mean I get to sit and read all day. Lol
haha, I don't really have trouble finding time to read. I can't tell if people are confusing me with someone else or trying to give me tips on how to scrape out more time when I'm not knitting? My project is seriously going to take 2 days, LOL.
Oh, I also read the Me Before You series by Jojo Moyes. After you took me a while to get into. I actually put it back after 20 pages or so, but when I saw the third book was out, I decided to try again. It took about 50 pages to get I to it (I think page 52, to be exact, was the page I started feeling like I really wanted to know what was next), but it ended up being pretty good, and Still Me, the final book, I breezed through. I really liked the series as a whole!
@antsangel1118 I used to be a librarian and I totally would judge someone who requested a ton of books and never showed up for them! That's why I'm avoiding requesting a new card for a little while. Though I worked in a private school where getting a loaner book from another library was quite work intensive (it was basically me driving to pick books up...), and I know it's not like that in public library system. Maybe I was also a judgey librarian .
@antsangel1118 Whaaaat... I didn't know it was a series! I read Me Before You before it was made into a movie (which I haven't seen). I'll have to check the others out.
I’m reading Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain for my ladies bookclub. I’m really liking it esp bc I used to work in restaurants back in my 20s and that world is just so different than what most folks experience. This book is not for the faint of heart though—lots of sex, drugs and foul language.
@antsangel1118 I just bought Behind Closed Doors and can't wait to read it! It will have to wait until I'm done reading A Column of Fire, which I'm working on right now and only about 1/3 of the way through. I started reading the Kingsbridge series a few years ago after a friend recommended The Pillars of the Earth. I really liked the first two (simply the fact that I read the entire books at about 1,000 pages each speaks volumes for me, b/c I usually can't get/stay into anything that long), but so far I think this one is actually my favorite. I'll update once I've finished it!
Me: 33, DH: 41 Started IF Feb. 2014 PCOS & MFI (low sperm count and motility) 3 Femara cycles w/natural intercourse over summer 2014, BFN 1 Clomid cycle w/natural intercourse Nov. 2014, BFN IUI March 2015, BFN IUI June 2015, BFN IUI Oct. 2015, BFN IVF Oct. 2016, fresh transfer, 2 day-3 embryos, BFN; nothing to freeze IVF Nov. 2017, fresh transfer, 2 day-5 blasts, BFP; ectopic; 1 blast frozen FET March 2018, 1 day-5 blast, BFP!
@kadeephd that's funny! We can be judgy sometimes, but there are way more stupid things people do to be judged for than not picking up a few holds. In our system (countywide, and no big deal to get books from one library to another) it's not uncommon for several holds for one person to go unclaimed. We do special holds for our patrons by getting materials from outside our county or even state, and THOSE we judge hardcore if the patron doesn't pick them up! That's a service that costs us money, but costs our patrons nothing! @hoosiermama-2 yes! You need to read them! But don't bother with the movie, IMO. The book was so much better than the movie. It took me ages to finally get through the movie. I kept falling asleep. @mag1cbeli3ver it's SO good! Scary, in a psychological thriller kind of way, and disturbing to imagine the events happening in real life, but I know it happens.
I'm "reading" (via Audible) Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhoob by Trevor Noah. I really recommend the Audible version. Trevor Noah's narration is excellent and really brings the book to life!
Okay so after reading The Wheel of Time series for the past half a year, it has started giving me weird dreams. I am on the last book now, yey!
For those who don't know the series, the main character is in love with three women, and of whom also love him, so it's full of "I don't want to share, but I guess I will deal with it" type of thing. Well, I had a dream that DH had another woman and, even though I was very hurt, I was going to let it go. Like WTF brain? I woke up and crawled over my snoogle to snuggle with DH (he was surprised since that dang pillow doesn't really allow for that!).
@ab_canada Ha! You're dreaming about it. I've read up to book 8 or 9 before and I'm currently going back from the beginning to finally get through it. I'm listening to them on tape, so maybe an hour a day while I drive to and from work. (On tape, they are about 40 hours long, so that's like one book a month if I'm lucky. I'm on book 4 now.)
I'm currently reading the Outlander Series on my kindle, and I have the paperback of Ina May's Guide to Childbirth on my bedside table.
@omnommer I'm reading/listening to the Outlander series too. I started them years ago but always got stuck on The Fiery Cross. I'm less than 50 pages from the end though!
@ab_canada have you read the Stormlight Archives series by Brandon Sanderson? So good!
@rocketmom88 Nice! I started book three last night. I really love reading books before watching their shows, and my sister says the Outlander TV series is pretty good.
And for all the Wheel of Time fans... I saw an article last month that says Amazon is looking to turn it into a TV series.
I just started “The President is Missing”, I originally thought it was non-fiction (just hearing about it here and there)...it’s actually fiction. It’s good so far but there are short chapters and I’m only about 60 pages (out of 500) on Kindle. Anyone else read it?
I'm still (very slowly) reading Winter is Coming, which is about Vladimir Putin's rise to power, why he's so dangerous, etc. Seems uh, very appropriate reading today! Perhaps the news will motivate me to get through another chapter before bed.
@hoosiermama-2 that’s the one. Writing credit is for Clinton and James Patterson. My guess on reading it is it was predominately James Patterson with insight on presidential workings by Clinton.
@katy0990 I read The Couple Next Door this past spring and thought it was great! If you like books like that I highly recommend The Sister by Louise Jensen and I Let You Go by Clare Mackintosh.
Last night I finished Another Brooklyn (YA) by Jacqueline Woodson. I give it 2.5/5. It ended soon after I finally started to get interested in it. And there was something (many things) that I didn't like about the writing style. I'm interested in reading another one of Woodson's books to see if I like it better.
