  • Talk to me about hyperemesis. My sister has HG with her current pregnancy and she had it with her last one. She's also an extremely melodramatic person, so I'm having trouble finding my sensitive side because I'm so skeptical about how awful it really is. She keeps going to the ER and they give her fluids. Is it really that bad? I want to yell at her to just eat and she'll feel better.

I had HG with my first 2. I would say I had extreme morning sickness with my 3rd, but not to the point of HG. And I would describe my morning sickness with this pregnancy as moderate morning sickness. I’m the opposite of a melodramatic person; I’ve always been super tough. I hate feeling numb, so I won’t let the dentist numb me. I walked on a broken foot for 3 days until I literally couldn’t walk without falling over (I didn’t find out it was broken until I broke down and went into the doctor on day 3.)
I do not complain easily and generally am one to tough it out.

That said, HG is horrible. I was throwing up 12+ times a day throughout the entire first trimester. And then 2-5 times a day the rest of the pregnancy. I had to keep a Tupperware bowl with a sealing lid in my car so I could puke and then seal the lid, because I could not make it through a car ride without puking. My throat hurt all the time from puking so frequently. My life had to revolve around making sure I cas close to somewhere I could puke, and avoiding anything that smelled like anything because any smells made me puke.

However, I had a melodramatic friend who thought she might have HG, too. Her symptoms? She was “nauseous everyday, and a few times a week it gets bad enough that I actually throw up.” THAT is not HG. That is normal morning sickness.

So in guess it depends; does she actually have HG? Because if so, yes, it really is super horrible. Or is she calling normal morning sickness HG because she’s melodramatic?

A close friend of mine, who isn't the melodramatic sort at all, had HG with her second. She was hospitalized several times because she couldn't even keep water down. She was probably about 135-140 lbs when she got pregnant, and she lost almost 20 lbs in her first 16 weeks from being sick all the time.

  • @wkuandrea I gained 10lbs the first tri with my first daughter, then nothing the second tri, then 20lbs the third tri lol and this time it's looking the same. I've gained 8lbs in 13 weeks, and I anticipate it balancing out in the end. I eat healthy, I'm not eating much more at all than I used to eat, and I exercise. Your body will do what it's going to do, there's not much you can do except focus on being healthy, not focusing on the weight.

  • @wkuandrea Check this out! This made me feel so much better last time. Even with gaining 10lbs in first tri, I gained only 30 overall. I started at a low-average BMI, so I don't know if that makes a difference. Also, I read that while pregnant, your body can store extra fat in preparation for needing it to breastfeed. You burn fat and cals like crazy when you're breastfeeding, if you plan to.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends gaining 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy—but why? Here’s a pound-by-pound breakdown of how that weight is distributed across your body.

    1.5 pounds: the placenta

7 pounds: maternal stores of fat, protein, and other nutrients

7.5 pounds: your average full-term baby

2 pounds: breast tissue (we know it feels like so much more!)

    4 pounds: increased fluid volume

    4 pounds: increased blood volume

    2 pounds: the uterus

    2 pounds: amniotic fluid

    Total = 30 pounds

  • @libertymomrn, @AshVA, thank you! I do think it's real HG and she does lose a ridiculous amount of weight during pregnancy (20+ pounds already). I'll give her the benefit of the doubt and try to stop judging. It's hard with all of the sibling history.

  • ugh DD is sick with a stomach bug.. been cleaning up puke all day, and it's a miracle that I haven't tossed my cookies doing that lovely job. Poor girl hasn't been able to eat or drink much today:( I really hope it's only a 24 hr thing and that I don't get it. I'm also really sad that we've been stuck inside on a beautiful day (not raining, not 95 degrees).
  • Tomorrow is my last day staying with my parents at their cabin. I brought DD out here while DH stayed home - he didn't have enough vacation time to come out this week and also for the planned trip to attend his grand parents' 50th wedding anniversary. So... Here we are. So far it's been a pretty good trip. The best thing by far is that my parents are letting me sleep in every morning and dealing with my super early riser kid. Heaven! Downside - all I want to eat is flakey breakfast biscuits and they don't have any and nothing else sounds remotely appetizing. Ive been both starving and full of food aversions all week. I even tried to explain what I wanted and they thought I just wanted Pillsbury rolls. NOT THE SAME. Lol.
  • @luckymay2x That's so nice you've been able to sleep in some. Sorry you couldn't get your hands on any flakey biscuits, though. It's funny how pregnancy and food aversions can make us so specific in our choices about food and textures.

@Mandamay1414 Hope your LO starts feeling better! Stomach bugs are the worst.
  • @drabong88 my mom got that for DD. It was one of my favorite outfits for her! I just had to pack it up today because she’s outgrown all of her 12 month clothes  :'(
