Re: Weekly Appointments 7/2

  • @dexnie The pediatrician we spoke with last week said places like CVS and Walgreens will likely get the shot in mid to late August. I'm due the 3rd so I'll be looking out for the signs.
  • I’m waiting for my four hour GD class to start. Then I have a midwife appt Thursday morning.
  • Glocuse and reg ob appt tomorrow. We’re trying to get together with friends beforehand so that the visit has a clear end time and doesn’t linger all dayy... not sure how that is gonna go.

Regarding the flu shot, dd was a January baby and diagnosed w cf by 10 days old. Fil refused to get a flu shot and avoided seeing dd for the first few months of her life. He never spoke to us about the topic, his mother gave him an awful hard time about it. He hand wrote an odd little story book and mailed it to dd in leu of visiting? We would have let him visit, as long as he was coming from home (not straight from one of his teen event things).  we were more concerned with people who would be around a ton. As it turned out, no one dared visit or help, so it ended up not being an issue except w fil because we didn’t know that was why he wasn’t coming around.

  • @arcticseal-2 oh no! Rest up and feel better!
  • This may not be the appropriate thread for this, but since we discussed flu shot and TDaP, anyone else not overly concerned with the flu shot? It's not going to prevent colds/germs, flu season is barely started, and definitely not peaked in September, and idk, maybe I need to be more concerned, but even with a Febubaby I felt safer saying "If you've been around sick people or you, yourself, are feeling sick, please let us know when you're feeling better and we'll reschedule."

    How far along:  27+6
Reason for appointment:  28 week appoinment, ultrasound and glucose test
Concerns / How did it go:  all is good! Passed the glucose test, have a mild mild iron deficiency and baby is growing on track (very average!). I have decided I prefer the lemon lime glucola to the orange.
Questions:  not now but I’m sure I’ll have them later lol. We are on every two weeks now

Flu season won’t peak in Sept but our babies won’t be eligible to be vaccinated until March at the earliest. As someone who’s due the first week of Sept (and measuring ahead each week), I may not be able to get the flu vaccine if I go early. With a 5-20% chance of contracting the flu depending on the year (and the knowledge that, historically, 80% of children who die from the flu are unvaccinated), we will be following CDC and ACOG vaccination recommendations to the letter.
  • @dexnie What I'm doing for me is different than what I require of visitors. I personally will be getting a flu vaccine as soon as it's available to try to pass on whatever I can, understanding that I personally may need to get vaccinated again since having a flu vaccine be ineffective in February/March is not my idea of a good time. I was just a little shocked (?? probably too strong of a word) by how many were requiring visitors to get flu vaccines in like...August (since it'd be 2 weeks before the vaccine is even effective against the flu, which if you're going to require it, why not require it be effective before seeing your LO) which would, again, leave those visitors exposed in February/March, right when flu season peaks. Idk, it's awkward timing, no doubt, and there will be some exposure no matter what, but I was just curious if I was alone in my thoughts or if others were in the same boat.
  • @Patience7150 I agree with you too. As I've mentioned before since I work in healthcare I'm required to get a flu shot or wear a mask once flu is declared prevalent. I likely will get the vaccine ASAP knowing I might have to get it again since flu in NY hangs around for quite a while. I'd likely also make my H get it shortly after baby is born since he'll be going back to work before me and works with the general population. Other visitors I'm iffy on making them have the flu shot. Typically my parents get it done pretty early and that's who we will see the most of. But, I'm not overly concerned about it ATM.
  • I'm not too worried about the flu shot, personally @Patience7150 @DanyTargaryen  I don't ever get a flu shot, so I don't see myself requiring family to get them.

Tdap tho, yes, if it's not up to date, I have already started to spread the word.  And of course all the common sense, if you're not feeling well or have reason to think you may have been exposed to a sick person, please don't hold / come over to visit the baby.

27+2 and had my glucose test today.......have to go back for the 3 hour as I was about 15 points over the cutoff. Anyone have to do the 3 hour and it come back ok?

Yeah, we're just going to go with the CDC recommendations here, which state that grandparents, caregivers, and friends of the family should be vaccinated (https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/pregnancy/family-caregivers/index.html) and that they should receive the flu vaccine before the flu virus begins spreading in their communities since there isn't enough evidence to delay vaccination (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/keyfacts.htm). There's also no evidence that getting more than one dose of the flu vaccine in a single season benefits adult populations (https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/qa/misconceptions.htm). To clarify, I do agree with your questioning of when "flu season" visitor restrictions should actually begin (September? October?), which was what sparked my original post; it's not clear to me from the CDC website.
  • That’s good that she recommended the TDAP. No one told us and our son got pertussis at 6 months. It was so scary.
  • Thanks @dexnie, I appreciate the info!!

So, I'm more worried about it because both my ILs are teachers and we see them a lot. Realistically, I'm not going to get every single person who visits or interacts with the baby to get a flu shot or tdap booster. But I'd really like for those who will have a lot of contact to go ahead and get their shots, just this one season when he is too young to get his own shot ::shrug::

And of course I'd still have the "if you've been sick, are feeling sick, or have been around sick people then reschedule" rule.

I had to go back for the 3 hour even though my numbers weren't crazy, and that one came back fine! It sucks doing the 3 hour with all the blood draws, but I wouldn't worry about it if you were just 15 over :)
  • The 3 hour comes back fine the majority of the time...the 1-hour is a screening test aimed to catch anyone who MIGHT have it, the 3-hour is a diagnostic test. That being said, my first pregnancy I barely failed the screening test (literally a couple points over) but failed the 3-hour and definitely had GD.
  • 31 weeks, met with a new OB at my appointment yesterday. Didn't have any concerns other than discussing baby's VSD and if I had a follow up with a cardiologist after she's born. I didn't have any questions but she kept asking me if I was having any cramping or BH/contractions. I told her no and she was surprised.. I was confused by that? Is it normal not to have BH at this time?
  • adiratadirat member
@treeofcheem I hope the conversation goes well. It may be awkward, but you do have to educate her in order to get yourself the best possible outcome!

@lpq0309 I agree with @treeofcheem -- I started noticing BH contractions during second tri but my doctor said plenty of people, especially FTM, don't notice them. Pretty normal.

  • Waiting for my 28 week appointment now. Its been an hour since my appointment time. But the practice recently went from two doctors to one so understandable. Had glucose one hour and anemia test a few weeks back so checking on that. He's active and I'm not too worried about anything.
