I do well about avoiding the particular foods during pregnancy, but with my son I had food poisoning in the first tri from Mexican food. You always run a risk of food poisoning no matter what. All these veggie and fruit recalls lately but they aren’t going to tell us to stop eating those!
I had to throw away a pack of sabra hummus that I bought at Sheetz today. Instead of leaving it in the fridge at work for tomorrow, I brought it home and then forgot to take it out of the car. Sad face.
And I have been following the no alcohol and no deli meat rules and limiting caffeine. Those are my only diet changes. I don't like anything undercooked or raw anyway, including steak - has to be well done for me. Although, I did eat steak the other day that was definitely medium. DH grilled it and thought that it was only slightly pink when he took it off the grill. But it was definitely red. I ate it anyway, because I wasn't about to waste a steak. I didn't feel bad about it, and I didn't get sick. I probably could eat deli meat and be fine, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I guess I'll feel guilty if I let myself have some when I completely avoided it with DS.
I eat deli meat all the time. In fact I've had ham every day for the last four days. It's a reputable butcher/deli, I usually heat it up anyway and listeria also comes in crap like vegetables and ice cream so meh.
@galactickates I've just been sticking to the food guidelines that are obvious and/or convenient for me
Avoiding: alcohol, caffeine (except decaf coffee, and I've had black tea maybe 2-3 times during this pregnancy when absolutely needed), weed, overly expired food (I used to be kind of a garbage dump and not believe in expiration dates)
Didn't eat much of anyway so NBD: most deli meat, rare meat, unpasteurized dairy products, sushi
Not worrying about: occasional runny yolks, occasional deli meat (if deli sandwiches are available at a work function, etc)
I've also been trying to eat more organic produce and dairy, or just be mindful of washing conventional produce. That came at the guidance of a few maternity books and my Neurotox professor. Apparently there is some research linking pesticide exposure with increased depression/anxiety and other neurological issues, so figured might as well be more careful now, even if the evidence is iffy. I'm not a stickler about it but I'm just trying to eat organic when it isn't a ton more expensive.
I suppose I should add that I do completely avoid alcohol when pregnant, but I assumed that was a given, lol
definitely assumed everyone is avoiding alcohol. I'm guessing some people probably take sips here and there but that's not what I was asking about. I was more curious about what people were eating, not drinking.
Eta - Thanks for all the responses! It was sort of a census poll. Someone I know is being VERY strict with the guidelines. My Dr told me to make good choices but that i didn't have to cut a bunch of stuff out of my diet. Be sensible, eat healthy. I was just seeing where everyone else fell on the line.
I’m following the food/drink guidelines as much as I can. I quit drinking alcohol in August for personal reasons so I don’t miss that. I switched to decaf back in January and right now coffee smells gross to me so I’m not missing that either.
I’m not eating deli meat or anything with nitrates, nitrites. I’ve never liked runny eggs but I’ve had to research when raw eggs are used in salad dressings/desserts/etc. We eat mostly organic everything so organic eggs aren’t pasteurized (at least none that I’ve found), and must be cooked thru to avoid illnesses. No unpasteurized dairy.
No sushi/sashimi. No medium rare beef but I will eat it medium (I thought medium was OK?). None of the mercury fishes. No artificial sweeteners but I weaned myself off adding sweetener to coffee a couple months ago.
Um, what else? Trying to eat a more balanced diet again now that food doesn’t repulse me. We splurged a bit when the MS was bad and ate processed foods like *gasps* poptarts LOL. I’m trying to wean myself off desserts (as in, making it the exception instead of the rule). I started out this pregnancy in the “overweight” category by about 2-3lbs (based on BMI), so I’d like to *try* to not completely pig out LOL.
Speaking of pigs, I had a dream my husband and I had a pet pig and he was awesome! Now I want a pet pig LOL
I'm not strict with what I'm eating other than trying to eat a balanced diet and not over-indulge (when I can). I usually have steak rare but have been doing medium rare, I cut down coffee to just 1.5 cups, I eat blue cheese dressing, I will eat a sandwich if it sounds good, I don't have sushi often but when I do I get low mercury fish and avoid raw (but seriously, women in Japan probably eat it their whole pregnancy, just don't buy it from a gas station). My doctor said that the risk of listeria can be present in so many things we are encouraged to eat so some of these things are just as "unsafe" as others. A girl from my last BMB got listeria from soft serve ice cream. I just have found that it is easier to eat what sounds good and what is healthy when I'm not so uptight on the restrictions. I was the same way with DD.
I will have a glass of wine here and there but honestly, it's such a tease to me to have five ounces of wine so I typically don't even bother
We had our first appointment yesterday and the nugget was dancing all around the screen. There is a mass on the baby’s abdomen that the dr was mildly worried about. He couldn’t tell what it was and said we will check again in two weeks. So now I get to freak out for the next two weeks. Has anyone experienced this before?
If I eat deli meat, I make a toasted/grilled sandwich out of it so the meat is heated up. I'm trying to be more mindful of what I'm eating.
@emmaaa that's terrible about the girl who got listeria from soft serve. I will admit I ate that once last pregnancy and once this pregnancy.
I'm also careful of tuna fish. Last pregnancy, I had to control the amount of tuna I was eating because it was one of my cravings. This pregnancy I'm not craving it, but it's not on my avoidance list.
I consider myself winning at this pregnancy thing if I avoid alcohol, smoking, and energy drinks. Which I avoid anyway. I haven't had alcohol in 10 years, I've never smoked and I don't drink energy drinks because they are so bad for you (I'm looking at you DH).
I say this because there is a very very pregnant woman that I see in my complex smoking with an energy drink every damn day. I get a little ragey.
@sparkymcgeee, 3.5 years alcohol free for me. I hate seeing pregnant women smoke. I try not to judge people, especially because I try to give them the benefit of the doubt that maybe that was the first time they broke down and had a cigarette during pregnancy, but if you see her doing it everyday then it's definitely judge worthy IMO.

I had to see a MFM during my first pregnancy. There was a pregnant woman smoking RIGHT OUTSIDE THE DOOR, so I had to walk through her smoke to go inside. I hope the doctor ripped her a new one.

Ugh smoking in general I find to be really gross and very rude for people to just smoke right outside public building entrances because now I have to breathe in your cancer-causing chemicals into my lungs.
I’m so thankful my company office buildings are tobacco-free campuses.
Random suggestion: Kind of workout related but helps with pain relief. Sciatica pain has set in early with me this time around. During prenatal yoga this past week, our instructor gave us each a tennis ball to roll. What you do is place the tennis ball in the spot of the sciatica pain, lean up against the wall and roll the tennis ball against the wall using your body weight. I'm telling you it helps tremendously. I hope I described the action well enough.
Like most other responses I trying to be mindful but not vigilantly strict with my food. In general I am cutting out things I know to be harmful (i.e. alcohol, high mercury fish, beauty products w/certain chemicals, etc) and just limiting or being mindful of things that *could possibly* be harmful if contaminated or eaten in high doses (i.e. runny eggs, unpasteurized cheese, non-organic dirty thirty foods, etc). Admittedly there are "rules" I have ignored all together like I have eaten a bunch of turkey sandwiches with lunch meat. And some "rules" that I already followed to begin with like only one small cup of coffee a day, no smoking, no soda, etc.
On the topic of tobacco free work places, ours is supposed to be but we have a few individuals that dip at work (chewing tobacco) and have spit cups that sit out on their desk or they even take to meetings sometimes. I found it completely disgusting pre-pregnancy and now with my nausea I find it totally intolerable. Why do people think that is remotely appropriate in a workplace setting? It's sent me running to the bathroom to dry heave a time or two already...
I mostly avoid foods I should be avoiding, and totally avoid smoking (I don't smoke, so that's easy) and alcohol. Avoiding alcohol has been way easier than I thought it would be, thankfully. It's like my body knows how bad it would be and doesn't even want it. I don't drink energy drinks, I have only had turkey a few times by forgetting, then a few other times but i warmed it up. I don't like hot dogs.
The hard one for me this time around was cosmetics. I'm not following the guidelines of getting rid of some cosmetics, but I did stop using things with acne medications/chems in it. I can't remember the names of the bad chems, but I know it's not in what I use right now. And I stopped using my face products with retinol or vitamin C.
It BUGS me when people smoke close to doors or hang-out areas. If there's people standing around one area, and you want to smoke, GO AWAY. This was so so so long ago that i worked at Starbucks, but i remember people would go to the drive thru while smoking in their car and it sometimes wafted inside. There was a RULE, though, that we were able to enforce lightly about NOT smoking in drive thru, so that felt good to tell them.
I live in California and it is against the law to smoke within 20 ft. from a businesses doors, people still do it all the time but I'm always surprised to hear that other states don't have the same smoking laws. I'm pretty sure they have made it against the law to smoke in public parks and such too. It's nice not to worry about smokers much. It's so inconsiderate.
Is anyone watching/have watched The Staircase? DH and I finished episode 8 last night, and I couldn't get the images of Kathleen on the stairs out of my head all night.

My random for the day is that H and I decided yesterday to start playing Pokémon go again. Yesterday we went on two hour long walks and this morning I went out with DD in her stroller for an hour and 40 minute walk + park trip. It’s been great to transition me out of my first tri exhaustion / lack of movement. Also we bought a house and moved to a new town in May and it’s given me the opportunity to explore AND made me really happy we chose this town. It’s a super small town but has several parks and a great Main Street and walking trails and a community pool all within a 5-10 minute walking distance of our house. It’s fantastic.

I'm always looking for something new to watch where can I watch The staircase at? Netflix? I haven't heard of it.
*stuck in box*
It's a documentary about a woman who was found dead at the bottom of a stairwell. Her husband is tried for her murder, but he insists that her death was an accident as a result of her falling down the stairs. It is on Netflix.

@galactickates It's hard for me to find the time to listen to MFM but I love it! They are so entertaining. I need to listen to their episode on the staircase.
For anyone watching the staircase, there was a comedy on NBC awhile back, only one season, but it was called trial & error and it was loosely based on this case. I thought it was pretty funny at times. Probably would have enjoyed it more being able to make the connections at the time. I watched it on hulu.
TW (child sickness and vomiting for those who are nauseated or don't like stuff like that lol)
DD woke up last night when we went up to check on her before we went to bed (which she never really wakes up). I picked her up to calm her down and she was burning up and then vomited on me. It was not a large amount but significant enough. Checked her temp and it was 103.3. DH called the emergency nurses line and they told us to keep her hydrated and give Tylenol and Motrin. She kept chugging water but then ended up vomiting pure liquid. We gave her a bath and she calmed down and cooled down. Her temp went down to 100.7 within an hour or so. I wanted her to sleep with us so I could watch her but she would not fall asleep. I finally just let her sleep in her room and she was out. She screamed at me when I woke her up around 1:45am to give her Tylenol. Her temp was 100.3 when she woke up around 7:45. She again chugged water and vomited the liquid back out. The rest of the morning we did small sips every couple of minutes and crackers and she kept it down. Her fever spiked again to 103.7 a little before lunch so I dosed her again and she slept on the couch for her nap. MIL came to be with her because I had to come to work (not only do I not get paid on probation but I also have a huge event fore the Fourth next Wednesday and am so behind). DH got home shortly after and said her temp was hovering around 102 and they just gave her Motrin and she only wants crackers. Apparently my child also hates Pedialyte, Pedialyte pops, and Gaterade. She only wants water but as long as she keeps it down and has wet diapers, then we are good.
Sorry for the novel
TLDR: DD is sick and I am exhausted and hope I don't get it.
