Re: Sleep Support Thread

  • My babe is on 4th day of probiotic. Hoping this helps with colic and gas. He is so fussy and not sleeping well at all. Poor baby. He eats for 5 mins and is so tired he passes out and then wakes up shortly after and looks for food...he just wants to be in my arms I'm convinced.
  • It’s always a struggle getting her back to sleep after her second night feed.  By the time I do it’s 530/6 and DD1 is up at 630.

@slr1229 - I have trouble as well.  Usually an hour and a half later.  I have to get up 5:45 to get started with my day because My DS1 is up 6-6:30 and he’s just a tornado that must be supervised at all times.
  • @BrittnieMariee same here! So tiring but love the hugs lol
  • @nancysimp I loooove snuggles! They don’t last long enough. They grow up too fast lol
  • What weight sleep sack does anyone use with the air conditioner on?
We’re going into that season in the North East and I was looking to get the sleep sacks without the swaddle then realized there’s all different weights and textures. I run hot so I don’t find myself to be a good indicator of how to dress the LO. Just wondering what other moms do. Thanks.  :)
  • mmom3mmom3 member
They make cotton ones I use versus a fleece material I use when we finish swaddling.  I do still dress in footed pj’s as LO tend to get colder more easily then us when the air is on.  We have awhile before we use the air conditioning.  Just a few weeks we ago we had snow!
  • I have a couple Halo Sleepsacks that are a cotton muslin material that will plan on using when we have to AC on. I feel like it’s the perfect weight for the summer months, since I prefer to sleep in the cold.
  • @bexster05 I love making it cold and cuddling with a blanket. Just wasn’t sure what to do for the LO. I ordered the halo Muslin cotton sleep sacks - they have this winter weight one that I was considering but I thought that might be too hot, so I’m glad I went with the Muslin cotton one to start.
Thanks everyone for your input :) much appreciated.

How’s everyone sleep going?  We’re waking roughly once at night now, between 2-4 then after that we begin the every 3 hours for the day.

Our night routine varies.  Sometimes she falls asleep around 7 and is out for the night and sometimes she’s up until 9; I prefer the 9:00 time then she sleeps until 330/4.  I can’t seem to get the evening consistent.
  • @slr1229 my babe goes to sleep between 9 and 10pm. He wakes up at 3 or 4pm....and then 6 or 7am. :)
  • N falls asleep for the night around 9:30 and usually gets up around 4 - sometimes she'll cry for a bottle, and sometimes she'll just happily suck on her hands until she falls back asleep. I know it's a self-soothing thing (yay!) and not a hunger thing because she does it fairly often, even after eating to her belly's content. The thp-thp-thp sound of her sucking her hands - especially when she does it for up to half an hour in the middle of the night - may drive my husband and I insane though!

Charlie nurses usually around 8ish and is down around 8:3/9.  He will sleep to somewhere between 2-5 A.M. - typically waking around 4 A.M. Then he will start his every 3-4 hour daily routine.
  • Jeffrey usually falls asleep between 8 and 9pm. He’ll wake to eat between midnight and 1am. He wakes up again around 5am and just wants to be held until he eats at 6. He sleeps pretty good at night however he’s a nosing sleeper which wakes me up often. Lately he’s had to work out gas in the middle of the night and his grunting will wake me. I go back to work in 3 weeks and I hope he quiets done some by then....

I usually put LO down between 9 and 930. He wakes 2 times usually about 1am and 5am. It's hit or miss how long he stays up each time.  Sometimes it's 20 minutes sometimes an hour, either way I have to keep him upright for a while after he eats because of his reflux.  We get up for the day between 8 and 9am.

I would like for him to drop a night feed but we are trying to stop supplementing with formula after the okay from the pediatrician.  So he is hungry much faster now.

This is us exactly!  It's been great!  I hope my going back to work next month doesn't mess with this too much!

When they go down between 9-10, are they waking up from their latest evening feed/nap cycle by then (say last feed was 6) and then you top them off with a feed after they wake up?

Tonight she fell asleep after 530 feed and was still asleep by 830 and I had to wake her up or else she would have made that her long night sleep- I can’t seem to keep her consistent

After the 5:30-6ish feed - my little guy usually is awake until he eats again at 7:30/8ish.  He then nurses from about 45 minutes and is very sleepy.  He’s 10 weeks old and has more awake periods now.
  • Today my babe ate at 5pm, slept for about an hour and then was up from 6-8. 8pm is when his crankiness started per the usual...and so he had a feed, a burp, and a walk around..out by 9pm. Zzz.
  • Tonight Jeffrey ate at 7pm, took a bath and had story time and I placed him in his crib around 8pm. He never sleeps in his crib he sleeps in his bassinet in our bedroom but he starts daycare in a week and a half and I wanted to get him use to falling asleep in there. I put him in the crib tired but awake. He cried for awhile and I went in every 5 minutes to comfort him but didn’t pick him up. It took about 15 minutes but he ended up falling asleep in his crib! I brought him in the bedroom around 9:30 and he slept until midnight. Super proud of my little man
  • Has anyone tried mom's on call? I got tired of waking up every 2 hours still and bought the book. It worked like a charm last night! I'm going to start the day routine today and see how that goes. I'm going to need the night time sleep when I go back to work next week.
  • So I’m still all over the place trying to figure out how to help Cora sleep best. She seems to struggle with mostly silent reflux at night (I’m guessing it’s worse at night because she doesn’t burp as well). If I put her in the bassinet, she’s gagging and coughing on thick spit up within a couple hours. So I’ve tried the rock n play. But she grunts and seems uncomfortable in it and eventually struggles with spit up and choking in that too. During the day she naps in the swing and has zero issues. So I’m wondering if the swing is on a bit more of an incline. I’m considering propping the rock n play up a little more to experiment but I’m already worried about her safety since they say flat on her back is best. And here I am considering propping her even more? Is this too dangerous? She’s right next to my side of the bed but I don’t want to put her at risk.

@stephbrim24 have you tried a crib wedge? I got one and it fits well in the pack n play it's not a huge incline but its helped with my LOs reflux (that and Zantac). He isnt inclined so much that he is scrunching down (which I noticed made him spit up more. I'm not sure why though) but its enough to help with the reflux.

Then again it could just be the Zantac working and I'm giving out terrible advice.

ETA the pediatrician said with the zantac, I would see the most improvement at night and helping sleep longer stretches
  • @StephBrim24 do you keep her upright for 30 minutes after the feeding? I’ve noticed that helps a lot with silent reflux. Recently I’m started sit up with Jeffrey laying on my chest on his tummy and lightly patting his back. I can usually get some more burps out of him that way. Not sure if she’s taking Zantac but I’ve noticed a HUGE improvement with giving the Zantac 30 minutes before the feeding. Doing it right before the feeding can cause breakthrough reflux.
  • @StephBrim24 I have the same question as @bexster05...do you keep her up for 30 mins after a night feed? My little guy is 10 weeks and I see a huge improvement with his silent reflux. I didn't give him zantac because my doctor said it wasn't too bad, his reflux. Instead I made sure to feed, then keep him upright over me on my chest and shoulder like a burping position...rub and pat him to burp even if he burped I kept rubbing his back for about 20-30 mins as he slept upright on me and then I put him in his bassinet. The grunting and spit up etc slowly got a lot better. Now it's pretty much gone.
  • @sgrn18 , @bexster05 , @nancysimp - I don’t have a crib wedge. I was trying the rock n play which gave me a couple nights of improvement but then I noticed she seemed to be choking and gagging there too (wondering if it’s because it squishes her stomach). I had been keeping her upright for quite a while (tons of burping) before and she still struggled a lot. However, I gave in last night and tried the bassinet again after keeping her upright for 30 minutes and she seemed to do better. She still had episodes where  I could hear her choking it down, feeling it coming back up, then it’d choke back down, etc... it’s horrible to listen to and wonder if she’ll need help. She was prescribed Zantac because I told her pediatrician that she wasn’t sleeping long at a time and was grunting and unsettled a lot. She wondered if the restlessness and grunting was because the acid was bothering her. Cora never screams in pain though so I doubted it was hurting her, just chokes and gags her as it keeps coming up and sliding back down. So I tried it two nights and there wasn’t really a difference.
So far keeping her upright for 30 minutes and burping a lot seems to help the most. It’s so hard to stay awake to feed her and then hold her upright for that long. I’m just telling myself it’ll be worth it if it buys me more sleeping time before she spits up again.

My dr told us that the Zantac could take up to a week to start working.  Yeah the keeping upright for 30 mins at night is rough when you're exhausted too, there was a few times where I couldn't even keep myself upright.
  • So I spoke too soon. Massimo was up all night practically. Poor baby. I think his tummy hurt. He had 2 explosive poops this am. I showered him twice. Hopefully today is a good day and he gets some naps and then sleeps well tonight.
  • How’s the sleep going?  14 weeks over here and waking up 1x (between 2-4).  She’s in bed by 730-8pm and wakes up for the day between 6-7.  I can’t ever get her to eat more than once after her 330-4 afternoon feed, she eats at 630 and is too exhausted to get another one in.
  • @slr1229 the nights are going ok. He usually falls asleep around 7:30pm (last feeding is usually at 6:30pm) and wakes once between midnight and 1am for a feeding. I then have to wake him at 5:30am to feed and get him ready for daycare. I’m actually pretty thankful that I get about 7 hours of sleep at night, just not in a row.

Eeh sleep is... distant at this time lol. He almost rolled over in his swaddle last night and it scared me so tonight is the first night sans swaddle.  He has been pretty restless, keeps kicking his legs and moving his arms, really just enjoying his startle reflex too.

Right now he goes to sleep at about 930pm but he sleeps until 9am with multiple wake ups at night.  I'm trying to get him to sleep earlier but if he does go down at 730 he will wake up at 830 and back down at 930.   I started a bedtime routine and I've been starting it at 8 to be in bed and fed by 9.  Once he seems to get the idea of bedtime I'll start pushing it 15 mins earlier until we get to about 730 bedtime. (At least that the plan)

Charlie is getting a bath then nursing around 8.  He will nurse for 45 min-an hour.  Then he’s generally asleep to sometime in the 5 o’clock hour.  How we, he’s getting ready to transition out of the cozy bassinet as he’s outgrown it, so I’m sure this will change as his bed gets bigger.
  • My babe moves so much in his bassinet now. I catch him with is head up against the side and his body almost sideways. Scares me. I end up moving him back to the middle. He also bangs his hands and legs. Poor little guy. I think its gas. I should be moving him to his crib soon so he doesn't hurt himself. I don't like seeing him sideways in his bassinet. Yikes.

@nancysimp definitely sounds like it’s time. I wasn’t ready for him to go to his own room so I bought a mini crib for next to our bed.

I almost came on here last night to tell you guys about my 8pm bedtime success story... until he woke up at 10 and literally slept a collective 3 hours last night.  He was crying and kicking and stiffening his whole body. He had a huge poop this morning which I'm hoping is what caused all that mess last night.  But omg there isn't enough coffee in the world for this day.
  • @sgrn18 sounds awful! Poor baby prob had a belly ache...awww. Poor mama is gonna have a long day today. Sorry mama. We feel your pain.
  • Anyone have advice on getting LO to sleep outside of home or the car?  N's usually a dream, but when we visit our parents, she REFUSES to sleep. If she's really exhausted, she'll pass out in my arms - but the summer heat or other people's voices wake her almost immediately. If I try to put her down in another room - I've tried crib, swing, floor, car seat - she's up instantly. Any ideas?  We want to visit family more frequently, but I hate knowing how sleep-deprived N gets by the end of each visit.
