@Lucky2K13 with my daughter that was about my result, and injust barely failed the 3 hour. But honestly I’m glad I did, because I was easily diet-controlled for a few weeks but then my fasting number (first thing in the morning) started to go up and up and I needed medication to keep it down. Controlled GD (either with diet or medication) has sooooo many fewer risks than uncontrolled.
I failed my 1 hour with a 165 this time...since I already had a glucose monitor they skipped the 3-hour and just had me start testing. I’m headed to the endocrinologist tomorrow with a week’s worth of glucose tests (4x/day) and a food log. I’m expecting insulin...my fasting numbers are terrible and nearly half of my after meals numbers are too high, despite eating appropriately.
I thought for sure I'd fail, because I feel pretty weird after meals (tired, heavy, short of breath), but I passed. So yay! I'll just ignore the weirdness instead of worry about it being GD.
Gonna take the test on Friday! I'm happy I didn't need an appt for it, I can just go in to the lab, drink the drink, come back and draw blood luckily I can eat before, just not within 2 hours before the test..
Does every office do the test the same? I was given the drink at my last appointment and told to drink it on my way in for my next appointment. I have to drink it within 3 minutes, and give them the start and stop times. How soon after do they draw blood?
@Redpuma119 I had 5 minutes to drink mine at the office, had my appointment with the NP, then they drew my blood exactly one hour after I finished the drink.

From what I can tell, no, not at all the same, which is so weird to me! It seems that 1 hour after you drink is when they draw blood. That part at least seems to be standard.
I passed with a 108. I needed to be under 140 to pass. I was so nervous I couldn't eat that morning, even though I was told I could eat protein for breakfast. I took the test first thing in the AM. I drank a lot of water the days leading up to the test and watched my sugar. I still ate carbs like normal though.
I passed with a 103 yesterday. They told me not to fast. I did not go first thing in the morning. I had a protein bar and some nuts and fruit a few hours before the test. I had ice-cream the night before. And, I passed no prob!
I truly am seeing that so much is out of our control with pregnancy. I also had lots of spinach the day before the GD test. They drew my blood for a regular CBC test at the same time as the glucose test. And, while I got good news about the GD, I also found out that I am mildly anemic. You see - it doesn't matter what we do. Our bodies are going to react to pregnancy how they react. Good luck everyone!
I passed with a 96. I think it is weird that there are different tests. I was actually told to eat bacon and eggs before coming and not to fast. I had 5min to drink and they drew my blood one hour afterwards. However, after they took my blood I had to lay down for a little while because I almost passed out.
Passed with an 88. I had another 1hr earlier in my pregnancy since my DD was so big and passed that one too. So happy to not have to do the 3 hr this time.
@Redpuma119 at the one hour test you drink the drink and test your blood one hour later, at the 3 hour test they test a fasting level, drink the drink, then test at hours 1, 2, and 3. Some offices do a 2 hour test instead of the sequential where you do the one-hour and if you fail move to 3 hour. I think that’s also a fasting, 1 hour, and 2 hour, but not positive.
Some docs/labs have you fast, some don’t (this usually just affects their interpretation, especially of borderline results); some give you the drink and trust you to drink it appropriately and tell them the correct time, but others want to babysit you while you do it.
The one one hour test in particular is not reliable—it’s a screening test, not a diagnostic test. GD is so serious and yet so easy to control that it makes sense to use a screening test with so many false positives, to be sure to catch all the real positives.
@shaybug12 the variety in standards of care across OBs drives me crazy. It's so strange how different practices have totally different tests and/or guidelines they follow.
Doing my glucose test today... I have a love hate relationship with this test. On the one hand, it's a nice (in my case) 2 hour break. on the flip side, I'd really prefer to be doing something else.
FWIW, the 2 hour test is the default for my doctor's office. My OB requires that her patients fast prior to the test. Then I/we basically show up at the lab, have a fasting blood draw, drink the drink, have two more blood draws at hour 1 and 2, and later the OB office calls with the results. Knock on wood, I haven't failed one yet, so I'm not sure what would happen in the event I did.
I will do a 1 hour test the last week of June leading up to my 28 week check-up. I'll have 5 minutes to drink the drink and they'll draw blood an hour after I started drinking.
With my first I was told to skip sugar in my coffee and if I generally had fruit with breakfast to skip that as well. I went with coffee with a splash of milk and some toast with peanut butter and passed no problem. Fingers crossed I have the same experience this time.
One suggestion is to have snacks for after. I brought one protein bar with me and it was not enough to get me through an errand and home for lunch. I tolerated the drink and the hour wait no problem, but I crashed hard an hour or 2 after the test and really wished I had brought more to snack on after it was done.

I guess I don't find all the variations all that strange. There's no magic "right way" to do something.
The 2-hour test is diagnostic--so if you fail you'll go right to a specialist for GD, vs. doing the 1-hour screening test then the 3-hour diagnostic test. Is one "right" and the other "wrong"? I don't think so. It's all about your tolerance for false positives vs. putting people through unnecessary testing. It's easy to see how everyone could fall in a different spot on the curve of what's the most tolerable.
I believe fasting before the test is less likely to give a false positive result (although a false positive is still pretty likely)...so some docs don't think it's worth it to fast, and other's do.
There are at least 4 different diabetes tests. They will all be used for slightly different reasons. In the UK you only get tested for GD if you have certain risk factors and they go straight for the 2hour fasting test. I had to have it because I have PCOS but thankfully I'm in the clear for GD.
Last pregnancy I had m&m’s before the test and slightly failed. I passed the 3 hour easily. I wasn’t thinking. Let’s put it this way: don’t be as stupid as I was last time. This time no m&m’s before and I passed with flying colors without putting myself through the horrible 3 hour test.

Last time I took mine right after Halloween. I had massive sugar cravings the entire pregnancy and ate an entire bag of leftover kit Kats the night before the test. Just barely failed it, but passed the three hour with flying colors. I still wonder if skipping the kit kats would have saved me three hours of misery
Had the 1 hr test today. Really hoping I pass. I failed last time and had to do either a 2 or 3 hr test that was torturous! I was so sleepy and nauseated, I finally asked if I could go sleep in my car and they put me in an empty room with a blanket. I would be super, super bummed if I failed the second test. When I pay too much attention to my diet I get obsessive and depressed. FX for good results from today!
After having had failed the 1 hr test last week, I took the 3 hr test on Tuesday (more like 3:45 when all was said and done.... ugh...) and got the results that I passed, with really low numbers actually! What a relief! Good luck to all the other mamas out there going through the same!
I passed! Yay! I was pretty nervous I would have GD. And so glad I don't have to do the longer test again. My hemoglobin was a little low at 11.5 so I dunno if they'll want me to take a supplement or just try to correct that through diet.
Taking 1hr tomorrow and SUPER nervous about it. I had GD with DS, but wasn't diagnosed until 35 weeks (failed 1hr/passed 3hr at 28 weeks with him). That was annoying enough and I just had to deal with it for 6 weeks. Really, really hoping I get lucky this time.
Anyways - for those of you who do fail your 1hr, know that most people who fail that do end up passing the 3hr, and even if you do have GD it really isn't the end of the world. I remember crying to my belly last time, and feeling so scared and worried, but everything turned out just fine! Also - I had such a huge fear of needles and blood before I was pregnant the first time, but even *I* learned how to test my blood sugar like a pro - you truly do get used to it and it's not so bad!

@Car0liiine 11 is pretty damn good for pregnancy. They will probably leave it be. I run around 11 for my pregnancies and the OB is always pleased. And yay for passing!
@lilidubs I’m sorry you have to take the 3 hour but fx you pass it!
I guess I never updated here I passed my one hour with an 87. I was nervous because last time I barely made it under the cutoff.
Passed the one hour, not sure what my # was the Doc didn't say just that I did very well. Phew, my sweet tooth has been large and in charge this pregnancy!

@cornichonmam when I had to take the three hour last time, the people at the lab I went to told me that there were a ton of false positives with the one hour test.
My lab results haven't actually been released to me in my patient portal yet but I found some export health data function that says I passed my 1 hour!!
Iron is just slightly low so I don't know if they'll have me supplement or not, but yay for passing the GD screening!

I passed the 1 hour with a 95. Phew. I was told to eat protein for breakfast and then go to a lab to do the test. I ate two scrambled eggs sprinkled with cheese. Then after the blood draw ate a granola bar.
@magnolia209 My blood test also showed that I'm mildly anemic but my doctor hasn't put me on a supplement. Just said to make sure I'm taking my prenatal.
@Redpuma119 OB offices also have different glucose level cut offs. My OB is 135 but I know some are 130 or 140. I felt lucky because I just had to show up at a hospital lab of my choosing within a two week time period. No Dr appointment needed. I had to drink the drink within five minutes and wasn't allowed to leave the lab waiting room for the hour until my blood draw. Maybe they thought I'd raid a vending machine?! ha It is interesting to see that the procedures vary.
Passed the glucose test with 112 at 1 hour. They had me fast for 8 hours before drinking the glucola.
But, I'm anemic. Hemoglobin is 9.4 and ferritin is less than 8. So, basically my ability to make happy red blood cells is a shitshow at the moment. Whomp whomp.
These actually worse numbers than I had with DD. They have me on an iron supplement. I go back for my next appt soon, so I'll ask when we will check my levels again and the game plan if they are still really low at that time.
