@runrinserepeat If really depends on how particular you will be, how often you do laundry, and if baby spits up a lot or not. With my DS we would put a sleeper on him in the evening and then he would sleep in it and wear it the next day unless he had a blow out. He basically wore sleepers all the time unless we were going somewhere special (a rarity) those first few months. In that case, would buy at least 8-10 sleepers in each size. If you plan to dress baby up more in cute outfits and such, you will need more. One thing I have noticed is that people tend to gift clothes more in the NB, 3 month range, so I would focus what you purchase on the larger sizes (6M +). Personally, I would not cut the tags off of all the NB stuff in case baby is on the big side and goes right into 0-3 month clothes.
Thanks @coco2787. Apparently we got rid of all clothes smaller than 18 months, so I’ve got to start from scratch. Wasn’t sure if I was going a little overboard or not.
@runrinserepeat honestly - a whole lot of sleepers. You might want a few pairs of pants / onesies for when you're going out but sleepers are your best friend. My rule of thumb was to keep about a weeks worth with average 2 a day and then I could do laundry earlier if need be.
@kristah2 I like the sleepers because they’re easy, but at a certain point I get so restless and feel like we’re constantly in jammies and need some real clothes.
What I love are pants with the covered feet, so that I don’t have to worry about baby socks that fall off all the time anyway. They’re freaking impossible to find though.
@hkomthis is a sleeper. One piece, and sometimes the newborn sizes have fold over hands so that you can put it over the baby's hands so they don't scratch themselves.
AFM, @runrinserepeat my daughter wore sleepers all day long, unless we were going out. She didn't spit up much or have explosive poops much, so we didn't need very much. If we brought her out I might put her in a onesie and pants, but sleepers were life. If you don't have regular access to laundry, I'd say err on the side of more than less.
My husband stays at home and owns the laundry operation here, so that’ll be on him. Our first kid was a spitter. Second wasn’t.
It it feels like such a crapshoot. I have 3 sleepers, 2 onesies, and 3 pairs of pants. I suppose I’ll try to at least double that and then just make sure DH isn’t constantly doing laundry to keep up.
@hkom like @Jens_Hoes said! They are like a full one piece outfit that covers the feet. Everyone has different preferences so my advise would be to get a few zip, a few snap and a few in cotton vs fleece and make your assessment then buy more. Personally, we are zipper people. When trying to keep it dark and get baby back in jammies the poor child ended up with missing snaps and all sideways. Plus H is HORRIBLE with snaps. So we stick to zippers. And despite being born in November DS w as a sweater so we didn't do fleece. I had a couple for when we were going out and I felt it was cold but didn't want real clothes (ie. Dr's apts where I had to undress/dress him quickly) but he didn't sleep in fleece ones for the most part.
+1 To my baby basically living in the sleepers for like 3 months. So glad I’m not the only one. My cousin has her daughter always dressed up and it makes me feel lazy. Still to this day my dd usually just wears a cute onsie and (hopefully) somewhat matching pants lol.
Oh! and sleep sacks/swaddles FOR LYFE!!! My daughter at 1 still sleeps in a sleep sack, and I fear the day that she will not.
She from a young age broke out of blanket swaddles, so in my sleep deprived state I bought a Halo sleep sack swaddle in the middle of the night, because it velcroed and she couldn't break out like she could in the blanket ones. Her bedroom is also pretty cold, because our upstairs heat we don't really use, so she's always had many variations of sleep sacks (cotton short sleeve, fleece short sleeve, fleece long sleeve) which she wore over her long sleeve sleepers at night. Since blankets are not safe by the AAP until 12/18 months (and I am a safe sleep fiend) we did sleep sacks to keep her warm.
I am glad you mamas are also sleeper fans. So many of my friends had their kids all dressed to the nines all the time that I started to feel like a slacker, but sleepers were easier and more comfy.
Advise on sleep sacs and swaddles: don't be like me and spent a fortune buying a whole bunch, take the tags off, wash them all and have your kid HATE them. Hoping #2 likes them so I don't feel like I wasted all my money! Most kids do love them though so my advise is buy a few and only wash one - if they are liking it then start using the others. At least you can return them then. I must have 8 swaddles (the velcro ones) and 4 or 5 sleep sacs.
Lol apparently I have a whole bunch of UOs and have just put them here instead of there. I stand by it - to this day it drives me crazy when my kids are in PJs past 8:00.
The only reason DS doesn't wear PJs longer is that they'll get dirty at daycare and he wears them again that night.
We ended up putting him in a long sleeve onesie with a halo sleepsack over when he was a newborn. He did NOT want to be swaddled, so we velcroed under his arms. For me, this helped tremendously with MOTN changes instead of getting footie pajamas off.
I definitely send my 2-year-old to daycare in her jammies pretty frequently (sometimes because I'm behind on laundry, sometimes because it's not worth fighting when she wants to wear her cupcakes to school). FFTC?
We spent most of her newborn days with just a diaper, so our clothing needs were pretty minimal. I suppose with a winter baby that might be a different scenario, but we still typically only change for blowouts and the big spit-ups, so... again, pretty minimal. I think how many outfits you go through probably depends on your personal tolerance for little bits of grossness.
I know my first was probably not very common, but everyone told us not to buy too many newborn stuff so we only bought 0-3 months. When he came out he was only 5 pounds 7 ounces and we had no clothes to fit him. Both grandma's ran to the store and got some premie diapers and sleepers so he had something to go home in lol. He then took over a month to grow out of newborn size.... He was born in July and by the time he got to 0-3 months size, he needed warmer clothes so it all got wasted. Just goes to show all babies are different lol
I wasn't told not to buy NB or 0-3 because I'd get a ton at the baby shower. I barely got any clothes. And I actually got some in bigger sizes! We ended up having to buy NB stuff ourselves. The grandparents of course bought some here and there, but still. I'd definitely have a few things in each size, that way if baby is small enough for NB, you've got something that will fit! Then worry about getting more later.
I didn’t really buy any clothes the first time because my showers provided a bunch (and I figured they would). @Selina1313 My kid was the opposite...born large, and then he spent 3 weeks in the NICU so by the time he was out he was busting out of NB! I’ll get the NB out and washed this time just in case (and FX no extra hospital stay is required, geez!) but I make big babies, I think.

@kristah2 I'm with you on the zippers girl!! I highly recommend the sleepers with zippers!! You will be changing a lot of diapers, especially MOTN and buttons are hard on minimal sleep!! I got a lot of my DD's 0-3 month clothes at resale shops, many were brand new with original tags! They were selling 10 onesies for $10! She was born in August so obviously having baby#2 in December calls for warmer clothes!
Re: zippers vs snaps. I understand why everyone likes zippers more, but at the same time I like how with snaps you don't have to open the whole sleeper just to change a diaper!! I also loved putting my son in nightgowns, so easy for diaper changes!
@CecilB93 I agree that The gowns are the easiest. We prefer zippers because my DH’s hands were too big to get a good grip on the snaps, which is really annoying at 3 am.
We got a ton of clothes from my mom for our first two, but I’m not having a shower as this is my third, I feel like people will be less inclined to just buy stuff out of the blue, and my mom won’t be here by the time LO comes, so I think I’m on my own.
@runrinserepeat Oh no! I’m so sorry Did you tell her that you’re pregnant again (apologies if I missed that particular announcement)?

@echo-charlietango we’re driving up to visit today, and I’ll let the kids tell her. I think I have to, even if it breaks her heart that she won’t get to meet baby.
@runrinserepeat Nooo. That is not what I wanted to hear. I am thinking of you today and sending you lots of creepy internet hugs.
@CecilB93 I prefer snaps. I had one sleeper that zipped from the bottom up!! It was amazing. I have no idea where it came from.
@Jens_Hoes Those velco sleep sack/swaddles are AMAZING! I think I had six total for DS. He hated actually being swaddled with a blanket so that's the only thing that worked for us.
As far as baby clothes, we specifically told people NOT get us any newborn clothes because DH was born huge, he was almost 11 pounds! I figured we'd have a big baby. DH ended up having to go out to wal mart and buy a bunch of newborn clothes. Oops. I don't think we got many 0-3 or 3-6 month clothes either, but were gifted a lot of 6-9 and 9-12. I think a lot of people thought other people would get us smaller sizes, so they all got us bigger sizes. lol

I'm sure this can be addressed in a later product spotlight or something, but it's currently on my mind so I'm going to ask anyway. WHY do so many cribs (aka all the ones I'm currently looking at in the style and color I want) convert straight from a toddler bed to a full-size? When do kids typically outgrow a toddler bed? It just seems crazy to me for it to go from something so small to so huge.
