RE: vacinnations. Would you ladies take the TDAP shot?
Abso-freaking-lutely, and everyone that wants to be around my kid should get it, too.
I would encourage you to read my post earlier on this thread about how the pertussis vaccine works. I included the scientific studies to back it all up.
I did read your post. I also trust my doctor. My doctor says that it's important for caregivers to get the TDAP shot because of the risks that the diseases pose. You're right that you can be sick and not know it, which is all the more reason to get vaccinated.

  • So if vaccinated people, especially recently vaccinated people, are more likely to pass pertussis to your kids than an unvaccinated person (especially one who isn’t sick and therefore cannot transmit disease,) then why would you say that anyone who wants to be around your kid should get the TDaP?

What in the sources you cited shows that vaccinated people are a greater risk for spreading the disease than non vaccinated people? Admittedly, they were quite long so maybe I missed something, but I didn't see any support for that conclusion.

Also, how do you explain the vastly overwhelming support for vaccines among the medical community as a whole, epidemiologists, the CDC, and every other equivalent agency throughout the world? They can't all be part of some vast conspiracy.

Also, each year thousands of children under age 5 are hospitalized for flu, and dozens to hundreds of them die.

    https://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/children.htm

This past flu season,  37 children died from flu between October 1 and January 13.  Seventeen died in mid-January alone.  7 were between 6-23 months, and 2 were under 6 months.

    https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2018/jan/25/child-flu-death-rate-high-expected-to-rise/

If you’ll notice, they combine the numbers for influenza and pneumonia deaths without differentiating what the numbers are separately. I have had plenty of patients with pneumonia who never had the flu. Also; how many of them got the flu shot, but got the flu anyway? How many took Tamiflu and suffered side effects from that which caused more issues? Yes, the flu can kill, but frankly so can the flu shot. I have a local friend, (irl, notvjust online) Crystal, whose toddler son was killed by a reaction to the flu shot. She was able to prove it and got a ruling from vaccine court in her favor. I have another friend (again, irl, not just online, whose otherwise healthy teen son also dies from the flu vaccine. She was also able to prove it and got a ruling in her favor from vaccine court here in the U.S. It happens, more than you would think. My friends typically don’t share the details with most people because of the awful things pro-vaxxers have said to them, like accusing them of “killing children” by sharing their own children’s stories of vaccine-caused deaths. I’m willing to bet thaon each of you know someone who was severely injured or killed by a vaccine, but the families are not open about it.
  • @katethemom yes, while pregnant. I got it with my first and I'll get it with this one.

@AshVA that's exaclry how it was explained to me by my OB, who I trust.

I also asked the grandparents to get it, if they wanted to be around my son.

Last Januray I had the flu and pneumonia. I also received the vaccine. We all know the media reports about the toll the flu took on the U.S. I will get the vaccine, again, this time. My son is a viral induced asthmatic. I will do whatever it takes to minimize the risks of him contracting something potentially preventable.

Just thought I'd add my two cents. I'm adamantly anti-vaccines. To explain, when I was 15 I went in to get a round of shots. Within a week I was allergic to fruits and nuts and gluten, all of which I had eaten my entire life. I'm planning on homeschooling my kids therefore any shots that schools require won't be involved. I do believe in certain shots, but I will do everything I can to protect my baby from being injected with things that its immune system isn't ready for. I've never met a single person who has MMR, pertussis, shingles, chickenpox, ect. This is because our society is so heavily vaccinated. Maybe if I lived in the city I'd feel differently, but I'm in a small farm community. Anyways, ya'll won't like that but that's why this is UO. @libertymomrn I'm with you girl.

    Edited for typos.

  • @katethemom I guess what I was trying to say without saying it is that I feel like my baby won't be exposed right away so I feel that it's ok to wait until their immune system is strong enough to handle the vaccines. I would say rather just stay at home if I know someone is sick than overload by baby's immune system.

  • I'm a little curious about @libertymomrn s beliefs on all vaccines because she only mentioned the flu shot and Tdap. I personally don't get these either. My children's pediatrician does not push the flu vaccine and only says to get it if the kids are in daycare. My OB has never even mentioned Tdap. I might get it it he did, but he hasn't during either of my previous pregnancies. My kids get ALL other vaccines at the recommended schedule, because in my opinion it's just foolish not to. I've had shingles and it is not pleasant. I'm glad my kids won't have to gonthrogo chickenpox or shingles. Let's not even get into how dangerous it is for our unimmunized newborns to be exposed to all of the unimmunized children and adults out there. It posses a threat to our society and I can't get on board with that.
  • Did you guys know that the HPV shot is barely effective? Every year hundreds of new strains are naturally created and the medical community can't even keep up with the rate at which the strains change, therefore the vaccine is a shot in the dark, pun intended.

    re: Board organization

I didn't respond yesterday because I was trying to articulate how I feel about it. I was pretty busy at work and could't take the time to accurately type out what I wanted. Now that I have the time, let me try to say this as best as possible. But be aware, sometimes what I type doesn't come out how I want...I'm much better with a verbal dialogue than text.

I think we have a shit ton of different threads and discussions. I like Weekly Randoms, Symptoms, Weekly check ins for due dates, PGAL check in , STM+ check in, MBF. UP, and FFFC. A lot of the others I skip over because I find that it's a lot of the same just in different threads. I don't mind the product spotlight but can't stick to the formatting anymore because my posts became novels. I also like the Random GTKYs that pop up and even some other "random" posts here and there.

Not a fan of AW posts and Deary Diary posts and I use that opportunity to either point them to the right thread or, if someone else already has and OP is being petty, posting a snarky gif (because I love gifs). I will admit, I am very Type A so I like the organization. However, I don't mind "unassigned" posters posting random threads as long as they actually open a discussion that others can participate in.

FWIW, @sparkymcgeee did tell everyone she was being salty, she said her piece and when people she was referring to ( @galactickates and others?) took it personally (which, yes, it was about them so it makes sense they did take it personally), she had a conversation with them. All she was saying was that she doesn't care as much about board organization and feels that the board is becoming cliquey. She is entitled to feel that way even though I disagree on board organization. Unfortunately, I think no matter what, most BMB become clique-y at some point and I just go with it. It is what it is.

So basically, the board is still getting more users and posters and hopefully some new people (or current members who haven't done so yet) will make the effort to post the threads they want to see to open a discussion. If they choose not to, then some of the original members here will probably continue to do so so that the board can keep up to pace.

  • @AliKay20 Well, the good thing is that you will likely never meet or be exposed to any of the anti-vaxxers on here. But think of all the ones in your community.... Haha

Wow the anti-vaxx discussion happened sooner than I expected.

True except no one has ever made a comment like @bdream0916. It’s always been a fairly heated yet respectful debate - the ones I’ve been on. Never did I think someone would actually joke to run away from the anti vaxxers in my community to avoid getting my kids sick. This is sick on a whole another level.
  • @emmaaa This whole thing saying sparky said she salty as an excuse is BS. If you noticed I didn't ask for her u/o and if she could have pmed me. Saying you have a u/o you don't want to share is AW as it gets.  Accusing me of things I don't do isn't cool.  Saying i'm a board police is a flat out lie and I have every right to be pissed about what she was saying.

I remember the chicken pox being awful despite mine being a relatively mild case. I remember crying from the pain of the itchy bumps and having to be completely quarantined so my siblings wouldn’t get it. My mom has told me cringe-worthy stories about when she got the measles as a kid, too. Why in the world would anyone risk their kid having to go through that?

  • Ladies, something is not wrong with me. We just have differing ideas of what is healthy and what is not. You believe vaccines are more good than harm, and that is totally great. I believe they are more harm than good. I have had chickenpox. I did not say I wish harm on any of your kids. I was trying to keep it lighthearted because things have been so tense on here the last 24 hours.
