When is your appointment?
It was today.
How far along will you be?
15 weeks
What is being discussed?
We got to listen to the heartbeat with a Doppler, and we scheduled the anatomy scan.
Questions/Comments/Concerns:
Now that I’m 35, and considered “advanced maternal age” She had me schedule a “Level 2” ultrasound for the anatomy scan. I’m curious what a level 2 entails.
What is being discussed? Not much--heard baby's heartbeat, discussed sleeping positions, talked about what to expect at the big 20-week ultrasound.
Questions/Comments/Concerns: The Dr mentioned that it's possible my placenta may be low (placenta praevia?)--we'll find out for certain next month when they do the scan. There had been some spotting in a previous exam with no real explanation, but no pain or cramping. If this is the case, it sounds like we could be looking at a C-section. I'm not too worried about it b/c it's still early, Baby is healthy, and there are many scarier things than a C-section.
Married: Nov 2010 TTC #1 since: Aug 2016 Dx: Unexplained 6 failed IUIs on Letrazole & Ovidrel Final (#7) IUI - BFP! EDD: Nov 2018 Team Pink! Me: 31/DH: 30
@soehlerk I had previa with ds, it moved and had I not had other complications, I could have had a vaginal delivery. I may be looking at another previa with this one as I have another low, anterior placenta.
What is being discussed: Just a urine sample and checked the heartbeat on the doppler: 155.. hoping that means girl. DS's was around 140 by this time. Also scheduled the anatomy scan in 2 weeks. We are still team green but excited to see baby again and know that everything is okay since insurance wouldnt pay for any sort of genetic testing this time around.
Questions/Comments/Concerns: Not really. Just cannot believe this pregnancy is going so fast.
What is being discussed? I assume I'll pee in a cup and hear the heartbeat. I'm also assuming we'll schedule the 20 week ultrasound. We are also team green but it will be nice to see an actual baby in there.
Questions/Comments/Concerns: @soehlerk at my first ultrasound they also told me I had previa and will check it again at 20 weeks and that in a lot of cases it moves. +1 to things seeming to be going fast. I had a brief moment the other day of, oh right, we're having another baby and haven't really thought about the logistics of anything lol.
When is your appointment? Tomorrow!!! How far along will you be? 16w 1d What is being discussed? The normal question and answer I assume, pee in a cup, listen to baby's heart beat, and schedule anatomy scan Questions/Comments/Concerns: I am so beyond ready to see my baby again and to know whether I'll be buying blingy things or blue!
When is your appointment? Thursday morning How far along will you be? 16+4 What is being discussed? This will be the first of my biweekly ultrasounds to measure my cervix Questions/Comments/Concerns: I'm also supposed to start progesterone shots this week. There was a hick-up with the insurance, so now I might have to wait until next week. I hear they are really painful, but I want to start them when I'm supposed to because I REALLY don't want another preterm birth experience.
What is being discussed? Anatomy Scan and follow up with the Dr. I will post a US picture and more details in the AS thread.
Questions/Comments/Concerns: We got the results from the NT/NIPT and everything was negative! I also asked about my pelvic pain and the dr said heat or ice and tylenol. If it gets worse we will do physical therapy!

@soehlerk - I've had previa twice before. The first time it resolved itself by 20 weeks, the second time by 28 weeks. Fx yours resolves on its own too.
When is your appointment? It was this morning.
How far along will you be? 16w4d
What is being discussed? Normal 16 week appointment, checked the heartbeat and had some blood drawn for my thyroid and something else that I can't remember now.
Questions/Comments/Concerns: My youngest will be 18 months when this baby is born and last time I went from 5cm to 10cm dilated in 25 minutes and my OB didn't make it to the delivery. Today he started talking about inducing a little early this time since the likelihood of another precipitous birth is pretty high at this point, especially with this pregnancy being so close to the last one. I am so against early inductions that are not medically necessary that I am currently feeling very conflicted about it and will really need to chew on it. I'm kind of glad he brought it up this early so I have time to really think about it.

@vrj0522 to how fast your last labor was. for what it’s worth, i’ve seen some research that suggests 39w is actually the ideal time to give birth, having the highest percentage of positive outcomes and also it’s around the time that the placenta reaches it’s best by date. maybe that will make you feel better about the decision?
@vrj0522 Is precipitous birth bad or harmful in any way? Or does the OB just want to induce you early to make sure you have the baby in the hospital and not at home or in another accidental location? How long did it take you to go from 0 to 5 cm dilated? Sorry for the 20 questions, I'm just curious.
What is being discussed? Just a normal OBGYN appointment
Questions/Comments/Concerns: OBGYN brought out the doppler and was able to find the heartbeat right away. But once she did, we heard this loud THUD, and the doctor said "oh, she kicked me!" She was taking a measurement of the heartbeat and a couple of seconds later, we heard THUD THUD THUD. The doctor said, "I think someone is trying to tell me they don't like the doppler very much!" It made my heart melt, but I think we're going to have our hands full with this little girl. We've been having talks about manners ever since
@highsteaks - the OB did mention that baby will be full term and therefore in great shape to be induced. I just feel so bad ripping her out before she decides it's time.
@offtoneverland - the concern is that I could end up giving birth outside of the hospital. That plus the fact that I am currently GBS+ so there might not be enough time for antibiotics. With my last, I was actually at 3 cm dilated 2 days earlier at the OB's office. The day I went into labor I had inconsistent contractions for 7 hrs before we showed up at the hospital at 4 cm. They sent me for a little walk and then everything went super fast. I never had braxton hicks with him so I think that's why I was in unproductive labor for so long that day. With my daughter, I did have BH and my labor from beginning to end was about 5 hours. I feel like depending on how the rest of the pregnancy goes, we could wait until she comes on her own or until a day or so before her due date, but I would much rather just wait for her to come on her own. Something about ripping her out early just doesn't sit well with me.

@vrj0522 from your op about it, and again from your replies, i see that you have a very strong opinion about induction. i’m sure you have very good and sound reasons for feeling that way and i realize i shouldn’t have tried to change your mind because it’s not my business.
that being said, can i stand on my soapbox for a moment and say that decribing induction as “ripping [baby] out” makes it sound like a shameful thing for those who have had one, myself included for my first and very likely for this one as well. there are many good, unselfish, medically necessary reasons for having an induction and no one should feel ashamed of that process if they come to it. and, ripping baby out is NOT what it’s like. sorry, end rant.
@highsteaks I can 100% understand what you're saying regarding induced labors and how phrasing it as "ripping [LO] out" does imply it as a shamful thing and that doesn't sit well with me (but also just to put on record, I don't believe that was VRJ's intention, no matter how strong her feelings regarding inductions may be). Just to play a SMALL bit of devil's advocate for @vrj0522 per her original post I think she mostly has strong feelings regarding non medically necessary early inductions. I can't imagine anyone suggesting someone not induce when it is a medical necessity. That would be incredibly dangerous.
IMO, this type of induction seems right on the edge of medically necessary to me though (than again, I don't know all situations necessity vs non necessity). Granted, it is a possibility for any one of us, but if I knew ahead of time that I were highly likely to not make it to the hospital before LO arrives that would be worse (IMO) than inducing before baby naturally decides he/she is ready.
No matter what, @vrj0522 as you mentioned, I'm glad your OB brought this up early so that you can process and decide what you want to do. I hope you can come to a decision you feel comfortable with.
Eta: just reread that you're also GBS+, to me that pushes induction firmly into a medical necessity (IMO) unless you test GBS- closer to due date. But as stated I dunno all situations that are necessity vs non-necessity.

@highsteaks I would also be curious to see the research that suggests that 39w is best. I would really be surprised by that. The March of Dimes, and this is kinda their thing, really advocates that women should try to get to at least 39w at the very earliest unless medically necessary. Here is their info on that
The phrase “placenta reaches its best by date” at 39w really rubbed me the wrong way personally. I think the treatment of due dates as expiration dates even in routine pregnancies is behind too many unnecessary inductions. Most normal pregnancies can go to 42w if both Mom and baby are doing fine.
AFM, I went to 41w1 with DD, and it was a great l&d. I think that was just when she was ready. She barely cleared 7lbs even then. If I’d been induced a full two weeks earlier, maybe things would have gone just as smoothly but, then again, maybe not.
As someone who had her kid via c section at 35 weeks because I was to sick to continue pregnancy (thanks ICP), the term "ripped out" does not sit well at all. My baby was literally torn from my body, because I probably wouldn't have survived long term if we induced. I will probably never know what a full term pregnancy is like, nor what it's like to have a vaginal birth.
I'm not trying to beat a dead horse, nor am I trying to make anyone angry, etc. But, as a mom that already receives flack for not being able to birth babies vaginally, has to have c sections (or "ripped out" if you will), and will probably never have a full term birth; it kind of raises my ire a bit. I watched my sister have 3 babies via induction and she pushed them out. A drastic difference from ripping out.
Ok, I just needed to say that. I am very sorry if I offended, upset, or angered anyone. It wasn't my intention and I in no way thought anyone meant any I'll will etc, but words have power. Words like "ripped out" in conjunction with birth can send a mom to a very dark place very quickly. On the day I gave birth, I started My day at the Dr, went to L&D triage for labs, then was told I was having a baby. This all happened in the span of a few hours. I didn't get a choice, no one asked if I was ready, what my birth plan was, nothing. One minute I was thinking it would be a normal day, the next I'm being prepped for surgery so that can "take the baby". "Ripped out" sent me spiralling, quickly.
@wildrainbow lovetits meant as I see and recognize what you went through and *hugs* not because I "love" that you went through that traumatic experience

@highsteaks and @wildrainbow - I'm sorry if I used a term that was offensive/triggering for you, or anyone else. That was not my intention at all. I don't believe in shaming moms for doing the best for their baby so if that's the way I came across, I am really sorry.
Like @lurvleybunchococonuts stated, I have absolutely nothing against, and I actually support, inductions, c-sections, and pretty much any type of birthing method that is medically necessary to have as healthy of a baby as possible. I have had 2 very close friends who just had inductions in the last year because they were past their due date and one never goes into labor on her own and the other's placenta wasn't looking good anymore. I have absolutely nothing against any of that. However, having an elective induction simply because waiting until 40 weeks doesn't work for the mom's calendar or because it's inconvenient, feels selfish to me and that I simply cannot support. I'm sorry if this is an unpopular stance.
With that said, I understand my doctor's concerns and all I am trying to do is find a way to work out in my mind a possible induction without feeling like I am doing something that is unnecessary for my baby.
@lurvleybunchococonuts - All 3 of my kids have come within a day of their due dates (two were 1 day early and one was 1 day late) so I pretty much have gone into labor right on time. That's why I am thinking if we wait until 1-2 days before her due date, we could be okay. Although maybe 1 day could be too late... so maybe 2 days.

@vrj0522 ahhh gotcha! I'd think a day or two before your EDD would make a lot of sense. I'm curious if a potential option would be to start antibiotics a few days before your due date, although you'd still be running the risk of delivering outside the hospital and overuse of antibiotics might be worse... I just wonder if it would even be a possibility. Do you live relatively close to the hospital at least? I'd likely be running at any contraction, BH or otherwise if I were you

i knew exactly where vrj0522 was going, re:medically unnecessary inductions for the comfort of mom, and obviously it must be a problem if march of dimes is addressing it.
@lurvleybunchococonuts my main concern was pp using the phrase she did, and i tried to address it while also avoiding attacking her for her beliefs/experiences (and i’m not great at always expressing exactly what i mean) because i don’t think she deserves an attack at all. i just want to let it be know that i’m not ok with that phrase used in that way.
@lifesabeach85 i was a fool to mention a study i read years ago without a link to back it up, so that’s my bad. but the content was so remarkable to me that i’m fairly certain i was paraphrasing pretty accurately. that being said, that’s still not good enough for putting it back out there, but it was my intention to make pp feel better about a possible early induction. i did attempt to find the original research after i posted (with no luck, of course). i came across the march of dimes first, and read through it. it is very alarmist imo, which is something that i have a problem with, but i guess that’s the best way to scare moms who may be thinking of pursuing an unnecessary induction, and who am i to attack march of dimes? and, i chose the phrase “best by date” very precisely, because a best by date is NOT an expiration date—with the same connotation that a shelf stable product has, that it is perfectly fine after the date, but may not be at its peak anymore. i mentioned that i tried to find the original study with no luck, but i did find this page last night, which was not written with the express purpose of supporting induction at 39 weeks, but also presents some of the facts that i tried to succinctly address, mainly that there is a sweet spot for the highest percentage of positive outcomes for birth, and it tends to fall in the 39-40 week range. problem is, it’s a long read and there is not a single section i can point you to that contains my whole argument. but, here it is if anyone interested: https://evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-on-inducing-labor-for-going-past-your-due-date/ and if anyone comes back in here having only read a portion of it and tries to argue that see, it says that early induction is bad, i’ll send you right back to finish reading the whole thing!
and in case as i came across to the contrary, i’ll support the decision of any mom who has the support of their doctor in whatever way or however long they want to gestate their kid.

@vrj0522 I didn't think you purposely meant anything bad. Thank you for the apology and I truly hope you and your Dr can come up with a plan you are comfortable with.

Discussed the 20 week anatomy scan next week. We also talked about registering for my hospital stay and taking some classes. Set up future appts. Questions/Comments/Concerns: Just curious about the classes and got lits kf good info from the labor and delivery floor.
@lurvleybunchococonuts - we're 35 minutes away from the one I want to deliver at. However, there is a hospital 15 min away that my doctor also delivers at and I think that if I were to go into spontaneous labor, we'd be running there. I will be asking about antibiotics next time, that's a great thought. Thanks for sounding this all out with me!

I don't even know if they'll be doing an U/S or just do a measurement/doppler? I'll be seeing my actual OB this time versus the one I've been seeing since March (regular OB had been on maternity leave). I haven't felt LO move yet, which I know isn't particularly worrisome especially 1) me being overweight, and 2) me being a FTM. I thought I felt something a few days ago but it was so short lived/fleeting and vague that I dunno. I've been getting more random aches and pains, and experiencing sciatica which is unpleasant. I swear I haven't been able to wear underwear in the past week because the left leg opening doesn't "hurt" but it's like an uncomfortable tenderness/sensitivity. I just am really anxious to know that LO is alright.

@susan112118 the quad screen also picks up neural tube defects like spina bifida, not just chromosomal issues. We had the NT and NIPT done and will still have the quad done due to a family history of spina bifida, although anyone can have a child with spina bifida so there's definitely good reason to keep it around.

Had my first cervical measurement ultrasound today. All looks good. The only part of baby I could see was the top of her head. We have an elective scan tomorrow though
I found out late yesterday that the karyotype from my CVS testing a week ago showed that my baby girl has Turner syndrome, which was the initial prediction from the doctor based on the size and extent of the cystic hygroma.
This result is confusing because my initial FISH results were negative for TS, so I was a little shocked to find that out. However, under the circumstances, I believe this is likely the best diagnosis possible for postnatal outcome in my case as many TS girls can lead normal lives with hormone and growth supplements. Another common health problem is heart defects, which can be surgically corrected.
The significant downside is that the vast majority of TS babies don't make it to term (I read that 99% of fetuses with TS are miscarried especially in the first trimester, although intrauterine fetal death can also occur any time during the second trimester). I'm 14 weeks 3 days now, and I've read many stories online about moms who lost their TS babies from 14-20w, and some even later.
So although it's probably more likely than not that the cystic hygroma will progress to hydrops and my baby's heart will stop, I still feel at peace knowing that there's nothing I can do or could have done. If there had been another abnormality or genetic issue detected in the karyotype or a subsequent microarray, the prognosis after birth would be much worse and I was really worried that I was going to have to make a very difficult decision whether to terminate the pregnancy based on the projected quality of life of my baby. But now I don't have to worry about making that difficult decision and can just be hopeful that she makes it to term or until medical intervention can help her survive.
I go in for an OB appointment next Thursday and hopefully will get an update on how the hygroma is doing, and that should further inform me of the risk of developing hydrops as we progress.
@mother_of_cats -- I am thankful you feel at peace with finally having a diagnosis, but I'm sorry that the results of the testing were not any better. With those statistics, it seems like a wonderful miracle that you have made it this far, so it sounds like your little girl is a strong fighter. I will be crossing my fingers and praying hard that your sweet baby girl pulls through this.
I'll be thinking of you and your SO too. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with such pain and worry right now. You both have the right to feel however you feel right now and to deal with it in whatever way you need to. Please let us know if you need anything.

How far along will you be: 17w6d
What is being discussed: Just a urine sample and checked the heartbeat on the doppler: 155.. hoping that means girl. DS's was around 140 by this time. Also scheduled the anatomy scan in 2 weeks. We are still team green but excited to see baby again and know that everything is okay since insurance wouldnt pay for any sort of genetic testing this time around.
Questions/Comments/Concerns: Not really. Just cannot believe this pregnancy is going so fast.
Friday, June 8th
How far along will you be?
16w2d
What is being discussed?
I assume I'll pee in a cup and hear the heartbeat. I'm also assuming we'll schedule the 20 week ultrasound. We are also team green but it will be nice to see an actual baby in there.
Questions/Comments/Concerns:
@soehlerk at my first ultrasound they also told me I had previa and will check it again at 20 weeks and that in a lot of cases it moves.
+1 to things seeming to be going fast. I had a brief moment the other day of, oh right, we're having another baby and haven't really thought about the logistics of anything lol.
Tomorrow!!!
How far along will you be?

What is being discussed?
The normal question and answer I assume, pee in a cup, listen to baby's heart beat, and schedule anatomy scan
Questions/Comments/Concerns:
I am so beyond ready to see my baby again and to know whether I'll be buying blingy things or blue!
Thursday morning
How far along will you be?

What is being discussed?
This will be the first of my biweekly ultrasounds to measure my cervix
Questions/Comments/Concerns:
I'm also supposed to start progesterone shots this week. There was a hick-up with the insurance, so now I might have to wait until next week. I hear they are really painful, but I want to start them when I'm supposed to because I REALLY don't want another preterm birth experience.
How far along will you be? 18w4d

We've been having talks about manners ever since
@offtoneverland - the concern is that I could end up giving birth outside of the hospital. Something about ripping her out early just doesn't sit well with me.

that being said, can i stand on my soapbox for a moment and say that decribing induction as “ripping [baby] out” makes it sound like a shameful thing for those who have had one, myself included for my first and very likely for this one as well. there are many good, unselfish, medically necessary reasons for having an induction and no one should feel ashamed of that process if they come to it. and, ripping baby out is NOT what it’s like. sorry, end rant.
But as stated I dunno all situations that are necessity vs non-necessity.

https://www.marchofdimes.org/pregnancy/why-at-least-39-weeks-is-best-for-your-baby.aspx

@lifesabeach85 i was a fool to mention a study i read years ago without a link to back it up, so that’s my bad. but the content was so remarkable to me that i’m fairly certain i was paraphrasing pretty accurately. that being said, that’s still not good enough for putting it back out there, but it was my intention to make pp feel better about a possible early induction. i did attempt to find the original research after i posted (with no luck, of course). i came across the march of dimes first, and read through it. it is very alarmist imo, which is something that i have a problem with, but i guess that’s the best way to scare moms who may be thinking of pursuing an unnecessary induction, and who am i to attack march of dimes? and, i chose the phrase “best by date” very precisely, because a best by date is NOT an expiration date—with the same connotation that a shelf stable product has, that it is perfectly fine after the date, but may not be at its peak anymore. i mentioned that i tried to find the original study with no luck, but i did find this page last night, which was not written with the express purpose of supporting induction at 39 weeks, but also presents some of the facts that i tried to succinctly address, mainly that there is a sweet spot for the highest percentage of positive outcomes for birth, and it tends to fall in the 39-40 week range. problem is, it’s a long read and there is not a single section i can point you to that contains my whole argument. but, here it is if anyone interested: https://evidencebasedbirth.com/evidence-on-inducing-labor-for-going-past-your-due-date/
and if anyone comes back in here having only read a portion of it and tries to argue that see, it says that early induction is bad, i’ll send you right back to finish reading the whole thing!
@vrj0522 i’m good if you’re good.
and in case as i came across to the contrary, i’ll support the decision of any mom who has the support of their doctor in whatever way or however long they want to gestate their kid.
group hug, anyone?

I am 19 weeks 4 days
What is being discussed?
Heard baby's hearbeat at 152. Measured my belly (that was new!) Discussed the 20 week anatomy scan next week. We also talked about registering for my hospital stay and taking some classes. Set up future appts.
Questions/Comments/Concerns:
Just curious about the classes and got lits kf good info from the labor and delivery floor.

Questions/Comments/Concerns:
Not really, I'm just starting to get really anxious (probably for no reason) that something dreadfully wrong is going to happen.

I'll be thinking of you and your SO too. I'm so sorry that you have to deal with such pain and worry right now. You both have the right to feel however you feel right now and to deal with it in whatever way you need to. Please let us know if you need anything.
