@nimmle we really should consolidate especially my student loans. I’ve been so lazy to go into the bank in general that’s my fault too. @cseley321 he’ll admit to his problem if i nag him enough. I’ve suggested his own spending allowance in different formats but still no action in his part. Odds are if i don’t do it for him it won’t happen. It’s sad that i have to use my own allowance (which goes to a separate checking account) to pay bills and not so much my “fun” stuff.
@zande2016 i completely agree. Not having our savings would stress me out more than our current payments which are still manageable but can be better. I think we’ll have to consolidate one way or another by the end of the year. My FSA is really saving us from seeing some medical bills on our regular accounts.
+1 for what @runsomewhere suggested - that is how we're paying the delta between insurance claim and kitchen remodel plus paying off chunk of student loans. It's also how we paid for our wedding years back.
Agreed with keeping the savings. Can you put some of it in a high yield savings account? Mine gives me 1.35% in interest vs 0 if I keep the money in the bank if you don't have a lot, it's not like you'll see that much growth but it's still SOME extra money coming in at no cost/effort/ risk and way better than a regular checking. I feel like having your saving us more beneficial right now than using it to pay debt -just tackle it however you can like @zande2016 said.
+1 for 401k loan if possible @wildtot. That’s how we’re planning on putting some down payment on a house once we pay down some more cc debt and get our scores up. And an allowance for DH if you can- my DH has similar spending habits, though just one “hobby.” He can’t have access to our main accounts, he’s got a very addictive personality and would drain through our savings on “investments” (what he calls his card collection... eye roll) if he had total access. So he’s got one low limit credit card for day to day expenses, and I get notifications when he uses it so he isn’t tempted to add it to his PayPal and use it to buy more cards. We’ve got an agreement that he can only buy new cards with money he’s earned from selling other cards, it might be a hobby, but it’s also an addiction for him and I won’t support it.
Omg @acunamatada your H sounds exactly like mine with the PayPal addiction. Mine is addicted to buying/selling tennis crap. He recently admitted to me that as he’s getting a handle on one compulsion, he realizes he’s replacing it with the eBay/PayPal bs. I’m glad he finally realized that and hoping he can start applying the techniques he’s working on to all of His compulsions, not just the most harmful one.
@zande2016 that’s awesome that he’s so aware of his compulsions! DH goes back and forth between seeing it as an addiction vs a hobby. He’s made a lot of progress in the past few years in terms of spending but he’s got a long way to go- he does at least agree he can’t be trusted with our main income even though he’s the one earning it.

Also 100% take away his cc...
