Oh, this might be one - I HATE online shopping. I like to see things in person, try clothes on in person, etc. Like, I love ModCloth clothes but have never ordered any because they do not have a physical store and I can't try things on! I do not understand how anyone enjoys ordering stuff online unless it's like, electronics or something basic.
I don’t see why using natural medicines and eating organic has to conflict with vaccinating. I would feel a whole lot more guilty about my kid dying from a preventable disease than I would about them having complications from a vaccine side effect. Not vaccinating is right up there with disregarding car seat safety or not putting helmets on your kids IMO.

Not to mention it also endangers other peoples' children. Some kids can't be vaccinated due to other medical issues. Not vaccinating your perfectly healthy child puts these other compromised children at HUGE RISK. I'm a mostly you-do-you person, even if I may not agree with everything that's being done. But choosing not to vaccinate can literally kill other people. Your right to swing your fist ends at my nose.
@coco2787 I am all for natural medicines but I feel like there’s a line. I am not going to keep going with an all natural remedy if my child is not getting better. @hkom yes! And a true vaccine injury is rare! I thank my lucky stars that none of my family is anti-vaccine because I’m not sure I could handle that.
Yes @Jens_Hoes, I mentioned on another thread that I don’t take issue with people trying natural remedies, but if there’s a serious health concern you need to take your kid to a real doctor.

@maureenmce I online shop all of the time! I typically only buy from stores that I know and can return to like Target. I do order a lot from Amazon because it's free returns and the reviews help me alot. I live 50 miles from the nearest shopping anything (Walmart, Target, a mall), so for me I hate traveling 2 hours round trip just for clothes. Lazy for the win!

Not only children, and not only just those kids who can’t be vaxxed. My mom is immunocompromised and something like measles could kill her. Speaking of, that measles outbreak a few years ago was when my son was 6-9 months old. They don’t give you MMR until a year. I literally begged the pedi to give it to him and she couldn’t. There are so many vulnerable people, and people choose to put them at risk. It’s selfish and misinformed and gross.
@runrinserepeat Exactly. My aunt was diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer last year. She had a miraculous recovery after intensive chemotherapy for six months, but her immune system was shot during the course of the chemo. People not vaccinating themselves or their kids could kill others. Think about someone who just has a runny nose or low grade fever, but a pretty strong immune system - that could be so much worse for someone who is immunocompromised!
@runrinserepeat My friend's friend had a newborn who got measles during an outbreak here in SoCal. Little guy was only 2 months old, so was too young for his measles shot, and he nearly died during his bout of illness. The photos of that tiny babe fighting for his life in the hospital will stay with me a long time. I am very, very, very staunchly pro vaccinations unless there is a legitimate medical reason not to. We are so very lucky to live in the age of vaccines.
My GP told me a story about a family to used to treat. There was a son who was 1yo and another son who was 3m- so basically Irish twins. The 1yo received the chicken pox vaccine at his appt. The virus transferred to the younger brother and the brother developed shingles at 6mo. I'm all for vaccines but man what a horrible incident to happen. The younger brother will live with shingles his whole life.
Also, I love my breast milk ring. It's a sentimental piece from this short lived time in my life. It looks like a pearl so I wore it everyday until I lost it.
I call BS on your GP @gorgeousariel. That story doesn’t make sense. This is from the CDC website “You can’t catch shingles from another person. However, a person who has never had chickenpox (or chickenpox vaccine) could get chickenpox from someone with shingles.”

An unvaccinated person catching the virus from vaccine shedding is very very very rare. Like, double digits in tens of millions rare. Also this may get me strung up for parent shaming, but it would seem like common sense to isolate the two children from one another until the vaccine-strain virus has died out.

Yeah that doesn't add up. She either misheard or the story is an urban legend. The first outbreak is chickenpox. Subsequent outbreaks are shingles.
We are so very lucky to live in the age of vaccines.
YES!! I feel so lucky to have access to this amazing medical science. It baffles me that people make the choice not to protect their children from horrible diseases that so many people died from too recently.
I don't know if I can pose a question for UO or if it'd be better under a questions thread (just let me know and I'll move it) but I was wondering opinions on circumcision?
I guess I figure it might fit here as I've had friends get pretty heated about this topic before. I'm a FTM / team green so I've never had to decide to / not to and I don't know if I will need to. Anyway, I'm just interested in what people think.

@kelseyyh We chose not to circumcise my son just because it’s becoming a majority thing in then US and we didn’t want him to stand out from his peers. MIL said she didn’t care what we did and then proceeded to lecture me about how it was going to get infected and how her dad had to be circumcised as an adult to join the Navy...blah blah blah.

@PensiveCrayon Thanks for your thoughts! I believe it's probably similar in Canada but I don't actually know. I love that MIL comment. I adore my in laws but FIL will always make comments about how the hubby and I shouldn't listen to other people and that he doesn't want to give his opinion... then proceeds to give his really strong opinion about the topic. Will be interesting to see what comes up when the pregnancy reveal happens!

Vaccines: one of the only mommy wars worth fighting. Almost everything else (shy of actual child abuse) is pretty much you do you, different strokes for different folks, I may choose differently but I support your choice. That one gets to me, though.
My UO: we are big big fans of reading togethert but the majority of old classic picture books are genuinely painful. People keep gifting us Clifford books and Dr, Suess and Nancy Tillman and I CAN'T. Bring on the Anna Dewdney and Mo Willems and Jan Thomas and Salina Yoon. That's the good stuff.

Me too.
@kelseyyh We will not circumcise if we have a boy and I feel pretty strongly about this. I dated someone for a few years who was circumcised and was convinced it had messed up his ability to feel properly. They can also take off too much skin accidentally, which makes erections painful. I think circumcision is unnecessary and can potentially be harmful.
Edited to add: I realize there are some potential medical benefits, like a decrease in UTIs, but the benefits seem very small. I think for me I just recoil at the idea of slicing skin off your newborn. Your son can always get circumcised later in life if that is his preference.
Because this has come up (outside of this group) twice recently: if you are so fucking triggered by my answering in months and “giving you math homework,” DO NOT ASK ME how old my toddler is. Just don’t do it. Protect your precious self.
@kelseyyh We will also not be circumcising if we have a boy. My husband is not circumcised and I really don't see the point living in a country with top-tier healthcare (save the insurance debacle, but that's for another day). If I remember correctly, a lot of the studies on the complications of not cicumcising are performed in less developed countries (places in Africa mostly, I think) with low quality healthcare and... different... sexual hygiene practices. Most of the "benefits" of circumcision (less UTIs, STIs and other infections) can also be addressed simply by teaching your son how to properly wash his penis, wear a condom, and getting him the HPV vaccine (YAY VACCINES!)
*Edit* ALSO, teach your girls that there is nothing wrong with an uncircumcised penis. I think it may be a generational thing since circumcision was soooo prevalent in ours, but I have grown-ass thirty-year-old friends who still squeal at, like, just a photo of an intact penis. That is unbelievably immature and can be very hurtful.
@kelseyhh I think it's a personal preference, but we chose not to circumcise my son. There aren't any real health benefits and the thought of putting my sweet perfect baby through that was too much for me. My H isn't circumcised and it doesn't seem to have affected his life in any negative way.

We are choosing to circumcise if we have a boy. The CDC is split on the risks and benefits to both sides and doesn’t actually have a recommendation. Which is why we are satisfied with our choice.

We circ’ed our son, and would do it again. Honestly I let DH’s decision weigh 90%, so though I was a little torn, I went with what he wanted because he felt strongly about it. I get so irritated when men have strong feelings about my uterus and what I should or should not do with it, I didn’t want to go and do the same thing to him.
I’m going to let DH decide. He’s circumsized, and hasn’t voiced an opinion yet. I’m 50/50. I think it’s physically unneeded, but I understand if LO would prefer looking like DH. *shrugs shoulders* Maybe the CDC will clearly vote yea or nay before December!

My husband isn't circumcised so that might be why it's easy for us to decide not to do it. Lots of people still do it, though it is becoming less popular to do it. While I don't see the appeal it's one of the "you do you" things for me (unlike vaccines).
I think most LLR is way too loud and I do not like their business model. I buy almost exclusively on eBay and try to get used so I'm (hopefully) not taking advantage of someone's desperation. There are some cute dresses in non-crazy patterns though, and they are very comfortable. I think most of the ones below are pretty cute.
