Telling your boss...

Re: Telling your boss...

  • I haven’t told my principal yet since I’m at a new school district this year but I will after my next appointment. Maybe sooner.

  • Now that I had my NT scan this morning, I told my boss this afternoon. I kind of wanted to wait a little longer, but with all the appts I’ve been going to, and the fact that I’m getting bigger quicker this time, I realized it probably made sense to tell her sooner rather than later. She was really excited for me, so that’s a relief. Now I just don’t know when to tell the rest of my coworkers...
  • I've now told all three of the people that I work for, and everyone was excited for me, and no one mentioned anything about when I might need time off or if I might come back after the baby is born. I'm relieved that there doesn't appear to be any pressure yet, but I'm also anxious about when those conversations will happen.

In addition, I also run my own photography business, and I had a great event over the weekend. They want to book me for two more events, one in July, and one in...mid October........great!
  • How long is too long to wait? I’m 14 weeks and in my mind still able to hide he growing bump another month. Nothing official has been said but I think I could be up for promotion or some opportunity for growth for covering for my boss during her maternity leave and proving my abilities, but I would hate for pregnancy to have any impact on that. I also don’t want to wait to the point that it’s really awkward. I’ve been wracking my brain to remember when she told us and I THINK it was at 20 weeks but I could be wrong.
I want to add on to my request for feedback. Since I covered for my boss and have even retained some responsibilities since she returned from maternity leave I really want and feel I deserve a damn promotion. At this point now I’m 15 weeks. I’m closing in on having to tell her. Is it a too bold a move to address my goals/ hopes for my career growth at my next one on one? Then I could try and hold off on the pregnancy news until the following one on one. I feel like a sleezy person doing that, and quite doubtful I’d get up the nerve, but I hate when I know I deserve acknowledgement for my hard work and I’m not getting it (at least nothing in the form of a raise or promotion). If I don’t push for it now it’s basically on hold until 2019 until I’m back from maternity leave.
  • Got hired to a new job 2 weeks ago. I didnt mention it in the interview. Went today to sign some documents and do a drug/alcohol test. I told her and she wasnt upset she said congrats! Last Jan I started my job Jan 31 and found out I was pregnant the night before I started that job. Told everyone immediately. This Jan I started a new job was in training for a week found out I was pregnant.. I just dont need to start new jobs its cursing me.
  • So my boss already knows, but I haven't told the rest of my team...well in 2 weeks we are apparently having a team outing after work at a go-kart/laser tag/mini golf place. Wellllpppp if the cat isn't out of the bag by then, it sure as hell will be then. (I'm not showing yet, I just look like I have some fluff around the middle, so I can hide it by just looking like I've let myself go over the past 2 weeks...)

I know for sure go-karts are out for pregnant ladies, and a quick google search informed me that the laser tag places may prohibit it from a liability perspective. Good thing I like mini golf?
  • Why can't you go-kart? I can understand bummper cars.
  • @sammierose464 - I personally would skip go-karts right now due to the exhaust.  At most of the places I go, if there is no breeze (which happens often in Missouri summers), the fumes build up pretty quickly.  One of the big components of those fumes is carbon monoxide, which binds to your blood preventing oxygen from being delivered to your body amd baby.

Also- go-kart pile-ups.  Not as bad as car wrecks, but you can definitely get jostled pretty good.
  • @sammierose464 most places I've been end up being bumper cars because people are assholes. Also I tend to run into walls. Definitely would not be comfortable, and I would worry about getting rear ended and jarring my body. I'm also sure it's a liability thing too.
  • Who still hasn’t told their boss? How far along are you? When do you plan to tell?

im 16.5 weeks, starting to show. Hoping to hold off until my next one-on-one meeting in 3 weeks but I’m not sure if that’s realistic I’ll be able to hide it that much longer.
  • I haven’t. I am almost 15 weeks and am waiting on my genetic testing results. I’m going to be a first time mom so I haven’t been showing much yet and I was blessed with a pretty symptom free first trimester. @rabtaido1214 if you’re just showing a bit, you can probably hide it with some loose clothing for a few more weeks but I heard it was harder for second time + moms.
  • @rabtaido1214 I’m almost 17 weeks and haven’t yet, either. Starting to bring out the cute flowy tops, which do an alright job of hiding it. I’m hoping to wait until staffing is set for next year, so maybe another month? We’ll see, though!
  • I'm 14 weeks and I haven't told my boss. I don't plan on telling her until I'm 20 weeks. If I start to show earlier then I will probably let her know at that time.

  • Will be 14 weeks tomorrow and haven't told. I work from home so hiding it isn't an issue. Kind of just waiting for the next time I have a call with my boss, which isn't often. If that doesn't happen by 20 weeks, I'll just send an email to my boss and HR announcing DS is going to be getting a little brother/sister.
  • I told my boss a couple of weeks ago and then it was announced at last week’s staff meeting since I was sitting there with the trash can in hand. Everyone has been incredibly awesome and supportive though! It made it easier to tell them since I am on contract to teach next year. If it was shakey, I probably would have waited.
  • Thanks everyone!
  • I'm 13 weeks. I started this job about 3 weeks ago. Terrified of telling anyone. I want to wait until my 90 days are up (July 3rd). That may not be so easy, I'm showing a lot more a lot earlier with this pregnancy than I did with my first. The bright side is that they don't really know me and I'm overweight anyways, so I can pass it off as bloat right now.

It's a small company with a really low employee retention rate (and apparently the fear of being fired is pretty common around here). I'm not even sure who to talk to about it first. We don't really have an in-house HR person. I could go directly to the owner, but I think I want to talk to someone from the firm who handles our HR first. Which is awkward because I originally interviewed for their company, but they thought I was a better fit here, and recommended me for this job.

The company does offer pregnancy disability leave. I won't qualify for FMLA, and probably won't get paid family leave, but I should at least get 8 weeks off, and state disability benefits during that time.
  • @BrittanyCupcakes I'm sorry it's a stressful point for you right now. I'm sure you'll feel better once it's done, but I don't blame you for your fear and uncertainty.
  • @sammierose464 Thanks. I've been involved in two little "mistakes" the last few days, and I'm really not feeling confident that I'll stay here (ultimately, I haven't been treated as the responsible party, but it's still nerve-wracking). Then part of me is thinking, why do I want to be at a job that makes me feel afraid like this? But then I realize how bad things were the last month when we had virtually no income, and I know I need to try to make it work here for awhile. I don't want to start the job search over again, especially now. As long as they'll keep me, I plan on sticking around. And if things haven't improved by the time I take my leave, I may use that time to put some feelers out.
  • Job searching SUCKS, so I understand. And wanting that piece of mind of income is helpful while you're expecting such a major life event. Maybe you can spend some of your maternity leave (when you're not catching up on sleep or taking care of baby) to job search a little. I think a few ladies are expecting to do that. It's not worth always feeling like you're on eggshells.
