Talk to me about induction!

I am hoping to hear some experiences with induction!

My first was what they call a precipitous labour (under 3 hrs). I had first contraction at home, called midwife, went through transition in the car, got to hospital fully dilated and baby came shortly after. No time for meds of any kind. The experience was scary and chaotic, but also felt natural like my body knew what to do.

This time around my OB is suggesting induction. I do not want a home birth, it's just not for me. I also don't want to give birth in the car or anywhere else unexpected. My OB said we could induce as early as 38 weeks. My first came naturally at 39 weeks. She said if at any point at an appointment I am 4cm dilated or more...she would send me for induction.

I don't know much about induction, except the horror stories regarding pitocin and the higher risk for c section. Has anyone had an induction without pitocin? Just by breaking water?

Hoping to hear some of your stories! Good bad ugly!!

Re: Talk to me about induction!

  • I had an induction with just breaking my water! It was incredibly easy and I pushed 5 times. I did get an epidural right before they broke my water. My body does labor well, so my OB didn't think I'd need anything other than breaking my water (he was right). The only reason I was induced was because babies abdomen was measuring less than 4%ile and they weren't thrilled with that. I was 39 weeks.

  • @hellopartyof5 amazing! I would love to just break water and see what happens. My OB was open to that but said it may not work and pitocin may be necessary. Doesn't hurt to try right!

Hey @nasalot188 a big reason why there is a higher c-section rate among inductions is because of WHY women are induced. Many times inductions are done because someone is high risk (pre-eclampsia, gest diabetes, etc) which make them more likely to need a c-section from those underlying conditions. So it isn’t necessarily the induction itself that results in the c-section (if that makes sense).

Having a baby before means they’d most likely offer a pitocin induction, or depending on your doc and the position of baby, they might break your water as an induction. There is also something called a foley bulb, or catheter, induction, but you need to be at least 1cm but less than 3cm dilates for it to be an option.

Personally, my twins (2nd pregnancy) were induced because my water broke. It was a long labour, I was able to deal with the contractions without pain med (although I had an epidural placed in case of a stat c-section, there were no meds running) and delivered both babies vaginally.

    Good luck!
ETA i was induced with pitocin.

  • So I only know some of these details, but figured I'd share. My friend had her first baby last Nov and she did not want to come out. I believe she was almost 42 weeks when the Dr finally induced. She went in Thanksgiving night to be induced. After two long days of induction, she had a C-section on Saturday. I believe part of the issue had to do with the pitocin dose. Either it some how got turned down or was never set as high as it was supposed to. I know it was a rough few days for my friend.

The plus side was, her baby was born on my SS's birthday!
  • I was induced with pitocin and my kid got stuck. I’m sure it’s bc she was 97% head but I also feel like my body wasn’t ready. So my personal experience was not wonderful. My water broke but I never went into labor so they had to do it.
  • I was induced at 39 weeks 6 days because of high BP I got to the hospital at 3pm finally got to a room at 4 to 5 ish. They gave me several doses of cervidil which caused bad cramping for hours about 15 hours of just painful cramps, running to the bathroom constantly and I thought I was dialating but I was only at a 1 by 8 am I was having contractions since I got there and then the nurse then started pitocin to regulate contractions at like 8am and I dialated to a 2 and the doctor broke my water at like 11 and the contractions were BAD I used the birthing ball and just was in so much pain but finally I got to a 3 and got an epidural. That was about 3pm then I dilated fast, contractions regulated got to a 10 and then used the ball to make baby go lower, doctor was called she came in I pushed for 5 minutes and baby was out at 6:01. I wouldn't ever want to be induced it was a long process. Maybe it'll be different since ive already had a baby. The only benefit was having baby on the due date.
  • With my second he kept flipping transverse and wouldn’t stay head down. And with the position of the cord if my water had broken while he was transverse I had a high likelihood of a cord prolapse so they decided to turn him and induce me. Thankfully he went head down the day of the induction but they went ahead - inserted a foley ballon at 39 weeks to stretch my cervix (which wasn’t super comfortable but not awful) and then once that had dialated me enough (to 3cm if I recall correctly) they broke my water. Contractions started and I walked all night (they broke my water around 7pm) but didn’t progress so was put on pitocin which finally moved things along but slowly. The pattern was super similar to my first labour where it took forever to get past a 3/4 and then I went from there to a 10 in less than an hour. Pitocin contractions are way worse and more painful but still manageable - and because he was my second only about 3 pushes and he was out. I am hoping to avoid induction this time but overall it turned out pretty ok compared to some horror stories I’ve heard so I definitely think a vaginal delivery is super possible with induction!

  • I’ve had one induction and had to be on pitocin for all 3 of my vaginal deliveries. Only because I have a stupid, fully divided uterus.

My induction took 12 hours from walking through the door to when she was out. They started with a very low dose of pitocin and after a few hours they popped my waters. Honestly, it was the easiest out of my vaginal deliveries. By the time I hit 10 cm I pushed twice and she was out. The only complication was that her cord was wrapped around her neck twice so I had to hold through contractions without pushing. That sucked.

The only advise I can really give you is to gather as much information as you can, talk it through several times with your doctor and your partner, and do what you feel is best for you and babe.
  • I had gestational diabetes and was induced at 39 weeks. I went in on a Monday night and got cervidil. Tuesday morning they started pitocin and followed by breaking my water a few hours later. I got an epidural quickly after and was progressing pretty well. But I stopped around 8 or 9 cm and was stuck there for hours. They were just about to give me a c section but decided to let me push. I pushed for 2 hours and had her at 2:55 am on Wednesday. Oh and my epidural kept wearing off on half my body. So for me I wil probably wait until the latest possible day to be induced (anticipating having gest diabetes again). I feel like my body wasn’t ready and I feel like pitocin made everything worse. I would love to just go into labor naturally. We shall see. Most of the people who I hear are induced end up with a c section. I feel lucky that I ended up pushing her out.
  • @jennybean80 ah yes that does makes sense, thank you. I do not have any underlying health issues, so hoping that works in my favor! Just trying to regulate the pace of the labour and location! Did you find pitocin contractions worse than your first delivery?

@momoflogan20 oh man that sounds long and rough BUT I am very happy you were able to deliver vaginally after all that hard work!

@HoosOnFirst that is exactly my concern. I want my body to be as close to 'ready' as possible. My OB seems to be very understanding and will monitor closely near the end to hopefully ensure we don't jump the gun!

@elothair thank you for sharing! I have heard that often times women labour similar, even with interventions. I think with the induction I will still labour fast, but I honestly wouldn't mind it going a bit slower than my first! ;)
  • @nasalot188 I honestly don’t remember them being much worse than my first labour, but my first was not a normal labour. Delivered at 27 weeks, he was under 3lbs, I was more focused on his potential outcomes than the labour itself. (He’s 7 and healthy as can be!)

  • I was induced at 41 weeks with DS. He was still up in my ribs and I wasn’t even fully effaced. Dialed to a zero.

They started me on a med at 11pm that would fully thin my cervix. I was told it would likely start some contractions and dilation, but that I would need to start pitocin first thing the next morning.

At 6am DS’s heart rate was dropping every now and then so they skipped pitocin and broke my water. I was given an epidural. He was stubborn and still wouldn’t come down into my pelvis, so they decided to do a c section around 9am since his heart rate was still dropping every now and then.

While they prepped me, he dropped all the way down, I dilated fully, and they decided to try vaginal. 20 minutes of pushing and he was out. No pitocin, no csection.

  • @mesamyt good advice, thank you for sharing!

@kimmerann3 wow that must have been quite the experience! I bet it was a huge relief to be able to deliver vaginally in the end though best of luck to you this time around!

@krzyriver wow that is so crazy! Stinks you had to through the prep, but what an amazing outcome!
  • So I was about a week overdue when my doctor decided it was best to induce with my son. It ended up being 36 hours before he made his appearance. I was given 2 doses of cervidil, my water was broken for me, and eventually they gave me pitocin. About 3 hours after having the pitocin I opted for an epidural because contractions were so intense. I don't have another pregnancy to compare against to say it was better or worse experience, but I feel like everything was moving so slow and dragging on because my baby and my body just weren't ready yet. I wonder if things woulf have gone smoother if we could have gone naturally instead of being induced.
  • @nasalot188 I had an extremely similar first labor. That’s interesting that your midwife suggested induction, I hadn’t thought of that and am pretty scared of how fast this next baby might come on it’s own! I will have to talk to my dr about that option.
  • @tabbiekat13 I hear ya, obviously going into labour naturally is ideal. I feel very strongly that if your body isn't ready, induction will be a long process. It's such a tough decision, especially in your case when you are overdue and doctors are advising to induce! I hope this time around your baby isn't overdue! For what it's worth I hiked nearly every day the last month of my pregnancy and I swear it's what made my body go naturally a week early!!
  • @aels12 yay a fellow quickie ;)

I had midwives with my first and after his birth they HEAVILY advised home birth for #2 but I just cant do it, personally. They never mentioned induction. I am with an OB this time and it was her first suggestion. I have just really stressed that we monitor dilation closely and don't induce too early...

Fast labours run in my family. My moms longest was 1.5 hrs and shortest was twins in 20 mins!! Its ridiculous when u think about it lol
  • @nasalot188 that is crazy fast! I’m terrified of giving birth at home or in a car. Were you dilated much before you went into labor? I had been walking around at 4 cm for about two weeks before DS was born, but no one warned me when the time came it might be super fast! I have my first appointment next week, it will be interesting to see what my OB says, I’m definitely going to bring up induction.
  • My cousin was induced at 42w. She showed up at 5am, started piticin, he was ready and born at 10ish. She pushed twice, and said the labor really wasn't that bad.

I went naturally at 41w... was in labor for 37 hours and needed pit to move from 6cm, though it was a very low dose. I had an umcomplicated vaginal birth and the contractions didn't seem to change.

So I'm of the opinion you have no idea how it'll go. Hopefully based on your first labor you might use pit, but a low dose just to jump start you. Once your body figures it out it'll do it's thing, and they can top it then. I think if they're looking at you being 4cm prior to induction the Foley bulb is out.
  • @aels12 so because of my family history I had a feeling it might go very fast. My midwives were also prepared for that, as it is often hereditary.

At 38 wks I had them check and I was 2-3cm dilated. They did a very small sweep and there was a lot of blood. That's when she told me she didn't think I would make it to 40 wks.

I lost my mucus plug 2 days after that, and gave birth 4 days after that. I have no real way of knowing but my midwives think when I got my first contraction I was most likely already 6-7cm. Contractions started 2 mins apart right off the bat.

How did your labour experience go?

Let me know how your appt goes and what the doctor suggests! Always nice hearing other opinions :)
  • @Mylitta you are so right! Its entering the unknown. Thank you for sharing!
  • I was sent for an induction at 36+6 for pre-e and GD. She was not ready to come out and I wasn’t ready either. I went in on a Tuesday and only ever dialated to 4cm. They did pitocin and a foley bulb, nothing worked. I only ever felt 30 minutes of contractions, but it just felt like period cramps. On Friday I finally begged them to give me a c-section since I was so miserable from all the meds. The doc agreed and 30 minutes later DD was born at 5:33pm. If I had to do her delivery all over again and actually had a choice, I would have just waited until Friday and then had a c-section.

I was induced with both of my girls. In both cases my water broke and contractions never started. With DD1 my water had been leaking for a couple days but hadn’t truly “broken”. I was 3 weeks early so the induction took a couple days because my body wasn’t really ready for labor yet. We did cervadil for a day and a half and then started with pitocin. I was about 4cm when a dr broke my water the rest of the way during an exam. They were about to break my water anyway so that was good. My nurse had my epidural placed then (thank GOD because I wasn’t even uncomfortable yet and wouldn’t have thought to ask for it). By the time they were done placing my epi (maybe 20 mins later) my contractions were ridiculously painful and I was hurling and crying. Good times. Epi took a half hour to kick in, and that half hour sucked. Then I slept for a few hours, woke up when it was time to push, and pushed for a few hours. I think it was about 3 hours of pushing. I had a wicked tear that took me about a month to heal from, and it sucked.

With DD2 I woke up at 5am 3 days before my due date and my water broke all the way. Had one contraction (I think? It felt weird) and then went in to the hospital. They confirmed that I’d ruptured and discharged me, telling me to come back when my contractions began or in 24 hour if they didn’t. I walked around a bunch at my IL’s condo which is right by the hospital for most of the day, but by early evening I’d totally lost my patience and hadn’t had anything close to another contraction so we went back in to start my induction. Started right with pitocin this time because I was already 2cm dialated, and I had my epi placed immediately. Watched the election results in horror for a couple hours (it was the night trump got elected) and then turned it off and went to sleep when it looked like he was going to win Florida. Woke up a couple hours later to ask the nurse to turn up my epi or something bc I was uncomfortable, but it turned out that was because it was time to push. Pushed three times I think and then I was done! Had the OB coach me through when to back off so I didn’t tear as badly and only had what she said was barely a 1st degree tear. I was completely better a week later.

I’m a huge fan of inductions and epidurals. Never had to rush, had everything right there when I needed it, and in both of my deliveries I only felt unmedicated contractions for 30 minutes total.

  • I havent read all the responses but I am like you. I had a pretty easy labor/delivery the first time. Water broke at 5:30 and he came at 12:30, (no meds) so I had more time than you but I am Scared of this one coming super fast. My Ob doesn’t want me going past 40w bc AMA, and would do an induction with something they put in the vagina. I do not remember the name :/ sorry. With my first I was at 4cm for a month, so that was no indication I was ready :/

Exactly the same experience.  It was awful really.

OP, I'm confused as to why your doctor is suggesting induction at this point...?

  • @nasalot188 that’s funny, at 38 weeks my OB was convinced I wouldn’t make it more than a few more days euther! I ended up going until exactly 41 weeks. I was actually scheduled for an induction at 7:30 that morning. I woke up at 6, showered, ate breakfast and came back upstairs to do my hair. After I got done blow drying my hair around 6:40 I had a bad stomach ache like I had to poop. I went to the bathroom, felt better but then ended up running back to the bathroom almost immediately. Then we realized it was contractions that I was feeling. They were coming back to back with 1-2 minutes in between and my water partially broke. It took us a little bit to get out the door, my husband had to dress me- a t shirt, shorts and flip flops on a 27 degree morning! The drive was terrible, I was in transition the whole way and my husband thought back roads with several stop lights was a better choice than the interstate (lesson learned). We got to the hospital around 7:20 and could go right to a room thankfully since I was scheduled for the induction anyway. My water broke the rest of the way as we walked into the room and by the time they checked me I was fully dilated and ready to push. I didn’t feel the urge to push though so it took me a bit to agree to try- I didn’t want to lay down. Finally I agreed and baby arrived at 9:18!
  • @lest12 they are suggesting induction because of how quickly I labour. This one will most likely be faster than my first and there's a strong possibility I won't make it to the hospital or could deliver in the car. So she is suggesting induction to make sure a) I am in the hospital in a safe environment b) we can try to regulate the speed as there are some complications with delivering so quickly (DS had so much fluid in his lungs after birth it caused major issues. Normally the fluid works itself out with each contraction as baby comes down. But when they shoot down in less than an hour, that fluid doesn't come out and causes babies to choke on the mucus if not monitored!)

I do have the option of course to go naturally and avoid induction - I am just very afraid of how fast it could go and where I'll be. Will I even have someone with me to drive, will I need to call an ambulance etc.
  • @Laumb11 wow 4cm for a month! That's crazy. I was 3cm for a week and was panicked haha
  • @DunkinDecaf wow sounds like your second was a much smoother experience! Thank you for sharing! It does seem like inductions are much smoother the closer you can wait to the due date.

@missmaehurt wow yes I can only imagine how long and draining that must have felt. 36+6 is quite early, you don't have a lot of options with pre e though I can imagine...doctors want to ensure a safe baby!! I hope this time around things are smoother or you can opt for RCS if you wish :)
  • @aels12 woooow such a similar experience! The only thing I will say is when I felt those first contractions I KNEW lol it was like nothing I've ever felt. It felt simultaneously like the worst period cramp ever and the major need to poop!! I wouldn't get off the toilet because that's where I felt the most safe.

Is there anything worse than transitioning in a car? I think not  :s
  • @nasalot188 really they were both very smooth experiences. Given how quickly your last labor was I bet an induction would fly by for you. Sounds like a really good idea to me. Would they let you go to 40 weeks or do 39 or something to make sure you don’t jump the gun?
    BabyFruit Ticker
  • So, it sounds like some of you have suggested that your labor experiences might be hereditary?

If my mother had to be induced for both of her labors (her water didn't break for either) and both my brother and I were more than a week late, does that increase my chances for the same situations to arise?
  • @DunkinDecaf I think its a good idea too, just have to get my head around it!! So she said we can induce as early as 38w but I said I'd like to wait until I'm showing signs of being ready...ie dilation, effaced, bloody show. I know it's not always that easy but she did say there are typically tell tale signs that a woman will go soon, and we'll monitor closely. I guess we'll just take it day by day when that time comes :)

@sliztee that's a good question, I can only speak to the quick labours but my mom, my sister and myself have all been very quick. I would be curious what your doc says if u ask!
  • @sliztee I'm sure it plays a part, but my mom was in labor with me for over 48hrs. Both of mine were less than 12 hrs.

  • Hahahaha @nasalot188 I completely agree about feeling safest on the toilet. So funny. I went straight there once we got in our room at the hospital too!
  • With my last baby I was induced at 39 weeks. I was high risk and on bed rest for the last 2 months of my pregnancy. To be honest that was my longest and mist painful labor. I was scheduled for induction at 10am, but my baby wasn't born until 4am the next morning. I was given a combination of induction methods (pitocin, foley bulb, and some sort of vaginal suppository...not in that order). I have a fairly high tolerance for pain so I made it until about 3:30 am before the pain got so unbearable that I requested an epidural, but by the time the anesthesiologist got there it was too late.  The baby was already crowning.

My midwife has already said I would be induced at 40 weeks if baby has not already made his/her appearance due to AMA. I really hope I can go into labor naturally to avoid this.
  • I wasn’t necessarily “induced” last time, but I did get Pitocin to move things along. My water had broken 24 hours prior and they wanted to give it one last go before a c-section. It worked and because of the pitocin I didn’t have a c-section. So there’s that!

This go around I will have a scheduled induction for other reasons. They’ll try every method before Pitocin (at my request) first.

  • I wonder if an option is to stick close to the hospital or actually stay there after "x days" out from due date instead of induction? (I live an hour from my hospital so I do totally get if that's not practical).
