Update* TW- Anatomy Scan

missybutler94missybutler94 member
edited April 2018 in August 2018 Moms
I had my anatomy scan on Saturday and got the results back today and the Dr said it looked like the baby had cysts blocking or on her left kidney or possibly on her ovary blocking the kidney.

The genetic specialist called me and booked my in depth ultrasound for Tuesday morning and told me that baby’s amniotic fluid level was good, which means at least one kidney is functioning properly.
She told me they couldn’t see the second kidney at all possibly due to it being in a lower spot or due to cysts on it causing it to stop developing. Basically I won’t know any definitive answers until that appt and I am just worried sick.

I know it’s not the worst abnormality by any means and I am so thankful that it looks like she is completely healthy in every other way and has at least one working kidney. I am just so shocked and hoping and praying that she will be okay.

Huge hugs to you! I understand what you’re feeling, we had a similar experience with DS. Try and keep busy in the meantime, which is easier said than done, and don’t be afraid to call your doc if you need any further clarification about it all. Here if you need to chat!!

@missybutler94 I'm sorry you had a scary A/S.  I had the same experience with mine just this past Tuesday (I shared on the appointments thread).  My doctor suspects that our baby boy has a multicystic dysplastic kidney (MCDK) which is actually a relatively common condition and assuming his left kidney is functioning well it will not be a problem.  You can absolutely have a very normal life with only one kidney.  There are some other possibilities that are way scarier and we are taking precautions to rule them all out but our doctor said that the most likely scenario is also the best scenario so we are very hopeful.

I hope you get some reassuring news soon.  It's so heartbreaking to learn that there is a concern with the baby at this point.  I'll be praying for you and your daughter.

Edit because it didn’t post the whole thing:

@ecwk  thank you so so much! How did you handle it? The waiting is making me worry so much and I can’t help but google like crazy since I have no definite answers. I know being pregnant and emotional isn’t helping either.

@laurad75 I am going to go read the appointments thread now, thank you so much for sharing! I am so sorry you are going through something similar and I will be thinking of you and your baby and praying that everything stays looking very promising! I’m sure it will and I’m praying for the same outcome once I have a diagnosis for this little girl. Will you continue to have additional scans?

@laurad75 sending you so so many hugs and prayers after reading what you had to go through the other day! I am a wreck and can’t even imagine going through all that you went through and being so positive! You are such a strong mama and I know your little boy will be okay! Please keep us all updated
Again I have my Fx for the best outcome for both our babies.

I'm so sorry for the scary news and have everything crossed that it's a best case scenario situation and that baby girl is just fine. I know the wait must be terrible, but be sure to take care of yourself and try not to get caught up too much in the google blackhole. All the hugs!

@missybutler94 I did a lot of reading online about the condition (echogenic cardiac focus) which made me feel better as I realised it’s quite common. I called my midwife back and asked her to go over our odds of having a generic abnormality. Mostly I tried to keep busy until we had the level 2. In between getting the news and having the second scan, it got easier every day as the initial shock wore off. It was still scary but it wasn’t as “shocking”. Talk to your partner about how you’re feeling and go treat yourself to a massage or mani pedi!!!

Not to minimize, but it helps me to focus on the positive, and it sounds like you have 99% good news. If the baby has good amniotic fluid, so at least one healthy kidney, and no other issues it sounds like she'll be ok. I'm so sorry you're dealing with this scare, and please keep us updated. Hearing things may not be 100% perfect would be very stressful and anxiety inducing, so make sure you're taking care of yourself.

@missybutler94 yes. Lots more scans. They had me schedule my next one in 2 weeks. I’m already scheduled to see my OB next week and now I’m also going for a fetal echo cardiogram which is apparently a precaution when they see anything unusual on the scan.  They gave me the impression that I will go every couple of weeks until they are confident the other kidney is performing as it should.  Thanks for all the kind words. It is comforting to know there are others who know how I feel.

@ecwk a mani pedi sounds like a great idea. Im hoping each day gets easier and the shock wears off! I feel so exhausted from today and just ready for bed. I’m hoping tomorrow I wake up with a more positive mindset. My DH is very positive and supportive and adamant that our baby is okay.

Thank you everyone for the kind words, positive vibes and prayers! I’m so thankful to be part of such a supportive group.

@laurad75 I am thankful that someone else understands too, although I am sorry you are going through something so similar. My doctor told me it was likely I will be having many more scans as well. Please keep us updated and I’ll do the same!

I know this isn't the exact same thing, but at my 18 ultrasound they couldn't see her right kidney. They saw something that might be it, but it was really small. They said it could be that it's too low, too early, baby was in a bad position, or she simply didn't have one (renal agenisis). Amniotic fluid levels were normal. I have a follow up ultrasound on April 10th.

The tech told me that sometimes people are just born with one kidney or a low kidney and it usually does no harm & requires no treatment. It's even possible for one kidney to grow a little larger than normal to pick up the slack for the missing kidney.

I'm not a doctor, but I would think your odds are pretty good  even if the other kidney stopped growing, then the one with cysts is likely still working properly according to fluid levels. I've heard of cysts on the brain naturally disappearing with time... I wonder if the same is possible with kidney cysts? Good luck!!

Ugh, it is always super stressful when you find out something (no matter how minor) could be wrong with your child. Try your best to relax and look at the positives, hopefully you can get more answers at your next US.

Hugs. Prayers. I’ve been in a position of receiving similar news after an A/S. And it was a horrible time in my life. Prayfully, my baby ended up completely
healthy. The scan was wrong. Keep on doing your thing and just trust in God’s plan. :) HUGS!!

Thank you so much @dirtanddiamonds I definitely feel like this is one of the hardest things for me because I want everything to always be perfect. I am praying and praying that they just didn’t get a good picture, and trusting that God wouldn’t give us more than we can handle! I am so glad for you that your precious baby turned out to be perfectly healthy!!

Thank you everyone for all the support it has made a world of difference for me to be a part of this community during this time!
