@megnwingate We went straight from crib to a twin on a frame. His bed was against one wall and we had a rail on the side for about 6-9 months or so. He did great with the transition. We did the switch in the morning so that his first time in the bed was for nap time and not bed time. He was great that night. We plan on doing the same thing with DD. Hopefully she’ll transition as well as DS did.
@JLyn821 that reminds me, one of my friends that had a smooth switch to the toddler bed/big bed put the bed in the room with the crib still there and did naps in the big need for a few days/week but kept night sleeping in the crib until her kid was comfortable in the big bed. I'd forgotten she said that's how they did it. I'm hoping I'll remember come this summer when we switch our guy out of his crib.
DD is 19 months and she is still in a PnP. Didn't see the point in wasting money on a crib when we would need a PnP anyway for trips. I just got her a better mattress for it I've she was old enough that it was safe. However, last week she climbed out 3 times. All the advice I've gotten from other moms is to basically keep your kiddos in their "cage" as long as possible, haha. For now a sleep sack keeps her from escaping, but I'm thinking we will need to transition her to a floor bed before baby #2 arrives. FML.
I think first we'll just put her current mattress on the floor where the PnP is and maybe put a baby gate around it so she isn't throwing herself against the door all night long?? And then she will move to her "big girl" room where we will do probably a full/double size floor bed so we can lay down too. Obviously I hope we won't have to, but I'd rather plan for the worst and be comfortable if we need it.
For those who have already done the crib to bed transition, how long was it before your LO wasn't up and down all night? I want to make sure we do this with plenty of time to spare before all the big changes of the new baby coming.
@Car0liiine from what I’ve read you should give yourself a couple months to make sure the toddler is used to it and doesn’t feel like they’re being displaced for baby. As far as how long before they’re not up and down all night I think that depends on the kid. We’re starting in Friday so I’ll update over the weekend on our experience
Dd transitioned really well to a big bed. I think we did a mattress on the floor for just a week or so, then twin on a frame with a body pillow under the mattress protector and sheet. A year later and she just now has started occasionally getting out of bed alone. It was like she didn’t know she could get out, so she just hollered for us like she would from the crib.
I’ve known several friends who’s kids have been the same, so I’m hoping all smooth and easy transitions for you mamas!!

So I'm not sure if this is going to be temporary or not, but my DS actually chose me over my mom today when I got home which is huge. She watched him FT for us from 3-9 months before we started daycare and now it's for sick days and when day care is closed. For the longest time DS would cry every time she would hand him back over to me, and cry as soon as she left our house. Even when we were out in public or at a family gathering! And both Monday and today when I got home he came right up to me and didn't want to go back to my mom. I hope she's not hurt by this, but it was really hard on my mama heart to deal with this for so long and it made me so happy to have him in my arms when I got home.
@nlc8424 I'm chopped liver when my husband is home. Like if we go out for dinner and leave buddy with the babysitter and come back he'll run passed me to go get to his dad. It's 50/50 if he chooses me or my mom. Sometimes it hurts my feelings but other times I'm just really glad he has such a good relationship with them. But, yeah, sometimes it really hurts.
@stothi yeah for a while I just shrugged it off. But sometimes it was just down right embarrassing when we would be at my in-laws house or at the doctors office and she would be acting like the overbearing mom who he couldn't stand to be away from and he's all "peace out mom" to me. I do appreciate that they have such a good relationship and he's so comfortable with her, but I really enjoy when he's happy to see me and doesn't care what my mom is doing or if she's left.
I was so proud of myself today. Buddy and I made it through with him only watching 30 minutes of tv!!! We went outside and played for almost 2 hours! His meals were kinda, eh, but he had plenty to eat and some of it was healthy(ish.) I even managed to bathe him and wash his hair. And... Hold on... Wait for it... I did the dishes too. Boom! That's right. I'm just that good. (Don't ask about the rest of the house...)
DD (22 months) has a recurrent ear infection. She seemed to be getting better, on a new antibiotic since Monday night, but woke up at about 3:30am and wouldn’t go back to sleep. Took her back to the doc this morning, and they think the ear is improving, so nothing else to do right now. I’m so tired. I’m so worried about tonight! Every time this happens I feel like I have PTSD over it.
@yankeeinthesouth we had been seeing an ENT, due to some ear infections last year, and had one (hopefully) last visit scheduled. They wanted her to pass a hearing test and have no fluid before they cleared her “for good”. Then this happened! We thought we were in the clear after a year with no problems...we made it all the way through cold season until March! But I guess not Our next ENT appointments is in May...if she’s not doing better over the next 24 hours we’re going to try to move it up.
MandyMost Oh man. That’s so frustrating. And this starts the whole ‘fluid in the ear’ process all over again for you guys. My DD has a similar experience with ear infections and we ended up going the ear tube route. Her second set (long story) was placed in July and she’s only had one ear infection since then (when she had the flu this winter). Before the tubes they were literally one of top of another. It was insanity.
Speaking of thw ENT and tubes and all that jazz... we got some bad news recently that I’m, honestly, having a little trouble processes. Our DD was diagnosed with mild unilateral (left ear) hearing loss. They say it is likely genetic and so we are moving forward with genetic testing and all that jazz. I know we are “lucky” that it isn’t worse but it’s crazy how hard it is to accept.
@yankeeinthesouth sorry to hear about the hearing loss diagnosis. While it could be worse, it’s still something you probably never expected to face. I hope it remains mild as she grows.
On the the topic of sleeping and toddler beds- we have one of those magical unicorn kids who sttn extremely early, like a few weeks old, with basically no effort on our part. Kid just loves his sleep (like his mama). Even his 4 month sleep “regression” was super mild and lasted a whole week. We never had to go into his room in the MOTN after that. I am expecting #2 to put us through the wringer as payback.
DS is 25 months now and still in a crib and I’m afraid to change anything because it still works for us. He’s never climbed out and I’m not sure how he’d handle the freedom of a toddler bed.
Somewhat related, we’re starting potty training TOMORROW ( ) and on the one hand, I know night training would be a little easier in a toddler bed but I’ve read in the PT Facebook group I’m in that many have done it successfully in a crib. And we’re not going to throw another major change at him while PT, so we’ll just roll with it. We’re using the Oh Crap! Potty Training book method and I’m taking Friday and Monday off work so that he’ll have 4 straight days at home to learn before implementing it at daycare. I’m excited/nervous!

@yankeeinthesouth I’m glad the tubes are working but sorry for the diagnosis. It’s something my husband has in his family — his father has hearing aides and his sister has a hearing aide for one side. I think she’s had her aide in since late teens. I’m sure it’s a lot to process for you, but I can tell you for my SIL it never changed her life in the slightest besides having people speak up when the aide is out.
@yankeeinthesouth Sorry to hear, it's never easy to get a diagnosis. FWIW I have several friends with partial hearing loss in one or the other ears, I think one has a hearing aid, but all of them live totally normal lives and most were in came through high school and college even. You still need time to process though, and that's normal and OK.

@yankeeinthesouth it's good to hear your experience...to see the ENT originally my daughter had to see the audiologist, and she still hasn't actually passed a hearing test. I'm not too concerned because her speech is GREAT (well above average for her age), but I just want her to pass the test! She's either been really distracted and/or had a cold, or still some fluid in her ear, etc.
DS is having a hard time transitioning to sippy cups. I mean, I’m not super rushed (he’s just turning one), but would like to get rid of bottles sooner rather than later. So far he doesn’t like the Tommee Tippee (too hard to suck), and all of the no-spill straw cups are annoying, because you have to get your mouth “just right” on the straw to get anything out. He likes the Nuk cup, but that’s basically a glorified bottle with a sippy shaped spout. Any suggestions for a sippy that doesn’t make a mess but doesn’t take a Herculean effort to get liquids out of? The Nuk might be our answer.
Also, he’s sick this week, so I’m continuing formula in bottles another week or so, so that the change to all milk doesn’t come at a bad time. He has been taking whole milk at meals for a couple weeks, but much prefers to guzzle formula.
We had to try about 10 million sippy cups before we found any buddy would use. Then once he got the hang of any of them he was fine using all of them. It just took time. The 360°cups worked well for him and the cheapo generic Gerber Graduates Fun Grips are the main ones he used. When we switched to milk from formula we just kept giving formula in smaller and smaller amounts until it was gone, then it was straight milk. Buddy didn't care at all, so hopefully your guy won't either.
So far we've had the best luck with those Take and Toss cups. They not as spill-proof as other options, but DS seems to prefer them over more complicated spill-proof cups. We have some 360's but I hated them because they seemed to always leak.

@Wishilivedinflorida we used the munchkin cups with the weighted straw and DD loves them. It took her a little while to get used to the 360 cup but that works great now
We used about a million different sippy cups. Those nuk ones with the nipple spout were great to push volume but DS also liked the munchkin weighted straw, too.
We took a side side off the crib this week and it is going f***ing terrible. I always planned on keeping him in there until 3 or as long as humanly possible, but even with a toddler sized sleep sack he crawled out a few nights in a row and it got unsafe. We finally had to get a fancy latch to hold his door closed and now I am the monster who locked her kid in the room. Hopefully he will figure it out in the next couple days. I honestly don’t know which of us has sobbed harder.
@Wishilivedinflorida After buying 264679494 sippy cups, our favorites are the 360, the nuk ones and these straw cups from Target. They have different animal faces and they are always in the bottom baskets in the sippy section. They are much easier than the other straw cups to get liquid from. ETA: autocorrect
@spottedginger I'm so sorry! I'm terrified that buddy won't stay in his crib until his dad gets home. I don't think can handle the transition on my own. I would totally have to lock him in his room. He can unlock the front and back door and it's terrifying!!! He can't open them- yet- cause we have those handle cover things that toddlers supposedly can't figure out, but I get these paranoid ideas that he'll either figure them out and run away or that he'll just unlock the front door and the bad guys will come in.
@spottedginger we start tonight. I’m so scared! We tried one night back in January and it went so horribly we put the side back up for a few more months.
@spottedginger I would be locking that door too. Crossing fingers that it's a very short phase.
Also, just watched my 21 month old eat an entire apple. Like, I did pull off the stem, and then I handed it to him. I guess he likes the core. Weirdo. I know the seeds aren't good for you, but I also know if he doesn't crack them open, the bad stuff stays inside. Guess I should have moved faster, lol.

@spottedginger I would do the same thing if it came down to it. I know that doesn't make you feel any better, but it isn't productive for anyone for a kid to continuously get out of bed and you having to put them back in 16 million times each night. I imagine it's really hard to have the same consistent response to that when you're (understandably) annoyed. Good luck I hope it gets better quickly!
@Wishilivedinflorida happy birthday to your DS! We have had a lot of luck with the nuk straw cup, munchkin weighted straw cup, and now the munchkin click lock straw cups. My DS loves to play with his cups to get the liquid out if he can so we have to be careful. But I have yet to find a totally leak proof cup. Apparently my toddler didn't poop AT ALL this week, not since last Sunday. I wasn't made aware of this until Friday or Saturday though when my DCP mentioned it and then I asked my mom about the two days she watched DS. So I gave him some prunes yesterday, and still nothing. So I went to the store this morning to try to find something, I bought Mothers Bliss Constipation Ease along with some fiber gummies. Guess who called as I was pulling back in the driveway? Yup, my H, to tell me DS popped, and then he promptly went to the bathroom to let me deal with it. At least he likes the fiber gummies.
@nlc8424 Poor little buddy! We do miralax as needed (we were on daily doses when we started solids with DS) and when desperate, glycerin suppositories. A constipated kid is no fun!
@Wishilivedinflorida pretty sure it has a lot to do with stopping his probiotic last weekend and him not eating much Sunday through Monday. Luckily he wasn't acting all that uncomfortable!
@nackie how’s the bed transition going? Our past two night have been a bit better with much less crying. Still not perfect but not nearly as traumatic.
Ugh. We didn’t do it. DH was off on Friday and was supposed to convert the crib, but didn’t and we were gone most of the day Sat do we didn’t have time. There was no way I was going to start it on a Sunday night. Here’s hoping that sleep sack keeps him contained for another week!
@Wishilivedinflorida George was dd’s absolute fav forever!! He’s still her comfort show... yes we watch too much tv...
I will say, I think it slowed her speech just a little bit, because, George speaks in “monkey”, and the man w the yellow hat repeats what george was saying in “real” words, and all is good. ...when kids are learning to speak we do the exact same thing: “garbly-gook-baby-sounds” “oh you want this?” Only we expect them to try and make clearer matching sounds next time, while george never improves his language skills. Totally just a theory, but I’m pretty sure dd’s speech sky-rocketed when we broadened her tv viewing options. I’d say it’s only problematic at the 12-24mo stage when language development is happening.
