Re: Weekly Questions 3/12 - 3/18

  • Thanks for the suggestions everyone. If I have any energy after my son goes to bed tonight, I'm going to try some yoga. Also my husband had a good interview today - I know it might not pan out, but he feels really good about it and part of me is less stressed knowing he might get it (but also not allowing myself to get excited about it because I don't want the let down). I know if/when he finds something it will make a world of difference.

@gingerbride26 I'll have to see what my new insurance covers for therapy. Under my old plan it was $50 per session and not really affordable. I can also see myself getting stressed over trying to find time to schedule appointments - though I know logically I need to make time for myself, it feel a impossible these days.

@zande2016 totally spaced! It's called Ma Yoga. You can find more info at mayogaliving.com. I can't find the page to try out the online classes! Ugh. They also have a bunch of freebies (PDF guides) on the website. And a meditation program for $75. I'll message you more info once I get my bearings on the site, it recently changed!
  • @SmashJam I can't tell where he is but it was interesting this morning because I felt movement and an immediate stimulus to go pee so I think he hit my bladder! It was quite interesting!
  • How is everyone doing with weight gain? I feel like a whale. I gained 16 lbs total with my first and I’ve already gained about 17 this time and I’m 23 weeks. The weird thing is I still don’t look pregnant so I don’t really even understand where it’s going. Doctor is fine with it and thinks it’s because I weigh a little less at the beginning of this pregnancy than I did my first. I’d love to slow it down but she advised against doing anything other than increasing exercise and cutting junk (I don’t eat much junk anyway tbh) but I have gotten so self conscious about it.
  • @Savanna111911 sorry you're feeling self-conscious... if your doctor isn't worried, and you're keeping up your healthy habits (which it sounds like you are), then all seems good.  At my last appointment I had gained 13 pounds at 21 weeks so we're pretty on track with each other.  All that weight is going into increased fluid, blood, boobs, placenta..stuff that's hard to see (well except the boobs lol).  If you are really feeling anxious about your weight gain please talk to you doctor about these feelings, as prenatal depression and anxiety is a real thing and can be treated.

  • Has anyone started prenatal yoga? I'm 23 weeks along and am wondering if now is a good time. Or if there is even such thing as a good time. Is it worth doing?
  • @supersara2 never a bad time to start! Probably the earlier the better so you can get your body accustomed to some poses before you get uncomfortably big.
  • @supersara2 I started at 10 weeks but I'm also a yoga teacher in any case it's never too early! I would absolutely start now if you haven't yet:)
  • Super embarrassing and TMI question that I've had to muster up courage to post lol hemmorhoids. Anyone else struggling with them majorly right now? I'll be 24 weeks Sunday and I have had one flare up and rear it's ugly head this past week. I am on day 5 of dealing with this and it's been super painful, a lot more than the normal flare up. Since last night I've experienced intense pain and pressure at the site of the hemmorhoid and it just started bleeding excessively, like period like flow. I have no vaginal bleeding accompanied with it only rectal but it was not after a BM. Just out of the blue. Should I call my Dr at this point? I mean I've been treating it to this point but never had bleeding with it. I'm assuming it's bleeding due to the baby laying so low and all the pressure anyway but I didn't have these my first pregnancy either to know what's normal! Help!!
  • @kbernal2021 I have had hemmorhoids for most of this pregnancy but never bleeding that is heavy like period flow. If I experienced that I would call the doctor, maybe its ruptured or something and you wouldn't want it to get infected? I don't know a heck of a lot about hemmorhoids but thats just my 2 cents!
  • @supersara2 start now! And keep going! I'm also a teacher but have not been teaching while pregnant, ive just been focusing on my own practice, and have gained SO much appreciation for it during pregnancy. It will do nothing but help and make you feel amazing  :)
  • @kbernal2021 yeah call your OB. I had awful hemorrhoids last pregnancy. This time I take colace daily and have been drinking prune juice to combat the constipation.
  • Thanks @SmashJam and @cseley321. I called my OB and they said if the bleeding persisted at the flow it was for 30 minutes or more I would need to go to the ER to have it cottarized. I did a sitz bath and placed a cold wash cloth to help the bleeding stop and luckily it did in about 20 minutes. They also have me on colace now daily so here's to hoping this heals and can stay manageable in the meantime. My first pregnancy i didn't have them but got it from his birth. This is by far the worst I have ever dealt with it so the bleeding was so new, and seeing blood in pregnancy scared me so much. Thank you ladies for the help and advice!
  • @kbernal2021 glad the bleeding stopped. Just fyi, if you're constipated badly, colace alone may not cut it. I was on that plus fiber supplements and still couldn't go. Adding the prune juice is the only thing that has really helped, and even with that I am still super constipated. It's an awful side effect of pregnancy :(
  • Had my first middle of the night leg cramp of this pregnancy last night. Last pregnancy I got them a lot, sooo painful. I can't really eat too many bananas this time because fruit hasn't been good for my GD. Any other suggestions for potassium rich foods or other tricks?
  • High Blood Pressure Question -- Looking for advice.

I thought my chronic hypertension diagnosis was pretty straight forward, but after doing some research I have loads of anxiety about whether or not the diagnosis is accurate.

Background: Starting around 6 months prepregnancy I started having slightly high BP readings at doc appointments. Once I became pregnant I started having similar readings in the OB's office (140/78, 134/77, 130/82) and a couple that made me wonder if the machine was working (177/40). It was enough that my OB diagnosed me with Chronic Hypertension and referred me to MFM to monitor for IUGR and other complications. OB ran a whole mess of tests to get baseline labs - all were more or less normal - but he was concerned about protein in my urine. My protein were 2 above normal (so if 20 is normal I had 22). OB put me on 81mg aspirin and 3L of water/daily.

More recently I've been having readings that are much more normal (117/74, 114/78, 121/79) and I have had less protein in my urine.

Should I look for a second opinion about the chronic hypertension diagnosis? I'm currently 24+5 and I am really nervous about possible complications from having HBP, but also about having to deliver early for no true medical reason.

  • I bought my dog a bully stick today (he gets them as occasional treats) and my preggo paranoid brain decided to Google... Apparently pregnant women should not touch them because they are raw and carry diseases. I have been feeding them to my dog throughout my pregnancy. I always wash my hands afterwards but my husband doesn't, necessarily. And my dog does eat them around the floor and then lick me. Now I feel really icky and panicky. Anyone else know - or not know - about this?

I feel like I'm developing anxiety about what I should and shouldn't do and eat. Every few days something sends me spiralling...

  • @catapult32 I am in a similar situation with BP, except no protein so far. I think BPs tend to be a little lower in the second trimester, maybe that accounts for the more normal readings you have had recently?  If your BPs continue to be normal (or even slightly elevated as they were before), baby continues to grow well, and your labs continue to be good, having the diagnosis of HBP is not going to automatically lead to you having to deliver early.  They will probably monitor you more closely (growth scans, maybe non-stress tests), but they will make recommendations about delivery based on what they are seeing and what you are experiencing currently, not just based on your diagnosis.  My doc told me that if everything remains good I can go a week overdue like anyone else.
  • @texasmainer thanks for sharing. I never would have thought of bullies being a risk at all. I googled it, the artical I found said that 15% of the bullies In their test had bacteria with only the bacteria in some of them being harmful to humans. Only a small percentage of the treats tested were a risk plus you always wash your hands, so I imagine the chances of you actually doing any harm to yourself is not very likely at all. We probably come in contact with gross bacteria everyday from public bathrooms, people, and wherever else. You have the clean habit of washing your hands which is the best thing we all can do. Maybe just avoid the bullies from here on just to have peace of mind but it sounds like the risk is very minimal.
  • @catapult32 thinking of you.  My BP and heart rate were running high for me for a bit (no comment from Dr on protein) and I've been getting a lot more headaches than normal so I was starting to get worried, but at last check it was suddenly low (100/60) so probably not in the same boat.  You might want to try even more water though, I was sent to a cardiologist for a check with my BP/HR stuff and he said drink more water even when I told him I drink a gallon a day (3.8 L).
