Checking in in hopes of some help on what October BMB would do!

    Context:
I went to a high risk doc a few months ago b/c I had had a previous blood clot. She ran blood tests and they were all neg (no genetic conditions) so we'd put me on some low dose blood thinner, nbd, and I didn't need to see her. But she said she always tells any pregnant woman not to fly, at all.
Move to current doctor who says flying is NBD (I've got my compression socks already!) So I'm heading to Hawaii with my girls in a few weeks.

Now the fun starts: Work just chimed in like 30 minutes ago and now wants me to fly to NYC just before my Hawaii trip (read: PDX-->NYC-->Hawaii-->PDX in one week.) I'm freaking out that it's too much flying, so I called the high risk doc to get her thoughts and am waiting to hear back.

If she says no to NYC, what would you say to work? (Because I'm pretty sure 'sorry I can't fly but I'm flying to Hawaii' isn't going to cut it :) )
Your doctor tells all pregnant women to not fly, or just high risk pregnant women?

I think that unless you have a condition where flying would pose complications, flying is fine up until week 35 or something. Last pregnancy, I went on trips around week 17 (east coast from CA), week 22 (Europe), and week 28 (Hawaii). Flying during that last trip was a little uncomfortable, but no big deal. Compression socks were so key, though.

But to answer your question, if the doctor says you can't fly to New York, that's what you tell your boss. I probably wouldn't fly to Hawaii then, mostly because if your boss finds out you flew there but "couldn't" fly for work, it might not be worth the consequences.
  • @chopchop25 I’ve always been told by my docs that flying is perfectly fine during pregnancy as long as you’re not late in your third trimester, and aren’t high risk or having any complications. When I was pregnant with DS, I flew from NY to Madrid and also from
NY to PDX, and everything was totally fine. I did opt for a pat down at security instead of going through the full body scanners, but that’s a whole different question.

I’ll definitely be flying during this pregnancy too, and I’ve never heard of anyone saying all pregnant women shouldn’t fly.

  • @chopchop25 hard to answer bc I know nothing about your particular high risk/blood clotting situation, but unless there’s something about that that makes high altitude or prolonged sitting unusually dangerous I would say go on both trips.

I just did a good quick google search and blood clotting issues + pregnancy + flying apparently aren't a great combo.

  • Thanks for the thoughts ladies!
@Lisa3379 I think I remember her referring to all pregnant woman, but then again she is a high risk specialist so maybe she meant just her patients.
@pumpkinpancake That's a lot of flying (and sounds like fun trips!) It makes me more comfortable thinking about how much you flew! Good call on maybe going with the pat down if I go...
@DunkinDecaf That is where my brain is at, I just really have no clue if I am high risk. The doc told me all of this before we had the blood work back, and then basically told me I didn't need to see her and I could use my regular doc. That makes me think I'm not a high risk case, or does being on blood thinner alone to prevent another clot make it high risk? I'm not sure where the line is, if there is one!
@hellopartyof5 for sure - Oh gosh, I have also Googled away. It feels like it's becoming webmd - you have a cough? It's definitely the plague! The Google articles post blood clot (pregnant or not) make me never want to get on a plane again.
  • @chopchop25 for real man, that article was terrifying!

  • @kosmo86 me too!!! DH asked if I was sure I wouldn’t forget my baby sometime because I’m soooo forgetful! Way worse than normal. Btw I’ve always had this secret fear I would forget my baby sometime. I know it sounds funny and is completely irrational but please someone tell me I’m not the only one!!
  • @chopchop25 I would guess if she told you you don’t need to see her anymore that you’re not high risk, but I would call and ask both her and your normal OB just to be sure. Always good to know where you’re at, and I bet it would help you feel more confident about whichever choice you make.

  • My sister is pregnant with #2 and due in August.  She just found out she's having (another) girl!

I'm so excited for her, and for all the babies.  There will be 5 kids by Thanksgiving!

  • @lest12 so exciting for you and your sister to be pregnant at the same time!
  • Worst night ever. So apparently one of the side effects of tamiflu is nausea. You know what happens when an already queasy person takes tamiflu? It's not a good situation. Have to call my dr tomorrow and see if I should continue taking it. I just want to sleep.

  • Oh no @hellopartyof5! Hope you feel better soon!

@estellegetty - I know, it really is!  thank you :)  We had some overlap with our daughters, but only a few months.  This is so much more fun.  Our maternity leaves will overlap too, which is awesome.

  • @estellegetty - Good luck!  I totally understand telling them.  I told my boss really early last time because we had a lot of stuff going on in the office and it just felt like the right thing to do.

    Hope it goes well!

  • @lest12 my sis is due 5 mo before me and she just found out she’s having a girl too! We’re super close so it’s awesome to be PG at the same time even though we live so far away from each other.

My mom and Aunt were pregnant together with their last ones. My brother was born in Sept and aunt's twins born in Oct. The kids are inseperable.
  • @estellegetty I plan on telling my principal and assistant next week. I want them to know why I’ve been such as mess. Also, I’m getting observed next week and I want my AP to know what is going on. Luckily she just had a baby in July so I’m HOPING she’ll be sympathetic.
  • @estellegetty. You know when you are getting observed???? Mine is always random and it pretty much weekly or biweekly. I’ve been thinking about telling my principle too since my other teammate is pregnant and due in July. But I think I will wait until the 8 week ultrasound.
  • @hellopartyof5 , @kimberbeep and @acciocoffee ; I agree - telling people is a personal choice and each person is different in what they need during pregnancy.

**TW loss mentioned** My friend had a loss after she had already told people but she was ok with it because she wanted that support system. I had a loss in December. I hadn't told anyone I was pregnant and I was glad because people calling or asking me how I was would have made it worse for me. I needed to go through it privately with DH.  **TW end**

I feel different this time around - can't explain it but i have a good feeling! I still plan on holding off telling the news until the first trimester is over but I'm definitely excited to think about fun ways to share the news!

  • @acciocoffee I like the Easter egg ultrasound idea!  That's what I'm undecided about - whether to tell both our parents at Easter or tell them separately. I feel like I might want to give them their own moment. My parents and in-laws like each other a lot but they're not close. They've only met a handful of times. I'm not sure they'd be comfortable getting emotional in front of each other and I know they all would haha. But we'll all be together and it would be great timing. Decisions... haha

  • We tossed around the idea of telling my step son and my in-laws together, but I decided I wanted our son to have his own moment to react without feeling like he has to put on an act. He's 6, so I expect some questions too.

Edit: moving to 2/14 thread because I can’t read. Can I blame the lack of caffeine for this one?
  • So I told my family I tied my tubes after I had my second, and now this big surprise. I have no idea how to come clean.
