In this week's edition of Are We Moving to California? I have a question: anyone ever rent a car for 4-6 months? Or some other alternative? Thoughts? Advice?
I need to order roman shades for various rooms. I ordered samples online and picked one for the baby's room. I just priced it out and it will be $786 per window!! That is insane and a hard no. Has anyone had luck ordering roman shades online? Where!?
@doxiemoxie212 I had a 2 months trial in Florida and we rented a car there. But it was done via work, so I have no advice. :-) Did you ever talk to your H about moving?
@marcus7676 yes, and he is still leaning toward us at least temporarily moving to CA to live with my mom. He's gotten approval from his firm to work remotely/occasionally go into their silicon valley office for six months, so he's convinced this is the best option. I think the hospital situation is better, but nearly every other aspect of it freaks me out a little. My mom is looking into getting A/C, and that alleviates one aspect of the stress, but it all just feels really nebulous to me. I feel like there are too many scenarios (we move to CA actually temporarily; we move to CA temporarily but then stay; we move to the bay area temporarily but then end up moving to LA, etc.) for me to have solid plans, and it's hard for me to visualize how everything would work. Sigh.
Honestly, I think I'm most bummed that we would move in April because April-October are my fav months to be on the east coast (it's so humid, which I love, and it stays warm at night, etc., all of which are not true in CA). If baby girl were due in, say, January, and we were moving in November, I think I'd be 100% for it. So that tells me I'm also probably not thinking clearly about this.
But for now, I'm tackling one challenging aspect of it at a time -- today: how the eff would we deal with the need for a car? lol
@marcus7676 I haven't bought anything from them yet but I was looking at selectblinds.com for roman shades and it seems like everything is around or under $100/window. It's all custom sizes too.

@marcus7676 I had a lady come in to price plantation shutters for our upstairs (bought the house and they were on all windows downstairs) and they were around 5-700 a piece also DH was like no way.
Has has anyone else felt really anxious after going on the hospital labor and delivery tour? I went with a friend yesterday who is farther along, our hospital built a whole new women’s tower. It’s gorgeous but I think it brought back some trauma symptoms from my last birth. I know this time is going much smoother with a planned c section but I had several nightmares last night.
@doxiemoxie212 Could you do a car lease from the dealership? Or are those only a year or more?
@marcus7676 That is crazy!! I've never priced blinds...I had no idea they were that expensive.
AFM...is anyone else dealing with being too big for regular jeans but too small for maternity jeans? This morning, I put on my new maternity jeans and they just kept sliding down. I put my bella band over the waist...hopefully this will get me through the day. Any other suggestions for getting through this awkward period? I never thought I'd say this, but I hope this belly grows fast, just so my pants will stay up.
@dinodna3 I looked into car rental places, but it seemed like it was still $1000/month, which I'd prefer to not spend lol.
@LaceyBee522 my understanding is that leases are typically 3-5 years. What style mat pants did you buy? Mine are side panel, and I def could wear them non-pregnant without issue (uhh in fact, I probably will wear them because they're so comfortable).
@doxiemoxie212 - I have never rented that long, but working in insurance I've worked with a lot of rental car companies...just things you should probably consider...don't forget the cost of insurance...it may be worth discussing with your mom to see if you can be put on her auto insurance as a listed driver (assuming she has collision coverage) then you wouldn't need to purchase any additional/optional insurance from the rental company. Also check the contract for mileage restrictions- that can hit you hard.
Has anyone been told they have a marginal cord insertion? I had a growth scan last Thursday and the doctor(who I've never met) briefly pops in for 15 seconds saying everything looks good/normal. Mind you this is at a perinatal assessment center so they specialize in higher risk pregnancies.
I got the results/report on Mychart today and my cord insertion that was normal last time is now marginal. Google is freaking me out with talks of reduced blood flow, growth issues and possible retardation. I'm trying not to worry but can't help myself wonder for the next four weeks if my little one is being stunted or suffocating! When I emailed the provider back they apologized for not discussing and said we stay the course and recheck in 4 wks.
If anyone has had this, can you tell me if it's corrected itself, or if it can correct itself? What if any side effects did this have in little one? I did notice his growth was much less this scan compared to four weeks ago, though that may be normal.
@marcus7676 if my mom lived in San Francisco, I'd def do that, but the nearest ZipCar spot is not walkable from her house; it's like a 20 min drive. DH will mostly be WFH, so we won't need it every day, but I'm a little concerned as I get closer to my due date with having only one car because my mom/DH wouldn't really be able to leave the house without me, right? I guess ZipCar could theoretically work, like I could drive DH to the ZipCar place when he needs to go into the office, but he'll be working on east coast time, and his commute would be 90 min, so I'd have to get him there at like 4am? I don't want to get up at 4am lol. But it's more like, my mom probably will want to be able to continue to live her life, which would involve her driving 45+ min away to go to places she likes to go, and then what if I go into labor? Lol and we're just at home without a car? Yikes.
@doxiemoxie212 that makes sense. I think you'll definitely need access to a car, especially once the baby is there (DS had weight checks for the first two weeks almost every other day). Renting a car is probably the best, but not most cost effective, option, unfortunately.
@doxiemoxie212, A couple of other things to consider. People who lease sometimes want to get out of their lease early kind of like an apartment where you sublease (through the car company of course) and finish out their lease.
Another option would be to buy a used car that retains their value. You would be able to sell it when you no longer needed and hopefully get a good chunk of money back. That might actually be a cheaper option than renting a car for $1,000/month.
@Xtabbikatx I've been trying to look into the lease takeover thing, but so far online at least from what I've found it seems like options are limited (and mostly people trying to get out of their luxury car leases? lol), but that seems like the ideal situation so I'll keep stalking the sites.
@stephcat421 I don’t have any experience with marginal cord insertion but I just wanted to say I’m sorry that you had to find that out by reading your patient portal. If you feel like you have questions that your provider didn’t answer when you messaged, I definitely wouldn’t feel bad about making a phone call for more information! Fingers crossed for you girl. Maybe it was just as simple as one radiologist’s read on the scan being different than whoever read the previous ones.
@l2589 thank you for the kind words!. I did speak with the doctor and he told me we'd just keep an eye on growth every 4 wks. In the event growth rate drops below 10th percentile, I'd go weekly. (Thankfully he's 71st % currently) He also said I can't go back to normal cord insertion...which is a bummer.
Edit-autocorrect growth frogs to growth rate!@LaceyBee522 thanks girl lol!
@stephcat421 hugs Mama! I had a marginal cord insertion with DD (with some weird circumstances) and they pretty much just keep an eye on it. The growth scans are quick and they just make sure everything is going well, and it sounds like you LO is already doing fabulous! They may also recommend getting biophysical profile ultrasounds as things get closer. They check movement, amniotic fluid, and breathing stuff. I made it to 39 weeks with DD and probably would’ve kept going except she was breech and I had a scheduled section. FX everything continues to go well!

@sunshineandwhiskey thank you so much for your response! I'm so happy to hear you had a good outcome! It's refreshing to know you made it to 39 weeks too!
Part of my worry is being on blood thinners, they wanted me to be induced at 39 weeks and stop the baby aspirin at 36-37 wks and my lovenox injections 3 days prior to induction. With the additional uncertainty now due to marginal cord insertion and risk of delivering early I'm worried about being on blood thinners when I go into labor. I guess I shouldn't stress too much about it, trust my team of doctors and God.
@stephcat421 I don't have marginal cord insertion, but I am on blood thinners and baby aspirin. I feel like I'm not getting nearly enough information from my ob about it and have no idea about what will happen closer to delivery. I mean to be fair, I'll have a different doctor and be in a different state by then, but it does stress me out sometimes. Like you said, I just have to trust that the doctors know what they're doing.

@Amphibious22 yeah I know what you mean! I met along side the hemotologist and perinatologist at six wks and they glossed over it. I get that it's like 15 wks away but come on... We are planning everything else including what baby will wear home, why wouldn't I want to hear the game plan on getting off meds and induction process!
How have your injections been going? Are you doing good with the bruising?
@stephcat421@Amphibious22 I don't have a similar condition, but I do have a minor heart issue I take meds for that requires me to see MFM and will start to need growth scans at 30 weeks. I don't have anything helpful to add, but I too, have been surprised at the way the obgyn world works. I am used to going to my primary doctor or cardiologist and they take the reigns. They tell me. They ask me. Maybe it's just bc I'm a FTM, but I am always so thrown off walking out of there. If you aren't bleeding or cramping, everything is chalked up to a normal symptom and put on the wait and see list. Not that it's wrong, just totally different than any other doctor appointment I've ever experienced.
@marcus7676 We didn't buy them so I'm not sure about cost, but all the blinds in our home are from 3 day blinds and we love them. Maybe worth a look!
@LaceyBee522 I made the mistake of wearing maternity pants without a bellaband for the first time today and was literally holding my pants up 30 minutes later (like, not pulling them up, holding them up -- they seemed so promising straight out of the dryer!). My mom friends tell me they never grew out of the sag issue with some of their less expensive pants and recommend splurging on a pair of jeans and black pants that both "work." But I'm over here still resisting, and seriously considering ordering more bellabands.
We had our anatomy scan today and got almost a clean bill of health, but it seems our little boy (so weird to say...) has some extra fluid on one of his kidneys. My doctor assured us it self-corrects in about 90% of cases so we'll go back for a growth scan at 32 weeks, but it's also a soft marker for down syndrome and some other scary chromosomal defects. We're grateful so many other things checked out and determined not to worry until we need to, but would love to help support anyone else dealing with this uncertainty and/or hear any similar stories with positive outcomes!
@emiliadkay I’m not sure how close they are as indicators, but DD had cysts on her brain that resolved, and this baby girl also has them. I go back in a couple of weeks. The doctor assured me in both cases that it would most likely be fine, as she noticed no physical abnormalities.
@stephcat421 I haven't really had any bad bruising. I don't bruise easily though and I do ice my skin before and sometimes after. I was told that it helps and it's been working well for me. Do you have to switch to heparin in the third trimester? It was discussed for me but again I don't know if/when it'll happen.
@amys614 it's a little unnerving for sure. I got no information from my a/s other than everything looks good. I asked about my placenta placement and she was like oh I don't remember, the pictures are on my desk. Umm okay?

Curious if anyone gets splinter hemorrhages (those dark lines underneath the nail)? I always seem to have a small one here and there on the tips of random fingernails and I have even noticed them on toenails on occasion. I started noticing them back in 2015, but every health professional I have presented them to have told me they're nothing to worry about. Dr. Google really says otherwise, and last night I noticed quite a large one on the tip of my left index finger. I'm trying not to let health anxiety win at the moment but I don't think I'm being very successful.
I have had a few tests including an ANA and a test for antiphospholipid syndrome, but everything always comes back (thankfully) normal. Wish I could quit worrying. I think it's because I have never found someone else to say, "I get those too; it's no biggie."
@kfren Perhaps it's something hormonal related then? I started developing health anxiety back in 2015 so I was definitely symptom-spotting a lot. It's definitely nice to hear I'm not alone in getting them!
A little background as to why I started suffering from health anxiety in 2015:
It started with a twinge in my chest - must have pulled a muscle in my chest or something, but all I could think was that it was my heart. PCP put me on omeprazole thinking it was GERD but then I got gastritis (side effect?), confirmed via endoscopy, and it was all downhill from there. I couldn't eat, I was dry-heaving all the time, I felt weak and like I couldn't stay in the upright position for very long. They started testing me for things like lupus so when I started noticing the splinters hemorrhages I convinced myself that that was what I had. I even ended up in the ER after waking up in the middle of the night with a panic attack. It took a few months for things to start normalize, but by then the health anxiety had really taken ahold. These little black lines continue to pop up to this day and seem to suck me back to that dark place!
I took Nexium for a long time because of GERD, which actually went away with my first (viable) pregnancy. Prior to that though, I was also taking buspirone for anxiety. I stopped taking it, along with BC, a few months before TTC. I agree with you, this could be hormonal. Wouldn't surprise me a bit.
@Amphibious22 ditto on the bruising, minimal but ain't no one have time for icing lol! I do find rubbing undefined coconut oil on my stomach daily keeps/removes bruises quickly! I don't recall heparin being discussed, I'll finally have to ask that. I'd rather wait as long as possible for that switch as it carries higher risks (HIT) vs LMWH like lovenox(i use enoxaparin as the genetic). Ideally I'd just like to use enoxaparin until the end but, is it a longer lasting blood thinner which is why they want the switch?
@stephcat421@Amphibious22 lovenox is usually dosed every 24hrs, heparin every 8. Heparin has a much shorter half life. Also, heparin can be reversed with vitamin K if needed in an emergency.
@stephcat421 I'll have to try coconut oil. It would definitely save time! And I'm really bad about asking questions at Dr appointments. She mentioned switching to heparin at 30-32 weeks and I just nodded along. This is my first time on blood thinners so I just assume they know what they're talking about. Is that bad of me?
ETA @2589 thanks for the info. I guess that makes sense why I might switch later in case it needs to be reversed. Every 8 hours sounds horrible though.
