Hey everyone. My name is Kim. My husband (46)and I (31)have been ttc since July. We have a 4 1/2 year old together and I have one from a previous relationship. I had an iud after my youngest and had it taken out in July to ttc another one. After 3 months and no + and no af I went to my ob and had blood work done. She prescribed a medication to induce my af and then letrozole to help ovulate. She used that one because she seems to think I have PCOS. I have been using opk and got + but still no + pg test. I looked into our insurance and we have coverage for two smart cycle options for fertility treatments. I don’t know if we are ready for that option yet or not. We are both getting frustrated with it. I never had any issues with getting pg with my first two and now all of a sudden I am. Posted are what our options are for treatments. Not sure what the best way to go would be

@memommy86 Even with prior history of pregnancies, most every doctor will wait 12 months (6 months for known issues/AMA) for testing. What led to testing at 3 months after IUD removal? What testing was completed? What symptoms leads your doctor to think PCOS?
You went on letrozole after only 3 months TTC? FFS, lady.
Did the OB do any sort of bloodwork to go with that prescription? If you think you have fertility problems you need to go make an appointment with an RE. Your OB sounds like they have absolutely no idea what they are doing and that's not going to be particularly helpful to you. Without proper testing you have no idea what is actually the issue (if there is an issue at all) and throwing Femara at it won't help. You could have blocked up tubes, your H could be having sperm issues perhaps due to age... you really don't know. Go find an RE. Do the proper testing. Quit taking fertility drugs without proper testing and monitoring.

I had blood work done two different times checking for I don’t know what but lots of things. I was put on it because I had no periods the entire time with an iud and even after it was taken out. Never ovulated till after taking letrozole.
@memommy86 Just trying to help figure some things out, did you have the copper iud or the hormonal one? Did they happen to do an ultrasound as well? Do you know those results?
You seriously need to know what bloodwork you had done, what for, and what the results were. Don’t take things without knowing why you are taking it. No period after IUD removal and even none when it was in is very common. It takes some time for them to come back.

Maybe I’m missing something but I thought it could take up to 3 months for hormones from birth control to leave your system and that fertility options/ testing weren’t available until 12 months of unsuccessful TTC unless there are other pre-existing conditions to take into consideration?
I have a history of problems with cysts on my ovaries. I had the mirena iud. They did not do an ultrasound. I have been using opks since July. This is what I had done for blood work.

How far along were you in November when you found out? Then you went right back on IUD immediately after childbirth? I still think it is very dangerous of your doctor to put you on Femara with no known fertility issue. I'd be curious to know why she/he thinks you have PCOS. A history of ovarian cysts is not enough.

TL;DR: Fertility drugs should not be taken lightly or too soon. There is a reason there is a lifetime limit on cycles taking clomid and letrozole. Proceed to waiting & seeing until reproductive guidelines (typically 12 cycles) and/or testing. It’s okay to test sooner- but blindly taking letrozole is uncool.
A common misconception about the ovaries is that cysts are abnormal. In fact, at any given time, there can be multiple ‘normal’ cycsts present. The follicle that holds the egg is technically a cyst. After it ruptures, it becomes the corpus luteum cyst. If I didn’t have this medical knowledge, when I visited my RE & heard ‘cyst on left ovary, ovulation highly suspected” I puke have had no idea cysts can be normal & healthy. Albiet, PCOS is a very legitiment, and very serious diagnosis. History of cystic ovaries and lack of period do not typically constitute enough reasons to highly suspect PCOS. One thing is very clear- your desire for a baby. For that, I’m truly sorry your heart is longing- I’m so very sad I can’t heal so many women’s heart’s desires for an occupied uterus. That being said, if you have stuck with me this far, jumping to letrozole cycles can be harming your chances. If there is not a validated reason to use it, or if you find out it is a sperm issue and you have taken it previously, you may not be able to take it again once/if the sperm issue has improved (or whatever other issue like a blocked tube).
I was 5 weeks when I found out. I got another one in at my 6 week check up. I always had crazy afs and the abnormal hair growth plus the history of cysts. Af is still not normal anyplace between 26 and 35ish days the past few months.
@memommy86, having a variance in cycles in not necessarily abnormal. We have some similarities in cycle issues. Mine range normally from the same amount of days as you. I have facial hair and have had some ovarian cysts show in CT scans and previous ultrasounds. But, I do not have PCOS. My hormones we're all normal except FSH. And my ultrasounds when I was not getting periods were normal.
Skipping periods can be caused by something so simple as stress. It isn't concerning to skip one, it is when it is happening repeatedly that there is a concern.

Try 60 days and then 3 months and then 9 months and then 11 months and then 14 days and then 37 and then 28 ... that’s what women with PCOS deal with. Your af will not be normal until you’ve had time to adjust from a form of birth control called IUD. Sorry I keep posting. Just trying to help. You should stick around here. Oh and please read Taking Charge of Your Fertility. Throw all that you ‘learned’ out the window, make a commitment to yourself and your family to educate yourself about your reproductive health. You’ve had some great advice so far, I just had a point about misdiagnoses. When I was 17, I was told I had PCOS. The doctor did no testing whatsoever and just went based on my abnormal cycle and weight, even though lots of teenagers have weird cycles. Fast forward 16 years and I’m in a PCOS TTC group on Facebook. After reading everyone’s stories about diagnosis, I ask my current doctor. She agrees that it sounds like it was inaccurate and sends me for a consult. After all the testing, it turns out I don’t have it (although I do have a different, unrelated, fertility issue). Doctors aren’t always right. There are certain clinical criteria that have to be met in order to qualify for a PCOS diagnosis. If your doctor is just giving you that label without testing properly, something sounds wrong.

Especially if they are actively treating you for PCOS without testing properly. It’s one thing to throw out an iffy diagnosis, it’s another to start treatment without confirmation.

Jumping in to say not having a period while on mirena is very common. I was on Mirena for 9 years and didnt have a period for 8 of those years. After mirena, I got my period back right away but it was very different...it went down to 1 day of spotting. My OB didnt seem worried. **TW** It took 6 cycles to have a successful bfp after one loss and I consider myself extremely lucky. **TW**
As others have said, you need to consider getting a new OB and be more involved in/informed about your health.

My hormones we're all normal except FSH. And my ultrasounds when I was not getting periods were normal.
Skipping periods can be caused by something so simple as stress. It isn't concerning to skip one, it is when it is happening repeatedly that there is a concern.
