wasn't sure if I should put this in nursery inspo or here but it is a question. Is it ok to have drapes like to the floor in a baby's/kids room? I'm thinking the only hazard would be that they could pull on them and pull them down but we have other drapes around the house that they will have to be taught not to pull on.
We have really shallow window casings so I can't mount blinds on the inside and I hate blinds mounted on the outside.

@krashke the most I remember hearing about curtains is floor length could be an issue cause of them pulling on them etc. and not to use the pressure rods since they're not screwed into the walls. The big no no when it came to window treatments was pullcords on blinds. those need tucked way up high.

Ok, I apologize for not being super active, but I need input on DD’s room/sleeping situation.
right now, she’s across the hall from us. It’s really easy to hear her. DH wants to move her into the next room (it goes, her room, bathroom, new room). We would paint the walls and put money and time more into making her feel special, because the newborn won’t care what his/her room looks like. Currently that’s a guest room and has a full bed with a trundle. Our big girl bed options are:
1. She moves into the next room and we keep the bed in there. I somehow block off the big bed and she sleeps in the trundle.
2. Sleeps in trundle and we take apart the big bed. Not sure where to store it.
3. Sleeps in a toddler bed and we remove big bed.
4. Stays in her room with toddler bed, we ignore the issue and hope it goes away until baby 2 needs a room. Honestly our master is large enough to house a crib and changing table.
5. She just sleeps in the full bed with rails. That makes me nervous.
I dont know why I can’t make this decision!! DH is against taking apart the bed but I think he just doesn’t want to.

@pupsicle23 how old is DD? I personally would just put her in the big bed and get one of those rails for it. But I also never bothered with a toddler bed for my kids, just out of laziness lol.
We only used our toddler bed (converted from his crib) for maybe 4 or 5 months. DS2 rolled a lot (we always heard him hitting the side of the crib in his sleep), but we were able to move him to a regular twin bed around 2.5 years old, using a rail like this, and having the other side of the bed pushed against the wall. Would that be an option?

@pupsicle23 we skipped the toddler bed and went straight to a twin. mainly cause I didn't want to buy an extra bed. and we knew we wanted another baby. and didn't want him to get upset if we took the crib (transitioned to bed) back off of him. so we made a big deal about his big boy bed instead. if you're worried, maybe push it against the wall on one side and line it with rails on the other?

@krashke What @catlady1215 said, and also, how are you planning to use the nursery? My kid basically only sleeps in there, so I worry way more about "hazards" in the rest of the house than in his room. As long as you keep tiebacks or pull cords of out reach when the baby is in the crib, I don't think it's a problem, at least for a while. You can always reassess once your baby is pulling up, though again, that probably isn't a huge deal unless your baby will be unsupervised in there for any length of time (or for when he/she gets older and is no longer restricted by a crib).

If everyone could keep positive thoughts in their hearts for my dad this morning. He has his first scope this morning after his bladder cancer removal 4 months ago. It's notorious for coming back so I'm trying to mentally prepare myself for that (luckily it almost always comes back as the same kind, for him meaning non invasive and superficial) but it's tough to sit here and wait for news 300 miles away. Additionally it's a pretty painful procedure and he will be having every 3 months. They numb you, but even with the numbing, the scope and the camera are very large to stick up your urethra. He handles it like a champ, but I know it hurts him. Now I'm just stress blabbing.
Edit: I meant to put this in Randoms, but you know, frazzle brain over here...
I’d say full bed with rails too. DD (3) sleeps way better in a big bed than her toddler bed. I wish we would have went straight to a twin or full when we converted her.
@amys614 Thoughts and hoping everything goes smoothly!!
Ive been looking up when hubby can feel baby kick and everything I’ve read says 23weeks and beyond. We can feel it now at 18 weeks most nights like distinct pops in the same spot. OB confirmed what I was feeling was movement at our 16 week appointment because of where we felt it. I’m a FTM and fairly slim but not skinny. I’m curious if others felt this early from the outside and what it may be indicative of: placenta placement, where baby is lying, which direction etc?
I can’t tag any more people because this mobile app is terrible, but thanks for those who responded! I’m thinking we will try the full bed. I can’t put it against a wall bc it would either be against the window or cover a vent, which I think is a problem bc of the trundle, so rails it is. Here’s a question for experienced moms: do I use a full fitted sheet and still use her small blankets?
@pupsicle23 - We got a bedding set with sheets and a comforter. Both of my kids preferred at first to not use the top sheet and just use a fleece blanket they had used previously in their cribs (obviously not from birth, but once they were old enough for blankets). Slowly they started using the sheet and comforter as well. So we just pushed the sheet/comforter down if they didn't want to use it, but it was there as an option.

@mytinc That makes sense. So, it’s safe for her to use big blankets at this age. I feel like getting fun bedding could be good for building excitement, and then still give her the option. I really want that new Sesame Street bedding from land of nod, because Im a bad mom and she loves her some Elmo time, but no thank you to that price tag.
Thank you everyone for your thoughts and prayers. His scope came back clean! Next one in April. I'm insanely emotional today. All aboard crazy train! Choo chooooooo.

Not sure if this should go in baby showers or here but has anyone had or attended a virtual baby shower, like on Facebook? Did you think it was a good idea or stupid? I live in a different country than all of my family and due to weekly progesterone shots, I’m unable to go home. My mom is really disappointed she can’t throw me an in person baby shower but is interested in a virtual one.

@profmcgonagall I threw my sister a virtual shower. She lived in a Different state from my family, People understood and i invited our close family to a virtual shower. It worked out fine. Just make sure you have a clear registry preferably somewhere with cheap/ no shipping cost like amazon. Another idea is have the father attend the shower, there’s no rule that says only mothers can be showered
@profmcgonagall - I've never attended or been invited to a virtual shower, but it's something I'd find interesting and exciting as a guest. So I mean... guest perspective I don't think it would be weird or anything!
@profmcgonagall I have not attended one, but a girl I'm friends with on FB was tagged in some photos of one - they did it via google hangouts, I think, so they could videochat the whole time, and I think they waited until all the packages arrived where she was (somewhere in Europe) so she could open them on camera. They might have coordinated with her husband to make sure she had some fav foods with her. And I think a lot of the US people congregated together in person instead of everyone being virtual.
@profmcgonagall I would say it could be done well and not be weird. I would only invite the people that you think would have actually come to or bought a gift IRL, if you're inviting everyone on your friends list that would be tacky and gift grabby (not saying that you are but just in general).

Questions about sleeping...I am 18+2 and I am still comfortable sleeping on my right hip with my left knee up, right leg straight but I seem to be tossing and turning all night. I go from that to on my back to my left side probably 100 times a night. I read 20 weeks is really when you shouldn't sleep on your back anymore and there is mixed evidence on whether or not it actually makes a difference. When I switch from my back to my left side I get pretty bad pain in my left lower back/hip but it goes away once I am actually on my side.
When should I actually stop sleeping on my back? Is the left side actually better than the right? For those that got a pregnancy pillow, did you find it took over your bed? We have a queen and I am 5'9" and MH is 6'5" so I feel like we will have no space if I get a pillow.

@krashke it probably depends on the pillow you get. My husband bought me a pillow with my first pregnancy and that thing took over our entire bed (our bed is a queen). My poor husband had no room.
As for sleeping on your back they say 20 weeks and I’m to the point now (20.4) if I end up on my back (which I do wake up this way sometimes) the left side of my body goes numb.
@krashke with DD i never got a pregnancy pillow. I just used an extra pillow between my legs. To me, i just can't justify buying a huge pillow that i only use for 5 months lol, but that is just me. I know lots of people love love love them. As far as laying on your back, your body will tell you when it can't sleep like that anymore. Currently my legs go more numb when I lay on my left hip in a slightly sitting position. Just listen to your body.

@krashke MH just bought me a U-shaped pregnancy pillow. It's pretty large for our queen bed and H is a bigger guy but he said it hasn't bothered him having the pillow in our bed. I will also say that's it's made a pretty huge difference in sleep for me. I'm able to get comfy faster and even though I'm still moving from side to side throughout the night, I feel like it's less of a hassle to get situated on either side because I have the support from both sides of the pillow.
I agree with @harveyabbey77- the u shape pillow, which is what I have, defintely helps with getting situated in the middle of the night if you roll over!
@krashke I am having a miserable time sleeping already and have been for a few weeks now. Currently at 18+5. I am a stomach and side sleeper. Every now and then I find myself still waking up on my stomach/hip but not for long because I wake up uncomfortable. On my left side for too long, I wake up in pain from my sciatica. My poor right side is getting achy from me favoring it.
I have a pregnancy pillow which some nights helps and some nights I swear it wakes me up more, because it is more of a struggle to change positions with that thing as it's large and somewhat heavy, especially with a comforter over it. I get horrible pelvic pain when rolling over too, so sleep is just a comedy show at this point. I need to charge my fitbit and wear it again to track my sleep. I'd bet I'm up at least 10 times a night that I remember. Who knows how many times I'm restless.
They say left side is best due to blood flow to the baby, but any side is better than your back. Again, a blood flow thing. I do find that the pregnancy pillow is more comfortable to me if the long part is in front of me instead of behind me, but I'd bet behind you type positioning would eliminate you rolling to your back. Or maybe a U shaped one? Mine is more of a long C.
I've seen those blow up things that allow you to lay on your stomach that don't look comfortable for your back at all, but why haven't they made a mattress with an adjustable indent or something. Maybe the excess curvature of your spine from the weight of the belly would suck anyways, too.
Thank you all for the advice! I will def check with my dr at my next appointment which is 2/2.
Totally unrelated and maybe a long shot but does anyone know anything about Halal foods/what they can or cannot eat? Each couple brings a snack with a particular theme to Bradley class each week and we have protein this week. There is a Muslim couple that said they are Halal so no meat but I'm wondering if cheese would be ok? Google isn't being too helpful.
I think vegan would be safe so if anyone has suggestions for vegan protein snacks that would be appreciated too! I'm thinking trail mix but I want to bring a little something else as well.
