Re: Weekly Randoms Dec 26-31*

  • @laurelraido we just got a BJ's membership because I had a promo and I've already made the money for the fee back in coupons. I had compared the two a few years ago and at the time BJ's was better for two people because there seemed to be more options packaged in smaller portions (e.g., you could buy a three pack of 20oz tomato sauce vs a 50oz can of tomato sauce, or a four pack bag of frozen veggies vs a giant single bag of frozen veg). Not sure if that's changed. We also do Amazon prime subscribe and save for certain things, which is nice until you forget to postpone an order and end up with 2 cases each of paper towels and toilet paper and no where to store. :)

Additional caveats to my choice of BJ's: I like the premades at Costco better based on what other friends have shared with us, but that wasn't a high priority for me; our lame state doesn't allow sale of alcohol in most grocery stores, so Costco's wine selection and awesomely huge vodka bottles weren't a factor; and the lines for the Costco gas are ALWAYS long (even at odd hours) and the station is out of my way so I wasn't willing to consider using the membership for that

    Same!  :D
  • @rainafire77 DH and I are both firmly in the cloth diaper camp. It also helps that the in-laws used CD so I know when baby-sitting, they'll be onboard. We got a starter pack with liners, etc., plus bought some used ones off Facebook (which I still have to strip...). I think cost-wise, it'll be somewhat cheaper, but not a huge difference due to the water consumption. But what really got us was not having to throw out that much waste as with disposables...
when we were using disposables we were paying about $125/month
our water only increased a few dollars a month, our investment was about $350-400 (though could have been cheaper had I known about used from the beginning.

So my BFF is pregnant (yay!) and due in August, so our babies will be about 6 months apart. Here's my selfish, money-hungry question:

This will be her second child. She has already lent us a few things to use with our baby. Not a ton, but a few things that will definitely come in handy (e.g. breast pump, some toys). In the meantime, I've bought and been gifted most everything else and will be getting more with the shower and buying as we go. Previously, my plan was to give back the items she gave to us (they had talked about having more kids) and then sell the rest to help with finances while on mat leave. Now that she's pregnant, should I lend her the other stuff we got too? As the babies will be 6 months apart, a lot of items can be used by my LO and then given to her for use at the appropriate age.

Selfishly, I just want to use and sell (we're only having one child) as it will help us with money since I'll be off for a year. And I can get a better ROI if it's only used by one child. But I know I should share...

  • We're doing disposables.  Too lazy to do cloth diapering.

Ah good to know! I've heard from some that the cost savings are not extraordinary, but I wondered how often they were doing laundry, if they were using a service, what kind of diapers they bought (ie. cost).

I don’t think there should be any expectation that you give her all the stuff you have bought or been given. Being realistic though you don’t get tons of money back selling stuff (unless you are talking about high end items that keep resale value). So the karma of lending it to her might be more worthwhile.

I think realistically the only obligated things to share are what she gave you. The rest is up to you- their yours and I wouldn't think she would expect to be gifted things you bought or were  given. . She may/ maynot want them. I would wait and see.
  • Re: diapers
We use disposables with DS and will with this one also. Honestly I haven’t felt like diapers have been a huge expense, though I will say my in-laws randomly bring us boxes of them so maybe that has offset the cost more than I realize. I don’t think we go through more than a large box a month, and a box is only $35 unless I get a sale price. Considering how hard it is for me to keep up with laundry as it is I consider the convenience a big value in itself, but that’s me. Plus if I did cloth I can guarantee DH would not help with diapering and our parents who watch DS the most would not know what to do, so that would make it a bigger burden on me. I know some people love love love cloth and it works great for them and their lifestyles, but disposables work great for us and even on a really tight budget I haven’t felt that they are too expensive. I may eat my words once I have two in diapers though, lol. We’ll see.

Thanks ladies for the feedback! Sounds like I need to wander both stores to check brands and prices thoroughly. I did check Amazon's subscribe and save for diapers and it was definitely cheaper going that route for that product at least.

@meatballs37 I'm glad you had a chance to pop in and hopefully it made your day a little brighter to know how much we all care ♡

This. We use target’s brand and spend $25 a month for DD. I considered cloth as well... but the very little possible savings was not worth the convenience.   The extra cost in just detergent almost makes up for it. And, dealing with poop still freaks me out LOL.

  • I don't find the sizes at Costco for most things to be That bad (there of course is exceptions) but DH and I have always had a Costco membership. The savings for meat alone make up for it. We buy one meat (chicken, fish, pork loin, ground meat) about once every 2 weeks and portion it out and freeze it, we have a big deep freezer though. I also buy yogurt, produce, pasta sauce (comes in 4 regular sized jars), crackers, arrowroot cookies, peanut butter, granola bars, milk, gas and I'm sure other stuff there. We breastfed and cloth diapered but if we didn't I would use the Kirkland brand and that alone would be worth the cost of a membership

as for cloth diapers, we initially started for environmental reasons, (a sposie doesn't decompose for 25 years in a landfill) but quickly got wrapped up in all the prints and trying different brands to find out which ones we loved most. I can't imagine diapering my baby any other way. As for the cost of laundry, I haven't noticed a difference in my electric/water bill since potty training.

Exclusively breast fed baby's poop is water souluable so there is no extra work for the first 6 months in regards to poopy diapers. After that I would spray them off, wring them out and toss in the bag. On diaper wash day you just unzip the bag into the washer and away you go. If anyone has questions about cloth diapering (CD'ing) feel free to msg me.

  • I have been a Costco member since i was a kid lol! My dad used to shop there All the time, and when i moved to ny it was one of the stores i missed the most (the other was trader joes). I tried bj's and i found it very lacking. Luckily a Costco opened up here and i can buy all the things again,  even if it is a 90 minute drive,  i go like once a month and have the executive membership.  My annual  rebate pays for my next year's membership.  Kirkland diapers are my favorite.

@SunflowerMama428 glad everything was okay with the little one!

  • Re: Diapers

I have been stocking up on disposables for quite a while now. I think I’m good through size 4 for this new baby. I do Amazon Subscribe and Save. Diapers delivered directly to my house? Hells yeah!

    Re: Costco

I could literally walk to our Costco, but have yet to even walk into it! It’s been around us for about a year now. It isn’t even financially really 100% worth it just for the gas because the gas station right in front of it usually keeps it competitive. So...eh!

  • Should have added this to my previous post..oh well!

So I have had 3 dreams telling me this baby is a boy. I had one dream with DD telling me that baby was a girl. Any other team green have dreams of what sex their LO is going to be?
  • @BrittaniLC I'm also team Green but haven't had any dreams myself!
I was team green with DS and my friend had a dream that baby was a boy and we would name him Brennan. She told me about the dream but didn't tell me the details so she wouldn't sway the name. I made her tell me the name before we told her DS's name since I was so curious! We ended up having a boy and naming him super close to Brennan! Super weird!!!

She has had a dream this time around and says we are having a girl and she knows the name but we don't know what it is.

We aren't totally set on a boy or girl name yet so that will be interesting if baby is a girl and the name is close to her dream! If she is right She might need to start a psychic business lol
  • We're doing disposable diapers for convenience and because the thought of cleaning out poop from the diaper grosses me out. But if enough people here do cloth diapering a thread about where to buy/kinds to buy may be useful to share info!

I'm a FTM so H and I are a small family with a Costco membership that I first got off a Groupon deal (membership + free pie + free chicken + free pack of toilet paper), and now I'm an executive member for the cash back. I get TP, paper towels, and alcohol at Costco regularly, and then browse for whatever else we need. If we're having houseguests I'll get steaks, they've got raw chicken wings we can freeze, vitamins are cheap, good prosciutto and cheese is really cheap, etc. The only caveat is you have to buy the brands they have, so I wanted Triscuit crackers but had to settle for some whole grain crackers that are actually pretty good. I also get H golf balls there, I got some LED night lights, Brita filters, batteries....just random things. As for size, yeah, you get some giant packages of stuff, like the half-gallon jar of mayo I got the other day because we needed mayo, but that's smaller than the gallon size they also had! But most of the stuff won't go bad before you use it.

@kbrinks2 we're not actually team green, but I did have a dream before we found out that LO would be a girl. It was very strange, just a conversation about names that we should or shouldn't use. Would be curious to see if your friend's streak holds

Yes! Every time I have a dream about LO, it's a girl. It's especially funny as when I speak about the baby, I always use male pronouns, so people say I'm going to have a girl just because of that.

  • @BrittaniLC I know I'm not team green but I wanted a boy and I had a dream I had a girl and everything seem to point to a girl and that's what I'm having
  • Super random question, but I totally forgot to ask my doctor about it yesterday.

Is it safe to shovel snow? I know the risk of slips and falls are there but besides that, is that physical exertion ok?  My husband is a pilot and he’s out of town now until the 8th and we got a bunch of snow last night with more on the way and he’s telling me not to shovel. But that’s a long time to leave snow on the drive way and I don’t want to be THAT house on the street....

I would do it. Just don’t lift it all at once depending on the depth and bend at your knees not your waist. And if you have awesome neighbors once they see you start hopefully they come help!
  • @pandappanderson I would think it's like any physical activity - you run a risk of pulling something thanks to relaxin, and it will depend on what kind of shape you're in or what sort of physical activity your body is used to. I've shovelled snow myself, but it wasn't too much.

Maybe just take it slow and do a bit at a time? Or can you hire a kid from the neighbourhood to do it for you for $20 or something?
  • @smorzandoj @ldawngirl781

yeah, normally I wouldn’t be concerned and would just do it because I know my fitness level can handle it. But doctors are concerned about my blood pressure after yesterday’s appt so now I’m questioning everything I do. I compromised and just did the side walk and a path leading up to the house. Perhaps if I see a neighbour out later I’ll go and see if they will take pity on me
    Pregnancy Ticker
  • @pandappanderson then i definitely wouldn’t do it. My biggest fear is slipping and falling. But I normally shovel so I started doing it over the weekend while DS was playing in the snow and DH was really upset at me about it. If I went into labor too early and the baby needed NICU time cuz I tried to overdo it with snow shoveling I would feel awful. We have a neighborhood HOA Facebook where people offer to shovel for each other. Do you have any local groups where you could pay a local person a nominal amount to shovel it?

I used to shovel snow when pregnant all the time. My current dh won't allow me to,  but long as you go slow with light shovel fulls you should be fine.  You could always call the Dr.  And ask though.

My LO's head is measuring a week ahead (which is typical of babies in my family). I too, am scared for my vagina.
