Re: Weekly Randoms Dec 26-31*

  • Our mothers are pretty straight forward.  We were hoping they wouldn't both want to be called the same thing since they both have the same first name, but lucked out.  My mom will be Grandmom [her first name] and MIL will be Nanny [her first name/the same first name], which is what their mothers were called.  My father decided that he just wants our kid to call him by his firs

@ldawngirl781 DD has a bunch of grandparents & step grandparents. My parents have always been Grandma and Grandpa. Her dad's parents were "Grandma FN", "Grandpa FN" and even her step grandpa is "Grandpa FN". Now that I'm remarried and my in-laws have basically adopted DD as another grandchild, they are also "Grandma FN" (including Step-MIL) and "Grandpa FN". The only one who isn't a grandpa is my MIL's boyfriend who has granted DD permission to just call him by his first name.

Now with the LO, he'll just call everyone Grandma or Grandpa to their faces and refer to them as "Grandma Kathy" or "Grandpa Eddie" when discussing them in conversation. We all discussed grandparent nicknames and everyone agreed that would just be so darn confusing for a little kid with such a blended family! LOL

  • Chiming in on the grandparents names...my in-laws are going to be mommom and pop pop. They’ve always called them selves that in regards to our dogs/fur babies. It fits them well. My dad doesn’t care what he’s called. He said he likes pop pop though. My mother, on the other hand will not pick her title. She thinks they all sound too “old.” We started jokingly calling them Meemaw and Peepaw a year or so ago in regards to the dogs. I think it’s  going to stick for the baby too  :D . My mother says no way, she’s not from the South but if she doesn’t pick something I think that will be it lol.

Luckily both sides of our family already have grandchildren and thus, all grandparents have been named. All non-traditional names as well

Nonni and G for my parents and Grampoo for SOs Father. We’ll see what LO ends up calling them.

Edited to say, I would prefer more traditional names for grandparents, but honestly don’t care. If ours was the first grandchild on either side I would just let them choose what they want to be called.
  • Has anyone heard from @meatballs37?  I've been following the blog but wondered if anyone talked to her.  I hope she doesn't think we forgot about her.

Here's my opinion...and I'm usually in the minority in life so don't take offense.
August is barely pregnant...like maybe 8 weeks pregnant...ie..barely pregnant.
I held my breath from weeks 5-12 just for viability and didn't even think seriously about gender until week 16 . What is their rush??!! I don't get it.
    Again...maybe in minority.
Drive-bys pop up with sex predictions on every BMB, but luckily the regs shut it down quickly because they agree with what you just said. Plus the fact that it's BS.

  • So I went to urgent care last night to get tamaflu and ended up being rushed to L&D. we are fine now but my heart rate was too high and my vitals weren’t great so they thought the baby was in distress.

Nope he was fine. Of course he didn’t cooperate for the nst and they couldn’t get his heart rate on the Doppler so cue the nursing staff freaking out. Meanwhile he’s punching me in the vag so I’m trying to tell everyone he’s fine.

They brought in the ultrasound machine and yeah there he was sleeping perfectly fine. I’m glad he’s okay don’t get me wrong but I left with a prescription for tamaflu and paid a $100 copay instead of $20 and spent 3 hours longer than I would have at urgent care. I can’t wait til I’m not pregnant so I can just be a regular patient.
  • @SunflowerMama428 Sorry for the longer-than-expected visit just to get what you initially needed, but LOL at kicking you in the vag so he's fine.

In other news, I impulse-bought a ham last night at Costco because Costco is the kind of place where you can impulse-buy a ham.

And convo with H last night as I stepped out of the shower:
H: Did you take a bun out for your brat?
Me: Yeah, it's on the plate by the sink.
    H: No it's not.
    Me: GODDAMN DOG!
Haha sounds like my dog moe, always jumping up. But MOE is obsessed with ham...so it would've been ham gone...not the bun!

    Me too. I'm still snorting.
  • @eggplantface Now I want a brat lol...
  • Ham sounds so good right now. With sweet potatoes
  • Glad everything is ok @SunflowerMama428!

I impulse buy all kinds of stuff at Costco @eggplantface.  Never tried their hams though!

  • I swear my LO has been doing somersaults for the last hour; my belly hasn't stopped moving!  :)
  • @SunflowerMama428 Sorry about the long stay in L&D! Glad everything was okay though.
  • Grandparents:

MIL is Grandma. SFIL is grandpa to everyone else, but my girls call him Papa (like pawpaw) for some reason.

My birth mom is Nonna.   My adopted mom is Mimi. My stepmom is Gigi. My bio dad is Pops.
They see my side of the family once a year if we’re lucky and see his side frequently, so name confusion isn’t a big issue.
  • SunflowerMama428 Meanwhile he’s punching me in the vag so I’m trying to tell everyone he’s fine.
I'm sitting in the break room at work and burst out laughing reading that!

Here's a question, does anyone have thoughts on a Costco membership vs BJ's? I have both in my area and with upcoming baby number two we were looking into signing up for one of them.
  • @laurelraido I like Costco because I like the premade food and bakery stuff and I'm slightly addicted to the hot dogs, but my husband prefers BJs because they have a deli and he takes sandwiches to work most days.
We have a BJs membership because my parents have one to Costco
  • @laurelraido I'm a Costco member because there isn't a BJ's close to me, but others who have the choice base it on what each store carries. E.g. my coworker has BJ's because they carry more of the brands/goods he likes. See if you can find out what each one carries then choose which you prefer. I will say I also love Costco's pre-made food and baked goods, and the Kirkland brand stuff. I don't know if the pricing is the same between the two.

  • @laurelraido DH and I were just discussing this. This is our first baby, but he's convinced we need a Costco membership now. I'm not convinced it'll be useful for two people and a baby.
  • We don't have a BJs but I can tell you the wine section is Costco is awesome @laurelraido

Same. We had Costco membership for two people and it was a waste. We are good with normal grocery shopping.

You can use as many manufacturer coupons as you want at Bjs and you can’t do that at Costco. I honestly saved so much at BJs because.i sign up everyone in my life for coupons

This. We got a Costco membership on a Groupon last year and went once. For 99% of things, I don't find it to be cheaper, I despise the way the stores are set up and I just get frustrated trying to find things. Plus, half the time they don't have what we need/want in regards to certain products or brands.

We don't have a BJs though, so can't speak to that.
  • I think I remember someone saying that they crunched the numbers on diapers and it's cheaper to do Amazon Subscribe and Save than Costco, if that's what you're thinking of when you're looking at a membership.

  • Speaking of diapers, we're still debating on doing cloth vs disposable. We received newborn and size 1 disposables and wanted to use them at night anyway rather than cloth (neither one of us feels like dealing with a dirty cloth diaper at midnight) but we're still on the fence. What are you guys doing?

We’re on the fence too. We got a bunch of newborn and small disposable diapers at our shower that we will use to ease into the whole parenting thing. But we still think that cloth is the way to go. Ugh. I don’t know. Haha.

  • We have a Costco membership for the samples and the hotdogs...
    DD - 4.15.16
  • @rainafire77 DH and I are both firmly in the cloth diaper camp. It also helps that the in-laws used CD so I know when baby-sitting, they'll be onboard. We got a starter pack with liners, etc., plus bought some used ones off Facebook (which I still have to strip...). I think cost-wise, it'll be somewhat cheaper, but not a huge difference due to the water consumption. But what really got us was not having to throw out that much waste as with disposables...
  • My dad is obsessed with Costco (though he is not frugal in any way and is single so I’m not sure specifically why he loves it so much) and he got us a membership for Christmas. I’m not sure what if anything we can save on going there, considering I already do most of my groceries at Aldi and can’t imagine getting cheaper than that, but I want to make good use of the membership since we have it now. DH and I will probably do a scouting mission here soon to see what we might use Costco for. Interested to know what other small families use it for too.

  • We have Costco because it's closer, and the gas prices savings basically pays for my membership (I commute 2hrs/day). Plus their hot dogs and pizza are SO good.

We use cloth i like it. They are super cute, we save a ton of money (which is why we made the switch), most of the daycares in this area will do cloth, we generate so much laundry anyways that an extra load of laundry is not noticed. We bought a ton of diapers and a huge washer so I only do diaper laundry once maybe twice a week.
The website fluff university is a great resource.

As a FTM, I'm a bit intimidated by the idea of cloth diapers and DH has absolutely no experience with diapers of any type. We have a decent supply of size 1s in disposable, so we'll likely stick to disposable. It's the only type of diaper I have had any experience with.
