Oh one of the first poops at home is always the funnest. When DD came home after 2 weeks in the NICU, DH wasn't prepared for her to poop while changing the diaper. It shot out like a cannon and went everywhere. And it was in our room so on beige carpet. I was in the adjacent bathroom using it and saw it all happen. I couldn't stop laughing. I was literally holding my stomach together. DH was so mad from the poo and me laughing that he threatened to send her back to the NICU and stormed out of the room the second I could get up to hold her.
My husband got shit cannoned square in the chest. He was kneeling at the pack and play, changing our daughter (who was on the top infant mattress). He had the diaper off and she unloaded. It went through the mesh side of the PNP all over him. Luckily I got to witness it and laughed my ass off.
Cleaning shit out of mesh, however, is no laughing matter.
Open all the diapering stuff BEFORE the baby comes home!! Like @Ceridwen77 and @suchaglencoco we had a hilarious first time story where my husband was peed on when we first got home. We walked in the door and we needed to change his diaper. We got him undressed and started to grab the wipes and diapers and while they were sitting out all pretty, the packaging wasn't opened. Before I had a chance to rip them open, DS peed all over DH and I died laughing!!
Oh man explosive diapers..... I dealt with way too many of those! DD seriously had at least 1 a day. It didn't matter what brand of diaper. She just shit with explosive force. I learned the best way to clean the lovely mustard colored breastfed poop out of clothes was with liquid handsoap, a toothbrush, and elbow grease. Don't let that shit dry though!
DD also has reflux, so she had projectile spit up a few times. It's terrifying! I panicked and called the Dr immediately. Apparently it can be normal as long as baby is gaining weight and had enough wet and poopy diapers. It can also be a sign of a very serious condition called pyloric stenosis. DD was fine but cleaning up that much spit up breast milk was not fun. Her swing literally had a puddle.
And the best way not to lose tiny baby socks in the washer and dryer is with a lingerie bag. Some machines can suck them away! A friend's drain got clogged from lost sucked away baby socks.
Also, don’t stress about what “they say” (books, the internet, other people). Do what works for you and your baby (as long as you are not doing blantently unsafe things).
Amen to this, 1,00I0 times over!

Another diaper issue- DS is allergic to those Luvs. My mom had some and he always came home with a red butt until I made her throw them out. That was exactly why I didn't want to stock up on tons of diapers before they came. Plus certain diapers fit kids differently. Huggies do not work on my kids but Target brand and Pampers work really well. I know you can exchange and return diapers, but who wants that hassle with a newborn?

Yes, every baby is different. We found we liked the diapers from Aldi the best. They're the most affordable diapers we could find without crazy couponing and they work really well. We use Target brand for overnight diapers since she turned about 15 months.
Also if you have somewhere to go with more than like a fifteen minute drive with a newborn and want to have a certain outfit on for it, wait until you get there to put it on LO. I had a couple of unfortunate instances of diaper blowouts or puke all over in the car seat. I was so thankful DS was born in June with all the baby puke. I could just wear nursing tanks around the house so all I had to do was wipe down my arms with a washcloth and not always have to change my shirt.
also I think it was mentioned long ago on a thread but be prepared to have your boobs start squirting milk when you have sex. I think I wore a bra and breast pads for like 6-8 months after DS was born from leakage!
I forgot to include this in my previous post about pumping tips. For the really stubborn clogged ducts, pumping while kneeling down on all fours for 5-10 minutes worked every time!
Peeing a little when I sneeze or cough... something I use to laugh at when my mom friends warned me it would happen.
this is happening to me now. Is this a pregnancy thing or a possibly forever thing?
If it becomes an issue for you, you can see a physical therapist who specializes in pelvic floor care so won’t be a forever thing. (It’s more than just kegals) I haven’t personally had this issue but for a couple times since getting pregnant with J, so I’m going off of testimony of other moms I know. Also, fun fact, France pays to keep your pelvic floor toned after childbirth because they value a woman’s quality of life after becoming a mother. I’m not 100% for certain, but I think they are the only country that makes that routine care for the postpartum period.
Pelvic floor issues can start in pregnancy and can vary from very mild (a little pee while sneezing) to quite severe (multiple organ prolapse, surgery, life long restrictions). Doing pelvic floor exercises now (like kegels) can help, but if things get bad, a specialist is a must. Certain birth practices can increase your risk for pelvic floor issues as well.
@jenbabymama it started during my first pregnancy and continued into this one. It’s definitely more of an issue now that I’m pregnant again...fun times lol
Eta how could I forget about watching my husband get hit with shooting poop! Easily one of the funniest memories lol
Blow our diapers are really something to deal with and seem almost guaranteed to happen if you like an outfit. Definitely change when you get there and if it’s a special occasion bring a second nice backup outfit.
@clee5711 yes a backup outfit is a must! (does anyone watch the office? Remember when Jim forgets the other dress and the kid gets baptized in his t shirt!!)
I cloth diaper and have noticed that diaper covers prevent blowouts. If I’m out and about, I use disposable with a cloth diaper cover. For my kids, it prevents the blowouts! Of course, every baby is different in their ability to poop out:-)

Yep the entire time we were cloth diaper and I did not have a single blowout, unless we were using a disposable diaper. We probably just got lucky, and I am willing to admit that possibility LOL
I know everyone is saying you can exchange diapers but make sure you write a sticky note on them saying where they’re from. I’m too experienced on places not taking them back and not remembering where I bought them from.

Yep! We cloth diapered too. I can't think of a diaper blow out. Could be luck, or it could be the diapers. Time will tell!
Hi! So my kid never took to breastfeeding and I quit trying at around 2 months, but I have yet to have a blowout! He's 19 months and we have not even had one blow out. My niece on the other hand, was exclusively breastfed, and I watch her once a week and she had blowouts every single time I watched her. So, formula poops are usually more solid. FYI. And I agree with Aldi diapers, also if you formula feed, their formula is the exact same ingredients as similac I believe and very reasonably priced!!! Actually, I'm all for all Aldi baby products, their wipes and baby food pouches are very good too!
@jenbabymama, After my first pregnancy, it went almost totally away. The only things I could no longer do without peeing were jumping rope or jumping on a trampoline. Trying to jump rope literally makes pee run all the way down my legs.
Poop story: our daughter inhaled meconium and her lungs had to be suctioned multiple times her first 24 hours. That first day, she had a pretty nasty gurgle cough that scared DH and I to death. Our first night home, the three of us were all asleep, when we heard the loudest, gurgliest, coughing sound. We both shot out of bed to examine baby for a blocked airway or a puddle of spit up. After several minutes of staring at a content sleeping newborn, we both realized that the noise that woke us both from our slumber was POOP shorting out of her tiny body!
1) Some babies you have to wake to feed. 2) That first night home was the TOUGHEST for us, out of all the nights. Switch off with your partner to grab some sleep and if you drink coffee, get a pot that you can program ahead of time. 3) Put the new diaper under the current diaper when doing a diaper change. Don't even bother with those super cute changing pad covers. 4) Freemies! If you pump, they just slip inside your shirt (goodbye ugly nursing friendly work shirts) and they work really well. Easy to clean (another vote for the sanitary wipes and tossing in the fridge).
1 - after waking my son for the first two weeks to eat every couple hours at night, I found out you only have to wake them until they are back at birth weight. Our son was back at birth weight the day after we left the hospital, but we created a bad schedule of waking him twice a night. 2 - Apparently babies are still learning to breath a couple days after birth and them holding their breath until they "remember" to breath again is normal. This totally freaked us out our first night home and we almost called 911, only to find out from the Dr the next day that it is normal. 3 - Buy clearance/used/cheap onesies and just throw them out after a blow out! Not worth cleaning IMO. 4 - Pull the onesie down after a blow out instead of pulling over the head.
@heelsidehero All the yes to pulling the onesie DOWN after a blowout. It took me awhile before I realized that the way the shoulders in them are made are to allow for this to happen and it's SO much easier!

yes! I learned this after many blowouts of NOT knowing!

My mom was mind-blown when I demonstrated this with my first. "Thirty years! Thirty years and I never knew that!"
Also with blowouts, if there is a kitchen sink handy, take advantage with the hose. We had to use it a couple of times with DD. Then when all calms down, thoroughly disinfect the sink.
Sink baths will also be your friend when your two year old has a blowout because he pooped so much it ran out of the back and while he was playing at his train table got on the wall....not talking from an experience last week or anything...
Oh, you may also need to change your diet during BF to help baby's digestion. DS is still lactose intolerant and hasn't grown out if it and I had to stop eating dairy and when we switched to formula he needed the sensitive kind and needs lactose free milk to this day. I know other moms have had to make similar diet changes or cut out spicy foods, etc.
