Re: Weekly Questions 12/11

  • Last week, we had a viability scan at 11+3. Baby was moving like crazy, strong heart beat, we were thrilled. This morning, my ob called me personally to tell me that the u/s showed an increased nuchal translucency and asked that I go for the Counsyl testing. We were not planning on any additional testing up until this point. She explained that it could be a marker for a chromosomal defect or it could be nothing. I'm terrified to say the least. Our results will come back right before Christmas. If the result is low risk, than a cardiac scan along with anatomy at 20 weeks.

Anyone have an abnormal marker on their u/s? What was the result? I'm trying so hard to stay away from google...

  • @courtyowl427 with DD they found a chromosomal marker for down syndrome during the NT scan.  We had to get a panel of blood taken and we met with a genetic counselor before our 20 week anatomy scan.  They also performed a level 2 scan instead of the "normal" anatomy scan.  Our blood panel came back low risk (like <.001%) and our anatomy scan was clear (well for that at least haha).  When we met with the counselor, they said at least a third of all NT scans show some type of marker that is a false positive.  Try to stay positive and definitely stay away from google! • My SIL is coming to visit next week, and wants to treat me to a massage. This sounds amazing right now, but obviously I want a therapist trained in prenatal massage, which they do offer. But we haven't told SIL about the pregnancy yet, and were hoping to do so in person. Do you think I should wait until she books the appointments, then call myself to request an appointment change? Would it be that big of a deal at 14w to get a swedish massage instead? This is why I hate keeping secrets.

  • @icecubeinthedesert I've had a few massages since becoming pregnant, all prenatal, but I will say......................they're the same as non-prenatal if you can still comfortably lay on your stomach or back. I think maaaaybe they apply less pressure on the lower back in prenatal? But honestly if you just tell them you want a relaxing massage (as opposed to sports/deep tissue) I cannot imagine anything could go wrong. My OBGYN was completely fine with massage at any point in pregnancy.

That said, once you tell the place you're pregnant, they might refuse to give you a massage if they're not trained in prenatal purely for liability reasons. So, maybe call anonymously and find out theoretically if they have any massage therapists trained in prenatal? And ask what their names are? And then find out if that's who you're booked with? lol
  • Guys, what does movement feel like? I know people say flutters or gas but like............. how do you end up realizing it's movement and not gas?
  • @icecubeinthedesert - From what I know, Swedish massages aren't preggo approved because of all of the extra pressure they have.  Assuming that you'll be in different rooms it is pretty easy to just tell the staff.  Most places I have been you fill out essentially an intake form and preg questions are usually on there...you could even write a note on there that your sil doesn't know so ask them to not say anything.  But yes, there is no difference other than them being more gentle and avoiding certain pressure points.  I know hot stone massages are a no go as well due to the heat on pressure points.
  • @doxiemoxie212 It is hard to explain!  Imagine what it would feel like if a fish was swimming around in there.  It is this totally different feeling, and you know it when it happens because it is a feeling like nothing you've experienced.  I felt my first movement around 18 weeks.  In the beginning, the flutter will come and go pretty quickly, leaving you doubting yourself if you felt anything at all.
  • @doxiemoxie212 for me, if I feel a bubble or 2 I chalk it up to “could be gas”.. usually when I’m sure it’s baby moving, I feel at least 5,6,7 little taps or bubbles in the same general area in quick succession.

  • Good luck @courtyowl427.  Hopefully it's a false positive.

@doxiemoxie212 it is hard to explain, and I feel like I dismissed a lot of DD's early movement as gas.  Over time you will start to know when it's your LO and when it's your lunch.  The real fun comes around 24-26 weeks when other people can feel the movements too.  Seeing MH's face light up when he felt DD was amazing (worth all the pregnancy symptoms).

  • @buffalove1211 @lisa2589 @jsl82 yeah, I feel some flutter type things, but it never lasts more than a few seconds, and so then I try to lay really still and hold my breath lol, but my pulse point is sooo strong there I just end up feeling like well it's definitely just my pulse or gas. I'm curious when I'll feel something and actually be confident it's baby moving. I feel like I probably won't feel confident it's baby until DH can feel it too.
  • @sunshineandwhiskey Thanks for your response. I’m trying so hard to stay hopeful. This will be the longest 10 days of my life. I had such an easy pregnancy the first time, this is such a shock. I have been googling, which I know is a "no-no" but it has actually been a little reassuring. There is a large number of people with a high NT that have had beautiful and healthy babies!

  • @doxiemoxie212 By the time you can feel movement on the outside, you will know without a doubt that its baby movement on the inside! I, personally, don't think it felt anything like gas.  It is this foreign feeling that as soon as you feel it, you just know.
  • @doxiemoxie212 it literally feels like a living thing moving around inside of you. Like a wiggly squiggly worm moving all over. The early movements are harder to identify but I distinctly remember feeling DS move and knowing it was definitely him bc I'd never experienced anything like it. As they get bigger you can pinpoint if it's a foot or hand as it felt different to me. DS liked to keep his toes right up in my ribs, oy. It's hard to explain, but there will be a point where there's no denying it's baby!
  • @doxiemoxie212 I did think it was gas for the first couple weeks. I think as it got stronger I started to suspect it was baby. I also realized I was feeling it in a slightly different location than where I normally feel gas. To me it did feel like flutters/gas.
  • @courtyowl427 I know SOOO many people that got false positives on these scans.  I know it’s easier said than done, but try not to freak out.  FWIW I had the Counsyl testing and it only took a week to get the results.  FX for good news!
  • @courtyowl427 Fingers crossed for you!  I've had a few issues this pregnancy and I was not strong enough to stay away from Dr. Google and worried myself further for no good reason.  Try and avoid it!

I have two questions!  First off, how slowly are your bills coming in the mail (if you still have a deductible to pay)?  Out of all the appts I've had (and there have been a lot due to some complications) the only bill I've received is from the ultrasound place from like week 9 - now on week 14.  I see all the claims adding up on the ins. website that shows I owe $ but nothing else is coming.  I've heard stories about medical bills going to collection pretty quickly and I'm just worried about that I guess.

Secondly, I'm due in June (obviously) and I'm going to be a bridesmaid for my best friend in a wedding in September in Canada.  Any STMs have any advice on whether or not this will be manageable?  It will be either a 8hr + drive or a 1hr plane rideand baby will be 3+ mos.  My parents live there and I'm mostly concerned about BFing and/or leaving the baby so soon (I will leave her with my parents for the night or maybe ask them to stay at the venue hotel with her, not sure?).  Any tips or advice would be appreciated.

  • *lurking*

@doxiemoxie212 I’m a first-timer and to me it initially felt like when your eyelid twitches but low down in my abdomen. It wasn’t a “wow I’ve never experienced this sensation before” feeling at all. Just felt like a little twitch.

  • @becca_123 I'm sure you'll get the bills if you end up owing money. They are pretty good at collecting their money if it's due! As long as they have your current address.

For the wedding, I was MOH for my sister's wedding in April after my DS was born in Dec, so he was almost 4 months old. I told my sister I needed to bring him because, honestly, at that age (and if you're breastfeeding) it would be hard to be away from them overnight. They are still eating pretty often, every few hours or so, so if you're not able to feed on demand, you'll need a place to pump pretty often. And a supply to give to whoever is watching your baby. Aside from feeding though, I think emotionally it might be hard to be away overnight. I'd recommend trying to set up whoever is watching baby to be as close to the wedding venue as possible to you. That way you can steal away and BF if you need to, or if you just want to make sure everything is ok. Or if you're feeling fine, you can enjoy yourself knowing baby is close by! Just my $0.02 :)
  • @becca_123 Traveling is the easiest at that age since they mostly sleep. If you fly, I recommend baby wearing through the airport. I agree with @TravelingCouple to try and have your parents stay at the hotel to watch the baby when you are at the wedding. I loathed pumping, so I’d rather just slip away for 15-20 mins and feed the baby rather than find a place to pump. I know emotionally I couldn’t handle being away from my baby overnight at that age and it’s easier to enjoy yourself knowing the baby is just sleeping in the same hotel.

  • @becca_123 I was in weddings 12 hours away  3ish month’s Post partum with both my boys. The first one DH wasn’t with me, so my mom came and we shared a hotel room. I pumped whenever I could and also stole away to nurse. I wasn’t able to stay out super late but at that point I didn’t want to.

After DS2 my DH was able to come so he was in charge of the boys during the wedding but after that everyone took turns. Again didn’t stay and party super late but also was exhausted.

  • On the movement question, I had an anterior placenta with DD so it took forever to feel anything. I have an anterior placenta again as well. I think it's helpful to know if this is the case with your pregnancy so you don't stress bc everyone else is feeling movement and you haven't yet.
  • @katie121209 I was told I have a posterior placenta at my NT scan, but in retrospect I wonder if she understood me correctly (English was the tech's second language) because the baby was also posterior so maybe she was just telling me the position of the baby...
  • @becca_123 With DD, we had a wedding when she was 10 weeks old and a another one when she was 3 months old.  Both were a 1 hour plane ride away.  The first time, we left her alone with MIL for 1 night.  I found a place to pump at wedding, and I left pumped milk with MIL.  The second time, we had my mom fly up with us because we were going to be gone for 3 nights.  Flying was super easy.  For us, she was easiest to fly with the younger she was, and it has only gotten harder and harder as she got older!  An 8 hour drive sounds miserable!  I breast fed as usual, pumped, and had no issue with security when I brought a cooler of pumped milk. Everyone is different, but we tend to err on the side of needing to keep living our life.  We trust my mom and MIL completely, so although I missed DD (and cried when saying good bye for that 1 night away), I knew she was in perfectly good hands... and DH and I had a great night.

@doxiemoxie212 Who knows.  I asked my tech about the position of my placenta, and her answer was something along the lines of telling me it was irrelevant because it's going to move dramatically from this point forward.  Not exactly an answer to my question at all.
  • I'm not sure why they don't talk placentas with you. Mine didn't either but I was really happy when I saw the US tech write "posterior" on the screen. Apparently though she was just taking a posterior view bc when I looked online on my chart, the ultrasound report said anterior placenta. I know it's not a big deal but I was disappointed. Longer to feel movement!

@TravelingCouple @dinodna3 @fantasticmrsfox. Thank you all for your input - I was nervous that it might be difficult but it seems it can be done - it sounds like the best plan is to have my mom nearby, for sure.  DH will be attending as well so we can take turns, except for when to BF.

ETA - and thank you @buffalove1211 as well - I'm glad I'm not the only one worried about leaving LO for a night when it seems so early.  I will just have to see how I feel about pumping when the time comes.
  • do your doctors actually call your appts '12 week' and '16 week' appts and you have to be there that week?

I've seen it so much on here that I'm just curious. my office never associates your apt with a certain week. if your 1st apt was wk 9.. she'll see you in 4 weeks, 13 weeks. first apt was wk 10, she'll see you at 14 weeks. she just does every 4 weeks till its time to go sooner.

  • @catlady1215 mine calls it 12 week appointment, 16 week, 20 week, etc., and ideally she'd like to see me then, but she's super flexible (hence combining 16 and 20 week into an 18 week), so I doubt it actually matters.
  • @catlady1215 My office doesn't associate it with a particular week, either--my OB just seems me every 4 weeks (and then closer together later). I think it just frequently happens to land on 12, 16, etc., because many offices see pregnant women for the first time at about 8 weeks (that's my office's policy).

  • @catlady1215 Same as MoonOverGoldsboro.  The office doesn't call them "12 weeks" "16 weeks".  They just schedule them 4 weeks apart.  Compared to the anticipation for the NT and anatomy scan, my OB appointments are incredibly anti climatic.
  • Ladies I thought I would update you all regarding my biopsy from last week. It came back as early melanoma :/ they said it's very treatable and I'm having surgery in two weeks to do a much bigger incision :( I'm fairly young and pale and frankly in shock that it came back with this diagnosis. Argh and I can't even stress drink lol.
  • @katie121209 I'm glad you found it early! I'm sure that can be scary but it seems like you're in good hands! Best of luck!
  • @katie121209 That is so scary, but it's so good you caught it early. I'm sure the whole June BMB will send you good vibes for your surgery! I wish there was something to do about the stress drinking...I've been in desperate need of a cocktail myself.  :|
