  • @wildtot it's such bullshit, pardon my language. It's a gross innappropriate joke going back to days when episiotomies were the norm, and I'm sure before that, as long as men have delivered babies for women. And it doesn't even tighten the vaginal canal, that's impossible without surgery and is just not how the body heals. It's disgusting and inappropriate and part of the patriarchal normity that men would even be THINKING about their sexual pleasure while a woman is spread out, splayed open and vulnerable, and often in no position to advocate for herself.

Sorry for my vehemence. As an English major with a minor in Gender Studies (and a flaming feminist), I've seen "The Husband Stitch" pop up from time to time in my literature studies for years, and that it even exists as a joke makes me see red. I'm glad with all the conversations coming up lately about consent that it's a topic that's being discussed, as it's mainly been handled in women's literature and in hushed conversations between women before this or as jokes between men. It's not funny, it should be talked about, and it needs to stop.
I love your vehemence! The whole idea is so appalling i can’t even deal.

In the comment section of the scary mommy article there are literally dozens of people claiming this happened to them or that their doctor either mentioned it or claimed to have done it. I 100% thought it was just an old wives tale like you said above, and I don’t necessarily trust info from a mommy blog comment section, but there are a LOT of them to all be making it up.  If you’re on Facebook it’ll probably pop up in your feed now that you’ve talked about it here, because of their creepy spy algorithms.

i don’t know what to think. Maybe the commenters just think this happened because they heard the stories and then sex was painful after they healed.

  • @christycalifornia @julesf817 gosh i really hope it’s all a joke - a horrible one nonetheless. Just the thought of doctors (possibly) thinking of the mans pleasure at the time they just gave birth is ridiculous! I can maybe see this as a old medical trend or like julesf817 said just ladies having a bad experience with their stitches. I really hope it’s not true or fewer cases these days.
  • @wildtot @julesf817 with the reduced rate of episiotomies nowadays it's definitely not the norm. But in the 50's when women were sedated for pregnancy and episiotomies were the medical breakthrough of the time, from what I understand doctors would often ask men if they wanted an extra stitch put in. Now it's more of a wink wink nudge nudge can you put in an extra stitch for me ha ha ha joke, which makes me equally angry, because it's not a joking matter.

This story was one of the more impactful that  I read on it, and it's making it's rounds again because of the renewed interest today in gender roles and consent. It's short, (short story fiction) but it really shook me, because of its raw, vulnerable relatability, if you're interested. https://granta.com/the-husband-stitch/

And here's some commentary on the story I found very insightful: https://www.google.com/amp/s/electricliterature.com/amp/p/690899157394
