Since most are now scheduling their test and a few of us were diagnosed early I figured it's time for this thread.
If you have any questions or are diagnosed and need help dealing there are a few of us that have done this before and would be happy to help. The number one thing is to not be mad at yourself or upset. This is one of those things that your body just decides not to do correctly and there is nothing you can do about it. Being upset can make your numbers higher and isn't good for your little one.
Re: GD- questions and support
Here's my back story- I was tested at 12 weeks with my first pregnancy because of being at higher risk (over weight and family history)and was diagnosed at 13 weeks. I was devastated and felt that I did something wrong and cried for a week before my appointment at diabetic ed. I went to counseling and was taught that none of it was my fault my body just dramatically changes during pregnancy and doesn't do what it is supposed to.
Pregnancy number 2 was the same. I failed my one hour by a few points and failed the three.
This time with number three I tanked the one hour at 7 weeks and wasn't even given the three hour.
I was tested after each pregnancy and everything goes back to normal.
I have diet controlled it all three times so far. I am happy to help if anyone needs any help with anything, I pretty much have this down since it is my third time.
Remember stressing can cause your numbers to be higher so try to stay calm.
here's my eating plan-
- breakfast- 30 grams of carbs
- snack- 15-30
- lunch- 45-60
-snack- 15-30
-dinner- 45-60
-snack- 15-30
You should be eating every 2-3 hours during the day. Whenever you are eating you should make sure there is a sufficient amount of carbs and protein is eaten too, It helps your body process carbs better. If you fail they will probably have you try to diet control first. You should get diabetic ed. and they will teach you how to use a glucometer and give you eating tips.
Hopefully you pass your three hour but if you need us we are here. And don't freak out or worry (I know easier said than done) it can make your blood sugar higher.
@SoFlaMommie1128 my educator also told me to not go much past 8 hours with out eating at night even if it means getting up and drinking a glass of milk in the middle of the night so you can sleep in a little longer.
I had my first GD class on Tuesday with a followup this coming Tuesday. I am actually ok with the food restrictions, it's a little sad but not really hard. but I am struggling with the rigidity of the schedule they have me on for testing my blood glucose and eating. I work different hours different days, sometimes 9-4, sometimes 2-11, and on my 3 days a week off I have been sleeping until 11-12 because most nights I can't fall asleep until around 4 no matter what for who knows what reason. I anticipated small frequent meals, but not that I would have to test and then eat breakfast at exactly the same time every day. so today I was so hungry I was dry heaving before it was time for breakfast, and tomorrow I will have to set an alarm to get up at 9:30 to cook breakfast to eat it at 10 even though all I will want to do is stay asleep. I have been having a lot of problems being pregnant, this is the first thing that brought on a real ugly crying self pity moment. Both being hungry and getting up before I wake up naturally have been triggering migraines and I have gotten one every day since I started this schedule, twice in the middle of the night because she said I absolutely can't eat between 10 pm and 10 am, and I am so awake until 3-5 that I get really hungry again.
I would eat a "free" food like veggies if you are that hungry. You really shouldn't have to feel that miserable.
@leilaquinn that is my concern also. I work from 2-11 tonight, 11-8 tomorrow, 8-5 sunday back to 2-11 Monday.... I'm all over the place and i really have zero control over that. I'm hoping I pass my 3 hr and it doesn't come to that. Im sorry you are having such a hard time. *hugs*
Didn't pass my one hour either. But I have been eating much healthier the last few weeks and straying away from sweets. I never ate sweets before I was pregnant. I also think for the 3 hour test I will take the full 5 minutes to drink the stuff. The first time I chugged it to get it over with and that's what really upset my belly
eta, the really sleepy hungry melodramatic child in my brain wanted to ask her if I should maybe only take cold showers and sleep on the floor without a pillow, but I held it in
I was hopeful that this could be handled without medication (and the twice weekly non stress tests starting at 32 weeks that go with it) but it seems that this is the best option to keep the baby safe and not growing too fast. I was having readings in the 180's 2 hours after eating homemade lentil stew and a hard boiled egg for lunch.
edited b/c I have sick person brain and didn't make sense originally. I still might not make sense.

@leilaquinn I am glad you got things figured out! Hopefully you don't have to feel crazy hungry again.
Did anyone here have to fast for the 1 hour test?
@muggle621 below is my 3 HR GTT test results with the corresponding normal levels. They finally decided to tell me I passed
So, I've been on a low carb diet and on insulin 3x a day since August. My A1C has come down to 5.8 since then. It's still elevated (they want it under 5.4), but the good news is that baby is only in the 44th percentile (they want him around 50th percentile at this age)...so he's not growing too big too fast.
I'm growing weary of the daily logs of my food and blood sugars and the nutrition visits every 2 weeks, but other than that, I don't mind the extra visits to the MFM. I go in every 4 weeks for growth checks and starting next month I'll be going in twice a week for an NST and a biophysical profile until delivery. It's tiring and stressful but if it means we'll have a healthy baby in the end - it's all worth it.
Good luck to all of you currently testing! I hope all of you pass with flying colors!
I've tracked calories before but never macros so I'm a little nervous about the whole thing.
