GD- questions and support

Since most are now scheduling their test and a few of us were diagnosed early I figured it's time for this thread.
If you have any questions or are diagnosed and need help dealing there are a few of us that have done this before and would be happy to help. The number one thing is to not be mad at yourself or upset. This is one of those things that your body just decides not to do correctly and there is nothing you can do about it. Being upset can make your numbers higher and isn't good for your little one.

Re: GD- questions and support

  • @megpeg thanks for starting this! I failed the 1 hour 1 point shy of just being diagnosed from that and will do the 3 hour test on Tuesday. My OB did say that if my fasting level is over a certain number when I get there they will skip the rest of the test and just call the diagnosis official and refer me to a diabetes counselor. I am freaking out a bit but trying to stay positive and have already started eating like I have it.
  • When I was diagnosed with my first I was heartbroken thinking it was something I had done, I’ve since learned it’s just one of those things. This time around I was diagnosed at 8 weeks and we’ve been keeping a really close eye on my numbers! I struggled until recently to get my fasting numbers below 100, and now they’re steadily below 95! Good luck to everyone and seriously ask any questions! GD can be so overwhelming, but it’s definitely manageable!
  • Loading the player...
  • @megpeg that is reassuring to hear. I honestly can’t go particularly low on carbs as a vegetarian, most of my protein sources like legumes have a fair amount of carbs too.
  • So l found out l need to take the three hour test because mine was elevated after the 1 hour. I’m really worried, and know nothing about this. Never had an issue the first time with my son. Anything l can start doing right away to manage it?
  • @SoFlaMommie1128 -
    here's my eating plan-
    - breakfast- 30 grams of carbs
    - snack- 15-30
    - lunch- 45-60
    -snack- 15-30
    -dinner- 45-60
    -snack- 15-30

You should be eating every 2-3 hours during the day. Whenever you are eating you should make sure there is a sufficient amount of carbs and protein is eaten too, It helps your body process carbs better. If you fail they will probably have you try to diet control first. You should get diabetic ed. and they will teach you how to use a glucometer and give you eating tips.
Hopefully you pass your three hour but if you need us we are here. And don't freak out or worry (I know easier said than done) it can make your blood sugar higher.

  • Those of you that didn't pass the 1 hour test, did you have an idea you wouldn't pass? Any "symptoms" or strange feelings you had that would have hinted to you failing it?

@crossfitbabybump I was not suprised for a few reasons. I took the test early because my last urine sample has excess glucose. I also have 3 of the risk factors, I am 35, have a family history of diabetes, and started out overweight. I was thin most of my life, very thin for a lot of it, and a few years ago gained a lot pretty suddenly with no real life style changes. I was diagnosed with pRetty severe hypothyroidism this past February, and in the time between starting medication and getting pregnant I lost 22 pounds and was feeling like myself again, but it also seemed to resolve my unexplained infertility, and I just didn’t get the rest of the extra weight off.
  • @crossfitbabybump I get an almost buzzed feeling if I have too many carbs.

  • Thanks ladies! Any notices with how thirsty you get?
  • @crossfitbabybump I think extreme thirst is a sign with regular diabetes but not necessarily gestational.

  • I have had truly EXTREME thirst for about a month now, this is the other reason my OB had me take the test earlier than usual. Also because I was showing signs of dehydration while drinking an average of 300 ounces of water a day ( I started tracking how many times a day (and all night because the thirst wakes me up frequently) I have been filling up my 30 ounce cup of water.
  • Just wanted to come by and high five @megpeg for starting this thread. Its nice knowing we're not alone in any part of this baby making journey  <3

  • @megpeg thank you so much! I’m definitely not eating this many grams of carbs regularly throughout the day.
  • @cford08  I know I needed more help my first time and wanted to make sure others were getting the support they need.
@SoFlaMommie1128 my educator also told me to not go much past 8 hours with out eating at night even if it means getting up and drinking a glass of milk in the middle of the night so you can sleep in a little longer.

  • Well, didn't pass my one hour GT test by one point. I wasn't surprised though. DM runs on both sides of my family and I've been eating like crap the past couple of months. I'll be taking my 3 hour the first week of December. Fx I will be able to pass it. Now to go through all the sweets out that I really wanted this week  :s

  • @bb3vj3n so sorry to hear it!

I had my first GD class on Tuesday with a followup this coming Tuesday. I am actually ok with the food restrictions, it's a little sad but not really hard. but I am struggling with the rigidity of the schedule they have me on for testing my blood glucose and eating. I work different hours different days, sometimes 9-4, sometimes 2-11, and on my 3 days a week off I have been sleeping until 11-12 because most nights I can't fall asleep until around 4 no matter what for who knows what reason. I anticipated small frequent meals, but not that I would have to test and then eat breakfast at exactly the same time every day. so today I was so hungry I was dry heaving before it was time for breakfast, and tomorrow I will have to set an alarm to get up at 9:30 to cook breakfast to eat it at 10 even though all I will want to do is stay asleep. I have been having a lot of problems being pregnant, this is the first thing that brought on a real ugly crying self pity moment. Both being hungry and getting up before I wake up naturally have been triggering migraines and I have gotten one every day since I started this schedule, twice in the middle of the night because she said I absolutely can't eat between 10 pm and 10 am, and I am so awake until 3-5 that I get really hungry again.
  • @leilaquinn I absolutely do not understand a 12 hour stretch of not eating. Mine told me that should be the longest I should go was 10 hours and she would rather I did earlier and to get up and drink a glass of milk or something in the night if I was hungry. 12 hours is wayyyy to long to not eat. Your blood sugar is going to bottom out or spike if you go that long.
I would eat a "free" food like veggies if you are that hungry. You really shouldn't have to feel that miserable.

  • @megpeg thank you for starting this thread and for all the knowledge you being to the topic. it's reassuring

@leilaquinn that is my concern also. I work from 2-11 tonight, 11-8 tomorrow, 8-5 sunday back to 2-11 Monday.... I'm all over the place and i really have zero control over that. I'm hoping I pass my 3 hr and it doesn't come to that. Im sorry you are having such a hard time. *hugs*
  • Didn't pass my one hour either. But I have been eating much healthier the last few weeks and straying away from sweets. I never ate sweets before I was pregnant. I also think for the 3 hour test I will take the full 5 minutes to drink the stuff. The first time I chugged it to get it over with and that's what really upset my belly :(

@megpeg I really don't get it. I'm hoping that this week is just to see how my numbers are (and they are inconsistent, but consistently high for that first test after 12 hours) and that things can be adjusted from here. if I were allowed to move everything an hour later that would help so much, she was all about eating based on our circadian rhythms, not our schedules, but that has always been a weird issue for me, I am naturally very nocturnal, I fight it pretty well in order to function in the world, but right now my whole body is rebelling and one of the few comforts is sleeping until noon when I wake up naturally and not feeling guilty for eating some pistachios at 3 am.

eta, the really sleepy hungry melodramatic child in my brain wanted to ask her if I should maybe only take cold showers and sleep on the floor without a pillow, but I held it in :D:'(

  • @leilaquinn I don't even understands your person. I eat according to My schedule that I made up with my consultant. Thats the way I have been taught all three times. If I feel like my sugar is low or I test and see it is I add in another small snack. If you feel like you need to get up and eat a handful of nuts do it. You may need more protein then. I always have carrots out to eat when I am at an in between time and am hungry.

  • @megpeg to be clear, if I had wanted to start everything earlier it would have been fine with her, this schedule is just as late as she will let me go. Breakfast at 10 and dinner at 7 aren’t crazy early at all in general, even though a year ago I usually ate for the first time around 2 and usually ate dinner around 10-11. I am aware that my natural schedule is not compatible with having a child either, so getting used to earlier makes some sense anyway. But I will definitely talk to her on Tuesday about adding any snack she thinks is a good idea later than 10 if I am unable to sleep and hungry.
  • Last night I started insulin injections. My numbers were super erratic and just way too high fasting and at random times that seemed to match my weird blood pressure spikes more than relating to what I ate. @megpeg I did contact my counselor on Monday and told her I was eating a snack like nuts if I was up at 2 am and starving and she was ok with that, but it didn't affect my fasting numbers. I am on a long acting insulin that I inject (in my stomach!) once a day and today was the first day since I've been tracking that it wasn't over 130 fasting (it was 94, so still a little over the max they want of 90, but way better.)

I was hopeful that this could be handled without medication (and the twice weekly non stress tests starting at 32 weeks that go with it) but it seems that this is the best option to keep the baby safe and not growing too fast. I was having readings in the 180's 2 hours after eating homemade lentil stew and a hard boiled egg for lunch.

What was the threshold for y'all that determines if you pass or fail? My doctor's office hasn't called me ( I guess mine are too busy too @cford08).I looked up my lab report online and it seemed as though I passed; HOWEVER I realized in the last hour or the lab I had my bloodwork done at may have a completely different pass/fail threshold than my doctor's office. I know some doctor's will differ but I wouldn't think it would differ by that many points. Most of the the stuff I read online said anything under 140 passes but I was wondering if this was the case for all of you? I do have a call into my doctor but I won't hear back until tomorrow.

edited b/c I have sick person brain and didn't make sense originally. I still might not make sense.

@muggle621 a lot of doctors offices have different numbers they go by. I think my office was 140 this time.
@leilaquinn I am glad you got things figured out! Hopefully you don't have to feel crazy hungry again.

  • I'm so glad I saw this thread as I've been stressing over this today! I had an u/s this week and my Maternal/Fetal Med doc mentioned my babies (I'm having fraternal twin boys) are big (80-90 percentiles) and have above average levels of amniotic fluid. This can be linked to GD. She didn't seem overly concerned about it but did stress that I need to take the glucose screening which I have scheduled for next week. I don't have a history of diabetes in my family but have many risk factors (35 so AMA, overweight after gaining 30 lbs from IVF before even getting pregnant, I'm having multiples). I've definitely noticed an increase in my frequency to urinate and more tired than usual but that may just be normal for a pregnant girl! The increase in thirst thing I've had my entire pregnancy, it was actually one of my very first symptoms strangely enough. I heard the Mediterranean diet is good for treatment/prevention so I'm thinking of going that route. And idk about exercise...I'm carrying two babies and even a walk through the grocery store leaves me in bad pain.

Did anyone here have to fast for the 1 hour test?
  • I wasn't instructed to fast, but I did because I wanted to be as accurate as I could be @i-wanna-b-the-girl-w-most-cake

@muggle621 below is my 3 HR GTT test results with the corresponding normal levels. They finally decided to tell me I passed  :/

  • For anyone who has done the 3 hour test did they have you increase your carbs 3 days before the test to 150g plus what you already eat? That just seems like so much food to me. I failed the one hour and am seriously stressing my 3 hour test. Thanks for everyone’s help.
  • @katester91 I have never had to change maybe diet before the three hour. That seems like it would misrepresent the results because it's not how you eat normally.

  • That’s what I thought too. It seems so weird to me. I might just try and add a couple snacks into my diet. Normally I only eat three meals and usually my breakfast is pretty small. Thank you @megpeg
  • I’m feeling so discouraged lately. Ever since I hit 28 weeks last Thursday my sugars have been out of control. I’m definitely going to have to adjust my insulin, again.
  • Thinking of you ladies that haven't passed <3 stay strong!
  • I was diagnosed with Type 2 (not gestational) at week 9.  Since I was pre-diabetic during my last pregnancy, I started taking my fasting blood sugars right from the beginning this time.  They were in the 160's. I mentioned this to my OB at my first visit and she immediately drew an A1C and my # was 6.4.  I was put on insulin and referred to MFM right away (I'm also AMA and overweight).  She thinks I was diabetic before pregnancy but never diagnosed - which is why they're not calling it gestational.

So, I've been on a low carb diet and on insulin 3x a day since August.  My A1C has come down to 5.8 since then.  It's still elevated (they want it under 5.4), but the good news is that baby is only in the 44th percentile (they want him around 50th percentile at this age)...so he's not growing too big too fast.

I'm growing weary of the daily logs of my food and blood sugars and the nutrition visits every 2 weeks, but other than that, I don't mind the extra visits to the MFM.  I go in every 4 weeks for growth checks and starting next month I'll be going in twice a week for an NST and a biophysical profile until delivery.  It's tiring and stressful but if it means we'll have a healthy baby in the end - it's all worth it.

Good luck to all of you currently testing!  I hope all of you pass with flying colors!

  • Waahhh I failed the 1 hour by 1 point, exactly the same thing happened with my first! I think I'll pass the 3 hour but I remember feeling soooo sick last time after sitting for all that time with no food and the gross drink. Not looking forward to it
  • Well ladies, just figured I'd pop in and say hi. I've been too high on 2 of my draws so far for the 3 hour test which puts me at failing.  :|  Failed the fasting draw by 5 points and the next one by 3 points. So they're referring me to a specialist at the hospital I'll deliver at and for some classes I need to take now.

I've tracked calories before but never macros so I'm a little nervous about the whole thing.   :/
