LNCI Anyone?

Since some of us have our littles now I though it might be fun to start a Late Night Check In?! I'm up nursing baby after the first four hours stretch he has given us. My boobs were literally rock hard and I woke up in puddles but man did that sleep feel good!!

Re: LNCI Anyone?

  • My LO doesn't usually give 4 hours, maybe 3 but he's back up and past birth weight already. By now he's awake having tooted for awhile and is also hungry. The rock hard boobs will happen less. Breast engorgement for me was so painful this time around but lasted less than 24 hours. I'm looking forward to him going back to sleep so I can have a few more hours.

  • We've been getting 1.5 hour max at night, and a good 3 hours during the day so I'm glad he is finally starting to switch over his day/night!
Ive take three hot showers today to televise the engorgement!! It was like this with my first son too, huge over supply. Which I'm grateful for after the pain goes away hahah

  • I am still triple feeding which means I'm supposed to feed every 3 hours no matter what.  I used to have to wake her up but she's getting better at being awake and hungry.  She is above birth weight so I'm happy about that.  The 230 am feeding is rough though....
  • The last 2 nights were rough- LO would cry every time we put him in his bassinet (in our room) after a feeding. He would only stop if I picked him up. He cries even when DH picked him up. I was starting to lose my mind. So I tried putting him in his crib in his room and voila - he slept just fine! I'm happy we got some sleep but sad he prefers being in his crib. I like having him next to me and I know it helps prevent SIDS.
  • @mymulligan that is so hard when they cry and you dont know why.   Glad you were able to get sleep. Hopefully is just a short term thing and he'll go back to the bassinette.  I had a couple of nights where little one would only sleep on my chest.   She is fine now and back to sleeping in her bassinette.
  • Lo sleeps on my chest from 5 o'clock on, his tummy seems to get fussy and he doesn't want to be swaddled down. Otherwise he does well in his swaddle sleepsak next to me.
  • I move mine to my chest/ the bed around 5am as well. He's up every hour for a few hours and that 5-7am stretch is a guarantee that I need hahah

  • I have a fussy little one tonight .... fed around 9:30 and should have been good for like 2.5 to 3 hours ...not tonight woke an hour later and every time I put her down she is wide awake crying. I think it's going to be a long night.
  • I have a cluster feeder, usually until 11 or 12. DH and I were dying with laughter because we had to change a poppy diaper 3 times within an hour.  Now he has cute hiccups, I'm ready to throw in the towel
  • Cluster feeding can be frustrating but hopefully that means he gives you a longer stretch of sleep @MaximumEffort. I pumped at 8:30 and went to bed at 9. Not sure what time my DH gave him a bottle but LO didn't wake until 1. I haven't gotten that much sleep since before he was born.
  • I'm in hospital...will be here until Tuesday. Since baby is in NICU I'm pumping for 15 minutes every 3 hours. My last pump was at 4am and I'm due again at 7am. Since I just had baby yesterday afternoon Im not producing anything yet...not even colstrom...hopefully I get something at my next pump or by the time I reach 24 hours this afternoon.

  • @sml1982 my little one wasnt in the nicu but I was doing the same thing.  Figuring out feeding can be so stressful.  Hang in there.
  • @angkay711 thanks. How long did it take for your milk to come in?
  •    My milk came in on Tues and she was born on Saturday so about 3 days.   She was pre term so feeding was a struggle initially.   She is doing better but still trying to figure things out.
  • Ok good to know. Thanks
  • My milk took about 3-4 days also. I was pumping every 3 hours in the NICU and ended up with major oversupply, engorgement and then mastitis. It will come!

I just pumped about a hour ago and finally got some colstrum out...the nurse helped me suck it up in a syringe and I just took it over to baby in NICU. Hopefully milk will be next
  • @sml1982 in case this happens to you - I got colostrum then nothing for a few days. Maybe a little bit of colostrum that we would put on a cotton swab and bring to the nicu to rub on baby's gums. Just don't want you to get disappointed if still takes a couple days!
  • Thank you everyone...my milk to finally came in 11/13 and I have been pumping likr crazy every since. Baby is now 10 days old and she is already drinking 4 oz every 3 hours. This girl loves to eat.
  • @sml1982 4 oz  every 3 hours! That's amazing!
  • Ugh I am so tired. I think LO is cluster feeding and I am trying to get my latch to improve. The real struggle is we are still in he hospital and she will not sleep in the basinet. She will only sleep skin to skin on me. DH tries to soothe her, but she gets super fussy.

So we are trying to alternate sleeping. I just got a little over an hour of sleep with her on my chest and DH sitting next to me. Right now, I am up with her on my chest and DH is sleeping.

I did also just buy an InstaPot on Amazon because it's a lightening deal for $45 off lol. Let's hope this doesn't start a trend of late night shopping. :)
  • @dragonfly87-2 that's hard. Hopefully just a short term thing.  Maybe she just doesnt like the hospital.  Sounds like you have a system worked out.  The sleep deprivation is tough though.  Hang in there.    :)
  • DS spends most of the night on my chest. Latches are can be tough, I had it wrong for 3 weeks.  I always turn to Kellymom.com, my consultant on the hospital said to position LOs head a little lower so that the nipple points up towards the nose. Utilize nipple cream.
  • @dragonfly87-2 has your milk come in yet? At least for me, days 2-5 were the hardest. My girls nursed around the clock and never seemed satisfied while my milk was coming in. It got a little better after the first week or so. If you haven’t already, if you’re still in the hospital, meet with the lactation specialist. She can help you with your latch and different positions. As your latch improves and your milk comes in, hopefully your little girl will begin to feel satisfied and sleep a little better. I emphasize hopefully bc my little girl is sleeping better but still prefers to sleep while being held...
  • @littlemissc17 My milk started coming in yesterday. Definitely engorged and sensitive right now...so while she was latching pretty well at first (thank goodness for the lactation specialists), it is a bit more difficult for her right now with the size and it hurts a bit.

She is starting to sleep for 2.5 hour stretches, but the challenge is, she will only do it while on my chest or my DH's. So we are still taking shifts/turns to get sleep. I am hoping this will start to improve over the next week.
  • We are having lots of latch problems right now. He tongues thrusts and isn’t coordinated. He will suck like 3 times and then stop. Thanks the LC in the hospital has been an angel. I am able to hand express quite a bit of colostrum so each feed we get that into his mouth atleast. I will take the struggle for the post feeding snuggles on my chest tho.

  • @DungeonTrollMel .....Have you tried a nipple shield. I had problems latching in the hospital cause of my nipples and the nurse told me to try one and it worked. Now she will only feed with it but as long as she is getting fed I am happy and she is happy. Not sure if it would help in your case but just an option.
  • @kdw89 yes. The LC has spent hours with me the last two days. He hates nipple shields. She is referring us to a specialist in town who is an NP and an LC in one. He has a posterior tongue tie so she can treat that and work on his feeding at the same time. He tongue thrusts really bad. He’s hungry so I express into his mouth, pump to encourage supply formation and hand express onto a spoon my nipples have been man handled so much lately

@DungeonTrollMel I am sorry to hear about the latch issues. Hopefully his coordination will improve, they can treat the tongue tie and breastfeeding will get easier. But newborn snuggles are awesome!
  • @DungeonTrollMel that's great that you are getting support from the LC.  Breast feeding can be so hard.  Bummer that he won't use a nipple shield that's what saved me.   I am not using one anymore but it was great.   Hopefully things get easier.  Also yay for baby snuggles.  They definitely help.
  • @DungeonTrollMel ... seems like you are getting alot of support. And I hope the specialist can help getting him to latch so feedings can become easier for you both.
  • Latch issues are the worst. You never know there is an issue until your nipples are bleeding. Hope things get sorted out for everyone quickly!

  • Crossing my fingers that nights going forward will be more similar to last night. It was so awesome to have a shift schedule and we got our LO to sleep inside basinet (and not on our chest) about 75% of the time.

We did shifts that were 9pm-2:30am for DH. He woke me every 2.5 hours to breastfeed. Then, I got up at 2:30am and managed on my own until 9:00am. It worked out really well because DH likes staying up late. So he watched TV and played his video game (yes, my grown DH still plays madden...). I on the other hand have struggled with insomnia for quite sometime and usually wake up around 3:00am on most nights and stay up for at least two hours. So it wasn't too hard for me get up and be active. Luckily, our LO also napped in the basinet for some of the time and I was able to pick up 3 more hours of sleep.
  •  Thoughts on pacifiers? Has anyone introduced the pacifier earlier than two weeks? We’ve been trying to work on the 5 S’s to get our fussy, needy baby to sleep at night, but we’re missing the pacifier part. I’m EBF and everything I’ve been told or read says to hold off until about four weeks before introducing the pacifier to make sure BFing is firmly established, so I’m terrified to do so before then, but mama and daddy need some sleep!
  • @ladymeowmeow2 my doula is also a trained lactation consultant and she said while it's not ideal to introduce it early, you still need to keep your sanity. If you have established breastfeeding, you shouldn't have too much trouble with nipple confusion. And if you do, just stop using the pacifier. You can also try cleaning your pinky and letting your LO suck on it until they fall asleep.
  • @ladymeowmeow2 I was nervous to start using a pacifier early and waited until almost 5 weeks and am still cautious.  My friend has already started using one with her LO and she started before the recommended time.  I'm sure you can find good and bad stories.   We have used the pinky trick and it seemed to help with our LO.
  • @ladymeowmeow2 my lo got a pacifier the first day he was born by the nicu nurses. He took to it right away and at first I was upset because I didn't want him to have it but I actually think it helped our BFing get better. Even the OT that met with him daily had the paci as part of his daily therapy. It really does help him soothe. My DD never used one so this is new to me with this little guy.
  • @ladymeowmeow2 Get some Wubbanubs. I swaddle them in with Austin.  Now he can self soothe and his latch/sucking has improved when I breastfeed him. We have Puppy (dog) and MonkMonk (monkey). Raffey (giraffe) is still in the package.
It's funny how it's the little things in life that mean the most...not where you live, or what you drive, or the price tag on your clothes... There's no dollar sign on a piece of mind, this I've come to know! *ZBB*

  • I have been nervous to use a paci too much. We do suck training with ours but only a few minutes at a time. He’s bottle fed so I don’t have nipple confusion to contend with but the whole. “Not until after 30 days to decrease sids” has me terrified
