@mileswithmyles My cousin has a kid with that name, so it's off the table. Cute though!
But as a nickname for Everett that might work!
  • Loading the player...
  • @arteduc8 what if you did Everett and a middle name and called him by the initials?  Like Everett James could be EJ?
  • @mileswithmyles I'm torn on names like that. As a teacher, a lot of times when students went by their initials, it was because the didn't like their first name. I even had one kid email me before school started to let me know to call him TJ and not Trevor when I did attendance because he hated his name.
  • @arteduc8 that’s true. I totally get that as a teacher. I think about that, too, when I think about how to spell my child’s name. But I know some people who intentionally call their child by initials from day 1. I like th name Everett a lot and think it’s cute without a NN.
  • @mileswithmyles I guess Everett is short enough on its own that it could go without a nickname. DD's name is 3 syllables, so I'm so used to nicknames, but that definitely could be an option.

My maiden name was Elliott and I've thought about suggesting that as a boys name. Would that be weird? I'm an only female child whose dad died and my mom is remarried so it felt like a way to honor my dad but I honestly wasn't fond of his first or middle name.
I actually love this idea and don't think it's weird at all. Elliot to me seems more like a first name anyways, so I don't think it would appear as if you were forcing a surname to be a first name. I love it!
It's weird cause my married name is common as a male first name but spelled a bit different too. If we did that should I spell it Elliott or Elliot? My maiden name was spelled the first way but ALWAYS had to be corrected and I'd hate to give a name always misspelled.
  • @charlestonchew I actually prefer it with the double t like your maiden name. But, you'd know from experience.

@charlestonchew I agree, Elliott is the way I would spell a boy's first name.  I like it.
@arteduc8 I like Everett, but I feel like it's pretty popular, I don't know if that bothers you.  What about Brett?  Or Barret?  Beckett?  Bennett?  I just googled "boys names that end in et" LOL and I'm picking some of the more common ones

  • @charlestonchew I knew someone who had a maiden name of Seymour and used that as their sons middle name. I think it is sweet. Also when I think of Elliott I’d always spell it with two T’s.

@charlestonchew My cousin is going to do that for her mom that passed away. Her Maiden name will be her daughter's first name. I think its a perfect way to honor your father. I have also only thought of Elliott with two t's, but maybe thats just me. I always think its look incomplete with one T
  • @charlestonchew I have a nephew named Elliott... Fits him perfectly and I love that if you have a boy your maiden name could be used. I would go with the exact spelling.

@arteduc8 you could use "ever" as a nn possibly. I think it is becoming more popular but I personally don't know any boys with that name. Never met a single one.
  • @kpc914 @bwow615 I agree I prefer Elliott, maybe I'm just biased. I'm not kidding though literally every time I told people my last name for anything I would have to go "TWO T'S!" lol but maybe that spelling is becoming more popular and common. When I was younger the only place I heard the name Elliott/Elliot was in the movie ET.

I also had Eliot...Eliut...maybe people are just stupid.

Just rambling now but I didn't marry much better. I have literally the same issue. I'm not crazy afraid of stranger danger so I'll tell you my last name now is Conner, which is Irish but ALWAYS get the spelling Connor because of the male name. Now I just have to scream "ER!"
  • @charlestonchew Not sure where you are, but using the maiden name as a first name for a child is a very commonplace thing in the southern US. I know plenty of people who do this, even with names that aren't first names to begin with! Elliott would be a great one to do it with.
    Waiting for #3!

  • Love Everett and I don’t think it needs a nickname. You could always call him Ev or Evie or Ever.
I Elliott is adorable and I definitely think it should be spelled with 2 “t’s”. Funny, my kids just saw ET for the first time,
AND my new niece’s name is Elliot (just
born on Tuesday!) So many Elliot’s in the last few days!
If this baby is a boy we will name him John after my recently deceased uncle with the middle name Joseph after my husband’s grandfather. We’ll call him Jay, which was my uncle’s nickname. Most of our kids have family names. My son is named William after my MIL’s Father, but we call him Wit for short. In case anyone is thinking of William, Wit is a super cute nickname!
If the baby is a girl we will call her Clara Jane after DH’s great grandmother.

  • @charlestonchew I agree, Elliott is the way I would spell a boy's first name.  I like it.

Yeah, I need to check the popularity on the names for sure. I originally really liked Beckett, but saw it was on the rise. Being a teacher, I really prefer my kids to have uncommon names. My DD's name didn't even crack the social security top 1000 ever. I definitely blame my name picking woes in being a teacher. Too many associations with common names and have taught to many classes that had multiples of the same name.
  • @arteduc8 what about Wyatt?
  • So because we had our boy name locked down, it’s another girl  :D DH and I are working on a name without fighting which is a challenge in itself.

    Middle name will be Claire.

    Here are our top contenders:
    Hadley
    Ellison
    Landry
    Sutton

opinions? Things to add? Super open to suggestions.
  • @Poppy0419 Arden? Laurell? Sage?
  • @holli0801 Sage is my god daughters middle name and one of my favs!!! DH turned down Arden earlier today but I’m pitching Laurel too! Thanks!!
  • @Poppy0419 only one that makes me pause is Landry. I really like Hadley and Sutton. Especially with the mn Claire.
  • It bums me out all the people noting how popular Theodore has become. My 4 year old is Theodore and goes by Theo. The name has gone up so much in popularity since we named him and I picked the name when I was in high school. At least we don't know any other Theo's and he can always go by Ted when he gets older if he knows too many people with his name.
  • @poppy0419 I love your name list! I'm also very partial to it because my DD2's name is on it. I usually don't reveal her name on here because when I mentioned it in my previous board I got MAJOR hate for it, but I will say IDGAF and I named her it anyway and now I get countless compliments in public when I say her name out loud. I've had two people I know name their children it as well, after I did. I like to give myself credit for that ;)
  • We are finding out the sex at our anatomy scan on 12/6. I’m pretty sure we will stick with Samuel Clarke (clarke is DH middle name and his moms maiden name) but I’m torn about the girl choices. The middle name will almost definitely be Sue or Ellen (my middle name is Sue, as is my moms, my grandmothers name is Sue Ellen). I love Ellen for the middle name but DH says he prefers Sue...our two choices for first names are Caroline and Kathryn (DH wants to spell it Catherine, which is his moms name and spelling).

    Thoughts? Opinions?
  • I think both girl name options sound best with the mn of sue.
  • @bwow615 & @Guillerma

That name is masculine. It's the "ey" at the end I suppose that makes ya think it's not? But I used to work with a Delaney who was male. I never thought of it as feminine
  • @arteduc8 ok so this is probably a horrible suggestion lol but the only ett name I can think of not suggested is Hamlet :P could work if you are a Shakespeare fan though I can see ham as a nickname and anything pig related is not a good idea.

I love Sutton but will not use it because it's the last name of someone I work with (like someone that won't be leaving ever). I don't want people asking if I named my baby after him.

Also, we had our boys name on lockdown and it's a girl too so I know the feeling!

  • @mskennedy16 I prefer the spelling of Catherine. Caroline is a beautiful name as well! I do think Sue sounds better with both names.

@kendrajos I have seen Hamlet yet on any lists. While I like the Shakespeare association, the "ham" nickname is a definite downside. Points for creativity though!

@nanifrog Wyatt is cute, but a dear friend's son is named that.

Part of why I like the -tt ending is the strong consonant sound to balance the soft -en ending of my last name. So I'm also starting to look for names that end in c or ck. I found this website that is helpful in eliminating babes we aren't looking for. Very specific advanced search settings. Hoping this tool will be useful to others!

  • @tacosandvirginmargaritas I have like the worlds
most common names...even my last name. So I tend to be on the “weird” side when it comes to naming. I feel fine about my list as long as no one was like okay lol you’re absolutely insane!!

Funny enough DD has a fairly common name because we couldn’t agree on anything.
  • @Poppy0419 same. My first name is extremely common and my last is moderately common. So I like uncommon names.

my DD1 has a common name as well because my ex and I couldn't agree on anything and I finally gave into one of his choices

my DH now and I have similar tastes in names and fell in love with the name, Landry. That is my DD2's name and I absolutely adore it. I actually first heard it from the movie - The Grinch. The actress who played the Grinch's crush when they were kids is named Landry Albright.

Now I am having a boy and struggling so
hard to find a name. I like Thayer, but it's a little too "out there" for my DH, haha.

    @tacosandvirginmargaritas what about Sayer?
PS-I like Thayer, though id never heard it before and it made me think it Sayer.
  • @Poppy0419 we have the most common last name too! I want to use names that are not too common but not too strange. Being a teacher makes me cringe at names that look like a jumble of letters or are completely made up.

I really want to honor our moms if we have a girl. My mom is Mary Kathleen and mil is Mary  Katherine. I’m not a huge fan of Mary on its own. We have always planned to use hope as a middle name for a girl (dh’s first wife fought cancer for years and their phrase was hope. I want to honor her although I never got to meet her).
*dh recently came up with Maryanna Hope. My grandmother was Anna so it’s our front runner, but I don’t love it yet.
Excuse my random. My ds woke up at 6:30 and Mickey Mouse is playing loudly!

  • @roomsu I like that... just wondering what you think of spelling Marianna?
  • @roomsu my Mom was a teacher and ruins every single name for me. Every one. Unless she comes up with it. It’s infuriating.
  • Being from large extended families, and both of us being teachers makes it very hard to find names.

    Tw mc mentioned

Last year we had finally decided on a boys name, Illiam because I wanted William but dh didn't like Bill , he likes the name Liam, but I said I needed a real name for a nickname. Well, that pregnancy ended in a mc and now my cousin is naming her son Liam and she's due in January. Dh says he doesn't care we had a name picked out (only name we could agree on for a boy) and we should just name it if it's a boy what we wanted. I can't see naming 2 children in the same year the same thing. Now I'm not a big fan on this cousin she really shouldn't be having a child, but I just can't see naming them the same name.

    End tw

If it's a boy the middle name will be Russell after his father who passed away. Dh has his grandfather's middle name, and his father had his grandfather's middle name.

For a girl we love Madelyn (Maddie) and I'm leaning on Elizabeth for a middle name after my sister.
