Re: Weekly Questions (week of 10/29)

  • @Miz_Liz @abteamb the thing is, there are 25 apts on my floor. And it could be from a different floor, just depends on how the air vents work. For instance, I hear an infant screaming through our air vent but I never see a baby on our floor. Ditto a dog. Ditto some men that seem to play beer pong a lot. Also, it’s not allowed, but I suspect some apts rent out as air bnbs. Ugh I just want to move already!

  • @doxiemoxie212 yeah that’s a really tough situation.  I honestly don’t know if there’s anything you can do.  You could try to argue with the landlord that your rights are being violated and your health is being compromised and see if they will let you break lease early (if you put up enough stink that they just want you to go away), but I would be amazed if they do anything.  Is it something that you notice as it starts that you could put a fan blowing back into the vents?
  • @Miz_Liz well, we’re the landlords lol. We own our apt. And it’s a condo building, not co-op, so blargh. The vents are on the ceiling so a fan might be logistically problematic. I could try duct taping them closed.... anyone know if that’s bad for a different reason?
  • @doxiemoxie212 oohhh that’s definitely a lot harder then!!  If they’re not your source for heat then I would think you could cover them?
  • @doxiemoxie212, how old is the building? Is it possible that some building design plans still exist that might give more information on which apartments your vents are linked to? I would bet that it must be within either a few apartments around you and a few floors above or below you.

  • @icecubeinthedesert it used to be a bank in the 20s... and at some point was converted to apts. how would one go about finding the plans...? :-/

@Miz_Liz yea they’re not our heat. It’s our only ventilation in the bathroom, but we mostly leave the doors open for showering anyway, and there’s no fan so it’s barely effective. Ok, temporary solution: block vents.
  • @doxiemom212 An air purifier maybe? I don't have experience with them but it came to mind. There are also certain plants that clean the air. Peace Lillies, I believe are known to be a good air purifiers. I think this one is toxic to dogs if ingested so do research/put them out of reach of pups.
  • @Llamamama14 yea we have air purifiers. Doesn’t make a dent. It’s a ton of smoke.
  • @doximoxie212, I figured that was a long-shot. It was probably all added much later in renos?

  • @doxiemoxie212 maybe try fixing an activated charcoal filter to the ceiling so the air has to pass through that before the bathroom? I dont know =/ but that sucks
  • @doxiemoxie212 I don’t have any more advice to give, as it seems the ladies above have quite a few ideas. But I had the same thing (weed, not cigarettes) happen to me in college! It ended up being the apartment two floors below us, they would “hot box” in their bathroom and it ended up in ours.
