Are you getting testing done?

Re: Are you getting testing done?

  • Has anyone done testing and had to get to redone because of low fetal dna in your blood?  I did the Maternit21 test (I was 9 weeks, 1 day), and my doctor finally called and said they didn’t have any results. I have to get bloood redrawn tomorrow (will be a day shy of 12 weeks), and am just really nervous about it

Our genetic counselor mentioned that's a risk when doing the testing too early. I thought most tests recommended waiting until 10 weeks?

We actually waited until I was 11 weeks to do the blooddraw specifically for this reason- the farther along you are, the lower the risk of having this issue is what we were told.

So sorry that's so disappointing:( what a long wait too.

We are going on Friday/ Monday as I'll be around 11 weeks to make sure we get enough fetal DNA. We're getting there! I'm anxious for the results as well.

  • I’m opting for no additional testing.  While for some people testing gives them peace of mind.  For me it’s the opposite.  I have peace of mind, but tests give me the worst anxiety and I’m unable to turn it off once it gets going.  For this Mama protecting my baby from my anxiety attacks takes priority.

  • I just had my NT scan! Went well even tho baby was upside down so they couldn’t completely measure NT thickness. Not that it’s a huge deal but I thought they would also be doing the blood test that can tell gender but nope, not even offered. Of course I’m relirved everything looked right on track but I was super excited to find out! Now to decide if I want to order that online sneak peak kit...

  • Did Panorama yesterday. It’ll be a long 10-14 business days to wait!
  • My panorama test took about 8 days from the day it was drawn. If you go to the natera website and make an account you can see the results right on there. It tells you when the results are expected but I got mine 3 days earlier. You may have to call the natera customer service to get your ID number if you don't have it but it's super quick. @Poppy0419
  • I chose to do the Panorama blood test which came back low risk and boy! Huge relief to see the low risk numbers and so exciting to know it's a boy this time. Also did the NT scan and bloodwork which I don't have results from yet. Baby was lazy and wanted to suck his thumb instead of cooperate for the tech. I don't remember having any tests done with either of my girls and I was younger then (19 & 21 years when pregnant) this time at 27 and after going through nursing school I decided I'd much rather know and be prepared than not. I know what could go wrong and I firmly believe it's always better to be prepared than go in blindly.
  • To those who've done MaterniT21, how long did it take you to get results? We got our blood drawn Monday and the clinic said to expect results Friday or Monday, but from what I've read online I'm wondering if that is overly optimistic.

@thunderberry I did the MaterniT21 on Friday Oct, 20th and I got my results back yesterday. My friend did hers on the 24th and hers are excepted to be back Thursday or Friday of this week.

It takes about a week and a half from my experience and other people I know.
  • @thunderberry I did the MaterniT21 and it took 6 days including a weekend!

My blood was drawn 9:30am on a Monday morning and they called with results at 3pm on Friday.
  • I can't remember if I read it on this thread or a different one, but are some of the more detailed blood tests comparable to an amnio?

No, these tests are screening tests, and do not give a diagnosis. They can only tell you if you are at an increased risk of abnormalities. Anyone who tests positive in a free cell DNA blood test will need to have an amnio or other diagnostic test. That being said, these new blood tests are more accurate than previous screenings.
  • @sparklingdiamond as @gildah said the NIPT blood test is technically just a screening test so not perfectly accurate. However it's a LOT more accurate than the maternal serum/NT screens, or ultrasound diagnosis. If you get a positive result, depending on the diagnosis it is correct in about 80% or so cases. And a negative is much more likely to be reliable, at around 99.5%. So basically if you get a negative you can feel pretty comfortable (although I have seen one or two reports of false negatives) but if you get a positive it would need to be confirmed with an amnio or cvs.
  • I had NT screening and bloods I am 34. I am at an increased risk at 1/88 apparently 1/150 Is no risk. I'm thinking of having the Harmony testing done. Anyone recommend? I'm going out of my mind!
  • @superparanoidpreggo did you read the posts in this thread? You’ll see a lot of people commenting on their experiences with the cell free DNA tests.
  • We had both the NT scan/quad screen and a cell-free non-invasive prenatal screening (the MaterniT Genome, because that's what our OB office offers). I'm AMA (37) so the MaterniT test was covered. We felt some confusion/alarm because our quad screen suggested we had an elevated risk of Down syndrome (1/251), but the MaterniT test was negative and most sources I've found suggest that cell-free screening results are more reliable than quad screenings--so we probably won't get an amnio unless further ultrasounds suggest other potential problems. I couldn't be sure how we would respond to information about chromosomal abnormalities, but I would definitely consider terminating in the case of conditions where the baby would be unlikely to survive after birth, so it seemed important to do these screenings--and in the case of non-fatal conditions, it would be helpful to have time to prepare for them (practically and emotionally) before the baby's birth.

We decided NOT to have a full genetic screening to see if we are carriers for genetic conditions, however. I was screened for the three most common genetic conditions during my first pregnancy four years ago, and my husband, who has some Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, was screened for Tay Sachs and a few other conditions at the same time. We talked all this over with our OB about a month ago, and she seemed to think the genetic carrier screening wasn't medically indicated; but then yesterday another provider at our practice seemed SHOCKED that we hadn't been encouraged to get the full screening (for 175 conditions) and kind of pressured us into getting blood taken that day. When I got home I felt really uncomfortable with the way the appointment had gone, and the way in which I had been rushed into revisiting this decision that my family had already made, and I called to cancel the test. I know it could give us potentially useful information about what to look out for, but I know myself and I know that the anxiety this test is likely to cause me outweighs the potential benefits to our family.
