Re: Are you getting testing done?
We actually waited until I was 11 weeks to do the blooddraw specifically for this reason- the farther along you are, the lower the risk of having this issue is what we were told.
We are going on Friday/ Monday as I'll be around 11 weeks to make sure we get enough fetal DNA. We're getting there! I'm anxious for the results as well.
It takes about a week and a half from my experience and other people I know.
We decided NOT to have a full genetic screening to see if we are carriers for genetic conditions, however. I was screened for the three most common genetic conditions during my first pregnancy four years ago, and my husband, who has some Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry, was screened for Tay Sachs and a few other conditions at the same time. We talked all this over with our OB about a month ago, and she seemed to think the genetic carrier screening wasn't medically indicated; but then yesterday another provider at our practice seemed SHOCKED that we hadn't been encouraged to get the full screening (for 175 conditions) and kind of pressured us into getting blood taken that day. When I got home I felt really uncomfortable with the way the appointment had gone, and the way in which I had been rushed into revisiting this decision that my family had already made, and I called to cancel the test. I know it could give us potentially useful information about what to look out for, but I know myself and I know that the anxiety this test is likely to cause me outweighs the potential benefits to our family.
