Questions - Week of 10/16

Re: Questions - Week of 10/16

  • @orbmaker - thank you I will check those out! Yes, they are a bit swollen and my DH rubs them for me. I think I just over did it this weekend with moving furniture and painting the nursery. My friend recommended compression socks, I will check into those too!
  • STMs+: Am I crazy for considering getting DD a toddler bed so I can use her crib for the new baby?  She'll be 19 months when I'm due and so far hasn't tried climbing out of her crib.

  • @becausescience No. You are not crazy. We are getting bunk beds because our first two need to share a room. The youngest will be 21months. I am terrified...but it must be done.
  • @becausescience P will be 1.5 years when baby is born, and about 21 months when baby is moved from a bassinet in our room to P’s crib and P will move to a toddler bed. You’re not crazy, I promise.
  • @becausescience We switched both of our kiddos by 18 mos because they were climbers. They did well!
  • @becausescience we transitioned DD around 23 months or so, and she did really well. We probably could have done it sooner. DS is a totally different kid, so at 2 years old, he's still in his crib and probably will be through the fall. We'll transition him this winter to a twin mattress on a box spring on the floor. The only toddler bed we have is the crib (transitions), so we don't plan to buy a toddler bed specifically for the transition. Both he and DD do well with the bigger beds as long as they are closer to the ground at the beginning. GL and I hope it goes smoothly!

  • @becausescience I am most likely doing the same but I'm terrified I will never ever sleep. I'm actually leaning towards a twin sized bed but a floor bed.
@crossfitbabybump I have never worn them but have heard great things about tieks. I know they are pricey though.

I haven't seen this question asked before, but feel free to redirect me if it has been. Has anyone used or does anyone plan to use a night nurse for their newborn?
My Aunt is a postpartum doula and sleep expert.  She does more than just teach your baby a great sleeping schedule.  She helps the mom with recovering and feeding too.  I really wish she was closer to help me during recovery, because the services she offers sound glorious. It just sounds like she overall supports the mom and baby during recovery.

Um, I wish I lived close to your aunt... that sounds amazing. Best pitch for a night nurse/postpartum doula I've seen. If it were affordable for me, which in my urban area I don't think it is, I would definitely use one!

(edit to fix the crazy weird quote boxes. failed. )
  • Is anyone else being directed to take baby aspirin every day? I was told to today and know it's a preventative measure for preeclampsia but have low blood pressure and no swelling so why should I?

@kalawa We were JUST talking about bunk beds this weekend! My son will be 2.5 and a bunk bed would allow me to sleep with baby when necessary then leave him in bed when I can back into my room.

Question: I'm having this feeling that feels exactly like super hunger but isn't resolved by eating a solid meal. Does this even make sense?  What do you all think? Has anyone felt this? I'll also ask my midwife.

Edited bc I didn't even ask a question the first time.
  • @megpeg I was told by a MW to take a baby aspirin to help avoid high BP this pregnancy since I had it last time. My BP at that appt was 116/78.
  • @barrelocarol I remember with my daughter, once I FINALLY got over the nausea, I just constantly had this pit in my stomach. Like I was hungry, but it didn’t go away with eating. Does that sound like what you’re experiencing? I never asked my midwife, but it went away after a week or two. Right now I’m going through stuffing myself overly full and then thirty minutes later being STARVING again. No pit, just constant hunger. I remember really hating those couple of weeks though with my daughter.
  • @ShawnnaO YES! That's exactly what it sounds like! The dull ache sucks...
  • Well I totally forgot to get my flu shot after school today (offered for free at school).  Is this something that is typically covered by insurance if I get it at the Dr instead?  Or does anybody know how much it typically costs if insurance doesn't cover it? (I really don't want to call my insurance...)

My insurance covered it at CVS and most do by pharmacies. You can call the pharmacy and see if your insurance covers it.

  • @megpeg I’ve been taking it since I got pregnant and will continue to. I have a clotting disorder and usually they only treat me post partum with blood thinners for 6 weeks, but TW* due to recurrent pregnancy loss they wanted me to try this.

  • @becausescience I got mine last night at Walgreens and it was free. I think most insurance companies cover it, but if not my mom told me it was like $25-$30 from her recollection.
  • @becausescience almost all insurance companies cover flu shots! (because it’s in their financial interest to prevent transmission/hospitalization in their customer pool)
  • @becausescience adding to the "flu shots are free with most insurance plans these days" chorus, but also wanted to add that when I got mine, Walgreens gave me one specifically for pregnant women (I don't remember the exact difference, but maybe it didn't have a certain preservative in it?). As a non-medical person, I imagine the normal flu shot is totally fine for pregnant women, but as long as you're taking the effort to go into the pharmacy, you might as well ask!
  • Is there a way to check if someone has posted before on mobile? I’m never on desktop but I’m always curious if the drive-bys are repeat one-off posters or new.
  • Is anyone taking a pregnancy-specific probiotic? I recently bought one, but am hesitant to start it for no particular reason.
  • @orbmaker my prenatal has a probiotic in it - says it's bacillus coagulans.

  • @orbmaker, my doula recommended one to me that I'm taking. But now I can't remember the name. I want to say Natural Factors Cal D'ophilus. No idea if I spelled that right.

I have taken the same old regular probiotics before, during, and after all pregnancies.  They're so good for you!  And I thank them formnever needing the colace PP :)

  • So im at the doctor, Braxton hicks are driving me crazy. Unless I am laying down, my stomach hardens and tightens, and now having cramping, back pain and shortness of breath. I can't even walk to the kitchen for a glass of water without it happening. Anyone else experiencing them this severely?
  • @SoFlaMommie1128 no, in fact I have ALWAYS been told by my doctors that if they’re constant, and come along with back pain, to make sure I get to the doctor. If you were further along I’d say you’re in early labor. Please keep us updated on what your doctor says! Do you happen to know if you have an irritable uterus?
  • edited October 2017
Thanks @ShawnnaO I appreciate it! I had them before with DS, but it was around 32 weeks, definitely not 19. They will use the fetal contraction monitor to see what's going on and check to make sure the baby is okay. I definitely feel the baby moving, so that is comforting at least.

This is so strange - it just started out of the blue yesterday.

edit to add - I will ask about the irritable uterus! I've heard of people having that, but never been told I have it myself.
  • @SoFlaMommie1128 yeah it’s definitely normal to get them earlier with 2nd+ pregnancies but they shouldn’t be constant like you’re describing. I don’t know much about irritable uterus other than that my friend had it and she started getting almost constant Braxton hicks pretty early on. I hope you don’t have that and that you’re just dehydrated, but it will be good for you to know!
  • @SoFlaMommie1128 I had them ALL the time with DD, many being uncomfortable from about 28 weeks on, but I didn’t have a hard time walking or anything. Hope everything is ok, update when you can!

side note: I am occasionally noticing them already, they started at about 18 weeks this time.

No,you can only check that from your desktop. If you are referring to our most recent drive by she posted one time before asking how many kids does everyone have. I checked today and she hasn't logged in since posting her sob story 2 days ago.

  • @bettyvonsomethingstein thanks! I've taken them on and off before carrying a babe, but called my midwife this afternoon to be sure and she was like GO FOR IT!

@chasingroygbiv they started for me this time at about 14 weeks and I’ve been getting maybe five or six a day, but like you said, none that prevent me from being able to function. I’m amazed by how much earlier some things are happening with this pregnancy!

@muggle621 I definitely read that as son of a bitch story  :D thank you! I knew when I originally read her post something seemed familiar but obviously with her username it’s kind of hard to see if she’s posted in the past while being on mobile.
  • Is anyone else planning to formula feed right off the bat? Or have you done so in the past? One of the other BMBs has a formula feeding thread that I found very informative and I was wondering if something like that might be beneficial to anyone else here. I'm particularly concerned about not feeling supported in this decision post-partum at the hospital.

(I would start a thread myself but this is my first pregnancy so I don't have advice to offer. But if others are interested in the topic I can get something going.)

  • @afoul I definitely encourage you to start a thread for formula feeding! Even if someone isn’t necessarily planning to formula feed, it still may be the route they end up taking the thread being there could be really helpful.

As far as the hospital goes, your doctors should start asking you how you’re planning to feed when you’re in your third tri, so it will be in your file. And ultimately, fed is best and I’ve never ran into a doctor that didn’t support a mother wanting to feed her child in the way that best suits her family. If you’re worried, maybe bring it up with your doctor now so you can get a feel for what to expect when baby is born.
  • @megpeg my husband's cousin, who is also a L&D nurse, is currently pregnant with her third. They had her preventatively begin taking baby aspirin really early. By her description, the impression I have is that you don't need to show signs of a problem for there to already be a problem you can begin combatting early on in the pregnancy (and possibly prevent preterm labor). She had her first 2 really early, and so she's monitored especially closely.

@SoFlaMommie1128 I have contraction issues. I didn't have it with my first at all, but it started early in the third trimester with my second. This time around, I had BH at the end of the first tri, and I get them occasionally already. They haven't been horribly intense yet, but mine would even be regular, close together, intense, and last for hours with DS. I hope yours calm down! Sometimes a bladder infection or other related issue can trigger BH, too, so it's worth checking out! GL!!

  • @megpeg I was directed to start aspirin as soon as I started the second trimester due to pre eclampsia, my son having iugr and *TW miscarrying his twin early on. END TW*
By 18 weeks with my son I had gained all the recommendated weight and then some and was already having swelling in my hands. So far the weight gain has been exactly what it should be and absolutely no swelling. If you have history of pre e or a clotting disorder, then I would take it
