  • @cups4 I haven't read that book but i really want to!  Now I definitely have to.

My husband is British so we use names from the U.K. And that's how I fell in love with Rhys

  • @rowboat4
Lol Sven? Better than my son's suggestion of Sonic! oh children hahaha
  • I got a little carried away with this novel-length post - turned out to be a therapeutic exercise! I bolded the names in hopes that skimmers might find some inspiration even if we're having issues. Haha.

If you were to have any name your heart desired for your baby what would it be? And why won't you use it?

We're coming across two rather frustrating barriers...*feeling exasperated* ...Anyone else having these issues??:

    1) Because of where we live (Québec) and our culturally-blended family, the name needs to work in both English and French so the kid doesn't spend a lifetime correcting people (not to mention the sets of French-only and English-only grandparents!). So that rules out some favorites of mine like Lyla (which would come out "Leelah" - sooo not the same), Miles/Myles ("Meels") or Milo ("Meelo"), Micah ("Meekah").

    2) Hubs and I are both sensitive to name-association... like every 3 out of 4 name suggestions, one of us either already knows someone who has named their baby the same recently (Lily, Léo) or we know someone with the name who's a friend, but not close enough for it to be an "honor" so it'd just be kind of weird (Jack, Max, Sam, Simon) or one of us has a negative association (Félix was an annoying kid in third grade, Ethan was an ex-boyfriend, Liam sounds too much (in French) like Léanne who was an ex-girlfriend.) Sucks, because I really like Felix!!

Another one is that some French names that I find fun and unique from my American perspective are either too bland for the hubs: Étienne (too floofy), Jacques (too grandpa), Geneviève or Amélie (too common), Vivienne or Évelyne (too grandma). Or the opposite: names he likes that I find too common in English, like Joshua or Elizabeth.

    Ahhhh this is so hard!!

Now give the realistic choices you might actually end up with?

The only one so far that we've both agreed on is Camélia. Maybe Théo, but I'm not so sure about that one since I'm not as crazy about the English counterpart (sorry, but Theodore makes me think of "Alvin and the Chipmunks"). We both love Léo and Lily/Lilie and might decide to try overcoming the fact that those are the names of the kids of a recent boss with whom we're still kind of in touch! Haha. Others we haven't vetoed but aren't super jazzed about (yet): Ava, Maia, Finn/Fynn, Nora, Noah. Actually, I really love Nora and it would work in both languages, but hubs is lukewarm.

What style of names do you like?

Hubs is a little more open to esoteric or nature-based names than I am, (Aspen, Wren, Coral) whereas I want something unique, too, of course, but not too "out there" where they'd have to defend it all their life... something that nicely straddles that line between Original and Classic. Something you've heard somewhere but don't have 12 of in your kindergarten class. I also like the idea of using a family name, but when I look through our family trees, there aren't a lot of great ones that pop out! Mostly your standard oldies: George, Mary, Norma, Richard. We both have a grandfather's name we like the idea of, but of course come with their own Reasons Why Not: Élie, the hubs' grandfather, is a little too similar to what a close cousin on the same side of the family just named their kid, Eliot; my grandfather's name, Drew, could work for either gender, but the man actually hated the name and chose to go by Bill.

I honestly don't know what we're gonna do!! Haha. Good thing we have 7 more months...

There are a couple names I've liked but we won't use that you might like. Remy is French. It's one SO and I like a lot but just aren't in love with. Two nature names that I like are Hazel and Aster. Maybe you or your DH might like one of them.
  • @SLB5757 I wouldnt worry about lose connections. Your old boss isn't the same as your sister...

i have NO clue how these translate to French, but just based on your style... What about Iris, Ivy Luna, Silas, Cedar (nature names), or Oliver, Sawyer, Everett, Graham, Fiona, Lydia? Good luck!
  • @cups4 I LOVE that character!

  • Re: Bash I have heard it used as a nickname to Sebastian
nms but was Bash a nickname or his actual name?
  • @slb5327 I was thinking of you at the gym today. For a girl, what about Sabine or Simone?

No idea - was introduced to him in a classroom setting and as “just another parent” I didn’t ask.

https://www.behindthename.com/ is a pretty comprehensive search. It will tell you the origin of a name, meaning and it's history. However, it won't include names that have been recently made-up.
This is the source I use for all my names which was why I was questioning whether it was “real” or not. Risa comes up as a user submitted name.

Which kind of sucks cause I do kind of like it.
It could be a nn for another name. My name is Karissa but there is also Marissa, Carissa, etc. I don't go by a nn though. Never found one that seemed to fit.
  • @slb5327 I'm a little late seeing this but I am in the exact same situation as you!! I am English speaking but my H is francophone and his family is all French speaking only, so the name needs to work in both and it's super friggin hard. We had an easier time thinking of ideas for a girl and are thinking Juliet or Juliette. Boys seem way harder though. We had considered Theodore as well for similar reasons, but have similar concerns about how it sounds in English. We could try to convince everyone to call him "Tay-o" like in French but he will be correcting everyone for the rest of his life in our English speaking town. We also both really like the name Finn but it really doesn't seem to translate well. So hard!!

FWIW, one member of H's family recently named their son Damien, to have a name that works well in both English and French. Which it does, and I like the name (especially as I've grown to love the boy it's attached to) but it also makes everyone in English think of the antichrist, so there's that.

  • @rowboat4 my friend goes by Rissa but her name is Larissa.
  • Thanks @hollieileen. It’s off the table for us though.

    1. If you were to have any name your heart desired for your baby what would it be? And why won't you use it? I always, always, always wanted a son named Jack. Not Jackson, or anything like that. Just Jack. But my sisters A$$hole father-in-Law is named Jack. So that's out. I also really liked Nathan, but that is my husbands brothers name so nope.
    2. Now give the realistic choices you might actually end up with? we have decided that regardless of sex this baby will be named Memphis. We haven't decided fully on middle names yet but I like Memphis Jean for a girl (my step mom is named Janice but here siblings call her Jean so it's a sneaky way of tributing her) or Memphis Norman for a boy (my grandfathers name)
    3. What style of names do you like? we seem to have a real hankering for names that end in S. Other names on our like list are Ellis (for boy or girl), Tobias, Marcus, Silas, Jacobus (then I could have my jack
    4. If you're comfortable sharing your other children's names what are they? Do you have a sibset in mind? sons name is Titus Jackson (closest I will get to a son named jack). We are sticking with the "ends in S" theme.
  • We have this problem too. My husband is French and we live in the US (I am American). We picked Benjamin for our son, which actually wore well in both languages. We knew he was a boy and our short list was Benjamin, Louis, Henry and Rémy. I don’t know what we’re going to do this time, it’s hard! @slb5327

Why is this app so stupid sometimes???? This post messed up, sorry.
  • Great names everyone!!! I tried posting all mine but the app screwed it up and didn't post it all, and it's late so I'm giving up for the night!
Except, I'll leave this question here: my SIL and BIL named their girl Kennedy. My husband is dead set on naming a girl Makenna. Do you think the names are too similar??

    No.

  • @curleemama32 not close at all.
And I get it because I tried to veto DD's name because it was too close to our nephew's name. I was the only one who saw that and would get side eye from people when I asked.
  • @curleemama32 agree not close enough. I think if they were siblings it would be too much, but cousins is fine I think.
  • No, I don't think they're too similar.  One of my sisters got upset because my other sister named her daughter Maria and she thought it was too close to Mary.  Some people might think so, but a. they have different last names and b. don't even live in the same state.  I LOVE the name Josephine, and we won't use it because MH doesn't like it, but if he did, I would not let the fact that one of my nephews is named Joseph keep me from using it.

  • Thanks @suchaglencoco and @ivyvines6, the similar "kenn" parts had me side eyeing myself, lol. I think I'm just super self conscious and paranoid when I'm pregnant!
  • @curleemama32, ours have the same first 2 letters and they often refer to him as "Al" (not his letters, but as an example) and I thought we'd do the same.  We do not. We mainly use her full name or bizarre nicknames.  Almost 2 years in and there's been zero confusion.
  • I'm late to catching up, I was out yesterday.  My sister's ex-husband came from an Italian family where it was tradition to name the first born son after the grandfather, so they had a lot of cousins with the same name.  I think it would be confusing, but not necessarily strange.  My husband's grandfather had the same name as his sister's husband, so they also had two cousins with the same name.  Now that I think of it, MH has the same name as one of my nephews, so even though he doesn't want a child named after him, I wouldn't think twice about doing it if he did.

  • I have a first cousin with the same name as me. I thought it was sort of funny at the time (I was a teenager when she was born) but now I don't think anything of it. She does mostly go by a nickname though.
  • DH is pretty stuck on Amelia for a girl. I like it, too, but I wish it wasn’t so popular.

We were team green with our first, and that was a potential name. My husband really liked it, but we ended up swapping it out with Emilia since it was so popular in our area
