Nursery Themes!

Re: Nursery Themes!

The kids are both moving to new rooms so the baby will be close to us. The nursery will be a pale grey with a blue green undertone, white stripes on one wall and white trim. It will get more detail added when baby comes depending on boy or girl. Boy will get blue and green accents, girl will get coral an for yellow. White curtains either way.

So for DS’s nursery we did teal, red, grey and navy blue. There were planes and whales and stars... it was just a pretty fun, basic room that let us incorporate all the different things that people wanted him to have because of sentiment. I thought I had a finished picture but you get the idea.

For 2.0 I know I want to go basic... but I need a color scheme that’s a little different. I think when I find a quilt I love, I’ll know what I want.

For DS we did grey walls with mint, coral, and mustard decorations/pops of color. It has a very, very loose "sky" theme with you are my sunshine, clouds, hot air balloons incorporated. We purposely made it gender neutral to be able to use as a nursery for all of our kids so instead of planning a nursery, this time I'll be planning a big boy room for DS (he's one). For that room, I am leaning towards painting it mint with black and white bedding and decorations.
ETA... we can't start the big boy room until after Thanksgiving because we are having family stay with us and need two guest rooms! Not sure what we'll do now with only one guest room moving forward lol.

@becausescience I want you to design a space room for me. I'm jealous.

I/we (since DH said he doesn't care) haven't settled on a theme yet. I absolutely love Charley Harper and Land of Nod has an awesome selection of stuff with his art on it: https://www.landofnod.com/charley-harper-for-nod

I'm also trying to convince my brother to let me make a few prints of photos he took while on he and his wife were on their safari honeymoon in South Africa...the only problem is he said that's what he had in mind for a nursery when they have kids.  :D Basically my theme is animals at the moment, though maybe slightly more marine animals since DH and I both love the beach. We're planning on painting the whole house early next year, so I'll probably do just white or very light blue for the nursery walls.

@becausescience That blue is very pretty! I also second the idea for glow-n-the-dark stars!

@HappyMonkey817 I hear you there - my nursery still has plastic bags of clothes stuffed in the corner due to a  bug problem we had awhile back, but it's been so long that I really should finish washing everything and get it put away. I also have my miscellaneous wedding decor in the room that I need to take to my parents since the wedding is closer to their house.

I've at least started on my nursery. I got the pictured shelf with boxes, as well as the not pictured rock-n-play, swing, pack-n-play (also in the mint green/grey), armchair, and side table(I'm considering switching it out for something smaller because it's pretty big, and could be used as a play table when the baby is older.) My MIL and her family want to buy us a crib at Christmas so I'm trying to finish cleaning up before then.

I'm just constantly searching for little owl decorations and anything/everything I can get my hands on that is mint green/grey.

We didn't think we'd have a third so when the second was a girl our nursery was painted purple with lace drapes and heart pictures. It has antique furniture so we went with that theme. We've done so much remodels this year that DH doesn't know if he has it in him to even repaint, so DS might get himself a very classic and feminine nursery until further notice  :p

@ksmwalters  I am loosely basing our nursery around the charley harper Land of Nod stuff! trying not to go crazy with things like $100 raccoon shelves!

@mdfarmchick Omg I love your decorations!!!! My husband and I are both in aviation, so ours will undoubtably have airplane stuff in it whether it's a boy or a girl  <3

I love this quilt and will paint two walls as close as the sea foam color of it as I can, with the other2 walls white. We are doing a fair amount of black and white, and lots of animals. I already bought a crib and dresser with a changing table top thing, and some fitted sheets that I love.

    @leilaquinn  Those sheets!!!!

OH MY GOSH, you guys. This isn't technically nursery related, but all of you mentioning Land of Nod... I apparently have never thought to look there this pregnancy. We're moving DS (2.5) to a big boy bed and a new room this winter... and their Paul Frank collection for boys! I'm in love. <3  I feel like I could make a super cool room for him to get him excited. His nursery is nautical - pirate ship wheels and anchors, plus a big wooden pirate chest for his toys so I could easily transition. So THANK YOU for bringing it up and reminding me. :)

    Following for cute nurseries lol
we did Lion King with our son's nursery, his room has since morphed into everything cars, tractors, trucks, puppies and baby dolls. There is no more theme, just a random slew of his favorite things. We downsized to add to savings, so new kid doesn't even get a room until we buy next year haha

@leilaquinn Oh man I am in love with that sloth! I may have to get one... but yeah Land of the Nod is dangerous. I really like the look of their furniture and storage ideas, but I think we've decided to go Ikea for most of that stuff so we can save money for other things.

We don't know the sexes yet, but we decided either way we are going the woodland animals route. We like how it's non gender specific (and that it would work if we have one of each sex in the same room). And there are so many prints and stuff that are out there for it on Amazon, etc. that it seems like it won't be a hugely annoying to manage. We can't paint or anything (rental) so being able to make it work with prints and wooden furniture seems like the easiest way to make it look put together without having to deal with our landlord (or actually having to paint lol).

My coworker did a woodland theme and she put up a huge decal behind the crib of a tree. Then, hung little pictures at the ends of the branches and put the baby's name in the center. It's super neat.

@vflux33 those are ridiculously adorable! My word of caution in regards to decals is that several friends of ours had to sand the drywall and patch/paint after using the decals. It sounds like an awful lot of hassle to me so I won’t put them up.
  • Options
@mdfarmchick Thank's for the heads up. I'd be especially worried about that because we're renting. Also I heard mixed things about the quality of the decals--that some are cheap and fall off easily (maybe that depends also on the type of paint? IDK). That's part of the attraction of the wood signs. Also we have some animal related pictures that we may be able to sneak in even though they weren't initially meant for kids. I don't want the nursery to look temporary, but we're hoping to buy a house in a year or 2 so doing anything requiring lots of effort feels meh for something so short term. If it's just prints and signs we can reuse all that stuff after moving, which is nice.

We had a ton of Lion King decals on DS walls for almost 2 years and no issues with the paint peeling or damaged underneath. I’d do it again
  • Options
@vflux33 we aren't planning to paint either. I was thinking prints and signs that coordinate with blanket, curtains and an area rug would be plenty. We don't have any rug/carpet in our house lol, but for some reason I feel like one is necessary for the nursery. Maybe it's early nesting. ;)

anyone have advice on chemical-free rugs? I saw the flame-retardant discussion on car seats and I know carpeting is  major source of that ick. Same for rugs, I assume?

@fatstagnation I'm currently researching this and haven't made definite conclusions/choices yet, but in the meantime I've found this site really helpful: https://thebestorganiclifestyle.com/non-toxic-area-rugs-for-your-home

@leilaquinn omg it’s all so cute!! The Land Of Nod is like my danger zone...it’s so tempting. My mom & stepmom are already asking about nursery themes though so they might be getting some of the stuff. (Also those sheets you posted are adorable!!) I made the mistake of googling Charley Harper posters/prints for decor options and WOW authorized stuff is EXPENSIVE. I might just buy another one of his art books and frame pages from that. I love the Florida Keys quilt and these prints:

We we were also walking around a local festival this weekend and one booth had these amazing stuff sea creatures - like whales and octopi and starfish. I mentioned how cute they were and my brother and SIL said they’d considered buying one but didn’t know what our theme was so they didn’t want to before they spoke to us. I said it would be perfect and my brother snatched the shop’s card from me as we were walking away.  :D I wish I could remember their name so I could post a pic!

@ksmwalters that Florida keys quilt is still torturing me! I have to add that I have never given a shit about decorating of any kind in my almost 35 years of life until I got pregnant. I would have thought that a biological interest in crib skirts would be nonsense, but it really is a thing.
  • Options
leilaquinn  LOL, "a biological interest in crib skirts."

It is weird, isn't it? I'm an artistic person, so my decorating consisted of the art in each room belongs together and is nicely displayed. But otherwise our house came with wood floors, white walls, and the original antique wood trim. Done. We generally just pick the black version of whatever Ikea furniture we need. (I do dream of buying better furniture one day...) But now suddenly I'm like "baby's room must have a color scheme and cute theme. A rug and curtains and blanket that match." Ah, who am I?!

@bb3vj3n I love that wall paper with gray walls! So pretty.

We haven't done much... I have bedding picked out from target to start our pink and mint wildflower/woodlands theme but that's about it.  Stock pictures from targets website:

The only decisions we’ve made are that we want white cribs
We want to decorate around these (not all, prob 4 or so)

We are moving in a few weeks and idk what colour we are going to paint yet!!! Thinking a pale yellow? It works for both the boy and girl nicely.

ETA- now I’m debating using all of the prints because I love them all.
